Our Opinion

With its great location, less than 10 minutes from the airport, you can start your vacation right away. Along with its modern decor, Riu Palace Jamaica has a friendly and attentive staff and delicious dining options as is expected with the Riu chain. There is a selection of activities and entertainment offered at the resort but for the most part, this adults only resort is considered a more of a quiet retreat. And with a private, white-sand beach there are no beach vendors or timeshare sales people. If you are looking for more action, take advantage of the full exchange privileges at the Riu Montego Bay right next door.

Great Vacation

Riu Palace is a fantastic hotel. It is geared towards a 40+ crowd, all inclusive, no children allowed. My bestie and I (in our forties) spent the weekend at RIU to celebrate my birthday. Each morning, the buffet breakfast was delicious and full of great choices. The jerk hut opened around noon. It was equally delicious although we only visited it once because by noon we had already left the resort for outside activities. We also missed the afternoon pool and beachside activities. Since it was just a weekend trip we wanted to enjoy as much of the local Jamaica as we could during the day. If our stay was longer, we would have enjoyed the water volleyball, mid day dance parties by the pool, ping pong, and other afternoon activities. At night, we enjoyed the nightlife activities, shows, the club, and the drinks, offered at the sister resorts, Riu Montego Bay and RIU Reggae. Some of the excursions we squeezed into the mix included the catamaran cruise, snorkeling, haunted plantation tour, margaritaville, and horseback riding. Also all three RIU resorts are right next to each other - you can walk. Never made it to the casino but neither of us gamble so not a big deal. If you stay at the RIU Palace you are given full privileges to everything offered at all three resorts for free. If you stay at RIU Reggae or RIU Montego Bay, you are not. The palace is great because after enjoying everything the other RIU resorts had to offer you can still enjoy the quieter atmosphere of RIU Palace when you return from the other two. The accommodations were also impressive. The rooms were clean, spacious, and modern. Nice soaking tub and a shower big enough to sing and dance in while you wash the sand away. The fridge was fully stocked with alcohol, water, soda, and juices. There was also an alcohol dispenser on the wall in your room for those who really like to indulge. The room includes a small living room area (sofa, table, chairs, tv) but I only used the room for sleeping. All rooms have a private patio/balcony and some offered ocean front views. The beach water was warm and beautiful. The sand was a little rocky by the shore, but no worries. Paddle boats, kayaks, you name it, - all offered on the RIU Reggae side of the beach. Never had to fight for a seat or a towel. Massages are done right on the beach. You also have the option of a private massage if you choose. The entire hotel staff was fantastic. Not only were they friendly, they were extremely attentive. All in all a great way to celebrate a birthday. I wish we could have stayed longer.

50th bday at The Riu Sept. 2017

Awesome good time! Of course nothing is perfect for all guest so here it goes. The family hotel was where we stayed and it definitely needs updating, we had real metal keys!! The room bathrooms needed some type of ventilation as it was always hot and steamy with no relief after a shower. There is one place, the sports bar, to eat during partying times after 11:30pm. This would be ok if hot foods were served. It would definitely increase the quality of the stay if we could get a burger or something when we are done partying at the club or after one of the very good shows in the eve. It was nachos and cold tuna sandwiches. Drinks were best at the lobby bar ..Rita Marleyzzz..YAAASSS were the best! I always opted for tequila instead of the rum. The sports bar machine was not working properly and therefore the frozen drinks were watery. All other drinks were very delicious. The bartenders were great, I saw no difference in if I tipped or not.. same great service. The food was very good. I needed more heat but it was the rainy season at the end of Sept 2017, so a little washed out. There was very little rain..maybe twice during our week stay and only for about an hr.At breakfast there were not a lot of meat options if you were not a pork eater. The selection of foods and omelets were great!!The spa was excellent. One of the best full body massages I ever had. Magical experience. Watch for the extra charges. They will not definitely suggest a product before you leave to get those few extra $$.The worst part was the part of the swimming pool closed for repairs due to possible someone getting hurt. It was the swim up bar portion!! Guest had no warning and it was closed for the last 3 days of our week long stay...AAAAGGHHH!!! That was the best part of the benefits at the Riu.. It was obviously long overdue and appeared to be a very lengthy process. Therefore I would definitely go again but to the more modern Adults only Riu. If I had children it would definitely e this one. The performers were very entertaining, I loved the dancers. They were off the chains. The pool activity staff had mad skills and kept us partying!!! Enjoy

Great vacation

We did a five day vacation, what made our stay at the Riu enjoyable was the excellent staff, special mention to Sophie the house keeping supervisor and Ricardo at the front desk. We booked last minute for our 25 th anniversary. We informed sunwing at booking, when we got to front desk at check in we asked if there were any perks for ones celebrating their anniversary? The answer was yes but you need proof! We did not bring proof, their response was that's too bad no free upgrade. Our vacation did not get off to a good start, my husband was not happy! We asked at front desk why we did not get itinerary on bus? The lady at the front desk called Sunwing. While on the phone to Sunwing I asked asked why they never told us we needed to bring proof of wedding certificate. Never really got a solution from Sunwing, but we had not realized Ricardo (supervisor at the front desk) was listening to the conversation. One hour later we received a call in the room from Ricardo he said he had 2 other rooms for us to look at, it wasn't beach front but sure was a lot better than rooftop view. Sophie came to make up the new room while we're in it. Her positive attitude put us in a great mood, she said tomorrow will be better day. It was nice to be able to communicate and joke with the whole staff since they all spoke English. All the staff were so pleasant and helpful. They always greeted us. The restaurants were small but service was top notch. Staff were always cleaning.Beach was a bit small for husband ( he likes walking the beach a couple hours each way , not here. No seaweed water warm at beach and pools. It was an awesome vacation and we would definitely go back.

Fantastic stay

First, thanks to all who have posted reviews. They were very helpful to read in advance of our stay at the Riu Palace Jamaica last week. A couple of clarifications -- room service menu is definitely limited, but you can get a full breakfast through room service if you call after 7:00 am. I had made-to-order omelets every day with anything else you want delivered that is available on the breakfast buffet including carafes of coffee. Also, dinner buffet one night included lobster and I had a few! I also enjoyed the filet mignon and lobster at the Steak House. There are 3 public restrooms on the resort: lobby + near Hanover Pool Bar + near Lime Pool Bar. Everything is so close and I absolutely loved that about this resort. It is so easy to walk from your room to Vogue Bar in lobby or to the Aqua Bar, or to the ocean, or to any of the 3 pools, or to any of the restaurants. The walk to the sister properties on either side is also very close and worth a visit for a drink or show or casino or swim or jerk chicken.... so many options when you stay at the Palace. HOWEVER, as many have reported, the Palace was mostly older couples (myself included) so it you're single and ready to mingle, you might consider accommodations at the Riu Reggae instead which is also adult-only. We celebrated our 25th anniversary and because we brought our marriage certificate, were upgraded to an Oceanfront Jacuzzi Suite (we had booked an Oceanfront Jr Suite). Would love to return!
