- What's Included
After our ole sans new year’s eve dinner, we decided to have lunch at Country Country in our last day in Negril. The food was very nice and tasty but the waitress had an attitude. She hardly managed to contain her dismay every time we asked her for something. She was slow and a bit rude. We were disappointed by the service but still had a nice lunch. It was also annoying that we had to walk quite a way to be able to pay with card. That should be standard procedure for a restaurant and hotel serving largely tourists.
Country Country was lovely. It doesn't have any luxury amenities, or all you can eat and unlimited drink options, but that is what we avoid anyway. The price per room is a fair deal for amenities and location. The rooms are big enough, clean, cosy, and come with verandas to hang out. There are no glass windows, just shutters; but you get a vape mat for mosquitos and I strongly recommend turning the AC off and getting cooled down breeze of the evening and sleeping to the sound of tree frogs. The mat will keep the mosquitos away. The grounds are beautiful, lush and cosy; no cold concrete blocks and impersonal stacked up rooms. There is a sense of privacy and serenity that one wants in a beach vacation. The staff in general were also very efficient and kind. They seemed to be happy doing their jobs, which made us think that they are well compensated for their work (well done management, if that's the case). The housekeepers were lovely, so as many of the bar and restaurant staff we interacted with (especially Andre). The management was indifferent, they never answered our email about a few things when we contacted them in advance. This made us worry prior to the trip, but we were relieved that their attitude was an exception. The restaurant is fine, a bit fancy and "international" at times (we wan to try local dishes when we travel, so many options didn't interest us); drinks the same, a bit more expensive compared to bars around but not exorbitant. The free breakfast that was included in the room was fantastic. Ackee and saltfish and banana pancakes were truly delicious. A few food stops are in walking distance (Aunty's, Best in West, Tree House) if you want to eat affordable local food outside the hotel. The beach towel game in the hotel is confusing. You are told to return your towels in the evening, but you rarely receive new ones back in the morning and have to repeatedly ask. And you need to reserve a beach chairs early enough, especially if you want shade. We got a sense that some regulars received preferential treatment and had their "reserved" beach chair in their preferred location guarded by the staff. This became problematic when a non-regular was asked to vacate his chair when an entitled regular came around noon and demanded "her" chair from him. The guy was left without a chair since it was too late for him to find a new one. Seriously, not cool. Beach is spectacular if you are into calm, shallow, warm waters (we are). There are lots of vendors, and the security guys (who were also super nice) made sure that you are not harassed by the scammers. Throughout the day, you receive a bunch of interesting vendors who do honest business, the orange juice guy, bread guy, the patty guy, the fruit lady, two lobster guys etc if you want their products. There are people who smoke ganja in the premises, but it is done discretely and doesn't affect you if you don't smoke. The pool is small but cute, but who needs a pool when you have the ocean this beautiful. The Margaritaville next door tends to get loud, and there is always a barrage of scammers and hustlers waiting to trick you into paying for an overpriced braided bracelet or rub you with aloe in front of it and demand for money. Some don't take no for an answer and get pretty aggressive. That was the only real unpleasant thing in this trip (not really Country Country's fault, but still affects your experience since it is next door) and we tried to avoid walking in that direction as much as we can.
Stayed for 5 nights with our to children of 4 & 7. Nice place and great staff. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. The only drawback for us, and this was probably just timing, but we were the only ones with kids there at that time.Even though everyone was accommodating we can't get past the fact that with only our children there, we were a bit on edge that they didn't make too much noise.Had there been other children there at the time of our stay we probably would have enjoyed it even more.At the hotel there is a small pool that the kids loved. And also the beach was absolutely the best. But that is what there is for kids at this small hotel. We will be going back, but for a couples holiday.
We stayed here for nearly 3 weeks and this idyllic place was ruined by poor management who should not be allowed anywhere near a hotel. They could not even arrange a taxi, there staff were often absent and I can see why. There are much nicer places to stay.
My husband and I visited Nov 22-29 and stayed in the most fabulous room, steps away from the beautiful sandy beach. The A/C was good but we kept our louvered windows open at night to hear the waves coming to shore and the tree frogs chirping. The tropical lush surroundings of this resort are pretty, even the rain downpour didn't dampen our spirits as we could seek shelter at the bar or restaurant. All staff members had ready smiles and were helpful. With only having breakfast included, it gave us the opportunity to explore other restaurants for lunch and dinner and there are lots (recommend The Best of the West for jerk chicken, Wine with Me (for a more bistro atmosphere), Aunty's Lobster (on the beach) and Ivan's. Definitely buy the Jamaican patties from the beach vendor who comes by most days. There were always enough chaise lounges on the beach and beach towels. The bar drinks were great. The swimming area (never crowded) was great. There is lots to do and see in this area outside of the resort, but it always felt like coming "home" when we returned to the Country Country property. We experienced the One Love Bus Pub Crawl which was outstanding - so much fun! Thank you to everyone at Country Country for making our "bucket list Jamaican vacation" fantastic: Monique, Erdlee, Lemonde, Christine, Cherie, Latoya, Tika, Andre, Francis, Dwayne and Super (our super-lative housekeeper) as well as all the other behind-the-scenes staff. This resort is the real Jamaica, not a crowded sterile all-inclusive, which is the reason we would come back again.
