Rooms on the Beach Ocho Rios

My friends and I stayed at Rooms in Oches Rios and were very very happy with our stay! The staff are friendly and very helpful, fantastic food at a reasonable price ...and you can even have your meals brought out to enjoy on the beach (big thank you to Edward and Ryan!) light breakfast menu included but they have a full a la carte menu as well as a wonderful pool bar! Bedrooms are clean, and non smoking. . I'd recommend a balcony over looking the ocean. ..just so relaxing! Beach is right there and Rooms is located in the middle of town. ..turn right on the main street towards Margaritas Ville or left up to the main area of local flavors. ..straight is turtle park :) everything within easy walking distance. We will definitely be booking with Rooms again on our next trip! Regards, Carolyn S
Stayed quite a few times only for location as it's at the beach front and close to shops, easy to get around walking so we could be relieved from driving (had a road trip around island - stayed in various rustic but lovely places, such as Jakes Hotel and Zion Country). So we were glad to be able to air out again right on the beach (and our clothes!).Not like it was some years ago, needs updating, not sure if new owners will keep it in this range of $ or move it up with the new Moon Palace (the old Grand) which excludes many just on room per night. It may be allowed to run down to rebuild?Meals ok. Continental breakfast. We had a deal with a cooked breakfast included and dinner. Ok (just that we know we've had better home cooked JA food all around the island for much cheaper).Pool atrociously shallow (great for kids) - one of my main disappointments as I love to holiday and swim, however sea is right there. Agree with others, they haven't cleared the sea bed so natural grass/seaweed, bumpy walk into the sea! Some staff friendlier than others. Safe was closed couldn't use it but we had already asked for extra pillows, TV to sort, toilet getting blocked and added fridge US$8 per night so didn't want to bother them again!Other main disappointment - too many men around the pool (and beach though I know they cannot shut off the beach, many approach you, though friendly enough but after 3 or 4, like leave me alone!). The staff around the pool - all men and 4 - 10 men at any one time. I suppose it seems more in low season as they are not as busy but just hanging around pool/beach makes it uncomfortable for women (unless you want attention or looks!).For us preferable than staying cocooned in a complex but won't stay as many nights next time (this time 4, before 2 - 7 nights).Again, location good for all trips, local food cheaper outside and nicer! Try Jerk Hut opposite park on main road. Try patties from Juicee or Tastee....Island Grill left of hotel...and it goes on...hair and barbers right of hotel in James Plaza...local market, right of hotel be prepared to barter!Wifi good this time and in room! TV in room. Telephone for show only. Paid price / value mainly for beach setting, though they do change towels every day - nice touch. However feels like the love and pride has left the building (unlike Jakes & Zion) so was ready to move on after 3 nights wind down/breeze out.
Last week we stayed on the ground floor ocean view side. The sights and sounds were absolutely wonderful. If you want to be part of the real Jamaica this is a great hotel. Not five star but a jem for the money. There was a few small things like our door not locking very well but it was all taken care of. If you want a fridge make sure to order one as they may not have one available when you get there. Tbey people, food, pool service was wonderful. Very attentive to the guests. Also Excursions Ocho Rios was the best travel guide ever. Tubing down the river, seeing all the sights from fancy homes to Ritchie knowing little details about anything you wanted to know about! This was a holiday to remember! Thanks Ocho Rios and the people are wonderful!!
Budget hotel...Had a room on the beach, could actually hear the waves and see the beautiful ocean.Room was large with two full beds- Rented a fridge for $8 /day, it was very small but managed to get stuff in .The housekeeping needs to be improved- Room was cleaned, but still had dirty cups left in room and there seemed to be a problem with the towel supply. We were three , but they kept only leaving for two people. We had to keep reminding them. Room did not have a phone, but it was rectified once I reported it.The maintenance guy- kept trying and trying until he was able to fix the problem. The continental breakfast consisted of fruits, bread , hot beverages and juice. Full breakfast was available for purchase of $6-7.00 per entree .Wifi is available but very weak in the room and is strongest in the lobby. You dont seem to stay connected in the room. The staff was very helpful and pleasant, they were a joy to work with. The property needs updating and we need some kind of entertainment for guests other than just playing loud music...I liked the location as its walking distance to the town- restaurants, shops, taxis are plentiful and nearby.
Wifi worked at the beach or if I was standing directly at reception. If I walked 2 steps away it shut off until I got back to the beach. One night we had wifi in the room, I'm not sure how that happened. When we brought it to the attention of front desk staff we were always brushed off and were also told it was impossible to get wifi in the room and one little smarty pants who couldn't lift her eyes from filing her nails said it was a lie. SERIOUSLY??? We were on vacation so we really didn't need it that much, just to check in with our kids, and to stay in touch with some friends who live in the area.Very basic continental breakfast. But they bring your pastry and a couple of pieces of fruit to you, and that's all you get. I prefer to eat fruit for breakfast so I was limited to just a couple of pieces each day. Cereal and toast you can get at the breakfast counter. One morning, the juice was pineapple. Since I am allergic to pineapple, I asked the waiter if there was another option for juice., He left and came back with what looked like orange juice, but was a mixture of pineapple and orange juice so I ended up with hives in my mouth for a few hours. The AC was broken in the room, and the shower leaked like crazy out onto the floor. It's an older hotel, and I get that things won't always be updated, but there was peeling paint in our room and in the hallways, and broken windows in the walkway. The beach area is lovely, but the water bottom was pretty mushy and grassy in many areas. But the beach staff were a lot of fun. We really didn't use the bar service that much because there are plenty of stores around so we would walk out each day and grab some Red Stripe for $1 per bottle and bring that back to the hotel. We found the food and drinks at the hotel were quite pricey considering how inexpensive it was to eat off the resort. It's in a fantastic location and Ochi is a great city to walk around, eat great food and chill with the locals. I highly suggest stepping out around 6PM to get some fresh jerk chicken from the street vendors. $5 for a half a chicken and some bread.***There is a Scotiabank down the street, so if you are Canadian, I suggest bringing a very small amount of American cash with you, then take out your money there. It was cheaper to take money out from a Canadian bank and convert directly to Jamaican dollars and pay the small service fee. We did the calculation and saved about $300CDN by doing this.
