The Jewel Dunns River Beach Resort

We stayed 3 nights at Jewel Dunn's River. We drove to the resort in our rental car, and there was plenty of parking. Our room (4101) was not ready when we arrived, so I walked around the property as we waited, while my companion went to the beauty shop to get some of her braids repaired. By walking around, I found the tennis courts, a mini-soccer field, several hammocks big enough for 2 people, and an open air gym.Back in the lobby, I was sitting and waiting. The girl at the check-in desk walked across the lobby to tell me our room was ready. (I had been wondering how we would know when it was ready). This was a nice touch.Room 4101 was a ground floor room in one of the 2 story buildings. This room was smallish, but acceptable. Since my companion has mobility problems, it was a handicap room, which meant the bathroom was huge, with a shower that you could roll a wheelchair into, and had a seat in the shower. This room was the closest room to the covered walkway to all the restaurants. This room also used to have liquor bottle dispensers in it (from the previous owners of this hotel, presumably). But this was just an open, unused space now, and I wondered why they hadn't changed it. There was an electronic safe and a mini fridge in the room. The fridge was stocked with soda and water. There was A/C, but no ceiling fan. There was a small patio with this room, with a separate patio door. The vegetation in front of this room had just been planted, as another guest remarked about what a good job they had done during her stay there. The internet in this room was very spotty, and I found it much easier to go to the second floor of the lobby and use the two computer terminals there. There are extra charges for some things at this resort. For example, you can rent a private cabana near the pool for $50 a day. And I was surprised to read in other reviews that they charge $30 for snorkeling. Tipping is allowed. We just enjoyed the pools and the restaurants. The Coral Café has a couple of Jamaican dishes for each lunch. Check the menu at the entrance to see what they have, and know that these dishes are on an out-of-the-way table inside. The Platinum restaurant was good, and they didn't blink an eye when my companion asked for a different main course, as the dish she had first ordered was not what she was expecting (although the ingredients were the same). The chilling piano bar pool was nice and quiet. There is a pool table in the large shaded area around this bar (inside the [almost] ring of the swimming pool). The hotter of the two hot tubs is right near this bar, too. I swam at the beach one day, and found it quite acceptable. The waves were gentle, and the sand was good. The waterfall at the main pool was quite nice, but it doesn't run continuously. Apparently they have weddings and private dinners in the gazebo at the top.We enjoyed the hermit crab races they had one evening. But I was surprised that you needed real money to bet on the races. I never tried the pitch and putt golf course at the front of the hotel. We would stay here again.
We have been to Jamaica several times but never to this area. We found a good deal online and booked a 10 day stay. The bus ride from the airport seemed a little long but our resort was the last stop. After arrival at the hotel, everything was perfect. We were greeted with cool towels and cocktails while filling out our paperwork which only took a few minutes. Checkin was a breeze. Our room was really nice and clean. We were in the main building on the 6th floor. We had an amazing view from the balcony. We had debated on the main building or one of the smaller buildings. After seeing the smaller buildings, I would have gladly stayed in one of those too. They were very cute. The cleaning staff did an amazing job keeping our room clean, bringing clean towels, and keeping the refrigerator stocked. The entertainment staff were all super friendly. It amazes me how they can remember so many guests by name. Kevin was a new member of the staff and one of my favorites. The restaurants were all very good and offered a variety of options. I am not a vegetarian but do not eat a lot of meat. I love vegetables and they had so many of them. Jerry was our favorite waiter in the buffet. The jerked chicken was good and I normally wouldn't order pizza on vacation, but really enjoyed the little wood fired pizzas. The beach was beautiful and the water temperature was still warm. I have to mention Mr. Ivan. He is at the resort on most days making hats and baskets from palm fronds. He is a pleasure to talk to. I bought a hat from him and then made it a point to visit with him every day. He really is a joy. We had a perfect vacation and will definitely return. I also wanted to mention Garnet. He works at different bars on the property. He was so nice to us and we enjoyed talking to him every day.
