Casa Marina Reef Resort

Nice resort with very nice grounds, pools were great. Rooms need a major reno. Good location. The entertanment was very cheesy. Deal breaker: the food, HORRIBLE, too bad this could be a great place if the food was good.
If you are expecting 5 star amenities for 3 star price , you are at the wrong place . The location is great , about 15 minutes from the airport . I have visited this hotel many times and have never seen anyone starve . You can always find something to eat . The rooms are decent and clean and the staff are mostly pleasant and helpful . They are slowly losing their beach to erosion , but there is a public beach right beside it . Many Canadian friendly bars nearby in town , which is a pleasant surprise . Overall a good bang for your buck .
R & R?! Yeah...more like quick-rising blood pressure trials. What a waste of my money and a waste of time for my daughter and I. Oh wait...I can't finish my review right now, the internet I just paid for doesn't work in my room!!-Staff couldn't care any less-Sub-standard room, no better than a $20/night motel along the interstate-being seated with strangers for meals-asking twice and still not being served beverages at dinner, not even a glass of waterSave your money, use it somewhere worth staying...not here!
Went for a week and I felt like we were in a 1 star resort!I'll easily break it down because this could be a lengthy review otherwisePROSIts a resort in a hot destinationCONStheir "Air conditioning"food (spent an extra $1,000 off the resort getting food that was actually editable)Alcohol and drinks were horrid! Bought alcohol off the resort to make drinksService (there was NO service)Bar and restaurant hours (2 bars open during the day causing long lineups with one server who couldn't make a decent drink to save their life, bars close at 1am)Location (cant swim in the water because the waves are too violent)All Inclusive included NOTHING. Want a chair on the beach? You gotta rent it. Want an umbrella on the beach? Well that's not free eitherOwn resort guests steal others towels so you cant leave anything unattended, anywhere, everSosua as a town is a horrible place. You cannot walk 5 steps without someone approaching you wanting something- go into their shop, taxi, massage, hair braiding etc.If you stay on the first floor you were leaving your room every few days to be fumigatedIf you stayed on the top floor your room would leak when it rainedPaying for 24 hours of internet only gave you 15 hours if you're lucky because their internet was constantly outBeach towels couldn't be changed daily because they were constantly out of clean ones"Ocean View" means that you are in a room where the ocean is in the direction of your room, but past the tress and buildings and the bar. I wouldn't suggest this place to my worst enemy!
When we booked this resort, as a larger group and travelling during high season (March Break) the biggest selling feature was the price. We were willing to go with a budget style resort if it meant a week in the sun. This review will be a little lengthy but presented in fine detail and please feel free to let me know if it was useful or not.CHECK INUpon arrival, the lobby is very small with minimal seating area. It gets crowed very easily. Our check in was very quick, got our TV remote, paid for a safety box 15US - the lobby people were professional and friendly and processed a bus load of us in minutes. We immediately were directed to the side entrance to the resort were a bell boy was waiting to take our luggage and we were zipped off to our rooms. WIFINo not anymore - I bought my daughter a one week unlimited WIFI (one device only) for 30US Dollars.ROOMSWe were put in rooms 2545, 2549 and 2553 (as we were three families). We had asked for rooms next to one another facing the pool and double beds in all rooms. Our requests were not granted as the hotel was fully booked, instead we were facing basically the back of another resort on the second floor. No view. The rooms did have two double beds a functioning bathroom dated but decent. Clean and everything seemed to work except our phone and our night table lamp (but they weren't used so I am not going to dwell over that). I would suggest anyone going to take a plug in nightlight for the washroom as it has a very loud fan and it connected to the light switch. At night I like to leave the light on so I can see where I'm going if I have to use the loo. We had a working hairdryer, air conditioning, and plenty of hangers in our closet. I took two collapsible bins for under garments and swims suits. Our patio door was in poor condition (it was hard to open and close it - but once you had it closed a nail like gadget inserts to provide a safety lock for the door. Our room was cleaned daily and restocked with water and soda. Our towels were also replaced daily. The beds were comfortable but small if you are sharing. I shared with my husband and my daughter got her own bed. We went to management and they did offer us some other rooms to move to but they didn't have enough for all of us - and to be honest we were happy with our rooms and we just wanted to get settled in and start our vacation.FOODThere were two major buffets open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was really impressed with their food handling procedures. Hot was hot and cold was cold. I ate at both and can't say one was better than the other. I am not