Our Opinion

Secrets St. James is a great resort destination for anyone wanting luxurious and top-notch service. With great food options, quality drinks, gorgeous beaches and a plethora of activities within reach, the Secrets St. James is a prime all-inclusive resort for couples and adults wanting a quieter and relaxing getaway.

With a stunning location on a private, sugar-white sand beach, Secrets St. James presents guests with a quiet, relaxing, oceanfront destination. The resort's classic furniture and modern fabrics echo this modern take on the sophistication of the Victorian era. Should a guest want to kick up the excitement a notch, there's Secrets Wild Orchid next door, with it's welcoming Jamaican vibe. The best of two worlds.

Location: Beachfront, 35 minutes from Montego Bay Airport.

Just got back last night. Stayed for seven days. This place truly is paradise. You would really have to nitpick to find something negative about this place. We stayed in the Preferred Club section of Secrets St. James. There was never any issue with finding a spot on the beach or at the pool. Both were nice and peaceful. We were never long without a beverage, as staff was always around, inquiring as to our beverage of choice. The pool and beach were both quiet. The room was nice and spacious(Junior suite), with an ocean view. The food was what one expects from an all-inclusive, ranging from good to great. In regards to the restaurant dinner dress code, I got by just fine with shorts, a polo shirt and sneakers, while my wife got by with shorts, a (nice) t-shirt, and sandals. The only place where they really are strict is the French restaurant, at which we did not dine. Our favorite was El Patio(the Mexican). While tipping is not mandatory, I do recommend it. A dollar per drink, and a few at dinner go a long way. Finally, a shout out to "Super" Brithney, who helped us plan our romantic dinner on the beach(for our 20th anniversary), and Ernell, the best bartender in town!

My husband and I have never been to Jamaica and to be honest never planned on it. We had no idea what to expect when coming to this island. But after this visit, we will be back. This vacation was one of the most fun, relaxed and enjoyable we have experienced. And the reason is because of the people on this resort. The Jamaicans are very happy, friendly and made us feel like royalty. The employees at this resort MADE our vacation. To see people working their butts off AND being happy about it is rare. Dehalo at the swim up pool bar NEVER left us empty handed when it came to our drinks. He is REALLY good at his job and a very hard worker. At one point we were out of his reach, and he saw our drinks were empty, so he actually sent someone to swim over to us to refill our drinks. THE MAN!!!! Dehalo is a very good bartender, knows how to make drinks the right way. Some all inclusives you go to , the drinks are water downed , not much alcohol, but not at this resort. Another worker we got to know was Leo. What a hard worker he is. And he was ALWAYS smiling, laughing, putting you in a good mood. Leo makes sure EVERYONE around him is in as good of a mood as he is in!! A hard worker, GREAT ATTITUDE and was so positive!! I would see Leo working the swim up bar during the day, then at night at the piano bar working and still had a huge smile on his face. Ive never seen someone enjoy their job so much and have that much energy. What a guy!! Housekeeping is a little slow, I had to ask them many times for extra towels. The views are beautiful at this resort. The beach is so gorgeous and the sunset is so pretty. Very positive thing was this beach is private. All the servers at the restaurants were so nice. The servers around the pool were always checking to make sure you were doing well. There are MANY chairs at the beach. The pool a little more crowded and sometimes hard to find chairs. Each morning we couldn't wait to get to the swim up bar and start drinking! There is a spa which I do feel is way overpriced.'s a very nice experience. They have you arrive an hour early to enjoy the sauna, steam room and jet tubs. Everyone in there were so nice. We were very much pleasantly surprised about Jamaica. And there is no doubt we will be back to this Secrets. We LOVED that it was adults only!! Every night after dinner we headed over to the piano bar where there was usually some type of entertainment going on, that was so nice. It was a great stay. we can't wait to return to our friends in Jamaica.

