It's a large sized property with beautiful grounds. The ocean has calm, shallow waters and a reef with good snorkeling is located nearby. Lots of choices for a la carte dinners, the Steakhouse is very good and don't miss the Jerk Hut for lunch. Junior suites in deluxe wing are beautiful and very spacious. The Riu Ocho Rios is truly a great resort for all; families, couples and singles. A definite recommend!
Just minutes from town, yet nicely removed from the hub-bub, the RIU Ocho Rios is located on a breathtaking beach and surrounded by Ocho Rios famous rainforests and spectacular waterfalls. Enjoy outstanding international fine dining, get pampered at our Spa, or revel in the Caribbean sunshine with authentic tropical atmosphere and entertainment. Riu Ocho Rios will ultimately satisfy all your Caribbean desires.
Location: Directly on 7 miles of beach, on Mamie Bay in Ocho Rios, 90 min from the airport.
I stayed at Club Hotel Riu Ocho Rios for 2 weeks 28th August - 12th September 2017, as it being my first trip to Jamaica I was abit worried from things I had heard about leaving the hotel etc. But I can honestly say not once was me and my friend as 2 young girls on a holiday alone we was not harassed once, nor was we ever feeling unsafe in or out of the hotel. We enjoyed trips to: • Dunn's river falls via the party boat on the hotel beach• Hoov's horse riding booked through the Thomson team in hotel reception• Nine Mile trip also booked through the Thomson team. The food daily was changed to different themes but ALWAYS suited and catered for all types of eaters whether it was adventurous, plain/simple or fussy.. either way food was always great (some but very little wasn't as seasoned as expected BUT that was also catered for children's needs aswell so was expected). The maid's cleaned our room daily with fresh sheets and towels, and was always friendly. We had our fridge of fizzy drinks, beers and alcohol dispensers topped up daily to every 2 days which was great and refreshing after a long hard day around the pool soaking up the sun! (Which was also all free of charge).Breakfast was American style (bacon, eggs, hash browns, Ackee salt fish, toast, cereals etc.Lunch had a variety but we ALWAYS found ourselves at the jerk hut on the beach which I can honestly say was out of this world. It wasn't spicey but VERY flavourful with a optional sweet jerk sauce or spicey for the hot food lovers!Dinner was great, different range everyday and also a'la cart's which you obviously had to get there early for but we didn't need to attend there as the food was always above standards in the normal buffet restaurant.Daily we got new towels to take to the pool or the beach which we handed in of a evening and got new ones with our pool cards in the morning.Pool bar played excellent music, staff was always friendly and was over generous with the amounts of rum they gave which was amazing! Animation staff was lovely, friendly and very entertaining without being too overpowering. We loved Kelly, Ben Ten, Bird man, Chad and the rest!!!Monday we loved the all white beach party, during the week entertainment on stage was good daily but my favourite night was a Thursday which showed the different stages of how Jamaican music developed over the years, thankfully I got to see that show twice during my trip! Every night except Mondays they have the Pacha nightclub which starts at 11pm - 2am which played a wide range of music with cool air conditioning and a lovely atmosphere.... certain nights wasn't as lively as others but that was through no fault of the hotels it was the holiday makers but once it got abit more busy (around midnight) we didn't want it to end. We went on a few trips out of the hotel without any tour guides but booked return taxi's from the hotel reception they was always friendly, informative on surrounding area's and made sure we got to and from our destination back to hotel safely (was always happy to wait around for us until we was ready to come back which as 2 young girls alone we found very good as we felt safe at all times). Food in the 24hour restaurant was okay, could've been more but as it was a 24hr I didn't expect it. Would love to of had chips or nacho's without having to walk to the other bar but that isn't a complaint it could just be an improvement.Overall I have had an amazing holiday, I felt safe, the hotel was always clean, staff always happy to help, weather amazing and food out of this world. I am so unhappy to be home, I'm already looking forward to booking my trip back next summer.. 2 weeks just wasn't long enough!!!!
