One of the best family hotels in Punta Cana. Melia Caribe is a large resort, with a beautiful beach. The resort has very attentive and personable staff that will cater to your needs. They are also notable for their kids club. Those who are impartial to walking would enjoy staying in this resort, as its relatively large size also means distances between one area of the hotel to the other.
First off, the check-in was our first sign of trouble. We waited about 30 minutes with only one couple ahead of us at the counter. Even they were annoyed at how long the check-in process was taking. Once it was finally our turn, they told us the room we had was not ready and asked if we would take a room with two beds. Since I was traveling with a friend, we were OK with this. We happily accepted just to get things moving after 12 hours of travel. The room was very sub-par, not updated at all, and a little dingy and honestly could have been cleaner. The fridge had a couple bottles of water and pop, no complimentary alcoholic beverages or snacks. At another all-inclusive resort I have stayed at in Punta Cana we had champagne, Brugal rum, etc in our room every day. Also, there was no 24 hour complimentary room service like other hotels offer. Our TV wasn't working for 2 days - and the lobby said it was a hotel-wide issue. My friend was drying her hair on day 2 and the hair dryer exploded and started smoking. The drinks were watered down - even the wine at restaurants! My biggest complaint was that there was not poolside service. There is nothing better than being served drinks/food poolside - not an option at this resort. Instead you need to walk ALL the way around this massive pool (if you are not willing to use the swim up bar) to order drinks, which come in the smallest plastic cups ever. Also, no matter where your room is, you have a LOT of walking to do. We were close to the pool and beach, but had to walk all the way across the resort to restaurants and the lobby. They had some golf carts, but even after trying to flag them down, barely any would stop to get us, and we tipped every time! Ridiculous. They have a couple of trains that transport people, you are lucky if you are around when one comes, if not you have a 10 minute walk ahead of you. The food was not very good. There were two restaurants you actually have to pay to eat at, not cool. And of course those are the only ones that probably have decent food. Would rather stay at an adults only going forward (if not traveling with kids) and will look for a much higher rated hotel next time. The only good thing was that the beds were comfortable and the beach was beautiful. As two young women we felt safe, but were annoyed at the amount of cat-calling and soliciting that we had to endure while on the beach and grounds.
The main reason we keep coming back to this part of the Caribbean is the people. Everyone is so friendly and service oriented. Food has always been good, but is better prepared this visit. We were able to visit the new YHI Spa & our masseuses, Daniela & Gladys were excellent. I also had color change for fingers and toes by Miriam who did more than necessary. Still looks good after 6 days! At this resort, the people go out of their way to make your stay fun, pampered, delicious and relaxing. We will most definitely be back!
We have been at the Melia Tropical many years in a row and the reason we keep going back is because we feel at home, but in Paradise. Our Villa was amazing and the service, food, pools, and the gorgeous grounds are unbeatable. All the rooms in the resort are wonderful. They offer Adult only pools and restaurants as well as family dining. Top liquor and also entertainment every night. Love, Love this place. Carlos has always treated us as if we were family. This year we instead of 7 we did 11 days but next year it will be two weeks. We know what to expect and are never disappointed.
this is going to be long: but hopefully helpful. Just stayed at the Melia Caribe tropical for 1 week, sat-sat. with myself, husband and two young kids (4,8) also with another family and their 13 month old. pros: 1) the grounds on this place are amazing! very well manicured, there are peacocks everywhere, they are neat ( but they do make a lot of noise at all hours)2) the kids club is amazing! very big, with a pool and lots of outdoor space that is pretty well shaded. The staff in the kids club were wonderful also. the only downside is, it closes at 6pm, so if you want an adult dinner you have to pay for a sitter. You can leave kids here 8 months and up! there are zip lines and a rock climbing wall for kids also.Cons: 1) we paid more to be at the "level" after reading reviews that recommended this. I agree I would pay for the level- you get top shelf alcohol and have a pool and restaurant that are just for level guest which is nice because it is not too crowded- the main pool and bars get very crowded. the down side is- this restaurant, bar and all level rooms that we were in were very far from the beech! also you only get top shelf alcohol at the level bar, of which there is one, on this HUGE property. 2)staff- most were pretty nice, but a few were stand offish, no one was flat out rude though. the room: we had a one bedroom with a huge bathroom with jettub, and as separate shower and vanity in another area, separated with doors. we had a living room with sleeper sofa, dining area and small full kitchen. also had a generous balcony. the décor was slightly dated but nice. they had good toiletries. shower was fairly small.there is room service included, however we had some issues getting our fridge stocked ( they stock with water, soda and beer) they also leave a few snacks, chips and nutsthe beech is beautiful, plenty of chaise lounges. there are quite a few bars, but again no top shelf unless at the level bar.there a lot of restaurants, I think 10, varied in what they offer. overall I would give the food C. I am comparing to all inclusive in Mexico and cruise ships. by the last day or two we were all pretty tired of the foodwe did not watch the nightly shows so I can not comment on those. overall we had a good time, I am glad I went, but I will try a different resort if I go again.
Bad service, they do nothing extra for special occasions such as honey moon, food was ok at some places and other places was just awful, if you did not tip from poor service they will treat you bad there.
