This was our second visit to Jamaica. First was a stop at Ocho Rios on a cruise. Montego Bay is a magical spot with crystal clear water and copious vegetation. The resort itself was pristine in all areas, maintained by a staff of 700! The service was impeccable. The only big negative was the food. The breakfast buffet was copious and anything desired was there for the taking. That same restaurant, the Sea Grape, served a dinner buffet as well as ala carte. Avoid the ala carte...very expensive and disappointing. The Pepper Pot Restaurant served local cuisine which was awful...jerked pork was dry and tasteless, braised oxtail all bone and dry, rum cake dry and "where's the rum". Avoid! It's only saving grace was the setting. The Italian Restaurant, Il Giardino, was quite good in an islandy setting. The Sugar Mill Restaurant was more upscale and quite good.
I loved this place for the isolated beaches away from the families who were there. It is not a party animal kinda of place, there are families and there are couples. It has a bit of Old Style English feel, the staff was really friendly. It wasn't crowded, it wasn't loud, it was relaxing. The beach front is long, as you walk away from the main beach area there are less people. I can't tell you the beaches are great for swimming in since there was a lot of seaweed. But take a book, headphones and cool music with the Caribbean Sea and get lost in conversation with the one you love. I saw members of Cheap Trick there and it was cool. They were there supporting Rock Your Speech, check out the website RockYourSpeech.com.We did the meal plan, everything is expensive. If you worry about money, go somewhere else because there are a ton of fees and you never know how to tip. It is not a cheap place but it is an awesome place.
This is a beautiful hotel on 400 acres. Our one bedroom royal suite was literally steps from the beach. The cottages on sunset beach are right on the beach, we had Lovl (beach attendant) set up our lounges early in the morning and we headed to breakfast. I will get to the food in a sec.. The Half Moon Staff is extremely accommodating and friendly. Lovl and Shashanna (beach food service) were standouts, thank you in making our stay so easy. I would have given the hotel a perfect score but the food was very disappointing. The breakfast buffet was uneventful. You would expect to get a bounty of fruits, not here!!! I had to ask everyday for papaya and the most delicious fruit , sour sot ( native to Jamaica) they had it only for 2 days out of our 6 day stay. The dinners were unexceptional. Sugar mill was great for appetizers but the meat was overlooked and flavorless. The worst was our 3 Rd night dinner at the Pepper Pot. My husband and I had the oxtail , which was delicious going in but both of us got food poisoning . We were out of commission for the next 2 nights of eating. We have never gotten sick on any of our vacations and to get sick at such a 5 star hotel was shocking. We could not eat except for pasta with butter in the evening and crackers in the afternoon. My advice, never buy the all inclusive plan . Food isn't great here!!!! The beach and room were excellent. If you want to lose weight, not eat and read a great book ... this is your place.
When I landed at MBJ, and went over to the greeting area for the Half Moon Resort (HMR), I could instantly tell that this was a finer type of service. Our ride to the resort was brief, and scenic, the resort is nestled Oceanside across from a sprawling green mountain range, entering the grounds was yet another confirmation that this was indeed a 5 star classic luxury resort, everything was plantation white and adorned with rich dark stained wood, the entrance to check-in was palatial with a grand open feel, very Caribbean. Our room was on the top floor (second) of the villa, which perched just atop the beach. The room was spacious, clean and well-kept, it was like luxury Tommy Bahama style. Of course everything was just elegant, from the smiles on the accommodating staff to the room itself, which had a take me away feeling. Our food was just spectacular. I have been to Jamaica on several occasions in the past and I stayed in a few really nice places, but what I tend to get is a watered down version of authentic Jamaican cuisine. I think because a lot of tourist prefer a milder tasting food, as well as to stay close to the food items they are familiar with, at Half Moon, they decided to come full throttle Jamaican, just on an upscale level, so you will get ackee and salt fish (spicy), you will get a rice & peas to die for, you’ll get an Escovitch fish just like you love it, with the pimento balls and scotch bonnet peppers all over it, you want green banana, or steam cabbage? All the real good stuff, however if you want to play it safe there are tons of traditional US breakfast fare, sausage & egg, pan cakes, waffles, etc. you will not be disappointed, especially if you are looking for real Jamaican dishes.I strolled the grounds and was pleased that it was pretty large with awesome views from varying places, you can have a crazy cool massage at one of the huts hanging over the ocean, or a walk down the sand, maybe a dip, in the basically private beach. I was totally satisfied with my stay here, I am planning another in August, and I’m bringing some friends, I can’t wait. The only thing I can say that I avoided whilst I stayed was the taxi service at the resort, now mind you, they aren’t unlike any other taxi service at a hotel or resort, they will upcharge you for a ride ANYWHERE, so you can avoid that by engaging in a local cabby and you can save quite a bit, ask around about a local taxi service. In conclusion, you will love this place if you are NOT into the busy, touristy all-inclusive resort places. This place host dignitaries and low key celebrities, so the relaxed no hassle vibe is not only appreciated , but encouraged. The prices are reasonable for the quality of service, and I would not only recommend this place, I believe I will be staying here many more times in the future.
If I had one more day to spend on the planet, it would be on the shores of this spectacular resort. My husband and I arrived in our mid twenties for our first stay as young newly weds almost 16 years ago, and every time we have returned (which has been around 9 times since), we have a fantastic time. Whether we come for a quick romantic get away during the winter, arrive with our children and grandparents for a special celebration in the summer, or manage to meet up with friends from various parts of the US, we are never disappointed. First of all, you are a short drive from the airport which means so much when your time is precious. From the moment the gates open, you float on to the property and are greeted by the kindest and most professional staff some of whom have been there for over 40 years. Stepping in to the timeless and elegant marble and mahogany lobby your eyes can't help but look towards the bright aqua sea in the distance- the clanging of glasses at the seaside bar and hum of music beckon you. Guests in the lobby are as diverse as the flowers- young, old, international and eclectic- there is a place for everyone here. This time around, my husband and I came down for a quick three night stay to decompress from the winter. We stayed in the hibiscus suites which we absolutely love. We were thrilled to reconnect with our friend who has been working the beach at the resort for 22 years, Mr. Omaro. You couldn't meet a kinder and gentler soul, who takes great pride in making the beach look even more lovely. The morning we left we were lucky enough to watch the staff painstakingly help hatch a new brood of sea turtles! It made the day even more magical and we were so happy to know that the resort deeply cares about the creatures that call its shores home. The Fern Tree Spa is breath taking. The facility is as gorgeous as it is incredibly tranquil with a wide selection of many treatments and the most gorgeous place to practice yoga. I got a fabulous sugar scrub massage from Nakiesha- she was an AMAZING therapist and the spa is lucky to have such an incredible technician and expert on hand. Even my greeter and hostess Karlene S. was a dream- so helpful and kind... I hopped out of the shower and was greeted by her with a delicious cup or soursop tea who's leaves grow on the premises. As usual, the food was great. Knowing that we want to totally rack out and relax makes the all inclusive (meal and beverage) best plan for us. We ordered delicious breakfasts to the room, ate fantastic fresh fish for lunch at the Sea Grape and hit the Sugar Mill for decadent steaks and Caribbean grilled lobster for dinner. Wonderful to have drink at Desmond's bar and see Mr. Solomon, the maitre d and true resort treasure...Already counting the days until we return to our home away from home!
