Without a doubt Half Moon is the best resort on the island. The staff is so nice. Always asking to help. The food is super. We opted for the all inclusive meal plan and were happy we did. Make sure your party enjoys at least on meal at the Sugar Mill. It will compare with any restaurant in the States.
Half Moon is one of the nicest resorts I have ever stayed at. It is incredible. Awesome accommodations, activities, and amenities. They have a golf course, restaurants, tennis, squash, basketball, fitness. You name it. With the resort being 400 acres, they offer golf carts and bikes for a small fee to get around. On site they also offer swimming with the Dolphins, horse back riding, scuba diving, snorkeling and many other fun activities. They have outstanding food, offering multiple incredible restaurants. They have buffets for breakfast lunch and dinner as well. The food was one of the best things there. They also offer one of the nicest spas I have ever been to (The Fern Tree), it was incredible. One of the things that I will remember most about Half Moon is the people who work there. They are the most caring, kind and thoughtful people I have ever been around. Everyone is eager to help make your stay the best. Wonderful people. Also, another great thing is that the resort is 10 minutes from the airport. The resort is very secure and safe. I also went off property and never felt unsafe. Friendly people all around. Thanks Half Moon for making my stay awesome. I cannot wait to come back.
I know if you compare my review with others my score will seem harsh, and I have taken time on my return to ensure I give a considered review. The resort is undoubtedly stunning. We saw a number of resorts whilst on the island and this was the best looking by far. It has a lovely beach - the main one can be busy and there were days when the staff had to bring sun beds from other areas to cater for everyone, and most days they struggled to have enough towels. There are other beach areas which are away from the main restaurant and building, which are quieter if that's what you want. Also there are two pools slightly away from the main complex, one with a bar and the other for lap swimming. The spa is one of the nicest I have seen at a resort, lovely facilities and very tranquil, although in the outside areas, including the relaxation area and pool, you can hear the traffic from the main road. Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. There were plenty of staff, in all areas of the resort including the beach. We had a great room, a first floor suite in one of the cottages close to the main complex. It was very large with a separate dressing area and a very nice bathroom. We had a balcony and view of the beach, just 100 yds away. The only thing was that it is close to the main road which could be noisy even at night. So why am I only saying this was average? There are 3 points that affect my review.....Firstly, and a real issue for me, we were on an all inclusive package. But it is not an all inclusive hotel; people are all on different packages. This means, whereas at all inclusive you don't usually have to think about costs, signing checks or tipping, here you have to do this with everything you do. So whether it's breakfast, a coffee, a drink on the beach, a cocktail, lunch, dinner, sports..... you have to get a check and sign for it. For me, this ruins one of the reasons for going AI...forgetting about costs and payments for a week or two. Added to this is that you are expected to pay a tip for everything. I know the hotel will say it's totally discretionary and it is, but there is obviously a culture for tipping which the team are used to and so expect, so you feel obliged....it all adds up quickly, so be aware. This could all be resolved so easily by not having everyone having the same room cards that have to be checked all the time but setting up a system to make it obvious for the staff to know who is AI and not. Secondly, I am sorry to say but I found the food disappointing. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't to the standard I would expect for a resort like this. The breakfast was particularly disappointing - mostly buffet style with a waffle and omelette station but it wasn't well presented and most of the food looked unappetising unless you arrived when it opened. Lunches were a little better but mainly the standard hotel food...burgers, salads, pasta etc. Dinner was then buffet again or a la carte in one of several restaurants. We found the Italian was by far the best, both in the quality of the food and level of service. The Sugarmill is in a stunning setting, the food is spicy, the staff efficient....but not to the standard suggested by the hotel. Finally, we were disappointed with the lack of entertainment, music or whatever to just provide a good atmosphere in the evening. I know the resort advertises a casual and relaxed attitude to the evenings and I appreciate for families visiting this may be enough but for a lot, there was just not enough to help make the evenings special. They had a singer or band every night, but always very low key and finished by 10pm. I wasn't wanting to go raving or needing to spend every night partying until 2 in the morning but I also didn't really want to go to bed at 10 every night after a quiet meal. I've visited other resorts where they have managed to get the mix of relaxed but fun a lot better than here.
We stayed at the resort for 5 nights during March Break with our 7 years old son and 9 years daughter. The resort has very good kids program and service was excellent. Our room had a gorgeous view facing the ocean where we have our own private beach area. Food was expensive on resort, but very good quality. Make sure to check out the Scothies Jerk located about 5 min taxi from the resort for some authentic Wood Grilled Jerk chicken and Pork. The resort is very quite even during busy season.
We shared a garden view villa with two other families (6 adults, 6 kids ranging from 2 years to 8 years). We had an amazing time! Each villa comes with a butler (which we felt weird about, but Mr Rennis was so great!), a cook and a house keeper. We found that it was much easier to eat at the house each day (Melanie's food was AMAZING!) bc the kids could jump in the pool after. And if they were loud, who cares! Also, its much less expensive than eating at the restaurants each day- win win!Lucille cleaned the house daily and even did the laundry! The villa was very nice. The individual rooms had air conditioning (the main part of the house was not, but there's such a nice breeze it wasn't really necessary). And each bedroom has an en suite bathroom. Also, the rooms are at each corner of the house, so its very quiet (and if your kid cries in the middle of the night, no one else is disturbed). The villas come with two 6 person golf carts, which the kids loved! They spent their days swimming (at our pool, or one of several around the resort), playing at the beach or at kids camp (Anancy was pretty great- we did two 1/2 days- my kids didn't want to leave!). My older child also did the horseback riding in the ocean (which she loved!).We had such a great vacation. The kids played, the adults talked (and drank cocktails! ask the shuttle driver to stop at the liquor store on the way from the airport!)Already planning our next trip...
