Location: Beachfront, 90 min from La Romana airport, 45 min to Santo Domingo, 3 hrs to Punta Cana airport.
My husband booked this trip through a site I have never used (orbitz) needless to say I will stick to the gum. 1st off when we reached the airport in Santo Domingo, we were informed that we could not use the shuttle service we paid for and had to pay $20 US for a taxi. While driving through the streets of Boca Chica I was not impressed to say the least and immediately felt uncomfortable and out of my element and that's coming from some one born and raised in NYC in the projects during the crack era. Front desk personnel Jose and Felix were awesome!!!! We were told we had a beautiful suite. It was 8 flights up with no elevators. Our balcony overlooked a noisy pool being utilized by locals. We went to the "snack bar" which only served hamburgers or hot dogs. The food was undercooked and I suffered the consequence the next day. The beach was dirty and swarming with dogs, locals, and vendors. I never saw ants on a beach, but this was a first. The highlight of my 1st day was the buffet dinner was delicious and enjoyable, just be prepared to be surrounded by begging cats. Day 2 much of the same and my husband and I ventured to the adult side and was informed by the front desk that due to water issues the adult side was closed. The pool, the restaurant, and bar were all closed. Dinner again was delicious, but we were surrounded by begging cats again. Wi-Fi is only available in the lobby. After day 2, I had enough and we moved to a BEAUTIFUL property only 3 minutes away. We had several other guest complain and leave as well
Impossible to communicate. Very little English with staff. Balance of tourists did not speak English. Food was excellent. Who doesn't love fresh fruit and fish. Staff was as helpful as could be. Had two rooms across from each other. Myself and husband in one and my two teenage children in the other. Beach was clean in front of hotel but the balance of the beach was public and after everyone went home it was pretty bad. Impossible to have a cabana on beach. A very limited number and some of the tourists were quite rude and felt they were more entitled then others. I actually saw some verbal arguments between patrons of the hotel. I would not return only because of the rudeness of some of the visitors staying at the hotel.
I went there for a short vacation, 3 days. Sad: i was there and 2 days of rain. But thanks to the staff and the hotel I could still relax and enjoy my stay. The 3+* Star hotel offers more than expected. I ordered a stay at the Adult Only - and get a huge surprise. Your separation to the normal part guarantees you a private space at the pool. Staff with a lot of attention, huge rooms with ocean view. Yes, the safe and WiFi is included, so the upgrade for Adult Only is worth it! And you get the possibility to go once a week to the Marina, a dream location.
A group of us that belong to a nonprofit traveled to nova chicks where we are building a trade school just outside b/c. We have been going to the Dominican for a number of yrs. this was our first stay at Don Juan and found the rooms very clean. Large with a beautiful view of the waterfront. The bathrooms were very roomy and very clean. Nice shower with immediate hot water
I made my booking for this resort back in October of 2016. The travel company website (it's not the fault of the hotel) mislead me into believing the Captain Suite was an upgrade when I called to change room types. And the agent didn't let me know I was actually giving up features by changing rooms and charged me more. We stayed in a Captain Suite which does NOT give you access to the Adults Only side of this small resort. The room was clean and well kept by housekeeping the entire two week stay. This is a room which faces the pool and was consequently LOUD! They run Zumba classes on the pool deck three times a day so if you like to siesta, this is not the room for you. They run music shockingly loud throughout the day and night so if you like to go to bed before 11 pm, bring your ear plugs. Some of the staff were incredibly pleasant (Johanna, Guillermo, Antonio). If you are inept with Spanish, you're in for a bit of a challenge. Make an effort in their language and they will be responsive and very service oriented. Otherwise, well, good luck. The power went out for a few minutes every single day during our stay. What all the other reviews say about sales people approaching on the beach is true and plentiful. A kind "no, gracias", usually sends them on their way but it's exhausting. We spent the majority of our time poolside for both the shade and the cleaner water. The coast line of this beach is like swimming in a lagoon and it's quite disgusting after a weekend of tourism littering on the beaches. They work hard to clean it up; I'm sure it's impossible to keep up with though. Commendations to the chefs and cooking staff here. They work some pretty good magic considering the limited ingredients that seem to be available to them. The food is repetitive and a lot of it is deep fried but it was ok considering where we were and what we paid for this resort. Watch for undercooked chicken. I recommend hitting the buffet about 1 to 1-1/2 hours after it opens. They will be replenishing the buffet after the mad rush of people who are racing around like they've never seen food and never will again. During our stay, there were very few English speaking tourists, so if you're not comfortable in that kind of environment, where you have barely any idea what's going on, this may not be the resort for you. The resort was undergoing upgrades while we were there. New pillows, new telephones in the rooms, a new countertop on the snack bar. It will take a lot more for them to get to what North Americans would consider a 3 star resort though. Things to consider:If you don't like climbing stairs to your room, make sure you mention you need ground floor. If you want access to the entire resort including bars, buffets and beaches, you need the "adult only" rooms. And just because you're an adult doesn't give you access to those areas. They get a nicer, less busy beach area is the biggest bonus. Food is the same, just served in different places.
