Please DEMAND a new room or key if the key doesn't work. I was given a really hard time with no exchange of key nor room. Made my 3 night stay very unpleasant. I do plan to return. Overall the resort gets a thumbs up. But the assistance I received per my NUMEROUS key complaints? It angered me. Wish I had been more persistent but being in another country I was afraid of consequences had I gone ' mad' which is exactly how customer service was forcing me to resort to doing
Family of 5 - 2 adults and kids 16, 17 & 20We had fun! Great location, beach, gardens, pool and events....Husband and I splashed out on a suite (block 6), overlooking the beach, ocean and fabulous sunsets. It came complete with extra large bed (enough to actually fit all 5 of us in, I think. I had to check if husband was still in the bed some mornings) enormous bathroom, with jacuzzi bath and balcony overlooking beach. The rooms were immaculate, yes some of the furniture is not brand spanking new but it was in an excellent condition, I was completely happy with the room, beautifully cleaned every day (Thank you)Kids had a 3 bed / bedroom - room was a great size and in another block. Clean, (sorry and bless that maid, who tried to clean it). I visited some days and asked my kids was it even possible for them to even try and use the wardrobes provided to hang their clothes up!Pool and bars were great, food was absolutely fabulous with plenty of choice for all, no trouble finding tables. Breakfast from 7am and dinner 6:30 - 10pm so plenty of time to get food, staff fabulous!The entertainment team are absolutely brilliant - we loved them, funny, interacted with guests (would come and play ping pong with kids and chat to them). Great games, jokes and evening entertainment, (I think my daughter secretly fell in love with all the chaps) beach party was great and reggae night was fun.The staff are truly what gives this hotel the edge and I hope RIU appreciate and recognise this they are al a credit to themselves - they are brilliant, friendly, so helpful and deserve every tip you give them and more (please remember to do that - they work so very hard).Free Wifi available in public areas, this was sufficient for kids I chose not to bother with the buy room wifi, and didn't even bother logging into the free wifi and world for the whole week, didn't need to as I enjoyed my time there without seeing what the rest of the world was doing.Trips:We had a snorkelling trip from the Scuba Caribe catamaran one day - it was a two site snorkelling trip, and amazing at that.We also did 3 trips from JTL - they can be bought from rep in the hotel lobby.1. Ziplining and tubing (crazy fun)2. Luminous Lagoon. (a must)3. Chukka Catamaran Dunn's River Cruise. (fun)Holiday was such fun - now I am home, I am definitely feeling the post holiday blues (missing the place)Try it you will love it.
We have just returned from Riu Montego Bay. Thomson have recently downgraded the hotel to a four star and it shows. There are cost cutting signs everywhere.Rooms - desperate need of updating. They are dated and dark. We moved rooms due to a damp issue which is often reported on here. The bedspread reminds me of a prison and does not match the furnishings. The lovely towel animals left as a special touch by the maid loses something when done in a coffee coloured towel. There are no decent toiletries supplied, a couple of tiny squares of soap and a shower gel dispenser on the wall. The room key is an actual key, with a fob showing the room number, this is a massive security risk. However, the in room optics and stocked mini bar are great touches and our room was kept clean. We had an issue with parties in the room next door. How rude of other guests to think it acceptable to party until 3am with lots of people and loud music when there is a nightclub on site!Restaurants - the food is really good, the buffet has plenty of choice with great service. The Speciality restaurants, Asian, Italian and Steakhouse operate on a first come first served basis. However, if the restaurant is at its maximum (less than it can actually hold) you have to wait. We didn't have a problem and the longest we waited was 20 minutes. Two things spoil the restaurants they are "half al la carte" meaning, you help yourself and they do not enforce the dress code. The steakhouse is full waiter service, but there is a set starter. The Italian serves the main course to the table only and the Asian is all self service. This feels like cost cutting and why this hotel is no longer a 5 star. If the dress code was adhered to, there would be no need to queue as half of the guests would not be admitted! The food was good in all reastaurants, the Italian was our favourite. The bar service at all bars is second to none, the staff are extremely friendly and it was never a problem to mix a cocktail that wasn't on the menu. The pool area and grounds are well kept, there was a gardener working every day. The pool is cleaned everyday, we didn't find it dirty like others have said. All public areas are clean, there was always someone cleaning up.The beach is poor compared to other Caribbean beaches. There are traders but a polite no thank you stops them hassling you. The entertainment staff are amazing, they work all day and put on a show at night. They are very talented and always happy and friendly. This hotel seems to be a little lack lustre, it needs a refit. There are rules which are not enforced. We saw people smoking on their balcony, although the designated areas were always being used too. The restaurants could be that little more "special" which you expect from a 5 star if they were true al la carte and stuck to the dress code.Overall, this wasn't the same experience we enjoyed at the Riu Tropical in Negril, some years ago, the reason we chose another Riu. The people make this hotel, they truly are wonderful, friendly, happy people. I'm sad to say, I don't think we woukd consider returning, we expect 5 star when paying 5 star money.
Can I start off by saying thank you so much Riu Montego Bay for making our first time in Jamaica one to remember. From start to finish was amazing. Check in was quick, although we had to wait a while for our bags to be delivered to our room. Rooms were lovely and spacious. Yes I agree abit dated, and the bed was very hard but this didn't spoil our experience in any way. Nice touch with the optics in the room which were refilled every 2 days along with a selections of soft drinks and water. Free safe was available which you must use. Any spare change left on the side will be taken by the maid, assuming its a tip. We did tip our maid a few times as she done a great job. The pools were great. Although the bar pool was very cloudy due to people spilling drinks/ peeing in the water. We stayed in the larger pool which was a lot cleaner. Music was played around the pool from about 10am. I don't quite understand other reviews moaning about the Reggae music being played, erm you're in JAMAICA! I wasn't too keen on the beach. A lot of mess left behind by guests who can't be bother to clean up after themselves. The food was lovely. As mentioned in most other reviews, the jerk chicken hut on the beach was the best. Always a long queue but totally worth it. The buffet hall had a wide selection of food. But like most all inclusive holiday, it gets abit repetitive after 14 days. We are smokers and the restriction on smoking didn't bother us at all. We had a smoking area outside out block (block 4) also one on the beach, one near reception and one near the entertainment area. The entertainment team were fantastic. they work tirelessly day and night. Our favorite was the beach party on a Tuesday. Once the entertainment has finished in the evening you can carry on the party in the night club next to the stage. It's pretty small but was good fun. Thanks to Errol and O'Brian at the bar, tops guys. We done a few excursions while here. I'd advise to book at them at the hotel. A few people we spoke to who booked though Thomson at home had problems with pick ups etc.. and its cheaper booking at the hotel. I would agree this is not a 5 star resort, however this wouldn't stop me from coming back again.Thank you Rui Montego Bay.
I was so looking forward to this holiday. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice hotel, nice pool but all very nice and very average. I don't believe it was worth the money or the stars it has been given. The food has flies on it a lot of time which I know you cant help but still GROSS! Also at breakfast, birds would come and pester you and try and steal your food which would leave me running from the table screaming a lot of the time! I didn't go to the entertainment once and didn't love the overall experience. I would book somewhere else if you see this review.
