The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Two adults and one child stayed for one week, August 5th to 12th.RECEPTION - Quick/easy, tip if you want a specific room. We were originally assigned to a room on the 1st floor but asked for and received a room on the third floor with a view of the pool. Good.ROOMS - Rooms run along two parallel buildings running the length of the property separated by the pool area. Building 98 is on the left, 99 is on the right, if you're facing from the lobby. There are no lifts/elevators. Hallways echo all sound so the consideration of your neighbours will determine your ability to sleep.There is an option to ask for pillows with different firmness through the butler service. We asked for firm but received soft. Beds are not that comfortable. Minor issue but not typical to 5 star resorts. There is also a sofa in the room that turns into a bed.No pool towels or stocked mini bar when we arrived. A call down to the concierge quickly rectified this within minutes. Good service from that area.CLEANING/MAID SERVICE - Superficial effort at best. Floors were not mopped once during our stay. Bathrooms not cleaned thoroughly (sink, tub, and shower still dirty after a day's use). Sheets weren't changed when asked. Amenities (shampoos/bath gel) not replenished. Bad. Extra towels were available when maids came for turn down service. Beds were made/rooms arranged daily. Cleaning lady came either in the late morning or mid-afternoon. Stocking of mini bar after initial encounter was good. A few dollars tip ensured we always had adequate amounts of water, chocolate milk, juice, and of course potato chips. Good.AIR CONDITIONING - Activated fully when there is movement detected in the room, otherwise set at around 24 celsius. Asked the concierge to reset to a lower temperature, around 22 celsius, which was done promptly. Anytime guest services/concierge was engaged, matters were addressed quickly. Good.POOLS - One main pool, separated into two main sections by the castle bar. Pool deck is slippery and retains heat. If you're hot footing it and hit a water spot, you'll go flying, be aware. Management should really replace the surface to material that is heat resistant with a non-slip surface. Chlorine is not used in these pools. With the number of young children and babies, there's going to be accidents. The kids splash park was closed on 4 separate occasions during our stay for 'cleaning'. There were a number of ear infections and upset tummies as well. Towels are tattered, stained, and in badly need of replacement. Do they run out? Yes. So be prepared and don't ask for replacements at 5pm when everyone is leaving to get ready for dinner. Bad.KIDS CLUB - Offers either video games or arts and crafts. Nice air conditioned area when the kids need a break from the heat and sun. Although they will probably get bored quickly and you don't want your kid playing video games for hours while on vacation. Good.ENTERTAINMENT - Lion King Show, Michael Jackson Show, Circus, Magician, were all great for the kids. Shows start around 8 or 9 in the open air theatre. Light show on the castle, daily at 10pm. Only problem with the venue is that it's hot. Put a large amount of people in that small a space is uncomfortable. The design of the building is what it is but if there's a way to somehow enclose and run some A/C, the guests and entertainers would probably appreciate. Good.DINING - Never used the app or emailed ahead. Booked all a la carte through the concierge. Bookings have to be done by 3pm on any given day. We booked for the week, no issues. Food was not that great overall. Shellfish should not taste 'fishy'. Concerns over refrigeration as cheeses, meats, etc. are left out. The weather is hot and humid, food spoils quickly. Lots of upset stomachs. Oh yes, don't forget to pack the Immodium. Service was hit and miss with really attentive servers and others who couldn't care less. No one goes over and above. If they run out of something, they'll just tell you there's no more instead of going back to the kitchen to retrieve some more. I don't think it's laziness, just a poor sense of service and training. I'm not telling you anything different here than what's been highlighted in almost every review for this property. You do have the ability to access restaurants across all of the Bahia resort properties but the Brazilian, Japanese, Italian, Gourmet and Caribbean we tried were not inspiring, Check that, the pizza at the Italian was hot/fresh and tasty so there was one highlight. Overall, Bad.WiFi - Standard WiFi is included with your stay. Utilize your room number and reservation code that is provided by the front desk to log on. Internet connectivity in lobby is different than in your room so you will have to re-establish connectivity every once in a while. Also, you are logged out automatically after 24 hours, so you have to log in everyday. Reception is spotty at the beach unless you're in the designated WiFi zone. Upgrade to a faster download speed is available for a fee. Limit of two devices per individual logon however we had no problem connecting 3 devices and utilzing the basic free service. Good.BEACH - Seaweed. And lots of it. When you need a tractor to haul it away, that's a bit too much. The DR has some of the nicest beaches in the world but the Bahia Principe property has none of it. Beach chairs are condensed in a somewhat packed format. Remember that there is 7 hotels on the Bahia property and they all share the same beach. Suffice it to say that, we didn't hang out here all that long. Ugly.MANAGEMENT - Similar concerns have been raised by other guest reviews so I would ask Management not to reply with a canned response saying you've contacted the affected departments, are saddened that my expectations weren't met, and welcome a return visit. Fix it! If I'm reading the same issues 6 months to a year from now, we won't be returning. Have a great day!

