OverviewA hacienda-style hotel located on the famous Negril Beach, Charela Inn is known for its friendly staff. All rooms have air conditioning and a private balcony or patio.
We have always stayed in the cliff area. For several years, we were at Charela Inn's sister property, Le Mirage. This year, noting how often we came to the beach here, we did our whole stay at Charela (3 nights in a seaview deluxe, 4 nights in a junior suite). The rooms were clean, well-furnished, and comfortable, ample storage, mini-fridges (bigger one in the suite), coffee makers, very good a/c, easy check-in. Both rooms had whirlpool tubs (bigger in the suite) and the deluxe had a bidet. I tried both tubs--it took a while for enough warm water to fill, especially the 2 person tub, but once filled, both worked fine. There were plenty of electrical sockets so recharging gadgets was a snap. The room safes (mechanical in the deluxe, electronic in the suite) worked fine. Staff did a good job of making sure we knew how all the controls, etc. worked before leaving. We loved both rooms. The balcony of the deluxe felt a little exposed to the dining area--felt a little awkward having coffee in my bathrobe--but I'm used to the super-privacy of the cliffs. The hairdryers provided were great and a cut above other hotels I've been in. Toiletries were provided (combo shampoo and conditioner, lotion, soap). We didn't get a meal plan as we usually like to explore. However, the 2nd day my mild cold turned into an ear infection and once I got medical treatment (kudos to Nurse Beth at Comforts of Home!) I didn't feel like doing too much wandering. Good news was that the meals at Le Vendome ranged from good to great. The five course dinner won out most evenings, and even for two veteran explorers, it was so nice to not have to leave the property. Our server had the chef do a special birthday touch to my dessert on that evening--a very nice gesture. We enjoyed the live music both nights. Thursday night had more variety, and staff as well as the band wanted everyone to have a good time, encouraging people to dance, etc. It was a good mix for an older crowd, with songs from the 60s to current tunes. Charela Inn seemed to have a dressier clientele--I wish I'd brought more than two dresses. That's not a negative in any way, just noting that if you have a few sundresses that don't get out much, now's your chance :-) We have done our share of dining at battered picnic tables, etc. so tablecloths, dinnerware, and up-scale service was a really nice change. There are always plenty of tables in their swimsuit-friendly area if that's more your thing. I should also note that I've never had better French baguettes anywhere, ever. The beach! Charela Inn really does have the best beach around. The water is clear and quite shallow for a long way out. Tons of coconut trees provided wonderful shade, helpful staff to get loungers set up, clean, raked beach every morning even though I'm sure the evening rainstorms scattered debris. Beach vendors seemed less aggressive in the Charela Inn section but still available for fruit, patties, etc. We were there during a very rainy, cloudy time, which actually worked out great for me since I wasn't supposed to get too much sun with my medication. And since that meant I was on the beach at sunset, I should note that there were no biting or stinging insects around, since I've been eaten up at twilight in the past at other properties. It was a lovely stay. We wanted a hassle-free, comfortable beach vacation to relax and not worry about the details of anything ( the ear infection fiasco was more than enough!) and that's what we got. All the staff were friendly and welcoming, AND professional and on top of things. This is going to be our regular Jamaican retreat.
We just returned from 9 days in the Jr Suite at Charela Inn and loved it. The room was very clean and the housekeepers did an amazing job. My wife noticed that even the ceiling fans were spotless. The Jr suite overlooks the dining area and we were able to watch the evening entertainment from our balcony. We also watched some amazing sunsets from our balcony. The staff was excellent especially Minel, and in the dining room Debbie, Isheema and Jenice were great. There were a few negatives. The mattress was as hard as a rock and very uncomfortable. We realize some people prefer a very hard mattress, but there were extra hard. The Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom is useless. There is never enough hot water to fill the tub. The hot water in the shower was hit or miss, but never enough to fill the Jacuzzi tub. We occasionally took cold showers due to no hot water. and finally, they need to quit calling the evening entertainment a jazz/blues show. There was very little jazz and no blues at all. It was more of a Commodores/Lionel Richie Showcase. Overall the trip was great. This was our 18th trip to Negril, but our first stay at Charela Inn. We will certainly return in the future. The great location and service completely overlooked the few minor negatives.
I absolutely enjoyed this vacation to Negril and do plan on returning. The weather was the perfect. I enjoyed walking 7 Mile Beach everyday it was safe interesting with many small cute shops restaurants massages and people along the way. There are plenty of water sports and activities to make for fun and exercising or just relax under one of the beautiful aged coconut trees! I’ve been to Negril many times and will continue to make this my ultimate and favorite adventure vacation spot!
We had a wonderful meal here the seafood crepe was delicious and my husband had the snails which he enjoyed followed by prawns . The staff were so helpful and alway willing to please, we also enjoyed the Jazz music , would recommend anyone to eat here and we hope to return again before we leave .
This was our second trip to Charela Inn with a year in between. Last year we went during September when Charela was closed so we did a split trip between CSA and Cathca. This year since Charela did not open until Oct 1 and we wanted to travel on the 30th (flights are what they are) we stayed one night at Xtabi. I will do a review on Xtabi under a separate heading. We were the only guests at Xtabi, so they decided to close up the restaurant/bar on Sunday. We were up and ready to go, so we headed over to the beach. We were beach ready and did not know what to expect upon being dropped off at Charela but figured they would be ok with us spending the day on the beach. We let them know prior to our arrival that we were on our way. They were great. No problem. We headed to the beach and enjoyed a lovely morning. We were the only guests staying on Sunday. We were able to get into our room, a beachfront jr suite in no time. We were on the all-inclusive plan that they offer. We were able to have drinks and a modest lunch as a lot of items were not yet available. No worries. The place was spotless. And while there was lots of work being done around the resort, it just made it seem positive, like good things were coming. We had a great stay. The room was not the one that we had the last time we stayed but we wound up loving it just the same. The room was spotless, comfortable, lots of storage, lovely set up, great ac. We did feel that the one speed, slow, for the two ceiling fans, was a bit of a disappointment considering the temps. Otherwise, everything was great. The in-room coffee was welcomed. The fridge was great for keeping our water cold. All our meals were terrific. We had more local food than we had the last time we stayed and we enjoyed it all. Never had a disappointing meal, even though the menu was limited due to the re-opening and the limited number of guests. We are not fussy diners and made the most of what was on offer. Portions are large, meals put together with thought and served with a smile. Servers were attentive and apologetic when they had to inform us they did not a certain item. The beach was as great as I remembered and maintained beautifully. The person who ran things on the beach was great. Our chairs, table and towels were set up for us each day in advance of our arrival. He genuinely appeared to be concerned that we were pleased with our time on the beach. The water was wonderful. We spent a lot of time in the ocean. We enjoyed our walks along the beach at all times of the day. We just wanted to spend a week on the beach and not have to do anything, go anywhere and just hang and we were able to do just that. We were disappointed that the usual entertainment was not on offer this first week of opening. Will have to re-think our travel timing when we head back to Charela so we can be able to enjoy everything that the inn has to offer. It is in our opinion the Charela has the best spot on the beach. There are more than enough shady spots. The trees make the resort a haven along the beach. The service makes this a great understated place to relax and get away. The food and drinks where spot on. We had a very nice get away before holiday madness sets in. Thanks to everyone at Charela for making our time in Negril just what we hoped for. See you, again, I am sure.
