Mayan Princess Beach Resort

We stayed at the Mayan Princess with a group of divers and the service was fantastic. I would highly recommend the on-site dive shop which I will be reviewing separately. The people who work at the resort are friendly and helpful. The drinks and food were good. We received towel animals daily which is always a nice touch. The pool is beautiful, it is missing a few tiles but, it doesn't detract from the experience or the appearance. The main reason why I am giving Mayan Princess 4 stars instead of 5 is because the wi-fi was pretty terrible and the shower in our room had two temperatures-scalding and freezing. Maintenance did come and check the shower but, there wasn't an improvement.
Our cab driver recommended the resort to spend the day on the beach. They had different packages that included food and drinks. We opted just for the admission and chair package that was $10. Glad that's all we spent. We ended up going to a neighboring resort for drinks. The bar staff was not friendly and the drinks were nothing to write home about. I would say it was worth the $10 to have a home base on the beach, but that's about it. Bring your patience with you....we were accosted wherever we went by all kinds of locals pushing all kinds of things. We've been all over the Caribbean, and this island is at the top of the list for annoying peddlers
We spent 7 nights at the Mayan Princess, our first visit to Roatan. Our room was excellent. It had a kitchen, a living room, a balcony with patio furniture for four, and a bedroom with king bed. Very clean and very comfortable. Only minor complaint is please provide a sink stopper that actually works in both the kitchen and bathroom. It was a minor thing though. The room was comfortable and housekeeping did a great job. As a trained bartender, the Mayan Princess fails bar tending 101. Any bar, especially at a resort, must contain the most basic and simple alcohols and liquors. This is a no brainer and simply not up for opinion or debate. So this means regular whisky, scotch, gin, rum, vodka, tequila, bourbon, at a minimum. But they didn't have regular whiskey. all they had was scotch and bourbon. And they failed to have the basic mixers that any bar should stock. This is a simple thing. We knew the food was going to be marginal because of the reviews and it was. but even with the use of low quality ingredients, there is no excuse for poor preparation and standards. these are simple things that any institutional food service should be able to do. They failed miserably in this regard. You don't cook all the food and bring it out on the buffet at once. You bring it out in stages to keep it fresh. The sausage product they used for breakfast was literally dog food quality and the consistency of a loose hot dog. They served the same exact desserts day after day after day. and they weren't' good.We came later in the dinner service one night for the BBQ and they were pretty much out of most meats but half the darn employees had large plates of food and were sitting there eating with the guests. They reheated some dried bits of meat and tried to serve it to me. Completely inappropriate and unacceptable. The meal hours are limiting. I am on vacation and want to be able to eat breakfast early or late. So if I wanted to go scuba diving early, breakfast wasn't open. If I wanted to sleep in, breakfast was closed. Basically the food was a huge disappointment with a few exceptions. The cheese burger was great. the omelette station was also great. What was frustrating is most of the food issues were about poor execution. Yes, they used low quality ingredients but if executed well, it would have been bearable.Thankfully we knew going in that the food wasn't good but I did not realize how poor it wold be or how simple it would be to fix it. Heck, with 26 years in the hospitality business, I could fix their problems.
Had a great trip to the Mayan Princess via Groupon. Their dive shop treated us well and other than having to put up with some groups from the cruise ships, it was terrific. There are 3 restaurants you can reserve and a buffet. Plenty of food! Plantains every way you can imagine for every meal lol! Yumm! The steak house was good and try the steak with the coffee marinade - wow! Multiple bars. We had the all inclusive and never had to want for food or beverages. Our housekeeper was a ninja and kept things neat and clean and left us bottled water. Don't even brush your teeth with the water or you will get montezuma's revenge! If you are prone to bug bites; bring spray! I never got bit once but someone else in our party got eaten alive! Really beautiful resort; nice people who work there! The locals on the beach can get a little aggressive trying to sell you things; stay on your side of the line and summon security guard and he will tell them to get lost! Would go back in a minute! Overall loved the staff, the spa, the dive shop, the entire place!
Great hotel, beautiful beach and very warm people, very, very good food ,excellent I will say.Every employee treat us very friendly and helpful with us.i will give the service by personal a 5 star and I will go back again without think about it.
