Turquoise Bay Dive and Beach Resort

Although small in size Turquoise Bay Beach and Dive Resort packs a lot into their resort. Staff, food and drinks, room comfort are wonderful--at least for us. We found this to be one of the only resorts visited in the last 9 years that offered delicious seafood and fish regularly as well as very wonderful beef and vegetable dishes. I so wanted the recipe for the coating on the chicken and fish strips served as the late afternoon snack. Never had better! I do wish there had been more fresh juice but the fresh fruit satisfied my fruit craving. Desserts were varied and just the right size. Coffee never seemed to get old tasting. We found that staff working in the resort from the industrious grounds people to the bartenders, chefs, servers, receptionists, and drivers were cheerful, friendly and helpful as well as courteous and accommodating. This is sometimes not the easiest thing to do with people visiting from so many different countries. Thumbs up to all :)We also truly enjoyed meeting a number of other guests from Canada, Germany and the United States. Perhaps our paths will cross another time as divers and snorkelers seem to find these special places. Our vacation was relaxing yet busy and two weeks flew by far too quickly. Wish we could have stayed longer.Should we return I would look for better fitting screens on the windows and sliding doors as most had gaps which let in the dreaded no-see-ums which seemed to have us in their sights at all times. Being able to get fresh air would certainly cut the air conditioning bill. We kept our room at 25 at night and turned it off when we were out because it took very little time to cool the room on return. (Very quiet units.)We are home in BC with spring birds arriving but it is not Roatan with all its greenery and beautifully warm water filled with such varied life--we miss all of you at Turquoise Bay and hopefully we'll meet again.
This resort is off the charts in making us feel welcome. The staff is excellent and very nice. They waited on us hand and foot and made us feel so very special. The rooms are a bit dated but what do you expect from a small island resort. I don't really have anything bad to say except don't forget your bug spray on the beach at sunset!! I thought I would be fine without it and got at least a thousand bug bites....not even kidding! The dive shop is right there and they are amazing as well. Everyone was so friendly and the internet was spotty but we could utilize it from just about anywhere most of the day. I am a bodybuilder and I was still able to lift a little while I was there on vacation. Love this place and would go back in a heartbeat!
Incredible location. Beautiful rooms, wonderful view of the reef, great food, great entertainment, and nice pool and beach. Scuba/snorkeling on site. Kayaks available. Tours available. Everything was outstanding. However, the best reason to stay there is for scuba. On site dive shop.
Well its that time of year again to write a travel review so here goes. I will start with the pros as there are way more than the cons.PROS: STAFF I have always said each resort either makes it or breaks it with the staff. I can honestly say this resort makes it with this fantastic crew from the servers to the cooks to the bartenders to the dive shop to the worker on the beach who tirelessly manages to keep the beach area clean. They all need to be congratulated ( Cindy and Cindy1, Pablo, Kervie, Rocky, Rocken Ronney, Fast Eddy.) just to name a few. If I left anyone out be assured that you are all included in this review. I wish to thank Cindy at the tour desk for going out of her way day in and day out for the time she invested in getting me some medicine when I needed it. Thanks to you my foot is better. To the driver who spent time waiting around for us at West End while we were there visiting friends...thanks Ronny. And a special thanks to Ricco (?) who is doing his best to make all things possible for all clients.ROOMS: The rooms were kept clean every day but a little dated. Rooms are a good size. We had towel art on the bed each night. Big thanks to the Cleaning staff. Our air conditioner crapped out on us and the outlet in the bathroom was not working and the screen door didn't open properly...I must say all these things were REPLACED not just fixed. That to me speaks volumes to how the place is managed..well done. We had room 9 which to me was one of the best rooms on the resort...in my opinion. I had the best sunset views ever. The bed was just under firm and I had no trouble sleeping on it.FOOD:The selection of food available was small as it is a small resort. There was always something you can eat each meal that kept you satisfied. Each night was different and one night lobster and shrimp and other seafood all you can eat...I think i ate too much lobster..lol..You can ask for anything and the staff will see if they can cook you other things...it was great to see this kind of commitment with the cooking staff. BAR:WOW what can i say about the bar staff....exceptional...They made you whatever you like as long as they have the ingredients. We were down at the beach often and the bar staff brought down buckets of beer on a regular basis...now