Hotel Des Mines is a perfect place if all you need is a place to keep your luggage and sleep. For the budget traveler who prefers hotel to hostel, and especially if you are a couple. This is the place. 2 minutes walk from the train station overlooking the Luxemborg garden. The area is filled with eateries and shops. All major attractions within walking distance except Eiffel Tower. Room are small but this is Paris. You can't expect anything more. The staff at the reception speaks good English. Wifi is good and breakfast is simple. What more can you ask for.
Terrible hotel room - small, smelly. Worst hotel on our trip. Only good thing was location. It is within walking distance to many tourist attractions like Notre Dame, St. Germain shops. Also very near metro stops.
I suppose this hotel is not bad for a 2 star. Most of the staff are extremely friendly and went out of their way to help us during our stay. There was one member of staff who was a little poor though- didn't catch his name but he is young, dark haired and often covered the night shift- he's very anti social and couldn't even manage a goodbye or a smile when we checked out. The rooms are tiny and the first room we were offered was too small to even get inside with out suitcases! The staff kindly changed to a bigger room on request though, which we greatly appreciated. As others have said the location of this hotel is great. The noise from the trains is very disturbing but i took some earplugs which blocked out the sound. Bathroom and rooms were clean. We didn't have the breakfast but would warn anyone against choosing the breakfast included option. We were in Paris for work and had to leave the hotel at 6am every morning - by 6am the breakfast croissants, pastries, bread and juice were already laid out on the tables uncovered! Surely they would dry up by the time someone comes down for breakfast at 9am or 10am? At least they should be kept covered, or the juice poured fresh from the fridge? I certainly wouldn't want to eat a breakfast that has been sitting out for at least 3-4 hours...
This hotel has won my heart among 3 different hotels I stayed in Paris area recently. You get what you pay for so, the rooms are very small but adequately equipped. The small desk and chair, the safe, and the bathroom's shower which may be couldn't accomodate the larger body type was absolutely sufficient for me. Again, the room with comfortable clean double bed(N. American Queen size) was basicly good for one person as there wasn't enough room for 2 large suitcases. I had a quiet room looking in to the court yard as I asked for it. Good, well insulated and, openable window was a welcome element. I've seen the A/C unit but of course didn't use it in Winter. The heater was there to.The bathroom had a built in hair dryer. The nicest part however was a lovely reception staff always ready to help or advice. I didn't use the local breakfast but it looked good (10 Euros extra) There is also a well priced airport shuttle(25Euros comparing with the taxi 55Euros) which has to be ordered a day earlier. Will come and pick you at the appropriete time when you tell them when your plane leaves, even at ungodly morning hours. The hotell is well situated in the quieter part of the Boulvard St. Michel. Very close to Luxembourg gardens, RER station line B which goes to CDG airport. It is also close(12 minutes walk ) from the good eating areas at the Bottom of St Michel, Notre Dame, Ste Chapelle and, other city attractions as Paris is ideal walking city. Good budget hotel in 5th arrondisement.
Very friendly staff and really clean rooms. The hotel itself is very close to a few really nice restaurants and shops. The beds are welcoming and cozy. The air conditioning in our room, however, was only giving out hot air. But we just opened the window instead and let some cool air in. Definitely would stay again, as the location is a selling point in and of itself.
