The SPA Retreat Boutique Hotel

We've stayed at many boutique hotels in Negril, but this was probably our favorite. Staff is wonderful, property is beautiful and the room was very comfortable. Aside from dining at the excellent Blue Mahon Restaurant there are many local establishments in the area that are an easy walk or short cab ride.We were able to snorkel off the short cliffs, had a very relaxing professional massage and took a private cooking lesson from Chef Shenelle. We can't wait to plan our next visit here!
Should mention up front that this was our 5th or 6th visit to the Spa Retreat. That alone is testimonial to the experiences we have enjoyed over the past 4 years. We continue to return to the Spa Retreat as we find it to be a 'sure thing' leaving no doubt our needs will be taken care of. We are a professional couple who value our 'time off' and want to ensure our 7 days away from home will be fantastic in every regard. What you read about the employees is very true, very attentive, very friendly, often addressing you by your name, taking care of your every need. We enjoy the peace and quiet this boutique hotel offers (only 18 rooms), and also appreciate that a more vibrant lifestyle exist only a few minutes away by car down on the beach. We stayed on the beach in Negril for years but as time went on we needed a more relaxed and slower paced vacation one which would leave us totally satisfied upon our departure. The Spa delivers on this expectation. From relaxing massages by the sea, chilling out by the pool with a cold beverage or the occasional snorkeling swims right at the resort we are kept busy enough however still relaxed. We go to Jamaica as the weather seems to be a slam dunk, great warm days with a sea side breeze can always be found. Swimming on the pool is great but if you prefer more of a challenge the ocean is 5 feet away with very safe and stable sea ladders taking you right to the water. Great air conditioning in the rooms yet we seem to prefer the night breeze with the windows open. That's right windows open in Jamaica ! Feeling safe is important to us, and with 24-7 security on the property we always feel safe, that along with the staff who are kind, attentive, and very honest make us feel as if we are at home. The restaurant is also excellent, the dishes are "local" and prepared by Jamaican chefs who take 'farm to table' seriously. You can taste the freshness in the food they prepare whether it be seafood, garden veg, or prepared meats. During your stay you will frequently see local farmers bringing their harvest to the resorts restaurant for that nights dinner. We have never experienced a bad meal at the Blue Mahoe, this consistency is why we return year after year. Its a sure thing !Already planning our next trip back.
I've been traveling to Jamaica since 1985, have circumnavigated the island numerous times and most always include at least a few days in Negril. My previous favorite spots were Rock House, then The Caves but have stayed in every beach hotel, cliff hotel and private villa worth mentioning. My wife and I were married in Ocho Rios back in 1989 at the incredibly opulent Rio Chico Villa. Not bragging but we know a thing or two about this island. This trip was especially meaningful as we had just gone through a month of incredible stress which included nearly losing our home and business to the record setting Thomas Fire which essentially started in Ojai, California where we live and work. After being evacuated and finally returning to our valley completely shrouded in smoke and covered with ash, we left for some intense work in Canada where we endured record low temperatures and decided to change plans and escape to Jamaica for a desperately needed break. We booked a flight to Mobay with no fixed plans other than a return to LAX eight days later. We hopped into a rental car and set off for Negril as my wife booked one night on her phone at The Spa Retreat. We had toured the property a couple years ago but this would be our first stay. We arrived late at night so really couldn't see too much of what we were in for, but settled quickly into a beautiful room and we're immediately delighted to find the most comfortable bed we ever experienced in 30 + years of visiting Jamaica! Note to every other resort in Jamaica- spend the money and buy quality bedding!!! Tourists, especially Americans, appreciate the difference! We crashed hard and slept soundly for the first time in weeks! Everything from the moment we opened our eyes was absolutely epic! Jamaican breakfast of ackee and callaloo with delicious blue mountain coffee was only a hint of what Shane and his team would produce from the magical kitchen. The beautiful salt water pool on the ocean edge, meticulously maintained and cared for by the awesome grounds crew, attentive and friendly housekeeping staff, top notch security/gatekeepers, incredible ocean front massages in the beautiful spa area, Billy and Heather at the front office - the staff here is truly second to none. We toyed with heading over to the south coast for a few days, even a trip to Port Antonio. The fact is, we were so comfortable and at home here, we just kept extending our stay and ultimately never left until our return home 8 days later! There's no cliff diving as this is located at the beginning of the west end and not very high above the water. Beautiful entrance to the sea though so ideal for a nice ocean swim or snorkel. A touch of music here and there would be nice along with a couple minor refinements to dial in the ambient experience. I'm confident these are forthcoming though as ownership seems keenly aware and on top of things. Over-all amazing property and our new favorite in Negril! Book this hotel! You will be super glad you did!
We stayed at the Spa Retreat over the holidays and loved it. All the staff are lovely - from Heather in Reception, Cliff who drove us, to all the restaurant, bar and housekeeping staff who are too numerous to name. They took the time to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and felt taken care of. It’s never over the top and we certainly had lots of peace and quiet. The pool is perfect as it the view. We stayed in a seaside cottage which was spacious and very comfortable. We loved having our own veranda to watch the sunsets from. The restaurant is good, we had breakfast everyday, lunch twice and dinner once. All were quite good. We enjoyed walking to 3 Dives for jerk, Canoe for dinner and we took a cab to Murphy’s for lobster which was wonderful. This is a lovely spot where you can totally relax!
This was a dream vacation. Straight on the sea, you could jump and start snorkeling. The restaurant offers amazing vegetarian selection. The staff is very helpful and service oriented. We will visit them again. The location of the hotel is amazing.
