Overall a pleasant vacation which terminated with an evacuation due to hurricane Irma approaching the island. The two areas that require much improvement are; food services and beach. The majority of the buffet and restaurant served us cold to lukewarm food that had been prepared well in advance. the Italian and the Asian restaurants were the only establishments that provided food that was prepared with attention and served warm and tasty and deserved to be recognized. The beaches was covered daily with seaweed and the water a brownish color due to te attack from the continuous from seaweeds
We returned to the Catalonia Royal to celebrate our youngest daughters 21st birthday and have a family holiday. They did not disappoint at all. On arrival there was a birthday banner across our daughters bedroom door, then champagne and fruit in the room. In our room we were welcomed back with Dominican rum and fruit. A lovely touch and nice surprise. The rooms were spacious and well presented. Small touches like fresh flowers and towels folded into various creations. The food again was excellent, all the restaurants provided sumptuous food and first class service. The bars provided a wide variety of drinks and a great cocktail menu. The staff are professional, attentive and friendly. Nothing was too much and they would remember your favourite foods, drinks and replace them without asking. The hotel is set on the beach with two pools and lovely grounds. It really is a place of idyllic bliss.
We have just returned from Catalonia Royal where we spent 2 weeks for our 1st Wedding Anniversary. I was shocked to read all the bad reviews...The hotel and grounds are beautiful and our room was also gorgeous. Clean, spacious and modern with a minibar, huge in-room bath and balcony area. The restaurants are great, Cata Tapa was our favourite with Thalassa and Sea Blue closely behind. The pizza restaurants on both sides are amazing! We were addicted to them! The restaurants on the family side were also available to us. We found the Buffet and Carribean were quite disappointing but everything else was really nice. There are a couple of restaurants that require men to wear long trousers. The evening entertainment was ok...it was quite relaxed over the adult side and more lively on the family side. I think entertainment should be on a little later as everything seemed to be finished or finishing at around 10pm which left the atmosphere quite flat. There is a disco/club on the family side...ok if youv'e had a few and want a laugh! Open till about 2am but not very lively. The grounds are really pretty and specious and there is a lot of wildlife which was lovely to see. There are lots of seated chill out relaxing areas dotted around where you can just sit and switch off! The beach was ok. Unfortuantely we were there whilst hurricane Irma made an appearance so the seaweed was probably at its worst. However the staff were working tirelessly to clear it. This involved a jcb digger so it wasnt very relaxing. Luckily we loved the infinity pool so spent most of our time around the pool. Sunbeds are not an issue here...people dont seem to get up early and save the beds, so you can go for breakfast, wander to the pool or beach and there are always plenty of loungers and bali beds. There is a little shopping mall where you can pick up snacks, toiletries, gifts, clothes, medicines etc. You have a room tab so anything you buy goes on this and you pay at the end of the holiday when you check out. It is however rather overpriced. I would recommend taking lots of $1 notes for tips. There is no where to get bigger notes changed and the cashpoints only give out dominican pesos. We took $100 for tips and found that it was plenty. I would like to mention a few members of staff that stood out to us whilst on our holiday and really made a difference to our stay :) German - We had outstanding service from German in Thalassa Restaurant both in the morning for breakfast and at lunchtimes. He was always so welcoming and friendly and made a real effort to make us happy and comfortable at mealtimes. He had a very energetic and vibrant persona which made him shine! Joel - We had outstanding service from Joel in Thalassa Restaurant both in the mornings for breakfast and in the evenings. He was a very happy character and he was genuine and friendly. He made us welcome at every mealtime. He was generally a very bubbly member of staff. Santa - We received awesome service from Santa at the Infinity Pool every single day! She works very hard ensuring that everyone is tended to and has drinks and will happily continue to bring cocktails to the bali beds or to you in the pool. Nothing is too much for this woman! She is another very bubbly and friendly member of staff who makes the effort to talk and make you feel welcome and relaxed. Jennifer - Guest services - Jennifer was extremely helpful and informative