Our 4 days and 3 nights at Half Moon Bay this week were over the top. Sure it rained on Monday and Tuesday but we loved it. We were reading amazing books on our terrace by the beach with a clear view of the ocean. The bar was just on the other side of the bushes (room 2011) so there was that. The food was amazing. We ate at Sugar Mill, Giardino and Seagrape Terrace. The lunch buffet was one of the best I’ve ever had, well stocked with classic Jamaican dishes, my favorite being Curried Goat. Though Wednesday started with a sudden monsoon, the rest of the day was breezy and clear. We had two chairs with waves breaking literally at the feet of them where we sat, read and savored the gift bottle of Proseco from ‘management’. This is literally the first time we have ever traveled (and this was my 48th country) where we did not venture off of the property. Why? The room. This was not a normal resort room. Give us a hot plate and its move in ready. Loved the gardens, the grounds, the entire lay out. You now have a fan and a testimonial for life.
I attended a Law Conference at this hotel which was probably not the best place to have it, but for the purpose of this review I leave that to one side. Having looked forward to staying in the hotel, it did not bode well when they had me booked for two nights and not the three I had arranged. It then took nearly 20 minutes at the dedicated check-in to attempt to resolve it, which failed. I then went to the bar and waited a further 20 minutes before I was informed that I would have to change rooms after the first two days. The Villa was very nice although not all the staff seemed to be as willing as others to provide the best environment. The six bedroom villa comes with two golf carts to be used by residents. That works if the six are together but fails if they are not. We were not. All too often there was no golf cart to travel the near one mile to get to the restaurants, bars and reception. On the last night I stayed in one of the large beachfront rooms near the centre. Also very nice but sadly no water or robe and an irritating lack of power points. The two restaurants on the grounds provided what might be described as average food at best. Having ordered dinner in Seagrape at around 9:30 on the first night we were surprised to be told that since we wanted desert after 10:00 the kitchen was closed. Following a protest it was apparently now open. On the second night we were unable to get a table at the Il Giardino until 8:30 yet when we got there it was self-evident that there was a large table that had not been used all evening, confirmed by the maitre d'. The wine we wanted was unavailable, three of us ordered lamb but were not told it had run out until well after serving the starter, two of which were wrong and the whole thing took so long that we missed the entertainment that had been planned for that evening. Do not misunderstand, this was not a complete disaster. The grounds are beautiful and many of the staff wonderful people who went out of their way to welcome me.Everything was ok. But do you really want "ok" for what is billed as a top-of-the-line hotel which does not come cheap. I have stayed in many 5* hotels around the world and some in Montego Bay and this place simply does not live up to it's billing.
We just returned from our first trip to Halfmoon. We had 3 families in one villa for one week. The villa was perfect for our group. Most remarkable was the staff at our villa (Venris, Janet and Andrienne) and all the staff on the resort. They made the vacation great. Highly recommend this if traveling with a few families or a larger group.
Stayed 6 days, 5 nights at this magical property. The people make this place special. Hospitality is Half Moon's hall mark. We stayed in Cottage 4 - Room 1042 (Royal Suite) in the West Cottages. It was positioned on the beach, away from most of the beach activity, and not too far of a walk from the on-property dining options (which were all terrific). The beach is large enough for you to read and lounge in peace with beach attendants standing at the ready to take your order. The property is undergoing a massive construction project which will only add to its allure. The construction wasn't felt as the West Cottages sit quite a bit of ways from the part of property experiencing this transformation. Please consider this property at the top of your list when traveling to the Caribbean. It's true Jamaica.Things to do:Raft down the Martha Brae RiverHave dinner at Half Moon's Sugar Mill RestaurantRelax on the beach
I met my daughter, her husband and my 3 year old granddaughter at Half Moon Resort for a delightful family vacation. The casually elegant hotel, manicured grounds and amenities are spotless. The food is superb. Our 2BR Hibiscus suite was a slice of heaven with large living room, modern spacious baths, 2 balconies and glorious ocean views. But the highlight of our stay was the ever present welcoming smiles and unparalleled service from the staff! Each of them earger and earnest in their mission to make our vacation the best experience of our lives. Thank you Half Moon!
