Our Opinion

The Excellence Punta Cana is a good resort for couples looking to relax and get away in Punta Cana. Great rooms and accommodations. The rooms are cleaned and stocked daily. It can be guaranteed that goodies (chocolate, soft drinks and beer) will always be stocked in the mini-bar. The resort also makes good use of their 24-hour room service, which is always prompt. Pleasant and helpful staff, especially those near the pools, bars and beaches. Good layout of the resort. There are plenty of pools within reach, so you'll never find a shortage of loungers anywhere. The beach is a good place to lounge as well. However, for those wanting to wade along the shores, be advised that the resort often discourages this specifically when waves and currents are strong. There are endless options for both buffet and a la carte restaurants. Make sure to check out the Grill and Spice a la carte restaurants!

Excellent as always

We came to Excellence Punta Cana for the fifth time. This was the first time we’ve been back since they did the renovations. Very pleased with the changes. The rooms are modernized and continue to be very nice. The restaurants were rearranged a bit and some changes, but continue to be excellent. The service, one of the key features of this place, continues to be very friendly and accommodating. I must give a special shout out to Jose Antonio. He has been there for as long as we’ve been going (over 6 years). He mans the omelet station at breakfast. Rarely have I seen someone who seems to enjoy his job as much as Jose does. He not only accommodates any request you have, he does so with the most upbeat and positive attitude. He remembers me from one time to the next and remembers what my usual order is. He always has a cheerful demeanor and makes starting the day with him at Excellence a delight. He is one of the reasons I love coming back here year after year. There are so many others who also make the vacation special, from waiters, to bar tenders, to front desk personnel, but Jose stands out for me.

Disappointed

Excellence by name but excellent it is not ! Sadly Very disappointed with our stay.we go on 5/6 holidays a year a fraction of the price we paid for here and have never felt the need to complain as we did here ! This hotel has numerous issues that need to be addressed immediately if they want people to return. We had an upgrade to excellent club and expected all the benefits that went with this , alas it was an absolute farce, upon arrival no express check in , we were took to the wrong side of the building , not excellence club side, no champagne, flowers, fruit,beach bag , no bvgaria toiletries as promised. We were too tired to complain so waited till morning to address these issues, basically we complained and told to wait till 3 in the afternoon and they would move us, all a little stressful ... Got key at 3 to new room, got in lift with another couple who were also having the same problems as us, omg.... the lift broke down with us in it, the humidity and heat in there was horrendous , I started panicking and crying , rang the alarm for a good 10 /15minutes with no response , my partner managed to force the 1st set of doors open which let a little air in then forced the main door open , , we managed to climb down to find a room maid just laughing at us, she had obviously ignored the alarm ,we asked why she had not responded but just smiled, we could have been stuck there hours with no help , it was terrifying, and I will never go in a lift again. We went to notify concierge who did not even apologise but agreed to give us a ground floor room as I refused to use the lift again. 3rooms within 2days ..not my idea of a relaxing holiday, unacceptable ! What a stressful 2 days not my idea of an expensive luxury holiday I expected , to be fair we were offered a free massage the next day for our trouble and accepted , To be quite honest we could have complained about the food ,service etc every day but chose to make the most of a bad situation without stressing out , The food and service at the grill was appalling, after 1 1/2 hours of waiting for food it was cold so we walked out , found this an issue in nearly every restraunt , food undercooked or nearly raw with blood streaming out , ended up using room service meals a lot , queing at meal times not good , once again we were told that they were having lots of complaints on this and they were in talks with the chefs because of complaints , in the bars ....no jack Daniels, ran out , no baileys, ran out ,,, not good enough for 5star hotel !,, no beach towels 1 morning , they said they weren't ready till lunch time ,,, again unacceptable , This hotel really need to address these issues As we were not the only ones who were complaining ,,, hate complaining and don't expect to have to complain. . Disappointing time in a beautiful hotel with lovely staff what a shame

