Catalonia Bavaro Beach Golf & Casino Resort

Catalonia Bavaro is a solid resort, clean and well maintained. The furnishings and interior of the suites are a little outdated. However, many travelers find this a menial issue that did not interfere with their stay. The beach has a lot of seaweed but they do their best to keep it clean. The food is good with lots of selection.
This resort lost our reservations - when we and another couple arrived the front staff was less than sympathetic and would do nothing to try to confirm. I had to call Southwest Vacations myself to have the reservation re-sent. After 1 1/2 hours in the lobby with no assistance from the front desk staff (especially the manager), they reluctantly checked us and our friends in. Rooms were fair, housekeeping left our door open one day. Friends room had air conditioning issues, which was reported day one, but not fixed until day six of seven (after the front desk staff lied and said that they had fixed it). Our saving grace was restaurant and bar staff, who were very friendly, courteous and obviously took the customer service training that the front desk staff slept through. If not for the front desk staff, service would have been rated higher.
Hotel Catalonia this hotel is no way a 5 star hotel I spent most of my holiday with an upset stomach as did my friends I went with. After seeing some of the dirty habits of fellow holidaymakers staying at the hotel. Who appears to think it was ok to dip fingers in food lick them and try another topping for the ice cream or get a spoon trying the different flavours. This was seen on several occasions with the food on display. The staff were very helpful. The food halls had plent of variety of foods . But most days drinks i.e coffee and tea was not served at the table unless you found someone to do so. Especially the restaurant by the beach. The Italian restaurant was ok if you liked cold soup owing to have to wait for spoons in fact it was chaos no organisation. The staff at the bar on the beach were really good and friendly especially Juan. The rooms were clean but watch out when it rains the roof leaks and you have to move the bed to avoid getting wet in the night our bathroom ceiling also leaked. I don’t think I would go back to the Dominican Republic been there got the tea shirt .
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Catalonia for a week (last week, February) and had a fantastic time! The property was gorgeous, clean, and well kept. Despite it being right before the busy season, the grounds/beaches/pools/restaurants never felt crowded. A few highlights/things to note:StaffOverall the staff was fantastic! Especially our new friend Juan at the beach bar! It's clear that he takes personal pride in making sure his guests feel welcome and have a great time! We didn't have any communication issues with anyone on staff as far as understanding/speaking English. FoodThe food was great! Especially the Italian and Hibachi restaurants. Not having to make reservations was nice and we never had to wait more than 30 mins. The omelet station at the breakfast buffet was a great way to start the day. Plenty of fresh fruit available as well. The little coffee shop was also great!Entertainment/Activities There was plenty to do between beach volleyball, aerobics, beach yoga, and games. The high energy staff made sure everyone was having a great time! One thing I didn't notice until the end of our stay - there is a list of activities posted at the bottom floor of your villa. Make sure to check it so you don't miss anything! We also had a great time kayaking and snorkeling. You are able to see plenty of fish right off the beach! There was also a sandbar that went pretty far out that allowed us to literally walk about half a mile into the ocean in waist deep water. We had a great time watching all the kite-surfers from the ocean!TippingWe brought about $100 for tipping for a week. One thing to note - break up your change before you get there!! There are not many opportunities to break large bills and even the currency exchange booth wasn't able to break up many bills. Cleaning ServicesThe only issue we had during our stay was having our rooms restocked. "Consistently inconsistent" as someone said, despite tipping. On our last night, our room's shampoo/conditioner hadn't been restocked for the past 2 days. We called and visited the front desk several times and got "someone is coming" for about 2 hours. This caused us to get a late start on our last night and was frustrating. Couples vs Family accommodations There were plenty of couples staying on the resort but after venturing over to the Catalonia Royal next door, I would probably book there in the future. The Royal's accommodations and activities seemed to be more geared towards couples. We still had a nearly perfect vacation at the Catalonia Bavaro, just something I would note before re-booking. WeatherLike others noted, don't be worried if your forecast calls for rain! Our last day called for rain all day and it ended up being one of the most gorgeous days of the week!Airport NotesPeople will come up and try to grab your bags and direct you. Even if they're wearing a hat/shirt from your airline they are likely just looking to carry your bags and ask for a tip. Also before you arrive at the taxi section of the airport, note your transportation company and go straight to their desk. (Make sure you know the name of the company before you get off the plane!) Other drivers will try to take your information out of your hands and direct you towards their services. Overall I would absolutely recommend this resort! Special thanks for Juan for making sure we had a great time and some of the best Rum y Colas & Daiquiris I've ever had!!
Just returned from 2 weeks at Catalonia Feb 6,2018. This was our 3rd visit. We were a group of 10 & were catered to every day.It was a Golf vacation, course was in fairly good condition, had a lot of rain the first week, so it got a little wet & muddy, but overall was good. Dried up after a couple of days.Rooms - Outdated need work. Our roof was leaking & after a few calls someone came to repair... but it did not work. We then changed rooms. The staff could not do enough for us. They were always there to see if we needed anything.Special thanks to Sarah (Main Bar) Carolina ( Buffet Rest.,) Luis Rameriz (Italian Rest) Anthony (F&B) always setting up dinner reservations since we were 10, Luis (Golf Shuttle) Ruben (SteakHouse & Yuka) Dennyson (Activities) Alexandria (Golf Shop) The Golf Back Shop guys were very good (Ernesto, Juan, Luis)Beach- Lots of Umbrellas & Chairs, the beach is not what it used to be, lots of seaweed, hard to keep up with the cleaning, but they were always at it.Food - We ate mostly at the a la carte restaurants, food was good. The buffet usually had a good selection. Never had any complaints.Housekeep was very good, room always clean & fridge well stocked. One BIG issue was SMOKING...in the main lobby bar. People should be going outside to light up. It is not good for anyone.Times are changing. We will probably be back next year..
Me and my fiancee visited this resort in the end of January 2018 for two weeks. We travelled with TUI and it was a package deal. We really enjoyed the resort and the grounds were beautiful, we didn't have a privilege room but the room was Nice, there were some minor damages on the walls and roofs. The WIFI was really inconsistent in the room, 80% of the time we didn't have access to internet while we were in our room. Outside and in the lobby/pool area we had great reception on our phones and good WIFI. Food were good, especially the breakfast at the buffet at the lobby, don't miss out the small coffee shop in the shoppingarea, nice service and calm and nice. When it comes to value for our money we think we get the exact value that we paid. The services were alright, but if you tip the staff you get better service. I'm used to get good service and then I tip them, here it felt like u had to tip to get good service. But maybe that's a cultural difference....Entertainment team tried there best to entertain us but the quality of some activities were very low. But overall it was a pleasant experience and we are very happy with our stay.
