Rooms on the Beach Ocho Rios

This is a cheap hotel & you get even less than you pay for! The building itself is old and very poorly maintained. The countertops in the bathroom of our room were covered with some kind of unknown stains, the paint around all doors & windows was peeling off & there was no way to close the room doors without them slamming & echoing throughout the building. The place smells clean after they mop your floor with bleach water but as soon as that wears off the mold smell from the heavy curtains will take your breath away! The broken windows in the breezeways between buildings, mentioned by another reviewer, should have been an embarrassment to any decent management staff. The management appears to be a big problem. At check in we were informed the refrigerator we had requested for our medications was unavailable, and when I asked when they thought one would be available, a smart little girl behind the counter (it took 3 of them to check us in) snapped "maybe in 3 weeks"----Seriously??? You would tell a guest staying a week such a thing? After 3 days of checking with the hopeless front desk staff my husband finally asked a worker who was painting in the hallway---and Bingo! We had a refrigerator! WTF??Another problem we had at check in was the point where we were informed there was no smoking anywhere on the property except on the pool deck where there was 1 trash can with an ashtray on top. NOWHERE on their website is anything ever mentioned about smoking, and we assumed by paying extra for a balcony room we would be permitted to smoke out there---we were informed there would be a $300 charge should they catch a whiff of a cigarette on our balcony. In order to have a cigarette we had to walk down a long hallway, down a flight of steps, down a breezeway (with the broken windows), down another long hallway & 2 sets of double locked doors----NOT convenient. On top of the inconvenience, a female "manager" popped up about 5 days into our stay to inform us we couldn't smoke by the ashtray & couldn't smoke in the driveway & in fact "smoking has been banned in Jamaica"! (This, of course, is a total lie---although they did finally ban smoking INDOORS at restaurants a couple of years ago.) IF they have a NO smoking policy they NEED TO CLEARLY STATE IT ON THEIR WEBSITE---and then decide if & where they can accommodate their guests---and be consistent about it! We travel to Jamaica at least twice a year & this was without a doubt the most miserable stay I have ever experienced. With the property in such disrepair, I cannot even recommend it for non-smoking families. It's a good location in town---but you'd be much better off going next door to SandCastles.
Good location just off the Main Street in Ocho Rios and with direct beach access. Good pool for the kids.We stayed one night there to break a journey from Negril to Port Antonio. Served us well in that regard but its a place which needs attention. Beginning to feel run down and the rooms need some maintenance.Reasonable service and an adequate continental breakfast. Adequate overall
This hotel has the basic things like a Motel 8. The beach is nice. The hotel is old and needs a complete overhaul. As an example on every floor in the breeze way between building there where a series of old windows that had broken mechanisms and had not been closed in years. In talking to some other guests there seem to be a few rooms that are had plumbing issues that were not fixed. It is clean!!! Some of the staff where nice, some where just doing there job. One of the big issues is they don't allow smoking even on the room balcanies forcing us to smoke in the parking lot or on the beach. The wireless worked good near the lobby, but in the rooms it was spotty. The continental breakfast is OK and you can order a full breakfast and the restaurant food was good.
We spent a wonderful week here. The staff was always helpful and accommodating. We hope to go back in another year or so. The only sour note had to do with some other guests who were beyond rude. But that can happen at home.
I read all the reviews before going to Ocho Rios Rooms and I think some of these reviews are simply off the mark in their criticism. Three of us, females in a family, enjoyed our stay very much! As mentioned by others here, the location is perfect, right around the corner from shops and restaurants, a recently revitalized part of town serving the cruise ship tourists and locals. From the hotel, best to turn right on Main St, not left which is older town and all locals. We felt safe, never hassled no matter. Yes, the hotel is aging a bit, but has an authentic Jamaican plantation style feel to it. The beach is vast, white sand, and quiet with lovely old almond trees providing shade in a few places. Water is clear, a few patches of seawood further out which is lovely as little silver minnows have a habitat. The staff - so friendly, professional, tidy, and welcoming - all departments. Dave, our tour provider and driver became a valuable contact and I'd like to say he became our friend. The chef is very skilled. Whole roast snapper was amazing! And Chef brought in lobster for us! We don't know why dinners evenings were so quiet in the restaurant as food is fresh, big portions, average price. Order a bar fridge for your room for leftovers! We did. The breakfast buffet was always nice. Bread from a local bakery was like homemade and you toast your own. Lots of fruit, cereals, juice, condiments are provided. The rooms are cool, cleaned daily, air conditioning is fine, and flatscreen tvs offer many satellite stations. The climate is humid so it's not musty like some people have commented...just humid, but tile floors are cool. If you want to be isolated and remote, stay at one of the many all inclusive hotels in Runaway Bay and toward the airport. If you want the best of both worlds - a quiet resort with a cultural feel at an awesome price, stay at Rooms! We'll be back. And it's always nice to tip - at this price you can afford it!
