It's a large sized property with beautiful grounds. The ocean has calm, shallow waters and a reef with good snorkeling is located nearby. Lots of choices for a la carte dinners, the Steakhouse is very good and don't miss the Jerk Hut for lunch. Junior suites in deluxe wing are beautiful and very spacious. The Riu Ocho Rios is truly a great resort for all; families, couples and singles. A definite recommend!
Just minutes from town, yet nicely removed from the hub-bub, the RIU Ocho Rios is located on a breathtaking beach and surrounded by Ocho Rios famous rainforests and spectacular waterfalls. Enjoy outstanding international fine dining, get pampered at our Spa, or revel in the Caribbean sunshine with authentic tropical atmosphere and entertainment. Riu Ocho Rios will ultimately satisfy all your Caribbean desires.
Location: Directly on 7 miles of beach, on Mamie Bay in Ocho Rios, 90 min from the airport.
We recently stayed at the hotel for a vacation and as a family we where disappointed with the resort.Good Points :The rooms are clean if a little dated. The A/C worked fine. The beach is lovely and there are enough beds to go around. The Japanese restaurant is the best place to eat although the service is disorganised.Bad Points :A lot of the staff are disinterested, arrogant or plain rude. The swimming pools are dirty. No tea or coffee making facilities in the rooms. The evening entertainment is very loud, and all the bars are within 10m of the stage area, meaning there's nowhere else to sit if you want a quite night.During the weekend the hotel seems to be full of locals on a "Day pass" ticket getting rowdy and trying to chat up the guests. The majority of the restaurants serve the same food, which you have to queue for. It's very noisy during the night, with drunk guests finding there way back to their rooms at 3am shouting at the top of their voices. We also saw groups of middle aged Americans drinking all day then fighting and vomiting in the pool - not what you want at a family hotel!Only two wifi connections per room, isn't acceptable if there are 3 people staying there. I called reception and mentioned this only to be told to use the "Ordinary" WiFi, by an impatient receptionist - we still could only use 2 devices. We also heard stories of people's room safes being broken into, with the perpetrators only taking small amounts of money so it's not as easily noticed by the guest. If you're thinking of staying here you may enjoy it, it just depends on your expectations, if you like average food and rude staff in a beautiful setting it maybe for you, just don't pay extra for the Deluxe Wing, as apart from the two extra restaurants (that serve the largely same food as the others) it's not worth the extra money, the pool in the deluxe area is full of guests who should only be in the standard area of the hotel, the staff on duty don't care anyway.Compared to other Riu hotels we've stayed at the ClubHotel Ocho Rios comes a poor second. Not a 5 star hotel, 3.5 stars at best.
I booked directly with them and from the start I knew it would be a questionable experience. We were first booked in an old room (I believe the rooms beginning with 2 are in the old non-deluxe wing, while the 1's are in the deluxe area) The AC didn't work and the beds were ancient. The refrigerator was broken, as was the ice machine on our floor. If you don't book deluxe, you don't get more than a tiny bar of soap for toiletries. I spent 4 days in vain trying to get a washcloth. We did get moved to the deluxe wing eventually and it was much much nicer. If that had been my experience from the beginning I would have been fine. But deluxe is sort of standard for me - the rooms do have a small sofa, which is nice but essentially they are rooms with 2 queen beds right next to each other ( a bit awkward) with air con and toiletries. They did a great job with the vow renewal ceremony, which was beautiful on the beach. The food was so-so. Maybe I am spoiled from Las Vegas buffets, but I found a lot of it tasteless. Thank goodness for the jerk hut and the beef patties in the Plantation and Mammee Bay restaurants. Keep in mind that the hallways are outdoors, and very lengthy so be prepared for a bit of a hot walk. The elevators are not ventilated and are saunas in the summer heat. If you have a handicapped person with you (as we did), you have to go to the nurse's office and put down a $250 cash deposit to rent a wheel chair for $30/day. And you will need it for the sprawling resort. WiFi is included but only for 2 devices per room, which presented a problem for us as we were 3. Overall, it was okay. But I"m not very keen to return to this resort. I probably won't go to any RIU's after this if I can help it.
This was my second time staying at this hotel. The first time I wasn't too keen and the second time confirmed I would not go back.Check in is very easy as you arrive someone is waiting for you as they are aware when you will be arriving (we booked as a package through Thompson). I was there for my sisters wedding and I guess it was great not having to think about what to eat for breakfast. Breakfast is very nice lots of choice and taste nice. Lunch and dinner and all the restaurants are nasty!!! I went to kfc most of the time or to families house. The workers are laidback and the women will make comments (assuming you cannot understand them, but I can). The men workers are very friendly and funny. However, the bar staff are different the women are friendly and the men are standoffish towards English guests (I think this is because the lack of tips). The rooms smell damp!! And are not the nicest. The best thing for me is the bar in room (which is filled every other day). Tip* fill your bottles up from your room and being them to the street party your may go to.They have entertainment every night which is very enjoyable. Kids club is not good for children aged 6 and over. My aunt went to the spa to fix her nails and it cost an arm and a leg.Overall, the drinks, breakfast, being in Jamaica, entertainment and beach is why I would consider. But I can find that in a hotel that is not damp.
Our family just got back from this hotel. Overall the buffet was one of the best buffets I have ever been to. The down side to this hotel would be that there are exclusive restaurants that you can not go to unless you are in the dulux wing.. This is very disturbing. Also, the larger pool, where most of the activities happen seemed to be dirty. Scum usually floating around in the corners.... Other than these two things, this was a great resort.
I spend the day at Riu and attended my friends wedding in the afternoon. The facility is good with lots of amenities. The food is ok but I prefer to get food outside the resort. Riu hosted the wedding and everything went smooth and the arrangement was done well. The only point of improvement I saw was the arrangement of the buffet foods. The layout was not ideas so it slows down people trying to get food.
