Havibg spent time in this area of Paris in the past I really enjoyed the location of the hotel. Not the most spacious or luxurious hotel by any means, but for the price I had (80€ excl breakfast) it was more than acceptable.
We stayed at Hotel des Mines some years ago and so we decided to stay there again just recently because of its great location and good value. We were delighted to see that it has had some recent refurbishment. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we would recommend this charming little hotel for anyone wanting a few days in Paris.
We just had a very pleasant 4 night stay at Hotel des Mines. Its location is perfect, right by the Luxembourg Gardens and the RER B train line to and from both CDG Airport and Gare du Nord train station. There are very good small restaurants close by: L'Estrapade, Le Timbre, La Bastide Odeon, Le Bistrot des Campagnes. It is also on bus route 82 that goes to the Eiffel Tower and Bus 81 to Montmartre. Hotel des Mines offers an excellent breakfast for 10 Euros. The bathrooms are large enough and have heated towel racks. The rooms have a closet, table, and TV, but no drawers. The bed, pillows, and duvet are very comfortable. The staff at the main desk are always friendly. We paid 141 Euros ($155) a night which is a bargain in Paris. This was our 4th stay at Hotel des Mines and we hope to return soon.
Rooms are very small. My shower was so small that I had to step outside the shower to soap myself. WiFi is functional, but very slow at times. Everything is clean, but a bit a frayed. This is not high end luxury pampering. However, the location is excellent, next to the Luxembourg Gardens and the Latin Quarter, right on a RER line. Staff is very friendly. It is very atmospheric, in that the whole place has this "ex pat writer living in Paris between the wars" vibe. And the room rates are absolutely cheap. Highly recommended based on price and personality.
This was our first trip to Paris, and it was booked through a package with Transat. What a gift it was that we were booked into the Hotel Des Mines! Some of the front desk staff is a little reserved, but Clement (my apologies if I have misspelled your name!) was fantastic. He always had a ready smile, was helpful and happy natured. He very kindly indulged my attempts to converse with him in french. He, by far, was my favourite front desk person. The lovely Angele (again, my apologies for any misspelling) in the bistro/breakfast room was very sweet as well. The breakfast was always beautifully laid out, and she made the best coffee. The hotel itself is great. Our room was on the top floor and faced the courtyard in the back of the hotel. While the room was quite small, the bed was very comfortable, the pillows were great and the bathroom was spacious, with great water pressure in the shower. The hotel and our room were spotless. My only real complaint is that there were no face cloths provided - everything was either a hand towel, or bath towel, so washing my face was a little different (I just used a hand towel - a little rough but it did the job!). In hindsight I probably could have spoken to the front desk, but it wasn't a big enough issue (though I will pack one next time, just to be safe!). The location is fantastic - less than a block away from an RER station - and you can walk north on Boulevard Saint Michel and get to the most amazing area by St. Severin church, Notre Dame, the Louvre... I would stay there again based on the location alone. And while we were aware of the rumbling from the RER, it was never really a bother. It became part of the background noise very quickly and we didn't often notice it. In general, because our room faced the courtyard, it was very quiet. I was actually quite shocked that we didn't hear traffic in our rooms....and there's always traffic on the Boulevard! :) In short, the hotel is lovely, Paris is lovely and I simply can't wait to go back! Special thanks to Clement and Angele for contributing to our amazing holiday!
