Our Opinion

An older hotel, renovated in 2015. Lively with a good mix of people. Great food, great bars and great staff. The beachfront Jerk Chicken hut makes a great lunch. Narrow beach with lots of shade where you can walk safely for a mile along the beach. Great snorkeling opportunities nearby in the crystal clear water.

A wonderfully large resort which spills over sunny, tropical beachfront acres, Riu Negril also has plenty of shady palms for beach lovers preferring measured spells of sun worship. True 'pool people' will get a kick out of the submerged stools edging pool perimeters. A small fish 'habitat' protected by RIU at the far end of the beach earns applause for environmental responsibility.

Location: Beachfront, located in Negril, next door to Riu Tropical Bay, 5 min drive from downtown Negril, 1 hr from the airport.

I came here after spending a few nights at the ClubHotel Riu Negril. I moved and must say I regret moving. Even though this hotel has a higher rating, the food at this hotel was not as good (not enough Jamaican food). The drinks were much better (especially the wine). The room was very nice and the beach was lovely. The New Years Eve Gala Dinner was very disappointing. I have spent New Year Eve at many hotels and I must say that this was the worst experience we’ve ever had. When we came to sit for dinner they did not know where to put us and the walk from our table to the buffet was dangerous (my heels kept on getting stuck on the walk way, so in the end I took off my shoes and walked bare feet, trying to avoid the broken glass) and they also ran out of the Jamaican food. The entertainment on New Years Eve was ok (a fight broke out during the entertainment). I will never come back to this hotel especially if I’m looking for somewhere nice for New Years Eve.

We arrived late but the riu had a driver waiting to drive us to Negril. The drive wasn't as long as we had expected after reading so many reviews. Maybe because it was late and there was no trafffic on the roads we arrived in about 1hr and 10mins. They checked us in quickly and we were off to our room. This resort has no elevators so if you have mobility issues ask for a room on the ground floor. Room is dated but clean and confortable. AC worked well and TV had lots of channels to watch. Sonia our cleaning lady always did a wonderful job cleaning and fridge was always stocked to our liking. Buffet is always open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and for dinner you always have a la carte options as well. We prefer the buffet and did not try any a la carte restaurants. There are so many options at the buffet we never felt the need to go anywhere else. After our first day Ionie and her breakfast crew knew exactly what we liked and had it waiting for us every morning. Great speedy service unlike we ever experienced in Jamaica before. Beach is nice but not the typical Negril beach. Pool is also nice but small but you can always find a lounger and you DONT have to get up a 6am to save your seat. You can get great service around pool and beach and around noon you can get some tasty food as well. They always have some type of show or band in the evening if you want to attend and i believe a disco at the other resort nearby but we did not really partake in any of that. We spend 6 days there right before the holidays and we had a wonderful and relaxing time. If you are looking for the hassle and bustle of Negril you may want to stay at another resort. If you are looking for good food and great service and a relaxing holiday this may be a good option.

I keep coming back!!

This resort is the best resort that I have ever visited. I've come back the past 4 years, visiting twice a year for 2 of those years. The staff is AMAZING, the food is great, the beach is phenomenal. I have never had an issue getting a lounge chair on the beach or by the pool. The bartenders are so great and friendly, and all of my drinks were very good. The entertainment staff is top notch. So friendly and they truly make the trip so fun. They really go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your stay. The only bad thing this past year has been the restaurants. They need to bring back the reservation system. It is just unacceptable to have to wait in line for an hour to eat at one of the specialty restaurants. The food in the restaurants is so good and I always look forward to eating at them all. This past time I went I couldn't get in even one night. This was such a disappointment. The reservations system worked perfectly, I just can't imagine why they would have changed the way of doing this. Please bring the reservations system back. Every guest was complaining about this. I really hope management will realize this before I come back in March. Nothing was wrong with the way it used to be done, which was to go in the morning and make the reservation for dinner in the lobby area. It was a perfect system, and honestly I've never been to an all inclusive that doesn't do reservations for the restaurants.All in all - this is still my favorite resort to visit. I'll be back for sure, just hoping the reservation system comes back.

Last minute Christmas trip

This was our 9th trip to Negril but our first stay at Riu Tropical Bay. We have always stayed at Beaches and love Beaches so we were a bit skeptical about this resort. We arrived on Dec 25 and stayed for 5 days. We booked two rooms, one for my husband and I and one for our daughters aged 16 and 18. Both rooms were clean, large and had a nice ocean view. Beds were comfortable. Our only issue with the rooms was the toilet in our bathroom - it did not like to flush.Beach was absolutely beautiful, weather was perfect. We love Jamaica.All the restaurants are in a central location. Breakfast buffet was delicious, coffee was amazing! For lunch we usually just got a light salad or jerk chicken. The only complaint is that there is not a lot of seating in the buffet at lunch time so it was at times hard to find a table. The resort was at capacity so I guess this was to be expected? For dinner we ate at the steak house - was so so - did not go back. Japanese was very good, but the best is the fusion restaurant. We ate there three times! So yummy! We checked out the buffet at dinner and it was incredible but we are really not buffet people. Overall the food was better at Riu than at Beaches. The only issue we had was that they only seat a limited number of people so you had to wait in line at 6pm if you wanted to eat in one of the restaurants. They only do two seatings 6:30 and 8. They do not take reservations. This was weird but we like to eat early so we just made sure we were in line around 6pm.Overall we had a lovely time. We would go back to the Riu. There is not as much to do for kids as there is at Beaches but otherwise I would say they are comparable.

Great vacation

I picked this resort because I wanted to stay on bloody bay. I can say that the resort was great. I have traveled many resorts this resort brought me back to a island feel. Also the workers very attentive what ever you might need. Really relaxed atmosphere. Cannot wait to return. USA
