Our Opinion

It's a large sized property with beautiful grounds. The ocean has calm, shallow waters and a reef with good snorkeling is located nearby. Lots of choices for a la carte dinners, the Steakhouse is very good and don't miss the Jerk Hut for lunch. Junior suites in deluxe wing are beautiful and very spacious. The Riu Ocho Rios is truly a great resort for all; families, couples and singles. A definite recommend!

Never Again

NEVER AGAIN!! There was ants in the dining room. Serving old or rotten food. Housekeeping was rude and unhelpful. They cleaned the room but it took all day literally to get towels. Then the towels were old brown towels probably from the 90s. They need to upgrade that resort ASAP. There was a ROACH in my room on the last night and course now we can't sleep because ain't no telling where it came from. Cats fighting (literally the animal) 5am so loud it woke us out of our sleep. The pool closed at 6pm. This trip was horrible although we made the best out of it.

Our Trip was Paradise thanks to Riu Ocho Rios Resort

First please let me start of by saying this. Those that left negative reviews for this resort must have been staying at a different hotel. We found none of that, My husband and I booked a week here in anticipation of our 20th Wedding Anniversary celebration. Friends had been here before and gave it rave reviews. They were right!Upon arriving with Ken's Taxi/Wheelchair service, as I have mobility problems, we were greeted right away at the front desk and given our room within minutes. The desk staff were very quick and professional and welcoming. We weren't greeted at the front with a rum cocktail, but as I gazed over at them a young man came out and asked me if I'd like one and gave me a lovely, refreshing drink with a big smile. We were given an Standard ocean front view room on the second floor over looking the middle section of the resort. The view was beautiful but the bed was not comfortable at all for my spinal condition and I could not step up into the tub/shower, so after a painful night trying to sleep we called the front desk and were immediately upgraded to a deluxe Garden View on the bottom floor which the front desk assured me would be easier for me to manipulate with a wheelchair, they were right and the walkin shower was perfect, ,they even gave me a shower chair to sit on. The bed was soft and perfect, the pillows soft and plentiful and the bedding was changed every day. Our room came with Wifi though I had already requested it in our previous room and it worked perfectly. Plenty of fluffy towels and lots of alcohol/water/soft drinks in our room bar. The view I thought would be a disappointment but boy was I wrong. The view was gorgeous. The grounds right in front of us were breathtaking and we could still see the sea. We actually preferred the Garden View as we were so close to everything it meant less pushing my wheelchair for my husband. It was perfect! The housekeeping staff of which I must mention Miss Norma were incredible. She was incredible! I never met a sweeter, kinder person in my life. When she learned it was our 20th anniversary she went out of her way to leave us beautiful towel arrangements with fresh flowers in them every day for us! ANYTHING we needed, she made sure we were comfortable. She is a credit to the resort and I made a friend, I miss her morning chats and her lovely smile. She made us feel like we were at home. All the staff everywhere we went gave us a "good morning, good afternoon, how are you?" and it wasn't forced, it was genuine, they were genuinely happy to make us happy and that is worth a fortune. They are a very busy staff, always cleaning, replenishing your food, making sure the floors are dry and safe after a rain. Trust me these people work very hard for their clients! As for claims of mold? I saw none, our rooms, pools, eating areas were spotless. Yes there are orange cones here and there but only where water has been and the staff are quick to mop it up. I didn't see cracked pool tiles, not one. I saw only one chipped ceramic tile in the whole resort and we covered every inch of it. They were repainting the hotel when we were there and there are signs of constant upgrading. The entertainment was FANTASTIC and I must mention the Silver Birds and the "History of Jamaican Music" nights as my favourite. They are incredible and we enjoyed them immensely. Every night there is something wonderful to see and music during the day, all sorts of activities for young and old. We found the pool areas very clean at all times. The beach? Well what can I say except they are pristine! The most beautiful, clean, clear heavenly waters I have ever swam in anywhere. The beach area had plenty of loungers at all times, it was very clean and if you don't go to the Jerk Hut then you are really missing something. OH MY it was SO good! The best jerk on the resort quite frankly. There was an abundance of incredible food with specials every night. The food was plentiful, fresh, well cooked and TONS of it. Every type of food you can ask for and then some. I tasted delicious Jamaican food while my American husband wasn't quite as adventurous. His loss lol. I tried everything and LOVED the ackee and saltfish, the oxtail, the curried goat and of course the delicious Jamaican Patties. Each day was a culinary adventure I looked forward to. The chefs did not disappoint. The serving staff at the restaurants, bent over backwards to make sure we always had everything we needed. There was no wait at all for our delicious pots of Blue Mountain coffee, the best in the world. We really miss that coffee! I could see the people on the pier at the hotel next door, each day looking longingly at all the fun we all were having at Riu while they seemed to have nothing to do over there. Swimming in the beautiful sea each day was heaven on earth. Floating, looking up at the gorgeous Jamaican mountains in the distance, smelling the sweet air that invigorates you like nowhere else on earth was just what my body and spirit needed. There is no place anywhere on the planet as beautiful as Jamaica to me and the staff and the Riu Ocho Rios resort is where we will ALWAYS stay when we come back to Jamaica. It is a five star in my opinion as we were treated like royalty and I cried when I had to leave my "friends" I met at your establishment. Miss Norma in housekeeping is FABULOUS!!!, Carrie-Ann in St. Ann's restaurant with her constant pots of coffee always ready for us, Kamar (sp?) in the bar during entertainment night who makes a great Bob Marley drink, the porters at the front who were so helpful with my wheelchair, they really stood out to us as the kind who go above and beyond what their job requires them to do. They really like what they do and they take much pride in it and it shows. Miss Norma we miss you, we really do. You mothered us and you were so kind and sweet. We will certainly never forget you above all the rest. Bless you. So thank you to everyone at the Riu, thank you for giving us a trip of a lifetime filled with wonderful memories to last a lifetime. Not Overly Impressed