regarding a shopping trip we wanted to go on. We had so many questions and nothing fazed her! She made loads of calls to sort something for us. She even tried to arrange for me to go to the local Zara! I hope this was her name (Very pretty Spanish looking lady with long dark hair and speaks excellent English) All of the staff were amazing but these particular ones stood out to us and are a real credit to the Hotel! They really do add a personal touch to the holiday and I hope that they get the thanks and rewards that they derserve! On a not so happy note, we received extremely bad service from a bar tender called Edwar in the main bar on the family side. We were told about a cocktail called a Samisosa at the Sea Blue Restaurant that my Husband loved! When we went to this particular bar Edwar served us and initially seemed to be shouting at me telling me to wait as he was serving someone else. When we asked for the drink he initially pulled a face, laughed, and then proceeded to laugh and gesture at my husband in Spanish with another couple sat next to us at the bar and made my Husband feel very embarrassed and victimised. He then made our drinks away from where we were stood and continued to laugh and joke with the couple. He slammed our drinks down on the counter so hard that a lot of my cocktail flew out the top of the glass all over the bar. The couple and Edwar continued to watch my husband drink his drink whilst laughing everytime he had a sip. This made us feel threatened and uncomfortable so we left and never returned. We were shocked and confused by the service we had received as it was so good everywhere else. The staff in the lobby who try to sell you the timeshares , or 'platforms' as they call it are quite aggressive and persistant. After we checked in we got called over and made to sit for 10 mins after arriving from a 8 hour plane journey. We just thought it was part of check in. We were able to tell this particular member of staff the following day that we were not interested and it was then forgotten. However we were still harrassed by other members of staff for the same thing even though we told them we had already been told about it and that we were not interested. This unfortunately is a major let down for the hotel experience. Overall we had a fantastic time here and would most certainly recommend this hotel to friends and familyThanks for a wonderful stay!
This will be our 6th return on Monday 18th September.. The place, the staff, the restaurants, the ambiance are second to none. Last time, Reuben, one of the managers, upgraded our room and made our experience soooo much better. He also saved me from breaking my leg when he caught me when I slipped in reception! (We would love that room again please) .We are so looking forward to seeing the staff who have become our friends. All the staff are so friendly and amenable but there are those that we see regularly and they never fail to go out of their way to make sure we are really well looked after. There are the bar staff (who we see far too much of) Andy, DiLainy, Miladis, Yocaira and then Alba, Zuleika and those I have never managed to read the names of.. The lovely lady who used to welcome us into the restaurant and remembered our room number every day and always called Bob, Senor Robert. The people in the pool bar, Carlos, Carlito and the girls that were/are happy to serve us all day long? We have been to other prestigious hotels in the Dominican Republic but the service in the Catalonia is impeccable. The rooms are clean and well serviced and the maids were always happy to leave us whatever we asked for ( extra coffe, creamer .... and Oreos ). The entertainment at night time is amazing. The classic entertainment round the pool, the classy entertainment in the piano bar or the more robust offerings at the sister hotel, 1minute down the path will have everybody happy. My personal favourites are the Michael Jackson night and the Circus night. Bob is a lover of karaoke ....... What can I say? There are lots of things going on around the pool in the mornings .... aqua-aerobics, underwater spinning, exercises and more fun activities in the afternoons and bingo! There is a lovely gym, spa and mini golf course. There are various restaurants apart from the main one. Steak restaurant, Italian, Dominican, Tapas, casual and those that I can't remember. There are beach parties and barbecues and on top of all this, beautiful beaches, surroundings and amazing people. We discovered this place 3 years ago and this is our 6th time back. Work it out for yourself. If you holiday here you can not fail to have a fantastic time. Looking forward to seeing everybody again on Monday x.
We went here for our honeymoon and were disappointed. Not only did the hotel put us right in the middle of construction but nearly ALL the staff, except for one or two, were very grumpy the whole time