I just realized I never wrote my review about this stellar property. My girlfriend and I had a 2 week stay at this property at end of August 2015 (not August 2017 as is listed). Before I begin, It took forever to get to this resort from the airport (2 hours or more). This was completely my fault as I decided to just "wing" the transportation at the airport and was placed in a mid-sized van/bus type vehicle with about 15 or so other people (including a few loud and rude guests from Detroit who I thought were going to get into a scuffle at times with other passengers) that had to stop at each resort on the way to drop off all the other guests as the Riu was the last stop. Don't make that mistake, book your transportation ahead of time, preferably a private transfer if you can. Thankfully on the way back me and my girlfriend had a great, brand new charter bus all to ourselves that got us to the airport on time. Now on to the resort, check in was fast and easy. We were lucky to immediately be upgraded to the premier wing of the hotel which is quieter, cleaner, and has way better pools then the standard side. The room was nice and clean and we had no issues with anything. The room minibar was fully stocked with Appleton liquors and plenty of it! The food was pretty good with a ton of selection. I've had better only at some higher end resorts in D.R.The layout of this resort is phenomenal! You can grab lunch at the lunch time buffet (mammee) and have the most beautiful views of the sea and ocean. Almost everywhere you eat outside at either buffet you can have these picturesque views, but the lunch buffet area sits a little higher up then the breakfast/dinner buffet and closer to the ocean and it was my absolute favorite. The premier area pools are excellent and very clean. My favorite was the infinity pool, it's large and perfect for relaxing or playing around. But above everything else this resort sits on Mammee bay. I've traveled in the Caribbean to Punta Cana, La Romana, Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Rico, etc...As well as Europe and South America and the beach and oceanfront this RIU is EASILY my absolute favorite. Have you ever been to other Caribbean resorts where the pictures show this pristine bright blue water and clean tan/white sand? Then you get there and realize the water is more greenish then blue, and has sargassum and other vegetation not just on the sand but floating all for the first 20 feet of the water, aka the part you can just easily lay in or sit in and just relax? NOT HERE!!!Let me repeat, during the 2015 sargassum invasion that hit pretty much everywhere, I was here for 2 weeks and didn't even know there was a sargassum problem because the water was bright and blue, and clear as the water you drink up for the first few meters before the bright beautiful blue water. It was so clean that you could easily see the little silverish colored fish and if you had any remnants of food on you they would jump at it and take it away if you let them.I'm a total beach bum (why fly thousands of miles to sit in a chlorinated pool?) and this beach has somewhat spoiled me to other locations. I have yet to find a beach with clean water like this in Dominican Republic, no matter the month or season, no matter the Atlantic waters of Bavaro Beach/Punta Cana or the Caribbean waters of Bayahibe. (The only thing that came close to this was a tiny island off the coast of Venezuela that was a 20 minute boat ride.) Also the water was calm, the sand soft, clean and bright. There is not a ton of beachfront, (wider then it is long) but never had an issue with space. No matter a thunderstorm out in the ocean, the water never became murky and never had any seaweed in the 2 weeks we were there. If even small amounts of seaweed is present my girlfriend will make our beach day a pool day and she spent just as much time in the ocean as I did... I can only imagine how nice the beaches in Negril are because no one even talks about the beauty of this one.The only negative aspects on the resort we faced were the mosquitoes at times (dinner time for us) made sitting outside at the dinner buffet a nuisance. I assume we could have slathered on more deet to combat this. No issue with them during the morning/lunch hours. Also I wouldn't book the standard side of the resorts as it was too rowdy and it took forever to get drinks from the poolside bars (the poolside bars on the standard side also smelled of spilled beer and alcohol). You'll experience none of that on the premium side. I'd only book premium here based on those experiences. The overnight food area is pretty depressing it's in a musty arcade room and has popcorn, nachos and a few mushy cheese sandwiches. There is definitely room for improvement in that aspect. Also venturing in downtown Ocho Rios is safe (via taxi), but stick to the shopping mall areas as the sellers park across the street is just too annoying, even if you, like us had intentions to buy stuff from the individual vendors just be prepared for the most aggressive, somewhat rude, downright pushy experience. We ended up buying something from the park vendors but it was so annoying and time consuming that we decided to go back to the shopping mall area across the street.
