Missin trip

A group of us that belong to a nonprofit traveled to nova chicks where we are building a trade school just outside b/c. We have been going to the Dominican for a number of yrs. this was our first stay at Don Juan and found the rooms very clean. Large with a beautiful view of the waterfront. The bathrooms were very roomy and very clean. Nice shower with immediate hot water

Lots of feedback for the Canadians considering this place.

I made my booking for this resort back in October of 2016. The travel company website (it's not the fault of the hotel) mislead me into believing the Captain Suite was an upgrade when I called to change room types. And the agent didn't let me know I was actually giving up features by changing rooms and charged me more. We stayed in a Captain Suite which does NOT give you access to the Adults Only side of this small resort. The room was clean and well kept by housekeeping the entire two week stay. This is a room which faces the pool and was consequently LOUD! They run Zumba classes on the pool deck three times a day so if you like to siesta, this is not the room for you. They run music shockingly loud throughout the day and night so if you like to go to bed before 11 pm, bring your ear plugs. Some of the staff were incredibly pleasant (Johanna, Guillermo, Antonio). If you are inept with Spanish, you're in for a bit of a challenge. Make an effort in their language and they will be responsive and very service oriented. Otherwise, well, good luck. The power went out for a few minutes every single day during our stay. What all the other reviews say about sales people approaching on the beach is true and plentiful. A kind "no, gracias", usually sends them on their way but it's exhausting. We spent the majority of our time poolside for both the shade and the cleaner water. The coast line of this beach is like swimming in a lagoon and it's quite disgusting after a weekend of tourism littering on the beaches. They work hard to clean it up; I'm sure it's impossible to keep up with though. Commendations to the chefs and cooking staff here. They work some pretty good magic considering the limited ingredients that seem to be available to them. The food is repetitive and a lot of it is deep fried but it was ok considering where we were and what we paid for this resort. Watch for undercooked chicken. I recommend hitting the buffet about 1 to 1-1/2 hours after it opens. They will be replenishing the buffet after the mad rush of people who are racing around like they've never seen food and never will again. During our stay, there were very few English speaking tourists, so if you're not comfortable in that kind of environment, where you have barely any idea what's going on, this may not be the resort for you. The resort was undergoing upgrades while we were there. New pillows, new telephones in the rooms, a new countertop on the snack bar. It will take a lot more for them to get to what North Americans would consider a 3 star resort though. Things to consider:If you don't like climbing stairs to your room, make sure you mention you need ground floor. If you want access to the entire resort including bars, buffets and beaches, you need the "adult only" rooms. And just because you're an adult doesn't give you access to those areas. They get a nicer, less busy beach area is the biggest bonus. Food is the same, just served in different places.

Not at all what I Expected

Travel there March 10 to the 17th. The best part of the vacation was getting away from our winter weather. Did not like all the local vendors harrassing you when you were trying to relax. I counted at one time a pack of 12 dogs walking along the beach (some not looking in very good health, some even sores and scars on them. This did not sit well with me as I am an animal lover. Security chasing them away from coming on the property. Staff not friendly, they interact with each other...laughing and having a good time amongst themselves. We booked the ground floor cause my travelling partner has problems walking, let alone walking up and down stairs. The front desk told us that all the ground floor rooms were all booked. Had to have her climb about 15 stairs to the room. Arrived at dinner time and tried to get the restaurant to let me take food to her...the waiter told me that I could not do that. I explained why but he said no not allowed. Told me to go next door to the other restaurant, when I got there the manager there told me it wasn't all inclusive and asked me who told me that. Went and complained to the front desk and they did have someone escort me back to the first restaurant and got permission from a waitress to let me take food back to the room . After so many attempts I was able to get a handicap room on the ground floor the next day... All in all I would not recommend this resort, will not be back.

My wife and I recently spent two weeks as guests at the Don Juan Beach Hotel in Bocha Chica, Dominician Republic. Our overall experience was reasonably good, primarily since the weather and beach were very enjoyable. Our journey was advertised as a direct flight from Sault Ste Marie to Punta Cana. On departure we learned that there would be about an hour stop in Hamilton, to pick up additional vacationers. On arrival in Punta Cana we discovered that we were in for an hour and a half ride to our hotel. Okay that's part of the travel experience. On arrival at he hotel we checked in and were shown to our room. Having requested a ground floor room, for accessibility, we had been assigned a room technically on the ground floor. However we had to navigate down some steps (4) across an inner courtyard up some steps (4) and around a corner, up two more steps. Not an easily accessible room for anyone with mobility concerns. On arrival at our room we encountered an overwhelming musty smell, no safe in the room (advertised as included) no door on the bathroom and a patio door that could not be locked. Not ideal!I asked at he desk to see another room which we were moved to the next day.The Sunwing brochures advertised the package we had purchased as an adult only upgrade providing specific perks that we would be able to enjoy. The amenities were difficult to find as there was a general lack of signage or information unless we asked specifically. Of the 5 or 6 different extras that we had been told we could use some did not exist, others were unavailable due to our own mobility concerns and one or two were held sporadically in seemingly random locations on the property. Never did see the special cocktail / appetizer hour in our adult section or anywhere else. No one seemed to have any idea about the advertised snorkeling lessons, (both had been advertised). Nor did we see the marine observation area at the marina to allow snorkeling with the fish. Was it all bad? No it wasn't.The food was as good as any 3 star Cuban resort we have stayed at.The beach was a public beach, we could interact with vendors and locals at our choice. The location is in a village / town of Boca Chica, so we could interact with the culture. The beach is situated on the largest natural lagoon in the Caribbean (so we were told). The staff were generally very friendly and helpful. Especially Alfyia the concierge in the adult only section. Our second room was clean, AC worked well and the bedding and utilities were in new condition or working well.On the other side of the coin. The entertainment was not worth staying up for. Two star resorts in Cuba have far superior entertainment to offer guests. Looking out to sea we had the pleasure of watching a steady stream of ocean going ships carrying cargo containers into the adjacent port (within sight). So in summation, would I go back?My wife and I hope to travel and enjoy these experiences as long as we can possibly, physically do it. we have enjoyed ourselves at this resort up to the extent of what the hotel offered. It was lacking in some of the amenities that were advertised and not well organized in my opinion. I believe we will look for other resorts to enjoy before we choose this one again. You may have had a different experience and hopefully it was positive.Travel safe and take insect repellent, I got some nasty bites while on the beach.

Always enjoyable!

This was our second stay at this resort in the last year and we enjoyed ourselves once again. The Animation team here is great, outgoing and friendly. Restaurant staff was helpful and well as the bartenders. Once problem we had was with the Assistant Manger, I think she is Russian? Dark Hair? She was quite rude and not friendly to our group at all. With such a great staff it is disappointing to see a rude manager.