Summer holiday 2017

Just spent a lovely 2 weeks at the Fantasia with my hubby and 2 kids, and friends. The hotel is clean and friendly and the service is first class.The rooms are extremely spacious, kept clean everyday with the additional option to request extra services on their app.The food is amazing in the buffet restaurant and has some fab staff! Wilfred and Pablo certainly looked after us! But the gourmet restaurant on site was our favourite for food.The butler for our block 98, Kenny was the best! Nothing was too much trouble, he was friendly and always made sure we got what we wanted in regards to our mini bar. He was great and made our holiday.Staff at the pool bar were also friendly and put themselves out to serve you, Juan and Leonal to name a few.Would certainly recommend this hotel.

Great trip!

We just returned from the Luxury Bahia Principe Fantasia (Aug 8-15), travelling with a group of 17 people. Check in/Check out - we were in communication earlier with the hotel to try and organize rooms close together. Unfortunately, half of us were in one building and the rest in the other building. Otherwise the process was seamless. Rooms - they were clean and spacious. We had two double beds and one sofa bed. Rooms were cleaned everyday and we had turn down service in the night with fresh towels, made beds and chocolate. It was a great added touch. Food - food was great and there were a lot of options available. No one should complain about the type or availability of food. In comparison to other hotels that I've been to, food was one of the best I've had!Service - in the restaurants service was hit and miss. The restaurants are busy and the staff tries their best to serve everyone. We had butler service which again was an added service that was good. The butler will help with a wide range of services. There was also 24 hour room service. The guarantee is within 45 minutes to arrive to your room. The bar staff and front desk try their best to help make the stay great. Beaches - the beach is beautiful, but has a lot of seaweed based on weather conditions. There were a couple of days where we could not go in the ocean because there was too much seaweed. We went to the beach in the morning at 7:30am and there wasn't as much seaweed in the ocean. Pools - the pool is huge and quite busy! But there is enough space for everyone. Chairs get reserved very early. By 7:00am all the shaded areas have towels and bags on them already! Entertainment - I wasn't very impressed with the entertainment at the hotel. Having been to many other hotels in the Caribbean, I believe this is one area that the staff/hotel can improve on. Staying at the Fantasia gives you access to all the other hotels. We could go to the bars, restaurants, pools and facilities of the other hotels. This was great when we wanted a change of scenery and something different to do. All in all it was a great trip.