I have just got home from a 2 week stay in ClubHotel Riu & I have to say I already have the holiday blues. From the minute I checked in I knew we had chosen the right hotel. The staff were very good & attentive. All of the wait staff were so polite & would go out of their way to help in any way that they could. The maids were very good and the room always looked lovely & clean once they had been - my only complaint for this would be sometimes we would be out all day & come back to find the maid just entering our room. Other then that there were no complaints. We always had clean towels & our fridge was always stocked with drinks as were the litre bottles of booze on the optics. Our room was a nice size & we had 2 double beds - the bathroom equipped with 2 sinks. The aircon worked rather well - sometimes too well, we had to get up and turn it off some evenings. Our Balcony was rather big (I noticed we had a bigger balcony then most people). The view was lovely, we could see the sea, the pool & the area where many weddings took place. We had the pleasure of watching a few of these from the balcony. We went on a boat trip to the Dunns River with scuba caribe - they are based in the hotel grounds. I have to say the guys on the boat were brilliant, one of them went Snorkelling over the coral reefs with us (unfortunately I can't remember his name) but he was very good and informative. He even gave me a seashell from the bottom of the coral reef as a memento. I used the pedal boat's that they supply one afternoon - these were free to use for hotel guests. There were life guards at the pool & the beach. All of them were very good and attentive. The bar staff were brilliant - the pool bar staff kept us very entertained when sitting there. O'Neil was hilarious and always had us smiling & laughing when sitting at the Dunns River bar - have to say we were always left a little disappointed when he wasn't in.The food was lovely - a few things needed more seasoning but I can't really complain. The Jerk Hut & the crazy Jerk Man were definitely a highlight of the holiday, I'm missing this place/food already! The entertainment staff were 2nd to none! All of them went out of their way to ensure we were enjoying ourselves. Chad, Jerry, Kelly, Birdman, Turbo & Ricarddo defiantly brightened everyday for us, although I have to say Ben Ten was my favourite! Always smiling & I was even sang to by him, he was always trying to get me to dance. This entertainment team always put on a good show and tried to get everyone involved but weren't too pushy with trying to get people to join in. The nightclub was ok - but I think every night in there was different. Some nights were busier then others but that's no fault of the hotel - this is down to the guests on site. The DJ was good and played a wide range of music. I've already recommended this hotel to loads of people and will definitely be returning to the hotel in the future. Thank you for a lovely & enjoyable stay!
I was attending my sister's Vow renewal and our stay was from 9.2.17-9.9.17. Pros: Entertainment staff were fantastic! They work hard all day and night and never stop smiling. I've been in hospitality management for over 10 years and I have not experienced anything like I did from Jerry, Chad, George and Squidward. Not only were they charismatic and fun, they remembered our names after the first day. Jerry would stop in the hallway/beach and come talk to us using our name. This happened every day! They took pictures, danced with the kids and went above and beyond every time. Our last night there, Squidward asked when we were leaving. We said 9:00am and he said he started at 9:30 but would come in early to say goodbye. Most times, that would be understandable if he did not because he has to work 14 hours. As we were getting on the shuttle, who showed up? Squidward and gave us all hugs to say goodbye. We are forever grateful for those four especially as they made our trip unforgettable. I hope this message gets back to them because they deserve all the credit in the world for representing the RIU in the highest regard. The rest of the team was great, but we did not connect with them like we did these four. If I could hire them and bring them to the states I would. They have a bright future in anything they do. ** Jerk chicken hut was great **beautiful ocean beaches**pools were fun and big**housekeeping did a great job** resort offered a discounted rate as our entire group was forced to stay 2-6 extra days due to Hurricane IrmaCons:**Rooms too dated** No room should have 2 beds literally pushed together to make 1 big bed. There is still a crease in the middle. Invest in queen and king beds please. **rooms were musty and dated**free mini bar was only stocked every other day. If paying for all inclusive, it should be up to the guest discretion**No resort should have actual Keys (like a gas station) to get into a room. Electronic key entry should be a standard. The last thing I want to do on vacation is carry a set of keys with me everywhere and then be told I'd be charged if I lose them. I had a great time, but again thanks to the 4 employees previously mentioned. Ive been to Jamaica twice and my next time down I would only consider staying here if i knew they would be on staff still. It's a fine place, but needs some more attention to detail to become a destination.
We are currently staying here.. The good points.. beautiful gardens with a small pool that contains fish and turtles..Great pool and pool bar...Beautiful beach with plenty of loungers so no need to get up at silly o'clock to reserve one.Impressive hotel that's kept clean and tidy at all times.. Bar staff are amazing..Waiters/waitresses work tirelessly in some extreme heat. Entertainment is what you expect from an all inclusive, if you're here for 2 weeks then it's repetitive.. big thanks to Rocky and his team who have made our holiday memorable..Only 1 bad point.. food is not the same high standard as the Riu Montego bay..Not much selection and the various restaurants you can choose to eat in is much the same. Bland and cold in one and the steak not cooked properly in another..This won't put me off returning to this hotel, will come back especially for the beach alone.