Entertainment was under expectation. We expected more choices regarding food. The people coming should be inform that all prices are in us $. Because wasn't I lost 150$ which made me angry. This was a very bad experience, and we decided not to come back
My Husband and I just got back from our honeymoon and we had a great time. A few drawbacks I would say is the room is a little dated as well as other areas of the property such as the pool had a lot of chipped tiles, paint, etc. The staff were all very nice. We were a little unsure the whole time about the tipping situation as it is all -inclusive. I never felt pressured to tip, but it seemed to be pretty standard that tips were given, so I would just say to bring a little extra cash especially if you do any excursions. Also, as I had filled out on several different forms and correspondence that it was our honeymoon, part of me expected a little extra. Maybe a nicer room or a heart shaped towel, a special touch somewhere. They did have a honeymoon cocktail hour but that was ehhh. Anyway we still had a great time. We never had a bad meal and a decent variety was given so you don't get tired of it. I'll also say that depending on your room location be prepared to hear music until at least 2 am in the morning. You get used to it after a few days, but the travel day in was not pleasant. Another thing to note is be prepared for a long shuttle from the airport. They gather everyone up that they can and make several stops at other hotels. Jewel Dunns River is the last stop it seemed for everything. I think we would be back all in all but maybe just bring more money to upgrade certain things.
Travelled to this resort from Oct 16, 2016 to Oct 23, 2016. I travelled with a large group of girls. When we arrived we got to the resort around 11.30 am and the check-in process is a NIGHTMARE. They only have 1 person (Omar) doing check-in for a bus load of 20 people, this makes no sense. As we all stood in a line to give Omar our filled out documents, we were all baffled as to why only 1 person was doing check-in when workers were behind the counter, serving drinks giving out cold towels. After a long day of travelling, a 1hr in half drive from the airport, I would rather check-in to my room instead of having a cold towel and a drink. So we started our check-in at 11.30 am and believe it out not we did not get our keys until about 5.30 pm!!!!!!! It should also be noted, they GAVE away our room so we got the wrong room which a room with double beds! The mgr moved us to oceanview which at that point, I would take whatever I could get in order to stop the pain of checking in which has taken over 4 hrs?? This resort seems to only have 1 person doing some of the busiest responsibilities?? Alison at the breakfast buffet is the only person making egg omelets so you are waiting about 15-20 mins for your eggs. She always has a smile and works as fast as you can but give the girl a break and open the other station up so ppl don't have to wait almost 20 mins for their eggs! The grill by the pool which we frequented for lunch a lot again only run by 1 person and of course no organization no order who is ordering, just a long line up. I"m puzzled as to how this resort is a Hilton associate when they have no staff manning the busy stations?? Having said that the food at his resort is good but there is no variety at the buffet what so ever, not enough authentic Jamaican food besides jerk chicken served with French fries every day. They only provide authentic Jamaican food one day out of the week, one day will be ox tail, the next goat? I come to Jamaica expecting Jamaican food every day. For this reason we went off the resort for SEVERAL meals. We had MICHALE BUTLER, drive us around and he is GREAT, if you need someone to bring you places he's great. We found him through another group of ppl who referred him and gave him excellent reviews so we trusted him!Overall, resort is nice we had a good room with an ocean-view. Food is good but no variety and very disappointing after day 2, you will want to go off the resort! Resort needs a good overhaul of organization on how things are run. The Jewel mgt needs to seriously think about opening another alcoholic bar within the main building, as it rained the entire week we were there, you don't want to run in the rain to the bar next to the grill. Why not have the bar with the large tree open 24/7 it's connected to the lobby and when it's raining ppl can get drinks from there, it only makes sense. I would not return to this resort as the check in process is horrendous and again, I can NOT see the association with The Hilton? We still enjoyed our time but out of a group of 16 girls, almost all of them would not return back to this resort, sorry Jewel.