Family vacation - 14 people

Let me start out on a positive note - the hotel and the grounds - BEAUTIFUL! CLEAN! Luxurious! The food - I am somewhat of a foodie - and it did not disappoint - even the buffets for breakfast and lunch - they were very good - and had a phenomenal variety. But, if you really want the truly luxurious experience that you are paying for - make the reservations - AHEAD OF TIME! by email! or you will not get in. Let me also say that this is our second time to this group of resorts - once in 2016 to the AMBAR - adult only - which I would give 100% rating to - this one - the FANTASIA - NOT SO MUCH! the biggest negative - we reserved our block of rooms months in advance - on their website - per the email they sent us - upon arrival - they did not have those rooms available - the reservation does not guarantee those rooms - definitely not what I expected. we reserved two queen rooms and two king rooms - for our family - we received four king rooms spread out - was I happy - absolutely not! Front desk - NIGHTMARE TO DEAL WITH - I was actually treated rudely - I was so angry - not a good start to vacation - only person that was nice and actually cared - FREN at the front desk! housekeeping - not good - at all - even with tips and writing in Spanish the special requests - and forget getting a washcloth!Air conditioning - it has a sensor on it - so upon walking in to the room - it is warm, humid, moldy smell - within an hour - great! they should maybe explain this - however - ours was the only room out of our block that didn't work at all - third time maintenance came - ti was finlly fixed! mini bar - our refrigerator did not even work - got a new one day before we left - if you are staying in 99278 - your room should be perfect! LOL I would suggest non pool side. however - you get what you get. I actually would recommend esmerelda over fantasia - and definitely AMBAR - if you have no children - although if you go ambar - insist on pool view - major construction on the other side. the trams - no longer travel everywhere an pick you up everywhere - designated bus stops now - I do not like that!my BIGGEST COMPLAINT - NO beach or poolside bar service! i'm on vacation - I would like a server to get my drink order - I don't want to have to get up - sorry - call me spoiled. it was not like this last year!however, LORENZO at the beach bar - the best! water gorgeous - there was an extreme amount of seawed from a tropical storm - but htat didn't really bother us. my kids ( all teens) had a fabulous time! we did dune buggy excursion - recommend! and the why not party boat - it was the best!

Amazing holiday

We stayed here 31/07-14/08. First impressions were how beautiful the hotel was. Check in was fast and efficient with staff explains where things were on the map. Room was gorgeous and spacious. The cleaning of the was spot on, always done to a high standard. Towels and bedding changes regular. Mini bar restocked daily, only once there was no beers so a quick app request the concierge and we had beers within 5 mins. When we arrived there were no pool towels in the wardrobe and the shower cubicle was leaking. We attended reception and were given towels straight away. Within 10 mins of getting back to the room (20.15 in the eve) maintenance arrived to silicone it and was all done in 15 mins. The first week we were there service at the buffet and bars was very quick but then the second week it was a lot busier so you expect things to be a little slower (what's the rush anyway you're on holiday). Food in the buffet was plentiful with lots of variety even for fussy eaters, special mention to Anderson and Liliana who were amazing, always rushing around to make sure guests were attended to. Booking of the al cartes was easy this can be done through guest services or the app (times on the app are pm times even though it shows am times e.g. 06.30, 08.45 etc) we managed to get plenty of reservations no problem. The garden circus, laminar Italian, rodizio Brazilian and tex Mexico sante fe were all gorgeous with excellent service. Bars can get busy so may have to wait a little while but again what's the rush. My buddy Leonel in the pool bar works tirelessly and is always laughing and joking. Jose in the lobby bar is also great. The lobby bar can run out of glasses but is it such a hardship if it's a plastic cup !! The lobby waitresses were lovely and helpful, Judelki was fantastic. The evening shows are superb especially Michael Jackson, broadway and the magic show. Around the pool if you want a shaded subbed then you need to be early, towels were never and issue except one day when everyone had their towels out early just before a storm which all needed changing so by 9.30 no towels but the wait for some was only about 20 mins and in the heat you dry without quicker. Around the pool can get very slippy so be careful. If you want to splash out a bit I can certainly recommend the bahiaspa massage $95 but fantastic. The animation team were some of the friendliest people I've ever met. They totally made our stay more fun. Basically this has been the best holiday ever and we will be backOne tip, treat the staff how you would wish to be treated and you'll have no problems. Many of them work many hours and give everything. Thank you to everyone at fantasia. See you again soon 😍
