An older hotel, renovated in 2015. Lively with a good mix of people. Great food, great bars and great staff. The beachfront Jerk Chicken hut makes a great lunch. Narrow beach with lots of shade where you can walk safely for a mile along the beach. Great snorkeling opportunities nearby in the crystal clear water.
Location: Beachfront, located in Negril, next door to Riu Tropical Bay, 5 min drive from downtown Negril, 1 hr from the airport.
The resort is beautiful with white sandy beaches and calm blue waters. This resort rolls out the red carpet in terms of hospitality from everything when you first check in to all the way to the end of your trip. We were there April 10 though April 16 and wish we had stayed longer. The food is pretty good. No reservations are accepted at the finer restaurants, so if you want to eat at 6:30, you have to line up around 6:10 or you will end up waiting until the next seating of which is between 8:00 - 8:30 and you end up missing a good portion of the entertainment. If you can't wait and don't want to miss the entertainment, the buffet is a really nice back-up. What they should do is just hand out pagers and when a seat opens up, they can page you informing your table is ready. However they tend to seat in large groups rather than individually because it works systematically in terms of food preparation. Recommend the steak house which is very popular if you want to try fine dining.Entertainment is good and very interactive. The entertainers put in a lot of effort into their productions. They engage the audience always with a smile and charming wit. They work long hours, some starting as early as 10:00 am with group activities and go well into 9:30 - 10:00 at night. Without the entertainment, the resort would be desolate. The Beach Party was fun with the laser lights hitting the sand when dancing commenced. The Michael Jackson Tribute was very good also with a lot of effort going into the production by the dancers. They are all very talented and should be appreciated. The restaurant staff and bartenders were very friendly and put in 110%. They make sure your glasses are full and when you are done with your plate at the buffet, they clear it immediately. They recognize you after the first day and make you feel like you are a part of their family or continuing loyal customer. The employees at the resort are very attentive and friendly also. The first day we arrived, the bellhop carried our luggage to our room and gave us a brief overview of the resort and small tour of our room. He checked to make sure everything functioned correctly and noticed our television was not working. He called the front desk to have maintenance look at it. When we returned from our brief moment at the beach to get ready for dinner, the front desk called to ask if our television was working. It was not working still and they said they would send someone up immediately. Of course they did and when maintenance came up, he ended up swapping out a new TV. It worked but the reception was still a little fuzzy. Turn down service was nice but not very consistent. There were some evenings we had it, some days we did not. The room was beautiful. We stayed in the 200 building on the third floor. We had a garden and partial ocean view from our balcony. Although our room had a sterile smell, you kind of got used to it. The bathroom was big but if you have knee problems or are elderly, use caution getting into the bathtub/shower because you have to grasp the railing to climb over the tub wall, which is pretty high. The walls are very thin. We heard our neighbors in the morning (because we weren't in our room during the day). And when I say we heard everything... we heard everything. I was traveling with my teenage daughter and the couple next door were engaged in amorous activities. I had to immediately turn on the television really loud and rush her out of the room so she would not hear our neighbors next door. Not only that, we heard every time their toilet flushed and when the woman got sick. Fortunately we never ran into each other walking in or out of our rooms at the same time. Overall no major complaints about the resort. If you are looking for a nice and relaxing vacation that is family oriented or just a romantic getaway with beautiful beaches and friendly smiles, RIU Tropical Bay in Negril is the place to go. Be sure to bring lots of singles and 5's because tips are appreciated by the hardworking employees at the resort. Also recommend on the first day to walk around the resort and talk to the staff about what to do and their recommendations. You would be amazed at what you discover and the helpful information given to you. My recommendation, sound proof the walls in the rooms and incorporate a better seating system for fine dining.RIU Tropical Bay Resort is the place to be and be seen!
the situation is gorgeous, perfect beach, swimming in an ocean like glass, only natural trees on the beach; great pool area and thanks so much to the RIU for being non-smoking. Rooms have everything you need, very clean and comfortable, great balcony looking at the beach. Food was wonderful - no-one should EVER complain, we ate in the buffet every meal and it was festive, nice atmosphere, and excellent food. We LOVED the staff, they decorated our dinner table the last night and I cried, they were so sweet.I only have one request - there are liquor dispensers in every room, but it is an ordeal to get a bottle of wine- they apparently need to have a manager at the front desk to "sign off" so it takes about an hour- at least. Who wants to sit in their room for 1 hour waiting for a bottle of wine? I am also irritated by this because I suggested to management previously to fix this but apparently they are not interested,But that was my only negative, the whole resort was beautiful, spotless, well-staffed and we felt sooooo well taken care of, we will be back MANY times!!!
This was our accommodation for our second week of our long awaited trip to Jamaica. I was so upset and thoughts of a nice romantic week were dashed when we entered our room to find two single beds pushed together. Not only was there not a queen or king-sized bed for two, each bed was made separately with tucked in sheets between. Every time I tried to remedy this situation by untucking the sheets, the chambermaid tucked them back in!The bathtub was very narrow and kind of scary to climb in and out of.Our fridge had been turned off so all our stocked liquids were warm. The most annoying was the lack of unbroken chaise loungers. We soon learned you had to head to the beach at the crack of dawn and stake out your chairs by putting your towel down. This did not guarantee you would still have your chair when you got back to the beach. The food was okay but the wine they offered with the meals was horrific. Nothing smooth about the red or white and even the rose was cutting. Beer was the only saving beverage. The Pina Colada type drinks were basically blended ice rather than the creamy texture it should have.I wouldn't go back there. Too many tips expected and so, so service.
At first the resort appears beautiful...but the rooms are showing wear and need to be updated. The tub/shower is very awkward to climb into...almost dangerous in fact. And there are no televisions in public areas so we had to pay $20 r/t for a taxi to take us to the Riu a mile away on Norman Manley Blvd (which should be a free shuttle). Then there's the chaos that is the dinner reservation system. They should just use pagers so you can walk around while you are waiting...but no, you must stand in line. Beds are old and are 2 doubles pushed together to look like a king. Very awkward. Also, the Amstar reservation reps (Daneisha) are awful. Wait till you get out to the beach and make excursiion reservations at Scuba Caribbe with Kenesha.
My siblings and I met up at this hotel, visiting from different parts of the United States, we had a great time. The staff took the time out to interact with all of us throughout our visit there. I have to say that they are very busy with the activities. I enjoyed the facilities and I thought everything was beautiful, my siblings agreed. I stayed for 12 days and I am ready to go back. The food was great and the dining Manager Howard was very patient even when guests were rude to him. Keep up the good work RIU Staff, you cannot please everyone, especially if they are just miserable!!! Well worth the money!!!
