Our family of four just returned from four nights in two Gardenia Suite rooms. Wow. The hotel is absolutely beautiful. The public rooms are all lovely, clean, in perfect condition. Our two rooms were enormous -- the bathrooms were larger than my son's bedroom in NY! The kids had two twin beds, and we had one lovely four-poster king bed. Each room had a large balcony overlooking the ocean. The balconies had 2 lounge chairs with a side table as well as a table and chairs. Very spacious. The rooms were well-appointed. There was the usual toiletries, plus bug spray (not necessary for mosquitos, since there were none -- although there were sand flies at night) and aloe vera. Sunscreen would have been nice. I didn't see it offered anywhere (unlike at another hotel we stayed at once, where they had sunscreen at the beach), although of course it was available for purchase at the gift shop. (Very expensive. We paid $26 for the spray kind -- the same bottle was less than half the price at the "Shopping Village").)The gym, tennis courts, pools, spa were all fantastic. I wish that the gym, pools and courts were open later, but the facilities were all first-rate. We borrowed racquets and balls from the gym. The gym is probably the largest hotel gym I've ever encountered, anywhere in the world. The water bottles and towels on each machine was a nice touch. We also had several services at the spa, and they were all excellent, and not as overpriced as at some resort spas. The restaurants were all fine. Definitely expensive enough that it would have made the all-inclusive rate worthwhile. I just had no idea that they would be as expensive as they were. Do try to go to The Sugar Mill, because all 4 of us really loved our meal there. The atmosphere and service alone are worth it. In fact, my 12 year old asked to go back there for dinner on our last night, but it was closed. So instead we had a very nice meal at the Italian restaurant, Il Giardino. The chef came out to talk to us, and was charming.Overall, we were delighted with our stay, and would definitely return.
We just spent an amazing four nights at the Half Moon Resort. The rooms were super comfortable, the beaches were beautiful, as was the entire property, and the food and service were fantastic. Can't wait to go back. We tried all the restaurants on site, and all were fantastic--having the Half Moon plan was an excellent idea. The only negative was having to leave to come back home....
Checked into a private villa for a 5 night stay (attending a conference).Place beautiful with a private pool, private butler, cook and cleaning lady. Hotel area is vast, so golf carts are made available to all guests. Looking closer, though, there were a few things that were offsetting. Water leaks when it rained, intermittent Internet inside the house (one would have to logon several times per hour or day, depending on the day). Very, very expensive. Breakfast buffet, albeit good for 50 USD is just too much. A drink 13 USD. Were denied entrance to dinner restaurant one night since I didn't have any shoes on. I can accept dress code, but had no idea about this dress code beforehand. Went to the beach bar to buy food and were served ice cold burgers for 19 USD each. I would probably not bring my family for a vacation here.
Wow, what a head fake. The place is a 2-3 star property at best. First let me say that there is no finer attitude for hospitality than the Jamaican people, they get it and to a person we're great. THe product is what fails. This is a tired old Caribbean resort. Long in need of major capex investment. Ill fitting windows and doors, door knobs coming loose, no A/c in the living areas, no controllers for the hvac unit in the bedroom. We ordered a grocery list, apparently lost by the concierge, then they delivered a refrigerator but failed to turn it on. So all the contents never got cold. In the guest room the toilet was a small bowl with a cheap plastic seat, a lot of space but very much like a Best Western of thirty years ago. The room had no blackout drapes. Mosquitoes were bad, but not surprising given all the standing water around. The resort was under construction on a very large part of the resort, but it was not a problem other than having to drive past it a bit. The beach is average at best, if you want great beach go to Negril. Given its age, this property needs millions more to get in the game.
My love for this resort is reflected in my Tripadvisor profile name, "Halfmooner," but know that I have no affiliation with the resort other than as a great fan and repeat guest. I was fortunate to visit the resort for 5 days last weekend. By my calculation, it was my 15th visit to the resort in the past 20 years. While I enjoy the exploration element of visiting new spots, for a beach vacation, there is nothing like returning to an old favorite where I already know the lay of the land. From the moment I arrived at the resort and was warmly greeted by Ralston at the valet desk and several old friends at the front desk, until the moment I departed, the visit exceeded all of my high expectations. The decor has been refreshed since my last visit, providing a nice tropical look. Overall, the resort is in tip-top shape, taking maximum advantage of its beautiful location. The resort is beautiful, but its greatest assets are the employees who ensure a wonderful experience for guests. While the service has always been great, it is even better than ever. This is truly the differentiating factor for Half Moon.A huge construction project is underway, but there is no evidence thereof in the main resort. I always walk the length of the property for exercise, and was only aware of the construction when walking to the far end of the property. Do not let the knowledge of construction deter you for visiting, as it is completely unobtrusive.I highly recommend Half Moon. It is simply superb. I can hardly wait to return.