I came to this hotel for the first time 10 years ago and from my first impression it looked exactly the same. They have done an amazing job maintaining this hotel. Very pleased. The first time I came here was for my wedding and we stayed in the deluxe suites and loved it. This time we stayed in the junior suites and I wasn’t overly impressed. We had issues with the cable in the room (not that we in there much). The drink dispenser was a plus but for the amount you are paying for I felt that I wanted a bit more from the accommodations. Rooms were well maintained and clean.The views were superb. The beach was nice. The jerk chicken hut was great. The food in the St Ann’s buffet was good. I expected more flavour. Service all around was great and pleasant but not memorable.Jamaica is always amazing but my visit this time left me to wonder what other hotels could I explore.

Gorgeous View but Hotel needs Improving

I have read the reviews and whilst I agree with some of them I don't agree with all. I can only go with our own experience which was that our room was perfectly OK but the bed cover and blanket that they provide they should be ashamed of themselves, it was fit for the bin. Also some of the hand towels were a bit threadbare and need replacing. The fridge is supposed to be replenished every two days but this was not always the case and we did chase them on a couple of occasions and they did provide us with more. The mattress they provide was not as hard as our own but we had good sleeps. The lightshade in our room was torn and the soap dispenser was off the wall when we arrived and had not been fixed when we left. I know that people staying at the hotel had damp/musty problems in their rooms but we did not find this. The only sewage smell we had was by the ground floor lift of the second building. The lifts are old and hot as people have said but you are only in their short time. The TV was old but we are on holiday and we don't tend to watch TV except for the news but it does date the room. We found the food and drink good and there is a variety for everyone. All the staff that we came into contact with were extremely helpful and very friendly. The beach was gorgeous. The only downside is that there are no toilets on the beach so you have to go into the main hotel or into the restaurant. If you don't like the smell of the wacky baccy which is smoked then certainly avoid the pool area. The chairs/sofas that are in the lobby area need to be replaced as they are old and some of the seat covers were coming apart. We had a great time at the hotel but would I go back to this particular hotel - no - not unless they continue to make improvements.

Jamaica's Version of the old Mt. Airy Lodge of the Poconos

The highlight of my visit was the lobby - the pictures of the lobby view fools you. The accommodations are awful. Once you leave the lobby and the manicured courtyard - you enter a heated, draconian mildew palace awaits. If you can survive the elevator ride to the top floor, you may be able to breath again. If you do make it out of the elevator alive, be sure to suck in as much clean air as possible, because the mildew in the room is sure to cause all sorts of breathing ailments before you leave to go back home. The food is a little below average - but you have to eat to live, so you deal with it. The service from the employees vary and the entertainment is passable. Don't expect to feel comfortable in your room if it rains or at any other time for that matter, because the old 1990's era TV has so much static that you can barely see a picture. That's IF the cable is working. The towels and washcloth feel as though you are using sandpaper. By the way, that is IF your heavy, old wooden door allows you to enter the room without experiencing a heat stroke.Just pitiful all the way around. All you are paying for is a beautiful view of the beach from the lobby.
