Our Opinion

An older hotel, renovated in 2015. Lively with a good mix of people. Great food, great bars and great staff. The beachfront Jerk Chicken hut makes a great lunch. Narrow beach with lots of shade where you can walk safely for a mile along the beach. Great snorkeling opportunities nearby in the crystal clear water.

A wonderfully large resort which spills over sunny, tropical beachfront acres, Riu Negril also has plenty of shady palms for beach lovers preferring measured spells of sun worship. True 'pool people' will get a kick out of the submerged stools edging pool perimeters. A small fish 'habitat' protected by RIU at the far end of the beach earns applause for environmental responsibility.

Location: Beachfront, located in Negril, next door to Riu Tropical Bay, 5 min drive from downtown Negril, 1 hr from the airport.

Do not go here-run!!

My girlfriend & I got violently ill on the first night (Saturday) from the food, which was gross. We paid to "upgrade" our room which was a joke. The "King" bed was actually 2 twins pushed together, hard as a rock. We needed to check out on Sunday due to how ill we were. We found a new hotel and Cheap Caribbean was a great help with the process. Got us a room at Couples Swept Away, HOWEVER, RIU gave us a ridiculously hard time getting a refund. Mind you, we wanted a refund for the nights we were not going to stay there. We were literally sick to our stomachs and we had to make dozens of phone calls to corporate to no avail. We then were stuck there another night because we needed the refund to pay for the other hotel and the staff was so uncooperative. The next day they still gave us a hard time, and after hours of phone calls to dozens of people they finally "released" us. It was a nightmare. We saved for this trip and the hotel should be condemned. Food was inedible, gave us fever and severe stomach distress, the beds were ancient, drinks watered down and so on. But my biggest complaint is how they treated us, without any concern for our well being. I am still trying to file a formal complaint and I am still given the run around! By the way, Couples Swept Away was amazing!! Beautiful grounds, rooms, facilities and excellent food and drink. They treat you like royalty

10th time at Riu Tropical Bay

Just returned from Riu,lovely vacation.Same wonderful staff-Jackie,Mario,Damien and many others.Beach has plenty of shade,water warm ,gentle, clear blue but this year the lounge chairs were in poor condition (broken,sagging) ,on busy days not enough for all visitors.I talked to the assistant manager about this but he did not seem to take me seriously.Attention Management-this is a BEACH resort,there should be plenty of lounges and in good condition.This Riu is on a lovely beach,food is great,rooms spacious,staff wonderful-just needs some attention to details to justify the price.

Jamaica Mann Getaway!!

My wife, son and daughter-in-law went to Riu Palace Tropical Bay from January 31 to February 7, 2017. We went through Sunwing from Toronto. We landed at 3:00 p.m. a little late, our bus was there for us. It took three hours to get to our resort, between rush hour traffic and stopping at a roadside bar for a red stripe. Check in: We arrived at 6:00 p.m., the front desk was very quick and our room was ready. We also received a welcome drink "rum punch", very tasty.Room: Our first room was close to the highway and there was a sewer smell when we walked into the room. We stayed three nights in this room. We went to the front desk about the noise and smell and they were aware of that. They upgraded us to a junior suite in a quiet location at no charge.The safe in our second room did not work, maintenance was there within ten minutes to change the batteries. This was good. The toilets were a little tricky when flushing, ours backed up the morning we left. Maintenance again was there within 10 minutes to fix. Food: The main buffet was amazing, there was something for everyone. The food was delicious. The staff were very friendly. The young fellow (didn't get his name) making the omelettes in the morning was awesome. We went to two a la carte: the Steakhouse and Japanese. The Steakhouse was good and the Japanese was disappointing. It didn't meet our expectations. I read a lot of reviews that complained about no seating times for the a la carte's, there was not much of a wait at all. The jerk chicken on the beach was done up amazingly along with the vegetables and sausage.Beach: The beach was very nice and the water was like a bathtub. The fish came up and swam by us and they loved to have crumbs of bread. We like to beach walk. We went to the other RIU on the other end and had to go by the vendors. You would get hassled and it was annoying after awhile. There was always someone walking by selling "Cigars, Cigarettes" got a little annoying. Drinks: The drinks were good, a little watered down, but that wasn't a problem, Red Stripe was good.Entertainment: We did aerobics in the water which was a lot of fun. The entertainment at night seemed to be very good.We did an excursion with Scuba Caribe, had a great time. We did snorkeling, swam in the Pirates Caves, Rick's Cafe and Margaritaville. The crew took very good care of us.Overall, we had a great time. The Staff were very good, the grounds were kept very nice, beach was awesome but rooms could use an upgrade.

