Our Opinion

Secrets St. James is a great resort destination for anyone wanting luxurious and top-notch service. With great food options, quality drinks, gorgeous beaches and a plethora of activities within reach, the Secrets St. James is a prime all-inclusive resort for couples and adults wanting a quieter and relaxing getaway.

With a stunning location on a private, sugar-white sand beach, Secrets St. James presents guests with a quiet, relaxing, oceanfront destination. The resort's classic furniture and modern fabrics echo this modern take on the sophistication of the Victorian era. Should a guest want to kick up the excitement a notch, there's Secrets Wild Orchid next door, with it's welcoming Jamaican vibe. The best of two worlds.

Location: Beachfront, 35 minutes from Montego Bay Airport.

Adults Only Resort

My wife, Debbie, and I usually do a cruise but our local Travel Advisor suggested we might enjoy and All-Inclusive, Adults Only Resort. She sent us a lot of different options and we settled on the Secrets St. James in Jamaica.Being used to the great service one receives on cruises we were anxious to make the comparisons on this all-inclusive resort. We both read some of the reviews posted on the Secrets web site and found those that loved it while others picked apart various parts of their stay, from the food to the entertainment. We jumped on a "Deal of the Day" special offer and prepared for our journey not knowing what to expect. We arrived in Montego Bay on a Saturday and were told to expect someone to meet us inside the airport after we collected our luggage. To our splendid surprise there was, in fact, someone there to meet us. A very nice young man that drove us to the resort and gave us a good history lesson on the way to Secrets St. James. We were dropped off at the front door and were welcomed by the porters standing outside. So far, we were impressed! They were all dressed the same, looking very neat and organized and were eager to grab our luggage and get us inside to register. They all speak excellent English too, yeh mon.We registered and were introduced to our concierge for the week, Miss Brittany. She was very cheerful and explained all about our stay and the resort. We did not know what to expect for a room, or if we could see the water from it. We were placed on the first floor with a very nice pool about 100 ft off our patio and the Caribbean Sea just beyond that. Our room was beautiful with a 4 poster bed, king size but the mattress was a bit saggy and probably should have been replaced months ago. We survived the mattress! The bathroom was nice also, with a huge Jacuzzi tub plus a very nice shower, a good sized room with a great view.We were really impressed with ALL of the staff. This resort is quite large with several pools, restaurants, shops and activities. Everyone was friendly, smiling, professional and they were all neatly dressed, all of the staff from room attendants to gardeners! The Restaurants! We thought the food was excellent. Breakfast for us was at the Buffett every morning except for one day when we were treated to breakfast before listening to a resort presentation. We were also given a Romantic Dinner for two as a gift for going to the presentation. It was a great dinner on the beach with our own waiter. Very romantic. We ate at all but one restaurant and found the food to be very good to great. There were plenty of options at each venue for food which is very similar to what you are offered on a cruise ship.We were very impressed at the cleanliness of the entire Resort, both inside and out.The only problem was there didn't appear to be as many outside lounge chairs to accommodate everyone. You had to go out early to place beach towels on the chairs you hope to save for yourself either in the sun or the shade. Most guests respected this but we had one person that moved our towels and beach bag off our spot and claimed it for themselves, and argued when we confronted them about it. Oh well! There's plenty to do at the resort and outside the gate. We rode bikes, kayaked and did a nice excursion riding down a nice river on a bamboo float with a native guide, very relaxing. To finalize,,,,, this was an unexpected pleasurable week for us and we would recommend this spot to all of our friends.

Very pretty

We were here for a long weekend with my husband's company as an incentive trip. The staff were good and at times fun and engaging. The restaurants were good, but expected better food. The Italian restaurant was our favorite. They had a nice breakfast buffet, but the place was jammed. We opted for breakfast in our room, that was lovely. The gym is small for the amount of people there and crowded in the early am. Beach is nice and water sports plenty. We had rough seas, so several times snorkeling was cancelled. It is breathtaking there. The nightly entertainment was fun. The spa was crowded, yet they accommodated. While we were there we took advantage of the activities the hotel offered listed on the daily activity menu and enjoyed them.