a picky eater and enjoy eating things I am not accustomed to or new to me. I enjoyed the buffet closer to the main entrance as it was a little more calm and relaxed. The have a snack bar that opens daily were they do the a la carte restaurants that serves burger, fries, chicken and fast food items. There is also a midnight burger bar near the disco that open at midnight if anyone is still hunger they can grab a burger. The food over all was good and I was really pleased, after vacationing in Cuba for the last two years - this was a pleasant surprise. I ate well and I was very satisfied. The variation from grilling stations, pasta stations, taco stations and so on - was well done. Line ups - never long enough to feel like you were actually waiting in line for food - that just didn't happen and it was a very busy week. A la carte restaurants (that was the longest line I stood in to make reservations). We ate at the Italian, Mexican and Seafood. I was not impressed with them at all - I regret waisting time standing in line to book them because the food was far below anything you would be served in the buffet. If I had to pick one maybe the seafood was just ok. BARSThere are four bars (three on the resort) one on the beach. There is also one in the disco. The one outside of the disco opens late. I never found myself looking for something to be open and I stayed up pretty late. The staff was good and fast and the occasional line up would quickly get served. Being polite and patient will get you a long way and tipping also helps - but I never felt like it was expected as I had in my previous vacations elsewhere. I didn't try any of their fruity sweet drinks, the beer is decent. I stuck mostly to the whiskey and it was not good at all. I wish they had had better quality alcohol nothing fancy just not the in house stuff. Philadelphia, J&B, Ballantine - they just don't and its a shame.COFFEEI had coffee everyday, but the reason I am putting it under its own heading is because I was so surprised they didn't have a coffee bar. Not one! No specialty coffee, no high tech coffee machines. All the coffee was placed in a big earn that you serve yourself. One of my favourite parts of vacationing is having a delicious cup of coffee and that really didn't happen.POOLSWe hung at the main pool most days. Reserving chairs - really if you are up before about 9:30 - 10 AM you will still find spots available. I would generally get up around 8 and go and hold 5 chairs four our group of 8. We would only hold our chairs if we were planning on spending our time at the pool. I saw empty chairs all around the pool throughout the day. Some silly people would reserve there chairs the night before and leave them reserved all day and never show up to claim there spots. The pool was super clean - and cleaned daily (there is no swim up bar - hence a clean pool). The animation team is awesome and work so hard to try and get everyone involved in activities. BEACHThe beach is beautiful but the water can be very rough. Obey the flags, we had two red days, three yellow and two green. Went in on green and stupidly on yellow and almost lost my bottoms. There are two beach sides one that is shared with other resorts on the reef side and one private on the beach side (that one has a bar). You can rent umbrella's for three US dollars which we did three times. I really don't mind paying for an umbrella it helps ensure those who really want to use one get one rather than them being taken and not used. RESORTBeautiful, always cleaning. Plenty of shade if you needed it. Every morning when I was sitting at pool I would watch a huge crew of men washing all the stone walk ways from the entrance of the hotel all the way down towards the ocean. The grounds, trees, flowers and vegetation are gorgeous. The resort is big but not huge and I found getting around and running back to my room was rather simple. Lighting in the evening was good. Public washrooms for guest also very clean. Security was very visible and made sure guest behave. We never had any loud drunks at night and slept very soundly (maybe we were just lucky). The nice thing is I didn't feel that this was a wild resort and it had a lot of families, seniors and some young adults but everyone seemed very respectful.ENTERTAINMENTEvery night they had a show or some sort of interactive thing going on for their guest. They put a lot of pride in their shows and my family really enjoyed them. STAFFGracious, polite and friendly. We never had an occasion were we felt the staff did not go above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. These men and women work very hard and very long hours and manage to always be smiling. Sometimes in the evening a few guys from the morning animation team and the nightly entertainment (after 12 hours of work- would join my husband for a pool game). Thank you to all the staff at Casa Marina!!SOSOAI left the resort a couple of time. As a women I was a little nervous on my own - but I was never harassed some vendors would be more insisted than others. I think if I had a better idea of were I was going - the experience would have been better. Many people leave the resort and their are a lot of restaurants, bars and a huge nightlife if you want to experience that. I was happy and content in the compounds of our resort.RETURNI would definitely consider going back. We had a great time, we felt welcomed and well cared for at this resort.
