Riu Palace Jamaica

With its great location, less than 10 minutes from the airport, you can start your vacation right away. Along with its modern decor, Riu Palace Jamaica has a friendly and attentive staff and delicious dining options as is expected with the Riu chain. There is a selection of activities and entertainment offered at the resort but for the most part, this adults only resort is considered a more of a quiet retreat. And with a private, white-sand beach there are no beach vendors or timeshare sales people. If you are looking for more action, take advantage of the full exchange privileges at the Riu Montego Bay right next door.
I have travelled to the Caribbean over 30 times and stayed at all sorts of hotels including 4 other Riu's and even Sandals and this is one of the best. The management of this place is top notch my hat off to them. This is the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in anywhere. I can't say enough about the staff nothing is to much and they're always smiling and super friendly. The food is excellent from the buffet to all the speciality restaurants. My favourite was the Italian one but they're all great. If your thinking of going than GO this is a great choice. For added fun there is a great casino across the street from the resort that was a blast.
We have stayed at many Riu hotels over the last few years (including various Riu Palaces). The Riu Palace Jamaica is the best, in my opinion. The decor is (unashamedly) modern and "purple". I do much prefer it to the "old style" Riu Palaces, like the Maspalomas (Gran Canaria) and Las Americas (Cancun). The beach may not be as long as, for example, at the Riu Palace Bavaro in the Dominican Republic, (another excellent hotel but just not as good as the Palace Jamaica) but the sand is lovely...and certainly the nicest of the three hotels in the vicinity. The entertainment team was shared with the next door Riu Reggae. They were all great, like in the vast majority of Riu hotels we have visited. They are engaging, not overly "in your face" and all very talented. They know that if their standards slip that there is a long line of people willing to take their place and they are always excellent. They did pool area games at 11-12 and 3-5 (ish)...as well was the evening entertainment. All great fun. If you wanted some quiet and some time away from the (thankfully non-crazy) music at the pool, then there were always an absolute abundance of chairs available on the beach..I can only say that the food was excellent, especially in the buffet. We were there for two weeks, and we only once went to one of the Speciality restaurants...Krystal, where most of the food was excellent, but the chocolate dessert was, unfortunately, not good. That was literally the only food issue we had the whole time we were there. A quick mention of the jerk chicken man at lunch: he was hilarious, there was no queue, and the food was fantastic. In terms of drinks, the spirits were top shelf, branded. (I only wish they did diet tonic). The wine was..well, ok...slightly better in Krystal. Champagne was cava, as you should expect..Every day or so they had lunch available on the beach...top quality paella or tacos...excellent. There was a 24-hour food/drink area at the beach, just across from the main dining area. Food wasn't up to the normal level of the buffet, but it was 24-hour so would have sufficed for the desperate..! This bar (called Aqua I think) was where the nightly entertainment was also held. Lower key than normal large Riu hotel nightly entertainment, but this was again, excellent. If you wanted the full-on show experience, you only have to go next door (and it really IS next door) to the Riu Reggae. (A quick shout-out for the Michael Jackson show...really FANTASTIC). I thought this was an excellent combination. You're not always in the mood for a full show..Coming on to the rooms, many have commented on the "bath in the room". Well, we have had this type of layout in the last 3 Riu hotels we have stayed at, and I far prefer it. But, yes, you need to be a couple really..Air conditioning: excellent throughout the hotel. Smoking: this is what I LOVED. As a (relatively rabid) non-smoker, I loved the fact that smoking was only allowed outside the front of the hotel and also in one small area at the far end of the beach. (Government regulation apparently). Management: never an easy job, but I think Riu hotels have it about right. The managers are always around, making sure standards are kept high, while at the same time being very available to guests. They never act as if they are in a rush; they always listen to any queries or complaints, and act on them. A big thank you to Manuel Cano..!The hotel, is always being cleaned, and is always clean. All the staff couldn't be more helpful. The grounds are always kept well. The other two hotels in the vicinity:The Riu Montego Bay is a family hotel. It is the oldest of the three hotels and certainly looks it. It does have the only nightclub of the three hotels but (a) it's not too busy and (b) like the rest of the hotel the drinks aren't "top shelf". The food looks ok, but not as good as the Reggae (although pretty close) and certainly not as good as the Palace. The beach at the Montego Bay is the longest of the three, and the (huge) pool scene is very nice..but just not as nice as the other two. It is the cheapest hotel, and should be. The Riu Reggae is more expensive, is adult only and offers a number of premium drinks brands. The food is pretty good, but when we were there it was only shortly after it had opened and quite a lot of the food ran out quickly, before being replenished later. The Reggae has a younger (adult) crowd and lively atmosphere. Fun atmosphere but too loud for us. The jerk chicken hut was open every day at 12. Food was great, although you might have to queue for 10 minutes. Staying at the Palace (also adult only) meant that you could use all the facilities of the other two hotels. The Palace was the most expensive, but if you can afford it, and you're not going for loud reggae all day and a crazy pool scene, then the Palace is definitely the one for you. Enjoy it..!!
Overall the Hotel is beautiful and modern, the staff are really friendly and hospitable. Big up to Steve our waiter and DJ Spaghetti. The room is beautiful, modern and the jaquizzi tub was my favorite. Great maid service who cleaned our rooms upon request sometimes twice a day turn down service. We arrived early in the morning and enjoyed the property RIU Reggae (very beautiful and modern as well) food was great and staff very friendly. At check-in time we were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary free upgrade!!! Thank you Mr Sondern, you've been the best and I can see why your properties are such a success...
We loved our visit and will be back again next year! The staff, accommodations, entertainment and food was excellent. We recommend staying 10 days since 7 was too short. The jerk hut at the RIU Reggie was delicious!
We just got back from a week at the RIU Palace Tropical and are quite disappointed with management's treatment of guests. We have previously stayed at other RIU properties and have had a great experience. Building number 5 is having some sewage problems which are making a good deal of the rooms smell. When we checked in we were moved into three different rooms before we got one that only mildly smelled of mildew and must. The first two rooms smelled of raw sewage. We had booked an Ocean View Room and after the first two rooms they downgraded us into a Garden View room. We have a 6 month old and they wanted to move us again 2 days later to make up for the downgrade. We couldn't upset the baby's routine any more by moving again. Management was unwilling to credit us for our downgrade and wanted us to sign a form stating that we were taking a voluntary downgrade which we refused to do. Management really doesn't understand how customer service is supposed to work. This is also a fraudulent practice since we paid for a particular item and were not reimbursed for the portion of the downgrade. I highly advise that people stay away from this hotel. The property itself also needs an update. The entire place needs a paint job. There are tiles that are falling off in many places in the pools and the exteriors of the buildings. The one good thing that this property has going for it is that the food and beverage staff does go up and above to make sure everything is to your liking. The wait staff really do try and get to know you and are extremely friendly.I do about 125 nights per year on hotels and this was one of the most unsatisfactory experiences I have had in the last 10 years.