Honeymoon Holiday

My essential guide to both sides of this hotel complex (St James & Wild orchid) and also read my other review of Breathless which is the brand new secrets hotel next door. I'll break this down into sections as there is a lot to coverHotel St James & Wild orchidGENERALThe hotel itself is a large complex of approx 350 rooms and same for wild orchid making 700 rooms and approx 1400 people at Max capacity, giving the resort a busy and loud feel, there is the option of a paid upgrade to the ''preferred club" but I will detail that later. You need to be up early to get a good sunbed, I got up at 7am every morning and a lot were taken already. There are signs stating that beds reserved but not used for 30 mins that articles will be removed but this was never enforced. Get up early to avoid disappointment!!Cleanliness was a big thing for us, the general state of the hotel was of a good standard including all restaurants. The main area that suffered was the pool and outside area, with cigarette ends over the floor from the day before that were not cleaned up Be careful in the sea around Jan, Feb time as we encountered some jellyfish, but there are notices about this on local publications ROOMSThe rooms are quite spacious and clean with a small Jacuzzi bath in and a modern feel. Turn down service was pretty standard but nothing wow about it, no towel art. Our cleaner Corry we met a few times and she was so caring and sweet, does a great job of doing the room up.We had paid for a junior suite ocean view, but... the ocean was only a small glimpse which could not be seen from the room unless you were at the balcony door. We did ask to be moved as it was our honeymoon and they set to work to help, Shanneal was amazing on front desk and upgraded our room to an amazing view.POOLSThere are 2 main pools and 2 further ones in preferred, these have loud music broadcast across them so it's hard to relax, the entertainment around the pool is great and you can get involved as much or as little as you like without hassle. On our first day here the was a small rain shower and we had to exchange towels, only to be told they had ran out! The preferred club pools are quiet and relaxing.STAFFThe staff make this place, never have I met such a bunch of happy, easy going and friendly people. With exception of just 1 or 2 they make you feel right at home. If you go to the world cafe buffet look out for Rodger the fresh pasta chef, his food is cooked to perfection and he is a funny man too, The French chef Garnet is also the most helpful and accommodating chef I met, he'd did a couple of off menu things for us and made our experience special as did Orvil the waiter in French restaurant did too, great guys. Look out for Leo and Kedesha the waiting staff around the pools, theyare funny friendly and anything you want they'll do, also look out for O'Neil in the piano bar, top man too.ENTERTAINMENTThe entertainment staff are on top form here, they don't bother you if you don't want to join in. A varied range of activities to do including poker, blackjack, name that tune, jeopardy, bingo and Jamaican games will keep you happily going.Special mention to Superman and Raven for being so attentive and making time for us.The hotel also offers a nature walk, scuba demo, kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkelling at no cost. Other water activities are available at a costFOODWe've visited a few boutique and 5* hotels and eaten some great food, but this place didn't wow us at all. Apart from the fresh pasta stand in world cafe, the French chef and Himutsu Asian grill the food was standard. This said they do come round the pools area with a Jerk chicken cart BBQ and this is awesome. The restaurants are accommodating and will prepare some off menu things if they can.PREFERRED CLUBYou can upgrade to the club if it's not already in your package when you booked. You have to check the website to see what's fully included, but it comes at an extra $80 or $120 USD a day depending if you want the preffered room too. We used the pool facilities and it was beautiful, quieter, nicer sunbeds and towels, no music to annoy you. Private small buffet and lounge and other nice touches. Preferred club here is like standard at other hotels we've stayed at. The whole hotel should have been at this level. BREATHLESS HOTEL.Staying at this hotel will give you full access to both St James & Wild OrchidPlease read separate review for this info from 30th Feb 2017...... It's worth the wait All in all it was a good stay but in my opinion not a 5*, had it not been for the staff we would have not really enjoyed it as much. I don't see us coming here again as it is.Hope this helps Enjoy

