Rooms on the Beach Ocho Rios

After spending 5 days in a all inclusive resort up the road, we were going to spend the last 3 days of our vacation in a hotel and experience the opposite of the pampering and the catering that we just experienced. Upon our arrival, I have to have physical proof of my resvervasion. Apparently, they did not have my reservasion in their system. The problem is that they overbooked the hotel. Upon providing proof of our reservasion, there was not a room available for us. So we patiently waited a little over 1hr before a room was provided. One we were in our room, we noticed that the fixtures, pretty much everything was outdated with a island arrangement of linen and drapes. Nice patio view of the Ocean. We had arrived around 10am. There were no linens in our room and did not receive them until 8 pm that evening. The service was slow in that aspect. The food was mediocre, the restaurants and shops were within walking distance. The pool and bar is right next to the restaurant. The hotel is private, but the Beach is public! The moment you set foot on public land your are subjected to being approached by the locals and asked for many of things that involve getting you $$ from you. Just say No is my motto! This Beach has great views. Local parties on the beach. Can get your hair braided, boat tours, jet ski’s. This is where the Carnival Cruise Ship line ports@. So if you ever take a cruise to Jamaica, this is where you’ll land. Also there are Cats everywhere! It did not matter if I was at our 1st location or here. I was told by some locals that they help with minimizing the rodent problem that these places deal with. The day we were checking out, it was like 4:00am. I’m bringing our bags down to the lobby. I here some noise as if an employee was emptying the trash. As I’m approaching the end of the hallway, a cat jumps right out of the freaking garbage can. I’m like Woah!! I’m not scared of cats, but DAMN!! Did not see that one coming. Not only that, the cat was so frightened that the cat crapped rt on the floor as it was dodging me before running and jumping on the roof. The cat was looking @ me wating for me to leave. I only know this because after dropping the bags downstairs, the cat was returning until it seen me walk back near that trash can. Overall a great experience. Met people from Canada, the UK, Paris. Good vibe. You get what you pay for so -to-speak.
I've stayed at rooms in negril in the past and was a good experience. So I decided to book Ocho Rios. Front desk are pleasant. Beach is nice but tons of locals. ( don't really bother you). Hotel is very old. Rooms are ok. Food in the restaurant for breakfast is terrible. Coffee is the worse I've ever drank. Just horrible. There is no security. Locals walk in / out of pool area. Never seen anything like it. Although seems to be a safe location. Security is a must. Fitness area. Don't bother. Equipment is 30-40 yrs old. Nothing works properly. If your looking for a cheap budget vacation than it's ok. Right downtown ocho rios so you can walk everywhere.
I spent one week at this hotel which I will review in a few sections:Location - This is amazing. It's next to the town centre and the strip. Everything is in walking distance and to be honest, you are spoilt for choice with food and shopping.Facilities - they have a small pool with a bar and from there you step onto the beach. If you want to lounge about on the beach and a few drinks, then this has all you need. There is no live entertainment like other hotels. However, it's location permits this omission as there is ample entertainment on the strip. Ocean 11 a short walk is a must. Beach - very clean and no hassle. Running on the beach at 6am in the morning is a must!!! Hospitality - I have no complaints. They could be slow at times with certain problems but they were amazingly helpful and did all they could to help. I preferred the staff here more than the Riu where I also stayed. They are beautiful people, kind and help and I would say leave a tip at the end for at least $500 Jamaican dollars which is about £3 GBP. I have travelled and not everyone is like the staff here!! Food - Breakfast is simple; Continental. Putting that to one side, you can order off the menu which my family ALL loved. If you have bake beans ask for it with pepper and onion along with cheese omelette and FESTIVALS Or fried dumplings . All the meals are excellent and very hot (temperature) with a reasonable selection. Simply, the food was authentic and tasted home from home. My son did say the portions could be bigger and I agree but just ask as they are so active accommodating. Accommodation - It is very clean but dated. Also has no lifts although it is only three floors and porter will help with luggage. TV had to be changed as it's reception was very poor. Wi fi was OK but temperamental in rooms but great in foyer. Beds were superb and comfortable but the bathroom was slightly dated but not off putting. Travel & Transportation - tourist equates to high price and alway gets overcharged . However, through the hotel I found an amazing driver called Chris. Example I booked him ALL day 12 hours and it cost me 8,000 jamaica dollars about £50 GBP plus tips. We built up a good relationship and we taxi to Kingston several times with him for about £120 GBP plus tips a day meals which for me was about £10 GBP for the day. Mobile 001876 3865715. He explains everything and did my shopping in town so I saved big time.Ask Chris to take you to the Blue lagoon and ask for Ricardo +18767294931 to take you on a tour. They have jet good there and seems more pleasant than other water falls. He was amazing. Showed us all the plants the water jumps EVERYTHING!!! and guided everyone even the kids. Tell him how long you want on a tour for and he will make it last. I think 90 minutes is more than enough. I tipped him about £15 GBP as he guided my three children. Get some aqua shoes for the trip. The hotel location makes it a good trip and a must. FINAL POINT - The hotel might not be the top end hotel but food, location and stay more than compensated (alone guest with the price). IF you want a quite hotel with not too many people, where you can read a book and lounge about, this is a must and not too expensive. Grocery stores opposite hotel, hair dresses male and female; authentic market and atmosphere makes it as real as it can be. It's a holiday hotel for jamaicans I'd best describe it which is a compliment. I found Jamaican currency to be the best and whist you have 3 ATM within walking distance, take and SPEND Jamaica dollars as they give you change in that currency. I hope all above has helped!!
The front desk staff was friendly and polite. The hotel was just a hot mess. It was totally run down and should be closed for immediate renovation. We were not given and when asked for wash rags was told that there was done. The sofa in the room was so scary looking as if it were picked up from trash on the road. The bathroom was dark and dingy. No floor mats no wash rags totally worn and torn hand and bath towels. The soap dispenser had something growing in it. Just horrible. The room furnitures were broken. The mattress tough as a rock and pillows pretty much non existence. Surprisingly the room didn't smell badly. The hallways were lined with broken furniture, a clothesline hangs from the balcony window and the walls of the hallways dirty!
I recently stayed here with a friend and the hotel is centrally located and on the beach. The hotel has a decent pool and the staff is friendly. I did encounter some difficulties at check in. I did not get the room I paid for due to some confusion with the bed type. My room did not have a hair dryer and it took a full day for them to get one to us. The breakfast that was included was decent and sufficient.
