It's a large sized property with beautiful grounds. The ocean has calm, shallow waters and a reef with good snorkeling is located nearby. Lots of choices for a la carte dinners, the Steakhouse is very good and don't miss the Jerk Hut for lunch. Junior suites in deluxe wing are beautiful and very spacious. The Riu Ocho Rios is truly a great resort for all; families, couples and singles. A definite recommend!
Just minutes from town, yet nicely removed from the hub-bub, the RIU Ocho Rios is located on a breathtaking beach and surrounded by Ocho Rios famous rainforests and spectacular waterfalls. Enjoy outstanding international fine dining, get pampered at our Spa, or revel in the Caribbean sunshine with authentic tropical atmosphere and entertainment. Riu Ocho Rios will ultimately satisfy all your Caribbean desires.
Location: Directly on 7 miles of beach, on Mamie Bay in Ocho Rios, 90 min from the airport.
My husband and I love Riu Resorts and I must say we were very disappointed in the service and the rude staff at this particular resort. Everything was perfect except for the staff. The only time we were waited on was in the restaurants and it was very little and very poor. At the beach, pool and bars we had to get up to order our drinks and wait for them as no one was available to deliver to your table or chair. The only time someone came to the table was to pick up the empty glasses. Additionally, bartenders were very rude and acted like we were disturbing their personal time when asking for a drink. Several times we had staff ask for tips and one member asked me to sneak her food. I am also guessing that staff members bring their children to work as I witnessed many times the children running up to staff members asking permission to leave the room or to go swimming. The children running around the resort were locals and knew staff members well as they joked around and at times were disciplined by a staff member. It was a different dynamic then any resort I have been in. Maybe it's the culture as it is a bit laid back. Besides the poor service, our excursions and the entertainment was top notch. The pool and beach activities were fantastic and the entertainment staff was fun and kind.I did hear from people on the plane that the Riu Palace on the other side of the island was great and no complaints. So I am guessing we stayed at the wrong Riu.
The beach and setting are gorgeous, and the food and rooms were ok. But my God the musical entertainment during the day by the pools and during the evening is horrendous. It's very much club/dance music, played so loud that the only peace is on the beach (or your room!). The three bars that are open during the evening are all in the same area, near the stage and dance floor, so there is nowhere to chill out. It would be nice if the hotel could allocate a space (one of the a la carte restaurants possibly?) as somewhere for older guests to go and have a drink in peace. The 'adult' pool was full of loud, brash, drunk, younger people that had no consideration for other guests, and the pool was filthy with scum near the steps (presumably from spilt drinks). It was our first time in Jamaica, and we didn't really feel safe leaving the hotel. We went to Ocho Rios on a shopping trip, but it was an absolute dump - I was very surprised that it is a cruise destination.
We recently visited Riu Ocho Rios from April 9th-16th celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary. Overall, it was a nice resort but not one I see us visiting again in the future. We booked an oceanview room and ended up paying to upgrade to an oceanfront room after the first night. The view was truthfully similar in the two rooms but the 1st room smelled TERRIBLE (musty, moldy, basement smell). The TV made a terrible crackling noise on every channel and the mini fridge wasn't working. I went to the front desk to request to be moved to another room and was told there was nothing available. I ended up paying for the 'better' room mainly because staying in the room we were assigned was impossible (so smelly). The second room was fine though. Clean, nice view, and a working mini fridge! The bed in both rooms was hard, lumpy, and saggy all at once though. The resort as a whole was good. They could definitely use more clean-up staff though. The beach became pretty disgusting once they opened the Jerk Hut. People left their bones all around and the pigeons had no fear! Seeing a pigeons fight over chicken bones kind of ruins the relaxing atmosphere.
Staying here at Riu as I write this with only 4 hours in Im Regretting ever booking to stay here. The food alone will send you running, had to walk out on our dinner at the so called stake house after about 40min wait, we got Random little broken peice of steak and pork chops dry to the point where it couldn't be cut. Went to the buffet only to experience the same thing the food is very very poor. Staying in the deluxe side for what reason I have no idea, the perks are not worth it. Avoid at all cost there are.much better resort all over Jamaica this is my seventh resort here in Jamaica and this is by far the worst.
I Went for a week to the RIU with my 5 kids on 2oth of March. Ages 17 to 12. thru Sunwing, which was surprising excellent. Trip for all of us to book at resort averaged $1,500.00 each. I thought that was more than reasonable.Third time in Jamaica, Ist time in Ocho Rios.Ocho rios is the best place in Jamaica to go because its where all the sites are nearby to see.Had adjoining rooms ( actually rooms across from each other that a share a private entrance/vestibulePaid $200 more to get ocean view which I think was worth it as we were on the 4th floorResort is a tad tired, but huge, clean and great food. If people complain about the food here, then they're just unhappy people.Beach was great, clean and blue water.Plenty of spots and chairs. Jerk chicken hut on beach is good but usually closed early.I felt comfortable leaving resort with 5 kids by taxi which I would get at the front of the hotel. A must see and experience is the BLUE HOLE. Its like dun river falls with the jumping in the lagoons. The catamaran tour was but price to duns river.Honestly folks, its safe to book excursions on your own and much cheaper. All tour agents sing the same song and try to scare you into only booking with them. BUT ITS SAFE.... AND MUCH CHEAPER!!Locals need to eat too eh !The casino in the resort sucks as does the sports bar in the basement. That really is my only complaint... aside from the 1 and half hr milk run to get to resort.BUT... its a great resort and I would go back.Don't listen to the na sayers.. Just unhappy folks.Great resort. Ya Mun, Respect :))
