Riu Montego Bay

I stayed at Hotel Riu Montego Bay from 30th November to 14th December 2017. We travelled with TUI on their Dreamliner. A long comfortable flight. The first week the weather was lovely but the second week there was heavy rain or strong winds. All hotel staff work very hard and make you feel welcome. The hotel is spotlessly clean. There was a problem with the room that we were allocated, it smelled of drains. When we complained to reception they moved us to another room. (Nothing is too much trouble.) Which was very comfortable with no problems. The mini bar in room was restocked every other day. There was a hairdryer, toiletries, and towels supplied in the bathroom. There are 4 restaurants - steakhouse, Chinese, Italian and another one that is a buffet style restaurant which serves all kinds of food. You are able to get food and drinks 24/7, when the restaurants are closed you can get food and snacks from the sports bar upstairs which is open 24/7. There is entertainment and pool activities put on by the staff during the day and shows in the evening with bingo and karaoke too. Even when the weather was bad they brought the entertainment inside. We went on a few excursions to:Dunn’s River Falls - a good trip out, this was great fun, I wasn’t sure what to expect and scared of heights, I climbed the falls with the rest of the human chain. I’d like to do this again. Ricks Cafe - this was a good evening, great atmosphere, good music, watched the cliff divers, it was overcast on the evening we went so couldn’t see the sunset ( which is supposed to be amazing) 7 mile beach Negril - this was a lovely day out, walked along the beach, nice and relaxing. Bob Marley mausoleum in Seven Mile- this was very interesting but there was a lot of waiting about for a tour guide to take you round. You can’t smoke cigarettes in there but you can smokeThis is the best all inclusive holiday I’ve ever had. I will go back and will probably stay at this hotel again. Next time will visit Rose Hall and a few other things I didn’t get to do this time.

Amazing trip

After reading all the reviews on here I was so worried about staying at this hotel however it was amazing. The staff were friendly and polite and when you arrived for check in its abit slow however they provide you with welcome drinks and take your suitcase from you so your not dragging it around. We went to all of the restaurants and the food was lovely and the jerk chicken on the beach was good. The rooms are cleaned daily and mini bar restocked every two days, in every block you have ice machines where you can fill up your buckets in your room for drinks. The beach was lovely and chilled and you do get abit of sea weed on the beach but it's the stormy season. We paid 40 dollars for a weeks worth of WiFi in our room and the signal was excellent we didn't have any trouble. The entertainment team were brilliant. The pool is a great place to chill and get your refreshments. We played tennis every day and would put a 20 dollar disposit down for the day for the tennis balls and rackets, then when you return the balls and rackets they would give you your 20dollars back. I would definitely recommend this place we are going to book it again for the end of the year.

I'd come back

All- inclusive.Traveled here for my wife's birthday last year for a week long stay. This is not a five star resort but if you aren't expecting a five start resort I think you won't be disappointed. Shows are fun, the entertainment team seem very passionate.Food was very good. No room service though. Plenty of restaurants. Almost everything is buffet style and no real cook to order places worth visiting. Activities consist of the non motorized water sports, beach games, pool party type of activities, etc. For a fee you could do sunset catamaran cruises, scuba, and snorkeling. We did the snorkeling and it was a great time. We've been snorkeling all around the Caribbean and this was on par or superior to other locales. Beach was not the greatest but it was still very nice. Water was blue but cloudy. Lots of beach vendors because there is no such thing as a private beach in Jamaica. Vendors are selling "beads and shells" but really they are selling drugs. If that's your thing then there is plenty of that everywhere. Apparently everyone in Jamaica sells drugs. Not our thing so we spent a lot of time saying no.Besides the rum, the alcohol available to you is horrible. The rum is Appleton and it is good. You don't even have the option to purchase premium liquors. All alcohol is an off brand and doesn't taste right. Whiskey doesn't taste like whiskey etc. Beer is red stripe. In the U.S.A. red stripe doesn't taste great. Here it tastes fantastic. There are full sized alcohol bottles in the rooms instead of mini bar sized bottles. That was great but the booze was so bad it didn't matter. We were very disappointed in the quality of the alcohol and spent a lot of time drinking the rum due to the poor quality of the other alcohol. Would be much better if they offered the option to pay for a premium alternative. No elevators. All rooms not on the first floor will require a walk up the stairs. Lots of walking.Pool is awesome. Huge. Swim up bar. Impossible for this pool to be full. Closes later in the evening when dinner is being served and the shows start. We really alternated between the beach and the pool and were loungers, watched all the shows, and snorkeled a little bit. One day we left the resort for a half day to souvenir shop and sight see. We paid a rastafari driver to take us "where tourists don't typically ask to go". I'm not sure I would suggest this to anyone but I am glad we did it. We saw downtown Montego Bay welfare lines (off season travel), a church that is still operating and that is older than the USA, the Dewars Mansion, and a whole lot of jungle that started to seem fairly ominous as the sun began setting. We stopped about an hour and a half into the jungle at a road side lean to and had a vegetarian dish and some coconut water from a coconut. Kids and people were stopping and staring at the white people... Would not suggest leaving the hotel without a guide or wandering around at night here. Maybe if I were younger and less faint of heart. There is a sister property, RIU Palace, that has access to the RIU but it does not work the other way around. When we arrived some of the people we rode from the airport with dropped off there. It looked much more contemporary and I remember that they were having a marijuana convention... Rooms are very basic and dated... but we didn't come here to spend time in the rooms. Internet access is only available in the lobby.Property is surrounded by a very, very tall wall... Security patrol will eventually chase drug dealers off of the beach if they try to come too far inland... but I also got the feeling that there was some kind of arrangement there...Overall we enjoyed this property but, again, our expectations weren't very high. I saw folks with kids. I wouldn't bring your kids. Lots of Canadians and British. Frankly, we didn't run into many Americans except, perhaps, those that had the cruise ship day pass...
