Turquoise Bay Dive and Beach Resort

Loved the experience. My FOURTH visit and the quality, environment and atmosphere can't be matched. The diving is first rate and the food is incredible. Our group enjoyed a fun-filled photo week that included a number of great dives followed by exceptional meals.
The resort caters to diving groups, but worked well for our tour group as well. Built on a hill overlooking the water, most rooms are large and have great views. The inclusive package featured alcohol, a pool, snorkeling, kayaks, paddle boards and palapas on the bay beach. Meals were excellent, especially the dinners; one night featured pasta cooked with one's own selected ingredients, and another an outdoor barbecue. Evening music on the patio added to the ambience. The staff were amazingly polite and helpful. The resort is located on a far end of the island, which necessitates transportation if leaving the hotel. There was a pick up and drop off service to the Roatan airport.
We enjoyed our stay at this resort. The staff was helpful, friendly and welcoming. Some of the food was great, other items not so great. The buffets included a good variety of food. Some of the items I enjoyed the most were the homemade local foods- delicious empanadas, tacos and tostadas! Our room was clean, comfortable and attractive with a lovely ocean view. There is a stable on the property- horses and a friendly mule roam the resort and lend a hand with the lawn trimming. The staff must do a great job cleaning up after them because we never saw or smelled droppings. Some of our group went horseback riding and had a great time. Negatives for me were- the resort is on the leeward side of the island and the lack of a steady breeze seemed to equal more bugs and more bug bites. Even though I was diligent with the bug spray, I still got a number of bug bites even around my hairline and on my scalp. Another small downside to this area- I was at the resort to scuba dive and was a little disappointed there was no shore diving. The reef is further out and there is boat traffic and a bit of jet ski traffic from time to time so shore diving is not a possibility.
The resort is at a beautiful location on the beach. Our room had a balcony overlooking the sea. The rooms are similar to a low to middle end hotel in the states, but were clean enough and big enough, but no chairs. The beach is beautiful. The package includes 3 meals a day. Usually buffet style and there was always plenty of food and choices for all pallets. The was often entertainment at the poolside. The biggest plus was the staff. Very friendly and helpful. The bar pours generous drinks. You can go kayaking or horseback riding. I loved the riding through the beach and water and up and down hills on narrow trails. Great fun. We were stuck an extra week because of the hurricane in FL. They gave us a decent rate and we had a great extra week. The affiliated dive shop Subway on a separate review.
We enjoyed a lovely week at Turquoise Bay in August/September. We did seem to stay during a highly atypical time, with only 8 weekday guests during our visit. We stayed in an ocean view room which was comfortable & well appointed. The balcony provided a lovely view of the sun setting over the ocean. The food was excellent and plentiful, including local choices and fresh seafood. There was always a freshly grilled and/or prepared option. We enjoyed everything from lobster to bbq to pasta. The outdoor patio was a great spot for a sundowner from the bar! Speaking of the bar, they did an excellent job, though I might suggest adding some fresh fruit juice options.Turquoise Bay has a lovely, private beach with loungers and shaded hammocks, though it was difficult to avail ourselves of them because of the biting bugs endemic to the bay islands. The pool is thoughtfully placed above and separate from the beach to provide a respite from being bitten. All in all we would be happy to return to Turquoise Bay in the future.
