Our Opinion
The Sunset Beach Resort is a great option for anyone looking for good value in Jamaica. This resort is great for couples and families. Kids will love the water park complete with slides and waterfalls. The food is also good here, especially considering this resort is only rated 3.5 stars. A solid choice for a Montego Bay vacation.
Overview
Please note: Sunset Beach Resort and Oasis at Sunset in Montego Bay will be combined to create the Sunscape Cove Montego Bay, effective December 2015.

A Canadian favourite, the Sunset Beach Resort Spa has a terrific location minutes from the bustle and shopping of Montego Bay, featuring a pleasant open-air lobby which is a great gathering place. Located on its own white sand peninsula, this is the playful resort for everyone; families, singles and couples. The little extras like afternoon tea, cooking classes and kids club until 9pm daily, combined with the fabulous resort amenities, make it the perfect choice for your tropical vacation.

Location: On its own private peninsula, 15 minute drive from the airport, shopping and nightlife of Montego Bay.

An inexpensive all-inclusive with no bells and whistles

This was my first all-inclusive resort vacation, so here goes...The lobby is all open and very welcoming when you check-in. My complaint at check-in is that they don't have enough staff working the check-in at peak times. We must have taken nearly an hour to check-in. That's the last thing you want when you travel half a day to get to the resort. My recommendation here is to try and get a drink from the bar before waiting in line to check-in. Beyond the lobby the main areas of the resort just feel like they need updating. For example, the ceiling of the big open area in the lobby and walkway to the pools and restaurants has the clear plastic panels, some of which are missing. This is really unsightly for what I thought was a classier resort. The buffet food is nothing special. They occasionally have tasty local favorites - Ox Tail for example, was one of my favorites. Don't expect gourmet food especially from the buffet. If you are looking for food options 24hours, don't expect the buffet or the island grill to be open after 9pm. They only have a 24-hour cafe that serves finger foods. Their restaurants are nothing to write home about either. Expect to wait in line as they don't take reservations. They have three restaurants that are open to all guests not including the buffet. Most nights one is usually closed, due to them being understaffed. The best restaurant is probably the Italian restaurant. They have options for adults and kids to satisfy the pickiest of eaters. I would not recommend the seaside grill. As they don't have a dedicated kitchen, the food is likely prepped way before then brought to the outdoor restaurant. This is evident in the food when served. I had the pork chops which were very dry and was a rather small portion. If you plan on doing excursions make sure you budget ahead of time. I wasn't aware of the exorbitant prices even for a resort-related excursion and would have cost my family of 3 about $300 to go on the 1-2 hour catamaran ride. Also if you want to go anywhere on the island taxis are ridiculous too. Expect to pay $50 or more each way to go anywhere good. Just wish uber or lyft were available...There are some decent things about the resort. The view on the beaches was beautiful. Their bartenders aren't stingy with their pours, which for me was good. For the most part the service of the resort was good. The staff tries to make your stay an enjoyable one. The rooms are actually pretty nice. I do like their complimentary fridge stock (water, beer, soda). Its a good thing to have if you plan on doing a beach day or venturing outside of the resort. The waterpark area is good if you have children. As an FYI, make sure you are watching your children in the water on the beach or pool since we saw the lifeguards not really watching the water frequently. My son was afraid to go down the big slide and we finally managed to talk him into it our last day there. In conclusion, on a budget its an OK resort. If you go and expect great food and lots to do on the resort you will be disappointed. However, for a relaxing vacation its a reasonable value.

Should be a 5-Star

Absolutely incredible. The food, the staff, the drinks, the pools, the whole experience was simply superb. The only two (2) complaints I would have are these:1) Not much to see around the resort (if you get out). The closest gift shop is a 45 min walk.2) There are rocks on the beach as you get into the water.A few tips for shoppers:- Don't go to the Hip Strip with the US$40 taxi ride offered by the hotel.- If you walk out of the hotel, there are taxis and you can negotiate your price much cheaper.- Don't buy liquor anywhere else than the duty free shop at the airport - it is cheaper at the airportThe safe is a keypad safe with your own code, not a keycard safe, so it's much safer. The rooms have a mini-bar with free soft drinks, water and beer.

Amazing family resort!

We were at sunscape splash from march 18th to the 24th. It was our first time in Jamaica and were very impressed! Awesome resort...very good for families. If you are looking for a resort to party and look for single girls/guys...this is NOT the resort for you lol....its all about kids and families and the staff go above and beyond to make your stay a very memorable one! The food at the buffet was excellent and has so many different varieties for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Just delish! Cant comment on any restaurants b/c we never went to eat there. The buffet is the easiest with 2 kids. Great staff, great hotel...clean and comfy beds! Awesome for kids of any age, and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who has kids and wants to get away on vacation!

Not a 4 star

We travel each year and Jamaica is our favorite place. We normally stay in Negril but tried Sunscape in Montego Bay. We were told it was a 4 star resort and it was not. The rooms are average but very little place to unpack your clothes. Bathrooms are small and need some TLC. But they are clean and the housekeeping staff are excellent.Food is always cold and service lacks in the dining room. Took about 10 mins to get wine and water is not refilled during your meals. Water slide and lazy river were a highlight for all ages. Kids and adults loved that part of the trip. It does have lots of sand in this area and needs a cleaning. And find Suetanya, tip her well. She is worth it! Makes the best drinks and gives the best service. She will make sure you have a drink whenever you want it. Another great employee is Roan, the photographer. Very friendly. The entertainment is awesome. You must see the Beauty and the beast night. All in all a great vacation once our expectations were adjusted. So if you are expecting a 4 star, lower your expectations.
