Subway: Victor Hugo or Charles de Gaulle-Etoile (RER)
The 12th is a great sector, maybe the best for walking tours of the city and Victor Hugo is a good value, friendly place to be. At the end of the road, on the square (round-a-bout) of the Victor Hugo metro, is possibly the best patisserie we've visited, plus a very good selection of very typical Parisian restaurants. It's easy to feel like a local here.
Unlike many hotels in Paris and elsewhere, the Victor Hugo has not yet been turned into an anonymous clone of thousands of other hotels around the world. It is still characteristically French, though the entrance lobby, breakfast room and reception is very modern. This is not to say it's out of date, though hotels in older buildings in Paris do have rooms on the small side but you don't go to Paris to spend time in your room! The lifts (elevators) are tiny - signed for 3 people but they have to be slim and without heavy coats or luggage. The room was comfortable with a very modern bathroom, looking onto a central courtyard, so quiet (though the Rue Copernic is not very busy anyway). WiFi is free and easily accessed. Welcoming reception staff, very helpful for local information, booking taxis (which arrived quickly!) etc. My only criticism is that they did not have postage stamps for postcards (I'm rather old fashioned when it comes to communications!) and the nearest post office is some distance away. Breakfast (€19) good value, self service and including fresh fruit and good quality fruit juices; attentive staff providing coffee/tea. A very good base for exploring parts of Paris on the right bank towards the Arc de Triomphe. Note that from January 2017 the hotel is no longer part of the Best Western group.
This hotel is great. Simple, clean, warming, the staff very polite. The breakfast was a good surprise! And the location is perfect! 3 blocks from the Arc and from the Tower. I strongly suggest it and certainly will be there again and again. Loved it!
Our bedchamber was a bit small and the elevators reminded me of standing in a 1950's phone booth--literally. Surprisingly there were no wash cloths, but my wife being ever prepared, made this issue moot. Nonetheless, it was all part of the charm and ambiance of the place. The hotel is very convenient to the Metro <5 minute walk to the Victor Hugo stop. . There you will find a pharmacy, ATM, ice cream shop, a delicatessen and restaurants. The Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysees are about a 10-15 hike. The room was always clean and the temperature comfortable. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful with a bonjour each time we saw them, asking how is our stay and if there is anything they can assist with. Whatever we needed was attended to without delay. When evaluating a good or service, I ask myself what value did I receive for what I paid. In this case, the value exceeded the rate. I would stay there again without exception.
We booked this hotel mainly for location and access to the 'major' sights of Paris, both by Metro and walking . We very pleasantly surprised at the quality and style of the hotel. It has excellent friendly and helpful staff, the room was to a very high standard with great facilities, very clean. A very nice reception area and bar which is a nice place to relax and plot out your day. I would highly recommend this hotel as a base for seeing Paris and a fabulous place to relax.
