The Jewel Dunns River Beach Resort
- What's Included
- All Inclusive Features
This was our first trip to Jewel Dunn's River Beach Resort in Ocho Rios. Everything was great and we had a good time. Thankfully the weather cooperated all week. Want to mention Martino who was a great server in the dining room. We found the resort to be clean, well kept, good food and friendly staff. Resort is really a very good resort. Nothing extravagant but no complaints.
There are so many great things about this resort. We had an awesome time and it was the perfect winter get away vacation. The Room - We had the ocean view with a balcony and I can't begin to explain how beautiful and breathtaking the view was. One may think that if you've seen one ocean view you've seen them all but I would beg to differ. And technically this is the Caribbean Sea, not the ocean. :-) The bed was comfortable and the accommodations were nice and modern. The Food - No resort has 100% completely authentic food. However, the Jewel does an excellent job of ensuring we get a variety of authentic Jamaican food in addition to a variety of other ethnic cuisine options. There is a typical American breakfast buffet with custom omelettes, fresh fruit, pancakes and other American and Jamaican breakfast novelties. There is a lunch buffet in the same place (Coral Cafe) and other lunch snack options poolside/beachside throughout the day. Aquamarina Bar & Grill has great jerk chicken and jerk chicken wraps. The veggie burger is superb! Jade is the hibachi restaurant and the only one that requires reservations. The food is excellent and our chef was entertaining and helped get the hibachi party started! Platinum restaurant was excellent as well. Other guests complained about the portions and temperature and while the food was warm, the portions were perfect considering you have multiple courses. Because it's so delicious it leaves you wanting more...maybe that's what everyone meant to say. I heard Moonstone was delicious as well but we didn't eat there. Court Jesters was decent. Being from Chicago and a pizza snob and a lover of all kinds of pizza, it was edible but nothing exciting. We're in Jamaica and they aren't known for their pizza so I didn't expect much. A few nights a week there was a property-hosted dinner. There was the beach party, the manager's reception and dinner on the pier and the Jamaican street party. Those meals were excellent and tasty as well. The Entertainment - Every night there was something going on. After the scheduled entertainment, there was a DJ in the club for music and dancing. I read all of the reviews that the resort was for "older" people and the average age was 60 but that's not completely true. Of course, "older" is relative and this isn't the place for the 20 somethings to party hard all night in a club-like environment. However, the DJ is there until 1am so if you want to turn-up and dance the night away you can, just don't expect a few hundred people around you dancing. The Excursions/Activities - You must climb Dunn's River Falls! It is what this side of the island is known for. We also did the Nine Mile Bob Marley tour and that was interesting, informative and entertaining. The Kingston tour is next on our list. On property, we took advantage of most of the non-motorized sports which were complimentary. We kayaked, sailed, and tried unsuccessfully to paddle board standing up (the waves were very high that day!). We also snorkeled which I highly recommend. There is a shallow coral reef in the middle of the sea and it was beautiful and fun to watch the fish follow us after feeding them bread crumbs using bread from the buffet. :-) We collected shells and looked for the different sea creatures. Our tour guide Andre was THE BEST!!The Service - The service was great but not "wow". But it wasn't bad and I will definitely be back. The beach drink service could use some improvement. There was one waiter for the entire beach. While it's not a large beach, it can take a while to get to everyone and that can be tough for a thirsty beach bum to understand while on vacation. I've been to all-inclusive resorts where every staff member greets you if you are interacting with them or not. This staff is not like that and this may explain why some guest reviews say the service is not that great. I disagree with that general statement and it's unfair to generalize the overall service based on that. Everyone I had any interaction with was friendly, overly helpful and wanted to make sure we were having a good time. The culture in Jamaica - the real culture outside of the tourist areas - isn't naturally overly friendly so it's unfair of guests to assume that the service is bad because everyone isn't smiling in their face. Everyone who worked at the resort in the bars, restaurants and activity areas were professional, helpful and genuinely interested in our happiness while on vacation. The Overall Feel - It is a more laid back environment with periods of turn up. It is an adult-only resort perfect for couples and grown-up getways. It is not all "old" people - the age range varied and a good mix of younger and older couples were there. There were people there celebrating birthdays, divorces, anniversaries and newly weds honeymooning. There was reggae music most of the day and at night the dance music varied from pop music, dance music and reggae. I highly recommend upgrading to the ocean view room. Not only is the view phenomenal but transportation is included as well. We will definitely be back!!!
The hotel is great we enjoyed our stay...I wanted to mention the chef Roy Shaw he was amazing in accommodating all of our dietary restrictions...the weather was a bit cold but nothing to do with the hotel
Our winter vacay was off to a bumpy start. The following comment is not resort based; the 3 hours from the time you touch down at the airport till you arrive at the resort must be known. Makes for a long travel day.Once we arrived check in was fast and staff were extremely friendly. We got to our room and to our surprise it was this tiny room with 2 double beds?? Our booking was a premium room with a king bed. The room had a broken safe and the ground level patio doors were not even locked! We returned to the front desk and spoke to the manager. Sorry we are at full capacity. The manager sent maintenance to repair the safe to secure the patio doors. The manager even took time to walk over and see us at the room. While waiting for the maintenance guy with the manager we asked how to get wifi only to find out there was none in that area. The manger said she would get that fixed. We never had wifi service in this room..... 2 days...1st night in small room..... spoke to tour representative in the morning who tried to solve our room issue. No resolution. We got this explanation the we had been upgraded in room choice. 2nd night in small room. Next morning spoke to tour representative and demanded to be moved to the room type that was listed on our booking sheet. We were moved midday. WE were relocated to this large bright mountain view room with a 4 poster king bed and a large balcony. This room was far superior to the tiny no garden view upgrade room we had to endure for 2 nights. Now to the meat of the vacation. The staff at this resort would go out of there way to make your vacation extra special with the exception of the treatment at the front desk. The pools were reasonably clean but did see a lot of debris floating on the surface form the winds. The beach is small but not open to the public. Lots of shade. There was a couple of busy days when none resort guests appeared. The food was excellent in quality and taste no mater where you were. The Buffett was small not a large selection but very good. The beach grill ( jerk chicken) and fresh stone oven pizza were amazing. The resort offers different dinner nights, beach night, dinner on the pier under the stars and are really enjoyable. The spa is a small area above the fitness gym off to the back of the resort. The service was just ok the services limited and priced at the higher level. All in all this is an older dated resort. Is is kept in good repair but needs a make over. Wifi was spotty through out the resort and very slow. The food was good. The serving staff were excellent. Pools were warm and clean, water was a little cloudy some days in the afternoon but not bad. Beach small, ocean rocky on entry and water was always cloudy and sandy. Entertainment was around every night and basic resort entertainment. You should enjoy your vacation if you chose this resort but the distance from the airport is a big down fall.I' m disappointed in the resort and tour operator at not being able to supply the room on the booking contract till the 3rd day. Not once did we ask for a room upgrade we just wanted to be moved to the room on our booking contract. We will not return to this resort
Just returned from Jamaica, the Jewel Dunn River Beach Resort. Great place, nice clean rooms, excellent food, and bar service. If I had two things to say the bus ride is long, two hours, at least on the way back to the airport, they showed "Cool Runnings" on the bus. Also for smokers and non-smokers, the smoking area is removed on the end of the beach and staff enforce the rules. Really enjoyed it never will return. Adults only.
