Sunscape splash Montego Bay October 8-15/17Let me start out by saying this was not the vacation we expected for the price we paid. Nine of us, all family, ranging in age from 5-76, booked this vacation with Sunwing, supposedly a 4* resort. I don’t usually write reviews but the check in escapade and the ‘stay at one, play at two’ prompted me to do so. First the check in-beware ...they will try to upgrade you for a fee. We were told we booked standard rooms; this is true but we were not expecting the rooms overlooking the lobby that looked more like storage rooms! They told us they would upgrade us to ocean view for a price which started at $80 US per night /person going down to $10 US per night /person. After an hour of frustration and refusing to pay anything more than we had already paid, the upgrade was then free. ...but we were told not to tell anyone on the resort. After speaking to another couple at the resort, we learned that they too had been delayed about an hour at check in, and they received an upgrade too, but for a fee! The standard rooms they are talking about can be seen from the front desk, just look up to your left. A member of our party looked up, saw these rooms and said I hope that’s not the rooms we get and so I asked, half joking, and was told yes those are the standard room we booked. So I’m not sure if it’s a scam to see if you will pay more to upgrade but don’t i...t’s not worth it.Second fiasco -When you stay at Sunscape Splash , you have the ‘run’ of two resorts, the other being the Cove. This is a fact, written in the Sunwing vacations book, confirmed by the person we booked with at Flight Centre and on Sunwing.ca , however, at the resort we were told it was the other way around and that if we wanted to eat at the Cove’s restaurant we would have to pay $25US for a reservation?! I checked the website, took a screenshot and went to the Sunwing rep who told me she had been there three years and it had always been the other way around but she but she would have to have it ‘translated’ by someone at the desk and speak to a manager. She thought it was just sharing the water park. Translate what? It was clearly stated in black and white, full access, no mention of exclusions. After more frustration and a waste of an hour and a half, they agreed to give us the ‘black key’ enabling access to the Cove as well. The ‘black key’ is actually the same room card just black on the back instead of white. This is how they differentiate guests from Sunscape and the Cove, as there are no wrist bands at either resort. That said, the rooms were clean, as were the bathrooms throughout the resort. No complaints about the beaches ( just be on the lookout for jelly fish). Calm, shallow waters, and sandy beaches ideal for young children. Weather was great, hot and sunny! Take lots of sunscreen! An FYI for beach towels. There are two locations to get your beach towels. You sign out towels, literally, no towel cards here. Use either but it’s easier to pick up and return to the same place. Records are all kept on writing pads and the two locations don’t seem to communicate with each other. If you pick up two towels from one location and take it back to the other, the first location still has a record showing you owe them two towels.Food-the first couple of days the food at the buffet for lunch and supper wasn’t good at all, seemed dried out like it had been sitting. (The reason we wanted to try the Cove). After the first couple of days things improved. However, the breakfast buffet was always tasty and hot with a good selection. Don’t miss out on the jerk chicken at the end of the beach by the Cove! The restaurant at the Cove is good, as is the Seaside Grill (Sunscape).Overall the staff was friendly and helpful (although front desk staff not so much). Shout outs to -Oraldo, super friendly, awesome singer! Jason the fire dancer, awesome performance and very informative. Stephen the ‘aqua server’, super long jumper, funny and entertaining; look for him along the beach by the Cove, wearing long dress pants, shirt and tie and walking in the ocean to deliver drinks! And last but not least, Oliver our tour guide with Island Vibes Adventure Tours. Oliver is very friendly and knowledgeable. We felt safe and comfortable with him as our guide. Be sure to ask for him, or just look for him outside the entrance to the lobby (he works for the hotel). Free wifi throughout the resort is a bonus, as is the no reservations policy for the restaurants, as well as proximity to the airport. The area is very picturesque. I witnessed the pool water being tested a number of times per day. All four pools were clean. However, the water park needs some updating, it’s a bit run down and the stairway to the slides was not very clean. There was a bucket of cigarette butts on one of the landings, cigarette butts on the steps as well as crushed beer cans. This is a children’s play area, (as well as adults) and should be clean and safe. The elevator is in desperate need of an overhaul! One can never be sure if you will make it to your floor! The alternative isn’t that appealing either; the stairs are narrow, cement without nosing to help prevent falls and a little bit scary to use on your own at night. These stairs are more like service stairs for the employees rather than guests.Overall, we enjoyed our vacation, but I wouldn’t return to this resort. Although the resort has some positive qualities, mentioned above, and some great staff, the upgrading’ and ‘stay at 1, play at 2’ escapades really didn’t sit well with me. We have always booked with Sunwing and the reps have always rectified any issues right away, so I’m not sure what happened this time?? Pool delivery service was awesome..Thanks to Stephen Brown from the bar. The best attendant ever!!! Also Daniel from housekeeping, excellent customer service. Rooms were spotless and everywhere was just clean and fresh. Enjoyed every second spent at this resort.
Hotel is very clean, food was delicious. Everyone is super friendly especially Tishane from the entertainment team and StacyAnn from housekeeping. My only tiny complaint is that the beds are a little too hard. But besides that everything was awesome.
This resort is priced right and has good value for money. The amenities are well maintained and enjoyable. I loved the cocktails and the ‘private beach’. Snorkeling can be done right at the hotel. The hotel is a family resort so expect lots of children. Request a higher floor that doesn’t overlook the pool for some privacy.