Returning Home

My husband and I arrived at Excellence Punta Cana December 29 to January 12, 2018 for our fourth two week stay (sixth visit to an Excellence Resort including two trips to Excellence El Carmen January and April of 2017) and it could not have been at a better time as most of Canada, Toronto in particular, was in the midst of a desolate, dreary, deep winter freeze. Prior to Excellent Punta Cana’s renovations, we stayed in Building 14 Excellence Club Ocean View Swim Up Suites 14004, 14005 or 14006, thanks to Roberto Puello, the former Guest Service Manager, and then we followed him to EEC for two wonderful holidays last year. After learning about plans to renovate EPC, we decided to return. According to Yeifrid, EPC’s current Guest Services Manager, it was apparently determined while the renovations were in progress, that the Excellence Club Suites would be relocated to Buildings 1 – 5 by the Cascade Pool. Upon arrival to the main lobby and after relishing a wet cloth and glass of champagne, we were whisked off, along with another couple, to the new Excellence Club Lounge located in Building 1. It was small and lacked any character or ambiance associated with its former location. We were offered drinks from its tiny drab bar and eventually checked in as a group, along with three other couples, rather than one couple at a time. The lack of individualized attention while checking in was definitely a surprise and a change from the usual protocol. After receiving the keys, we walked ourselves to Swim Up Suite 4004 which had the dankest mildew odour we have ever encountered in all travels south. We immediately realized that because of the suite’s corner location, it would receive no sun at all and this was going to be problem. Fortunately within days though, we were moved to Building 1 Excellence Club Swim Up Suite 1004, less damp and milder mildew smell, which did receive full sun with thanks to Front Desk Reception’s Alexander Pallany and Mathius, and Bell Man, Victor. We could not have been more appreciative or happier. Daily Mini Bar restocking and Housekeeping were “top notch”, gracias. The suite’s deck, with direct access to the upper pool, was spacious, and outfitted with a table, two wicker chairs, and comfortable sunbed. Floaties were available, but in limited number… which is why we always bring our own… as some guests have yet to learn how to “share”. There is not much of a towel game going on due to the abundance of sunbeds, loungers, taller palapas (previous ones were so low, guests had to duck down deeply to get under them), and private sunbeds. Drink service by the pools and beach was phenomenal thanks to Sonia (who should be married by the time this review is posted), Andreas, and Robert.There are twelve Excellence Club Swim Up Suites situated by the Cascade Pool in Buildings 1, 2, and 4. During January, Buildings 1 and 2 receive sun, while Building 4 does not. Building 5 Excellence Club Master Suites also do not receive much sun, but there are now many more new, comfortable cushioned sunbeds with large umbrellas facing the sun by the Cascade Pool that can be used to remedy the shade situation for guests staying in Building 4 Swim Ups and Building 5 Master Suites. Of interest, the Cascade Pool and new small Ocean Front Excellence Club Pool have specifically been reserved for Excellence Club guests. As well, the Magna Restaurant and Lounge have also been restricted to Excellence Club guests’ use, as only their suite keys can open the entrance.As other reviewers have already mentioned, the extensive renovations and upgrades have significantly added to an already gorgeous, colonial style resort! After cutting back bushes, trees, and landscaping, the ocean is now in full view from all vantage points for ocean facing suites, pools, and restaurants. A boardwalk and larger Las Olas Restaurant (beach) similar to EPC, have also been built between the pools and beach, and stretch the length of the resort. EEC’s Las Olas had a real vibe going on whereas EPC’s has yet to develop.Thankfully, the open air Lobby, Martini Bar, and Stars Bar were unchanged and have retained their original charm other than adding new furniture and more ceiling fans. Buildings 1 to 12 Suites have been finished and modernized (we used the “suite’s misplaced standalone bath tub” as a towel rack for drying our bathing suits!) whereas Building 14 Suites are still closed off for renovation. Their expected completion date is currently scheduled for February or early March.The beach is breathtaking for tanning, sitting under a palapa, reading or walking, but swimming can be tricky because of the powerful riptide (where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet). Since EPC is essentially the last resort located on this particular stretch of beach, its ocean front is isolated and stunning. The closest hotel is at least a 20 minute walk. There is a lifeguard on duty and the red flag was usually waving. Several guests brought “Boogie Boards” and were having a blast bobbing back and forth in some enormous ocean swells. The best swimming is safely enjoyed at the far right of the hotel and beyond where the water is less rough. The staff, like before, remain Excellent Punta Cana’s hugest asset, especially those who we have come to know over the years. One of our favourites is Altagracia who works at the Martini Bar during the day. We have always had a soft spot for Altagracia. She is exceptionally professional, attentive, overly kind, and we love her sense of humour. A day without seeing Altagracia, is like a day without sunshine… we will be thinking of her March 6 and sending our hugs.The Lobster House Restaurant breakfast staff is wonderful and truly treated us like royalty. We have eaten there every morning at our “usual table” for the past three EPC visits because of the staff and their thoughtful, attentive, genuine, friendly service, tasty food, and the restaurant’s gorgeous ocean view location. We are especially thankful to Franchielly, Kenia, Jhonny, Emelyn, and Luis Manuel, but we are most grateful for Roberto, Olga, Jose Louis, and Amparo who have taken care of us since our very first holiday at EPC. Amparo usually took our order and quickly had it memorized! He also prepared a special table for our dinner one evening at the Lobster House which we loved! The meal was incredibly delicious and beautifully prepared. Mucho, mucho gracias, Amparo, for your thoroughly impeccable service! My husband and I continued to enjoy the majority of our breakfasts at the Lobster House, but we definitely visited the Magna Restaurant on several occasions and savoured its aromatic French pressed coffee as well as its specialty food offerings. Each restaurant has its own unique appeal with professional staff and both provide glorious ocean views and offer lovely sit down menus. We are grateful for the personal service provided by the marvellous Magna staff from Lillian, Yoel, Eliezer, Oscar, Sterling, and last, but far from least, the ever “speedy”, amazingly attentive, professional, and humorous, Adan, who we have known, appreciated, and enjoyed for years! He is truly one of a kind! Many thanks, Adan! Special thanks also to Miguel from the Magna Lounge Bar, who made great rimless Margaritas.Several nights we stopped by the Sports Bar for a light, more casual meal and to watch some sports. We met up with server, Ravlin, who we originally knew from the Lobster House and who had been proudly promoted to work at the newly constructed Sports Bar. He really enjoyed his job and provided great service. Many sports fans were exceptionally happy the Sports Bar opened earlier than usual on New Year’s Day for them to take in all football games being played.My husband and I dined at most restaurants and the meals were outstanding, but our most favourite of them all, was the Spice and its extraordinary manager, who we have also known for years, Jose! He, personally took our order, suggested adding a shrimp dish which we would have never chosen, refilled our wine glasses, and delivered each course himself! Talk about going above and beyond usual service… for which we could never be more thankful or impressed! Jose is the only restaurant manager to ever do this for us and if that was not enough, the sushi dishes were exquisite, the food superior in taste, consistently served hot, perfectly timed, and spectacularly plated! Jose is to be highly congratulated and lauded for his commitment to remarkable food preparation, presentation, and customer service! Thank you ever so much, Jose! If possible, could we please have the recipe for any of the Spice’s dishes or maybe even for just the “Tom Kha Gai” soup, “wishful thinking”?In closing, my husband and I had another wonderful, relaxing holiday at Excellence Punta Cana, so much so, we have already booked a return trip April 13 – 27, 2018 and we will contact Alexander Pallany, as he recommended, a month prior to our arrival. Beatiful property but quirky resort

