Sandy Haven Resort
- What's Included
Great location on 7 Mile Beach - very helpful staff with local excursions and transportation recommendations - very quiet and relaxing resort - loved waking up to our ocean front room and continental breakfast - best was the cleanliness of the resort - the worst was the hard beds
My husband and I and our (adult) daughter stayed for 7 nights and opted for 2 Garden view rooms. We arrived near midnight, and were quickly and efficiently handed our keys and taken to the rooms and asked to come back in the morning for the full registration - much appreciated after an 18 hour journey. We would like in particular to mention Ralph, a trainee at reception, who was exceptional in his communicative skills and helpfulness. He seemed to have an almost non-stop shift over the Christmas period, yet remained cheerful and alert. The rooms were both large and comfortable. Garden view rooms are in the second building away from the beach and have the advantage of less noise, though most of the music that we did hear appeared to come from the hotel next door rather than Sandy Haven. The room on the ground floor had some mosquitoes, but was a bit larger with a kingsize bed. The room on the 3rd floor (no lift) however was quieter. We were delighted by the great service from the breakfast team, especially given some of the reviews we’d read here. We would like to mention in particular Melissa who already after 2 mornings knew our preferences exactly, and when our daughter joined us later one morning, ordered her breakfast just as soon as she appeared without our having to say anything. Kedeen also noticed our fruit preference and treated us to a plate of our favourite fruit on our last morning. The security personnel keep a tight watch on the stream of vendors, and if, as we did, you sit at the back where the trees give shade, then you are not bothered at all by them, rather you are entertained. Watch out for Norman the Patty man (with his bicycle) if you like the local patties. (You can also buy them just across the road from the hotel, as Norman had often sold out of the vegetarian ones by the time we saw him). Our very favourite place to eat (a vegan) dinner was Rasta ade, a 10 minute walk west along the beach, open until 8pm. Delicious, plentiful and inexpensive. We didn’t regret our choice of this hotel for one minute!
We were delayed by 1 day due to passport issues, and apprised the hotel. Since we missed a day we paid for, I’d requested an upgrade. Manager said she responded but I never received, and no upgrade was provided throughout our stay. While the room was spacious and clean, facility was never quite right. We paid for 3 occupants, but only 2 keys were provided. Had to request washcloths and water glasses everyday, and the nightstand was old and difficult to open. The jacuzzi heater never worked the whole week, and beach towels usually ran out. We had the worst bar food ever: mystery meat masquerading as burgers, rubbery calamari tasted like old freezer burn. Terrible continental breakfast (complimentary) consisted of the exact same limited items every single morning: unripe tasteless melon, cloyingly sweet dense chocolate muffin, and toast (the only edible thing). Coffee was good, but a glass of milk was $3. Some staff were friendly, some not. Def not a “luxury” boutique hotel.
First of all, the initial communication with the hotel was incredible! Tamar, (who seemed to be all over the hotel when we finally got there) was wonderful!! We loved our room and it's great third floor location!. Our room was very spacious and comfortable. The bed was excellent. Personally we like soft pillows and the pillows at Sandy Haven are pretty hard, even though we requested soft pillows. Room had a small refrigerator which was perfect to hold our water bottles. Wifi was excellent in both the room and throughout the hotel. The room had a safe, (which really isn't mentioned anywhere but important nonetheless). The room also has a modern clock radio which not only charged our phones, but played our music- excellent touch. Bathroom was modern and well equipped. The only small issue that was fixed was a lack of very hot water in the shower. We had very warm water after it was fixed, but truly never had a "hot" shower. The location of the hotel to us is the best on Seven Mile Beach. In the center of everything...so we loved this and walked almost everywhere. The rooms come with continental breakfast which consist of a fruit plate, a pot of coffee, juice, a mimosa, and a bread basket. To us, the fruit on the fruit plate were lacking in flavor almost every day, and the bread basket always had lukewarm to cool toasted bread and muffins. This said, the ala carte food offered, from omelettes to pancakes to a true Jamaican breakfast were excellent quality and delicious. Contrary to other reviews here on TA, we thought the servers were wonderful and totally into what they were doing. A shout out to Melissa who's big smile greeted us almost every morning. At the beach, towels were plentiful- sometimes they ran out and you had to wait a bit for a refill, but they never ran out of towels. Our other shout out would be to the guards at the front gate. We left the hotel every day to venture out and they made sure we knew they knew where we were going and were ok.A big thank you to the management of Sandy Haven who, on my wife's birthday did something extremely special for her, (don't want to give it away to others in case you're celebrating there too). It was beyond the call and was the perfect way to end the day. THANK YOU THANK YOU for that. All in all we had a wonderful time and although we were sad to leave, we know we'll be back- and soon!!
Sandy Haven was the perfect place to start my birthday trip to Jamaica! The hotel was more up to date than other hotels in the area, the water temperature could use some help but we were okay with it. We stayed 3 nights here, 2 nights in Montego Bay and 3 nights in Ocho Rios and this was by far the best service that we received, I wish we never left! The front office staff was always so helpful! The two people who stood out the most were Pops & Duvane. Pops can help with any requests you have, he has all the connections and definitely makes sure you're safe! Definitely felt like he cared about us and wanted to make sure we were taken care of! Duvane saw my friend getting hustled by some kids on the beach and he came over and make sure we were okay and give us some advice about the peddlers on the beach. Being that we are two girls in our 20's Pops and Duvane made us feel safe and cared for they definitely went above and beyond!
