Definitely not perfect. Food was ok, rooms stunk so bad, but that's cuz of the humidity, service was great, although at the pool there were no servers so you had to get your own drinks at the bar. Smoking only allowed in a smoking area which a bummer when you want a drink šŸ¹ at the pool with a cig. Beach was ok not perfect. Over all was decent for a little getaway I stayed 5 days 4 nights.

Ok resort..

We came here as a group in November and it was ok. The rooms are nice but there was construction going on so it was loud some mornings. Some of the staff were nice but others seemed like they couldn't be bothered- especially some of the bartenders. The food was ok but nothing super impressive. I don't think we'll be visiting this resort again but it is nice if you're looking for something on a budget.

Not worth the second chance--DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!

I traveled to the Riu in Montego Jamaica from 9/13/17 - 9/16/17-Upon check in I remarked that I recently traveled to Carbo San Lucus and stayed at the Riu palace and what a bad experience I had. We this was much of the same. My initial room smelled like someone had left trash in the room for days and closed the windows. When I walked into the room the smell took my breath away. After speaking with the front desk I was assigned a new room. The bed in the room was like sleeping on the floor and the "sheet" was a curtain used as a sheet.Food-it was the same food EVERY day. It would have been better if there was a variety of choices. The food in the 24-hours bar was old-it looked like the food had been left there for a day or so.The WI-FI did not work in the rooms nor did it work outside the room. I had to make several trips to the front desk to get help with logging in.The pool was dirty. There was a film floating in the surface of the water. There was a lot of sand on the bottom of the pool. There were tiles missing for the sides of the pool. None of the jets worked in the whirlpools.There were cats roaming all over the resorts. There were in the eating areas as well as the pool areas. One of the cats drank out of my cup, EWW.For the last 2 days of my trip I had to shower in cold water because for some reason there was no hot water on the resort.These were the worst vacations I've EVER taken. I really regret that we chose to stay here.

Very disappointing

For the first time ever my sister and I decided to return to Riu Montego Bay following our trip in July 2016 when we had such a great time. Whilst we were fully prepared that it would be a different experience, we had not anticipated such a decline in services. We have just returned having spent 14 nights, each in our own rooms, so quite expensive for which we saved hard all year. The most noticeable and disappointing difference was the severe lack of banter, rapport and fun from the entertainment staff. This is not any criticism of the hard working staff themselves, there were just a lot less of them. Last year and indeed on another Riu holiday to Cancun, we left in awe of the entertainment staff and how we felt they seemed to know us personally, they made the holiday and gave us the Riu experience. We heard from other guests that a lot of the good staff were ferried off to the new hotel, Riu Reggae. Indeed, 2 friends we met who were staying there described the day time live reggae bands and all the fun with the entertainment staff. So we did not have any sense of this, we could have been staying in any hotel anywhere. In so saying, it was good to have a few chats with Needle, FIA and Spice. Customer service came round in the first week and asked for any recommendations, we mentioned the lack of entertainment staff but really a waste of time as nothing changed. Countless reviews on trip advisor mention the damp and musty smell in the rooms. It was so bad in ours that we had to hang clothes on the balcony or we literally stank! There was black mould in the bathroom. With so many complaints about the smell, it is noticeable that management simply do not respond. There was a beauty pageant with lots of bikini clad teenage girls posing, sometimes suggestively, for photos. They took over the hotel, cut into the entertainment, and were given preferential treatment in the bar and restaurant. It was like going back in time! Had we been informed of this type of event by Thomson, we would have booked a different time to stay there. For me personally, a hard working woman with strong feminist views, it was just AWFUL. This is not a 5 star hotel. We would not go back and in fact would not use a Riu again despite having stayed with them many times before in Europe and the Caribbean. We made the most of the sun and enjoyed the food, however, the overall experience, given the cost, was at best mediocre.

After our cruise was cancelled from Irma we came here last minute

We are here now 9/17. I think you have to understand what you are paying for. And what you are use to. It's not 5 star but it's fine. I'm from the USA and mostly cruise for vacations so to us it's different. No one waits on you at the pools and bars but they do in restaurants. The rooms are "damp" smelling due to humidity but I saw no evidence of mold anywhere. Bring air freshener, The food is ok but not a large variety of choices. Pick something you love and don't try everything. The staff is friendly. The pools are clean, but like me any resort that goes 24/7 there is probably little time to do tile repair. I don't have anything else like it to compare to except other island resorts for a day stays and the Riu exceeds most of those. So come and don't set the bar super high. It's average with a nice staff. Low key, lay around relax kinda place.