First Visit to Jamaica

We have vacationed many times to the Caribbean. This was the second Secrets hotel that we have stayed at and it was our first trip to Jamaica. We enjoyed the close proximity to the beach, the quality of the room, the friendliness of all of the staff, the overall cleanliness of the resort, prompt response to refill the hospitality bar in the room, the Silver Birds concert and the Coco bar (coffee). It was fun to watch (participate in) the St Patrick's Day parade that occurred at the resort. Considering that the Hard Rock Cafe is immediately adjacent to Secrets (accessible via a Security gate walk-through), we took advantage of that opportunity for a few hours on St Paddy's Day as well.We enjoyed taking the 2 hour bicycle tour that showed us the area in close proximity to the resort. We loved the pool ballet at the St James pool - this arrived as a surprise and was conducted by an extremely talented group of synchronized swimmers. We enjoyed the "Jerk Chicken" that was served almost every day by the "travelling BBQ" at the beach. We also enjoyed the food at the Portofino, El Patio, Blue Mountain and seafood (poolside) restaurants. The nighty performance at the piano bar was wonderful as well. The staff who stood out included: Carol making omelettes seemingly for hours every morning at the World Cafe, Annette (cleaned our room), O'Neil and Ginelle at the lobby bar as well as Romaine and Sheldon at the pool bar. Although we did not use it on this trip, we are scuba divers and it was helpful to have a Scuba business on-site. Relative to other adult-only resorts that we have stayed at, the service response time by the bartenders and the waitress staff was slower than what we've experienced elsewhere. To be clear, this was not the staff's fault - each one of them was working at the highest pace possible. To us, it appeared that there simply weren't enough staff present relative to the number of clients. The offsite excursion to Negril (purchases at the kiosk in the shopping area at the resort) was over-sold by John and under-delivered by Marvin. In short, we had expected to see more of what daily Jamaican life was like than what we actually ended up seeing. The taxi was clean and comfortable; however, from the moment that we had sat down, instead of describing the benefits of what we would see that day, Marvin (our driver) suggested that he could offer a better tour to another location the next day at less cost if we were to contract with him directly. John, who had sold the excursion to us, among other things, had promised a cooler and told us to bring drinks from our room. Clearly, this information was not communicated to Marvin, our driver and as a result, we had no cooler that day. We were dropped off at 7 Mile Beach, a place that we had never been before, and we were provided with no suggestions concerning places to eat / go nor warnings about what to expect (cover charges etc). This excursion was not worth the amount of money that was charged. None of this was the fault of Secrets; however, I'm mentioning it for the purposes of "buyer beware". Our experience at Secrets St James was the relaxing vacation that we desperately needed. If we were to return to Jamaica, then we would definitely stay at Secrets St James again.

We were able to "unplug", mostly ...

Beautiful inside and out, very well maintained grounds, however, our room was showing some wear and even had burn holes in the upholstered love seat and chair (supposedly non-smoking) and bleach marks on the coverlet. Everyone was very attentive and friendly. We felt like we could unplug from the cold of winter and just enjoy the beautiful surroundings, beach (water was wonderful) and pool (temperature was just right!). My one big disappointment was the food. The website said there were 7 restaurants but what they didn't say is that they are at the neighboring resort. To go get breakfast was a 3/4 mile round trip walk and that was the closest restaurant. The food was just average and our favorite was the Italian restaurant. After walking some distance in the heat, humidity or rain (our room did have a large umbrella for us to use) it was disappointing that the restaurants were not very cool. There were lots of "extra" amenities in our room that made the St. James a very nice place to stay (i.e. - very comfortable beds and pillows, robes and slipper to use, rain shower head and a hand-held shower, magnifying makeup mirror, ceiling fan, and the quickest free wifi I've ever experienced!!) If I were to recommend coming here, I would probably recommend the Wild Orchid which is "next door" to the St. James because it has all the restaurants and their beach was bigger than the one at the St. James. I would also recommend the glass bottom boat ride in the early morning from the St. James. We saw some beautiful things!

Great resort

We were there for five days. Fantastic property. The beaches and pools were fantastic. The staff friendly and fun. Nightlife was varied and fun. Beach dance party, piano bar, outdoor stage with great band and shows. Food was just ok.