Just go get something to drink before you sit down and read this as it will be lengthy.Let me start with the cons as they are the least of everything.Initially we booked our trip for Breathless however as it was still under construction we were moved over to Secrets St. James. Breathless is now open so that problem should go away. As a GOLD PLUS member of UVC at the time I has asked ahead of time for an upgrade however that did not happen yet some people did tell me that they were upgraded and they are not members so I am disappointed at Secrets St James.Upon our arrival we were greeted by Kamesia a member services representative. As our room was not ready as yet (1:15pm), we were taken to the restaurant for lunch and told that our room would be ready upon our return scheduled for around 2:45pm. Lo and behold when we returned still no room however everyone else who was checking in were completed. I was less than impressed as our bags were at the front of the line upon arrival. Well after hounding various people we were finally given our room at 4:15pm. As a goodwill gesture following our complaint to our representative the next day we were given a free Hydrotherapy pass for a day. As it id very limited we never used it. Still no upgrade as we are entitled to.Now for the positives. Let me start off by saying that the majority and I mean majority of people we encountered were very cheerful and positive. I will list a bunch of them and sorry for those who I may have missed that we had contact with.Members Representative - Kamesia - Great lady who was there to help us when she could.Housekeeping - Correy - We were on the 4th floor in building 3 at the St James in room 3411. This lady was absolutely gracious and happy. Hostesses - Latonia and Christhan at the World Cafe. They always greeted us with a smile and welcome as if they knew us as family.Servers - Fabian (Potofino), Robert (Blue Mountain), Derval (Bordeaux), Renae (Oceana), Akeem (World Cafe), Gausha (Himitsu), Kimberley (Oceana), Itaschie (World Cafe), Keneil (Oceana), Jodi-Kay (Piano Bar), Mariah (Beach) As I said there were many others who are great at what they do.Facilities - The facilities are large and great for walking or running. Lots of walkways to take advantage of either going to the beach, restaurants, shopping (albeit expensive) or bars. The grounds are kept immaculate and the views breathtaking either looking out over the ocean seeing cruise ships or freighters coming and going or overlooking the bay to see the mountain side. The buildings are kept clean as people continuously sweep, mop or whatever needs to be done. The beaches although man made are great with a lot of chairs and shade availability. The one downside is the resort needs to police them more for those who abuse taking chairs. The time limit is supposed to be 30 minutes unattended, however in some instances it was half days without anyone showing up. I for one say take the towels away and open up space. Now for the restaurants. Some people complain about the variety or quality of food however I have to say it was probably overall above average. Buffet breakfast is buffet breakfast wherever you go. In general you could have eggs done sixteen different ways to Sunday, whether it be poached, hardboiled, omelettes, scrambled or whatever you wanted. There was also bacon, sausages, various breads, bagels, muffins, etc., cereal, yogurt, pancakes, waffles as well as the cheeses, deli meats, smoked salmon along with some great smoothies.Lunch was once again at the World Cafe with buffet style food. Whether it be salads, fish, chicken, pork, beef, tacos, a great pasta station and then perhaps my favourite where you could get fresh shrimp, calamari, chicken filet, fish filet or steak filet grilled as you wait. Throw in french fries, various types of homestyle potatoes, rice, vegetables and you were there. Deserts a plenty for everyone whether it be cakes, ice cream, etc.. You could also pick up burgers, dogs, nachos., etc. down at the beach. The highlight may be in fact there was a mobile jerk chicken wagon that went around the beachside walkway at 12:30 daily where you could get basic chicken or jerk chicken hot off the grill. It was super. On to dinner. We tried most every restaurant and without going in to great details our favourites were Oceana and Portofino. Both of these restaurants had superb service as well as great food. There were nights with specials not on the menu such as a grilled red snapper with a sauce which was spectacular. One other highlite was on Saturday night there was a seafood night at the World Cafe (the only night it was open for dinner) and I must say the lobster tails were outstanding. They had some of the largest tails I have ever seen and they were great.Entertainment. Most nights the entertainment was down at the Piano Bar. Don't let the name fool you as it is only a location. They must have seating for 200 or more people and you are taken care of. Whether it be the Bob Marley history show, Secrets own band, circus night, guest amateur time or whatever you will have a great time having a drink, watching the entertainment and overlooking the bay towards the mountains. There are numerous bars spread throughout however this was our favourite before calling it a night. Now for my last comment and hopefully most people will take note. Although your trip is an all inclusive the staff at this resort make a very small salary in the range of $100 per week. Yes that is per week and they can work upwards of 60 hours per week. As such tipping goes a long way to making your stay and their lives much more enjoyable. Please think of them when you are there as they certainly do appreciate it.

Renovia Presidents Trip

My wife and I came to Secrets St. James's on the Renovia President trip 2/17-2/21. We had a fantastic time. One of the best parts of the trip were the people. You are greeted with a smile and a "hey mon" most of the time and most do their best to make your stay memorable. There is one I will remember as long as I live and that was Leo. The best service on the beach or wherever he was and he was everywhere. I want to go back just to see Leo. The resort as a whole is worth going back to also. The rooms are very accommodating. The bed was great but could have used a bottle or two in the room. The pools were a lot of fun and there were plenty of activities to keep you busy. The snorkeling right off the beach was great. They do need to turn the heat up on the "hot" tubs though. The food overall was good. I would have liked to have seen another breakfast option either a sit down or wider selection on the room service menu. The views are amazing and if going to Montego Bay this is the place to stay. If you do go do yourself a favor and seek out Leo. You won't be disappointed he'll make your trip memorable.