thats dedication. All the drinks were good but my favorite was the Monkey La La..you have to try it..its just like a dessert. My wife wanted a glass of wine to go back to the room and they gave us the whole bottle. Great crew there.FRONT DESKThe ladies at the front desk are very well versed in english and will go out of there way to make sure you have everything you need. There are no fridges in the rooms but upon asking the ladies at the front desk....they got one for me and a stand to put it on.TOUR DESKCindy at the tour desk just outside the main entrance is by far the best person to book your taxis, excursions..whatever you want to do. She even came around and asked if we wanted to do something for a while on a Sunday. She took a group over to Punta Gorda for a weekly Sunday party with dancing eating and drinking with the locals...I didn't go as my foot was bothering me at the time. Cindy went with me on a few occasions to pick up some things at the mall. THANKS Cindy.RESORT GROUNDSThe grounds at the resort were very well kept. Lots of flowers all around. I can even smell them on my walk to my room. Everything was clean and well groomed.ACTIVITIESThere are a few activities on the resort that you can do...Diving, of course is the main activity but other things include snorkeling (15 dollars US ) to get you out to the reef to snorkel, Volleyball, Horseback riding, kayaking, paddle boarding, lounging on the hammocks, at the beach. Or as I have mentioned before book some excursions with Cindy to West End or other places of interest on the island...there are plenty. Now I will attempt to continue with the CONS...some may be minor and may not be a problem for some.CONSOne big complaint we had was the fact that the biting bugs were relentless in their attack on us at the beach...if it wasn't for that one thing, this resort would be one of the best one I've been too. It was partially my fault too in not spraying myself enough so if you are coming here be sure to bring lots of bug spray, I cant emphases this enough. We were in room 9 which was further away from the main building and found the lighting not to be sufficient. Many brought their own flashlights with them. The entertainment was minimal. Only a few activities a couple of times a week. This resort is not really for people with disabilities as there are no ramps and is a bit hilly. We found the rattan 2 seater on our balcony was too large for the space as we could not open and close the screen door. They may want to replace it with a smaller 2 seater. This is just a minor thing to us. Coffee was not hot at all..just warm...we asked the wait staff to reheat our coffee every morning. You may want to look at replacing the coffee machine guys.Snorkeling off the beach is not the best at all and if you want to go out to the reef you have to get at least 4 ppl to go with in order for them to take you out. So just be aware that you just cant say take me out whenever. There are some grouping of fish under the dock that may interest you..but the best is out at the reef.Internet was spotty at times but could get connected at the pool and in my room..but not on the beach. All in all we had a great time except for the bug bites. We enjoyed the staff a lot and maybe we will venture back again some day with lots of spray...lol.. We enjoyed ourselves , the staff and the other clients at the resort from canada.
We are owners of a 5 star IDC Facility in Columbus Ohio We have made no less than 10 trips to Roatan over the years. We have always stayed at resorts in West End, West Bay and South Side of Island and have done a bit of diving on North Side. Turquoise Bay sits on the North East end of Roatan where we never have been diving. We have known Darren Ebanks (Dive Shop Manager) for years and when he told us about the great diving in that area we were excited to check it out though every dive shop manager claims they have great diving. We went, and my goodness was he right. Mary's Place has always been a popular site on Roatan because of the cuts through the reef. There was no reason to visit Mary's place on this trip given terrain of the reef in this area. Everything had swim throughs and caverns and amazing life. We saw Toad fish the size of footballs and more tame Morays than you can shake a stick at. The dive staff is well seasoned. They know the sites well and are nothing short of professional and accommodating. Nelson and Osman have been doing this all their lives and it shows. The resort itself is very nice and manicured. The staff clearly pay close attention to detail. The rooms are in need of some updating though they are very clean and the grounds are absolutely gorgeous. The food presentation was wonderful. Different options every evening from Lobster and shrimp to local cuisine. Never a repeat meal for dinner. They provided good entertainment in the evening as well as informative presentations for those interested. My store travels often with anywhere from 20 to 90 people. This trip we sort of threw together last minute and traveled with about 20 and we will definitely be returning. Thank you Edman, Darren, Osman, Nelson, Melissa and all the great staff there for a relaxing and seamless week in the tropics! See you next year!
