Our Opinion

It's a large sized property with beautiful grounds. The ocean has calm, shallow waters and a reef with good snorkeling is located nearby. Lots of choices for a la carte dinners, the Steakhouse is very good and don't miss the Jerk Hut for lunch. Junior suites in deluxe wing are beautiful and very spacious. The Riu Ocho Rios is truly a great resort for all; families, couples and singles. A definite recommend!

Just minutes from town, yet nicely removed from the hub-bub, the RIU Ocho Rios is located on a breathtaking beach and surrounded by Ocho Rios famous rainforests and spectacular waterfalls. Enjoy outstanding international fine dining, get pampered at our Spa, or revel in the Caribbean sunshine with authentic tropical atmosphere and entertainment. Riu Ocho Rios will ultimately satisfy all your Caribbean desires.

Location: Directly on 7 miles of beach, on Mamie Bay in Ocho Rios, 90 min from the airport.

2 Star hotel with 5 Star price tag.. beware not what is advertised.....

Just got back from Club Hotel Rui which is advertised as Platinum standard and service I wood rate it as old Tin myself. This as been the worst holiday of our life and that is no exaggeration! We booked a Deluxe room close to all amenities because of my partner has a disability. When we arrived we were given a room at the far end of the Hotel room 1250 to be exact, when we entered the room we noticed a strong smell of damp!! In fact there was damp spores all over the walls I have pictures of the room. When we reported this we were offered the option of viewing 3 other rooms. so I found myself running around the hotel at 4.00pm trying to find a room suitable for us to use. The room numbers were 1404, 1215, 1244. Frankly these rooms were in a worse condition than 1250. So we stayed in 1250 and turned of the air conditioning to try and remove the damp smell after a few days everything we had was damp and began to smell like the room. We complained to our rep Pauline who admitted that the rooms were damp but said there was nothing she could do but advised us to leave the air conditioning on. As it was the Jamaican humidity (which was rubbish) We had continuous problems with the door key card which would and then would not work until day five when the door lock gave up all together! Of course we were offered another room but I pleaded with the receptionist that majority of the rooms were of a poor standard she told me there was nothing that could be done and I had to choose one, but then she politely said that the master suites were in good condition so I had no choice but to upgrade to one of those for an extra £200 pounds. One our first night in our new room I was woken at 2.am by my partner who was covered in tiny spiders we videod them as evidence. The next morning I told reception and they sent a maid with some spray to spray the room which made it inhabitable for most of the day, that night we had cockroaches in the bedside draws and again I complained to the rep showing her the pictures I took of them. I could not believe that it was day 6 day and we still had not settled down to our holiday. We were infested with spiders again so I demanded that the rep move us she said she could not. I demanded again that we be moved to another hotel and was told it could not be done, she asked us to wait awhile while she went to see the manager and to my surprise she came back about 10 minutes later and said they are throwing you out of the room. You can have your upgrade fee but they are going to charge me for the 2 nights I stayed in there. So I spoke to the supervisor myself who said look if you don't like the room you need to leave it. In the end we had to bribe a maid to get us a tin of insect spray and spray the room ourselves before we went out. Some days there would be no hot water, there was even a couple of mornings that there was no water at all. the food was poor especially for a platinum service and the other restaurants are hit and miss affair because you never know when they are open. The other danger I must mention is the floors are so slippy that you have to tread slowly for fear of slipping. literally I could not wait to get out of there. I see they are still offering the hotel as a five star with a platinum service rating. I am currently seeking legal advice against my travel agent with the hope of recouping some of the cost for this shambolic holiday to the CLUB HOTEL RIU....

Not what I remember Resort

Both my husband and myself have been to this resort in previous years and had enjoyed exceptional service, food, people, grounds, etc.Hence, this is the reason I recommended going back with friends this year! WHAT A MISTAKE!!!We upgraded our package to premium and expected the services listed in Riu website once we got there!! This was not money well spent!!Restaurants were closed most of the time, and times were not listed on the billboards correctly outside of each restauranWe had no exclusive use of the premium beach, again listed. Trouble getting towels, especially washcloths each day. Our mini fridge was stocked every other day but only on per use basis. Soft drinks/water that was half finished were put back in our fridge with no new stock replenished. We made it an adventure to get ice, as the machines were located on the far side of the first and third floors to where our beachfront junior suite was!! The second floorService of the staff needs improvement, with an exception of very few staff! This is now a non-smoking resort, but many still smoke, myself included especially when there's a drink in my handbut no designated area nor ashtrays providedJamaica remains special in my heart and always will, but Riu Ocho Rios has broken my heartTime to update and rethink!! It was in my opinion a 4-4.5 star resort once, but now3-3.5I will not recommend this resort in the future to anyone!!Buyer beware

Not kid friendly room smelled terrible

We just got back from what we were hoping to be our dream vacation. First of all the pools close at 6pm. Leaving nothing for the children to do after 6. The entertainment in the early night defiantly wasn’t kid friendly. It was geared more for the mature crowd. Our room smelt very musty. Now our clothes that we took on the trip have a terrible smell. I have washed them several times and had them air outside. And, they still smell. The box spring the bottom part of the bed was bare. No sheet no bed skirt nothing. I have never stayed in a resort, hotel, or motel that has a part of the bed not covered. The food wasn’t good. The staff if you wanted to wait for something special prepared in the buffet was always looking for a tip. They seemed as if they were doing you a huge favor to cook the item you requested. We have traveled to Jamaica before and stayed at a different resort. I wouldn’t recommend this resort.

Thank you Riu for another great stay!

Third visit in as many years and once again was not disappointed. Stayed in ocean front in deluxe wing which had a beautiful view of the Caribbean, and close enough to enjoy listening to the waves on the beach each night. Close enough to pool, food, and entertainment, but seems distant from the main crowd. Room was clean, no mold or odors (as many others seem to complain about), and housekeeping took great care of it daily. Drinks were restocked adequately though not daily. On the night of the weekly beach party, expect a lot of noise till 11pm (so you might as well join it!)Front desk staff was friendly and quick at check in, and checked up on us during our stay. Really appreciated the friendly staff all over the resort who often go out of their way to stop and talk, or simply ask how your stay is going. They really make the difference, especially the entertainers roaming the beach and pool areas. Food was plentiful at all hours of the day but average at best. No worries though, you will find something you like. Our favorite was seafood night in the main dining area and the jerk chicken hut on the beach. Sir John/Richard restaurants are good but expect a 2-3 hour dinner. Only complaint was the Japanese restaurant never seemed to be opened so unable to try it out. Beach was beautiful and clean. Plenty of shade from the palm trees and lots of lounge chairs. Staff takes great care with cleaning it each morning and throughout the day. Water was warm and the snorkeling out on the reef was great. Seen many fish, a spotted eel, and squid. Depending on what you are looking for, there are two large pool areas, not excellent to hang out at. One is quiet with an infinity pool, the other is noisy and more for the rowdy crowd and entertainment. Lots of places to lounge either in or out of the pool, sun or shade. Both pools also have swim up bars. Towels are available but you need a card to get them. Don’t lose them or you may be hit with a $35 charge at check out. We didn’t bring kids, but resort seems a safe enough place and lots for them to do, and we noticed staff giving them extra attention. There’s a water sports desk on the beach with paddle boats, sail boats, and paddle boards. Think you can also rent snorkel gear and day trips here, but we only used it for scuba diving. Buyer Beware: make sure you get everything in writing and a receipt. Heard complaint from a fellow guest about them demanding more money after using their services. Also, not sure how much you can trust Scuba Caribe personnel peddling on the beach.