The property itself is lovely and pretty well maintained. Ocean view club Excellence room was nice but serious problem with A/C. Others had the same issue. Of the 6 nights we were there, elevator didn't work 1/2 the time. Staff very friendly. Ocean very rough (pe6hraps time of year) so no water sports equipment let out. Most disappointing was the food. Not bad, but just adequate and should have been much better for the property and the price. Avoid the Grill with the thinnest NY strip you have ever seen -1/4 inch thick, no exaggeration. Overall we had a good time but will not return

Excellence Punta Cana

My wife and I, along with two other couples, vacation at an all inclusive resort every January for the past 5 years. We selected the Excellence this year as it was our 30th anniversary and wanted something a little nicer than what we usually stay at. When all was said and done all 3 couples agreed that for the additional money the Excellence did not offer us anything the other resorts we've stayed at did for less money. So if I'm being honest it was nice but we all expected nicer. Staff is friendly and willing to help. Food was good but again on the disappointing side. Our first night we ate at the steak house. After being seated, a waiter (Miguel) took our order. We never saw him again! One hour after being seated and ordering we had no drinks, appetizers, salad, NOTHING. We eventually had to grab another waiter and explain what had happened to us and a couple sitting next to us. No excuse for this to happen. The grounds are beautiful and the beach large however water was rough the whole week. You could wade only as the waves were constant and the undertow strong. So if your looking for a nice place to vacation and have never been to an all inclusive the Excellence is a nice place to go but from my past experiences it was not worth the addition cost.
