We stayed 18 nights in the Riu Palace Montego Bay and consequently we have a good idea of the strong and less strong points of the hotel. Generally, in all aspects, the standards of total quality, food, drinks, service, kindness of the staff, swimmingpools, bars, restaurants, cleanliness, watersportsteam, animationteam, gardens, chairs and lounges etc... are very, very high. The expections from the clients are accordingly even high. The points were the expections were not reached are the reservation system for the restaurants (e.g. waiting time of more than 50 minutes for the Steak House in a unpleasant dark space, worse than an old european trainstation) and the towelservice in the room rather irregular. A special thank you to the watersportsteam in the hotel. Conclusion : book this hotel and you will be totally happy.
So we arrived to a great reception area. Check-in was fairly quick, and we had no line. however should you find yourself in a line there is a bar 100 yards behind you. the staff was friendly and welcoming. we stayed on the east side of the property. which had great view (in my opinion) we opened up the patio to the rain forest. as i understand it the West side of the property over looks the other resort. but moving on.... We spent the majority of our free time in the pool. Duh. we prefered the main one just past the main stage. the bartenders there were nice, including one that goes by Bond, James Bond (not kidding). he was hilarious and a lot of fun. it is an all inclusive resort i know, but tipping goes a long way. lets see what else. the restaurants are pretty good, if you get a bottle of wine it is extra (not included). food is good, but all inclusive, so level set your expectations. we did one excursion it was the catamaran that you can book right by the breakfast spot. so much fun. also the grill shack on the beach is the best place for lunch. i guess all in all, we had a lot of fun, great location, i recommend it. oh last note: don't sit on the beach by the activity pool, it will flood out when ever there is an aerobics class.
Feb 13 - Feb 20, 2017The service was superior. We did have minor issues with our room such as a dresser drawer that was jammed and lights that were blown.. Solution bring it to the attention of staff. Our issues were dealt with immediately... A respectful maintenance man solved our issues ... thank you Christopher. The entertainment staff, restaurant staff and the bartenders were great! (It is your choice to tip.... not a requirement)I found the food very good to excellent depending ... the buffet is huge and I did not try everything lol... but what I did have is rated accordingly. The jerk chicken on the beach at lunch was one of my faves... as was the lobster and crab on Saturday supper at the main buffet. Loved the goat curry also! The buffet is obviously meant to appease many different palates and I think they do a good job in that aspect along with introducing some authentic Jamaican dishes to try out.The only issues that I can see:1) Taxi service to some popular spots in Mo Bay are a bit pricy (Pier 1 bar, Hip Street, etc.) No shuttles(at least that I'm aware of) about $40-50 US return. 2) Beach is relatively small compared to a place like Negril... lol... no mile long walks or runs on the beach. But if you're ok with that then the beach is good... you can do the excursion to Negril for the day which is nice. All in all a lovely experience ... and mainly thanks to the staff of RIU Mo Bay and the Jamaican sun.RIU Montego Bay is a resort I would consider going to again... I have read some write-ups on here that surprise me! Was I in the same hotel as the same time as these reviewers? We were really impressed.Checkin was fast and easy. Our room was very well appointed, our only issue was that our mini bar was not stocked until we called reception. However, when we called it was swiftly fixed.Pool area was very good, ample sun beds. Our only moan was inconsiderate smokers ignoring the no smoking around the pool rule and staff not dealing with that. Grounds were well maintained and clean.Pool bars seemed well stocked and service was good. The jerk shack on the beach was exceptionally good and we used that for lunch most days. The breakfast and lunch buffet restaurant was great. Well stocked good selection of food stuffs all well cooked. The speciality restaurants were a bit of a strange set up. We had to queue outside for 30 minutes prior to being admitted as no booking system operated. When in, though, the steak restaurant was fine, the Asian OK and the Italian was good. There is a wellness centre and gym on site...the heat in the gym was not reduced by ineffectual ceiling fans, other than that all good. What really made our holiday was how polite the staff were, especially a lady called Cryshelle who always made us welcome at dinner and, without request, re-filled our glasses etc...little touches that made such a difference. We will definitely return...we have holidayed in all inclusive hotels all over Europe, all purporting to be high standard. Nothing got close to this.Well done all and thanks.
Rooms are mediocre-could use updating. Signed up for a king size bed and received two full size beds pushed together-may have been welded b/c we didn't fall thru them! Only amenity in room was the shampoo in a dispenser and shower cap. No lotion, conditioner, pen, or paper. Liquor dispensers, beer, water and soft drinks in mini fridge. Curtains old and some very worn with holes in them.Food-This might be the best all-inclusive food I have had and have been to many AI resorts.Pool-several missing tiles that need to be replaced but beautiful.Sports and Entertainment-great staff (loved Freddy & Mystic!) and the shows at night were really good.