1st visit to Jamaica

This was our first time in Jamaica and our first stay at a Riu Palace resort. The most outstanding feature of this resort is the beautiful beach. We've been to many resorts in the Caribbean and this beach is gorgeous. The staff at the Riu are friendly and hard working. They provide lot's of fun activities and entertainment. We also enjoyed the casino and fitness center even though some of the equipment was in need of repair including the cooling system. There were a number of issues at this resort that brought down my rating. There weren't enough beach chairs to go around so if you wanted one for the day you had to get up by 6:30 am to claim one with your beach towel. Many of the available beach lounges were broken or saggy. It shouldn't be a big deal for a big resort like this to provide enough chairs for everyone so you don't have to play the musical chair game every day. One other issue that sounds trivial but was quite annoying. Our room was full of pesky mosquitos every night. Apparantly the maids leave the door open while cleaning and we had to spend time killing the little buggers every night and wear bug repellent to bed to keep from being eaten alive in our sleep. Have they not heard about the zika virus problem? Our room was quite dated looking and had a small bathtub/shower. The overall maintenance and upkeep of this resort was rather poor. The food here was average with the exception of the jerk chicken grill on the beach which was awesome. I got a case of the Montezuma's revenge from the salad bar which lasted almost a week. Obviously there are sanitary issues because I have an iron stomach and have never been sick like this after many trips to Mexico and the Caribbean. The resort does not provide any free excursions or airport shuttle service. We had to pay $100 in taxi fare from the airport. Overall, we had fun but will not return to this resort and can't recommend it to our friends.

Lovely holiday

Let's start with the positives, this was our honeymoon and we had never been to Jamaica before. We loved this country, the people, the feel of the place, the ethos, the culture, the food, everything. Such a stunning country I would thoroughly recommend, and I would certainly consider returning. The hotel upgraded us and gave us a free bottle of champagne in our room because of our honeymoon .. thank you! The hotel was stunning, there were workman around painting walls, gardeners mowing and planting. It was a lovely hotel, which was being well cared for. Fantastic room overlooking the stunning beach. The swimming pools are a little small, but the beach was right next door, so we were spoilt really. The cocktails and the food in the speciality restaurants were wonderful, excellent every time. The staff were good, and generally very helpful, nothing was too much bother. The negatives of the hotel, firstly there is a large sign that says no saving of sun loungers, but we would get down to the pool on our way to the gym at 7am and half the pool sun loungers would already be reserved !! I understand people were tipping the pool boys to do this !! So you had to be up early if you wanted to be by the pool! Riu have changed their dinner policy, now you must queue for your chosen restaurant if you wish to dine there at 6:30! So people were queueing from 5:45pm for the steak restaurant .... great fun on your holiday ! Also we didn't get into a restaurant a couple of times because one person would queue for 10 or more people, very unfair ! Riu you need to change your policy ! Final negative ... tipping ! This resort is full of Americans, which is no bad thing, but they have created a situation of extreme tipping. In the U.K. we tip if we have a good service in a restaurant, but not here in the hotel ! The Americans tip EVERYTHING ! Even just getting a drink at the bar, which means if you don't tip you have to wait until the barman has served everyone else (who may have arrived after you) then you may finally get served ! Lunch was the same, if you didn't tip then you will have trouble getting a table. Thomson say that you don't need to tip ... if you want to eat lunch or get served at the bar you need to tip !We went on a few Thomson excursions, they were fantastic! Our rep Christine was great, she really looked after us. Would recommend going to Ricks Bar, Southern Adventure, and horse riding. We also did a trip with Scuba Caribe the short snorkel tour, that was amazing the water is so clear!Fabulous holiday, would thoroughly recommend Jamaica !
