The Jewel Dunns River Beach Resort
- What's Included
- All Inclusive Features
My husband and I had never been to Jamaica and after some research, booked a 4-night stay at the Jewel Dunn River Falls through Expedia. Prior to our arrival, I had emailed the resort twice at the address posted on their website to ask a question and never received a response. This should have been my first clue as our trip fell a little short. After arriving at the airport, we found our way outside to the bus transportation area. Here, we were told that the resort had oversold so we had been bumped to Jewel Paradise Cove Resort for the night. (Turns out, we met 2 other couples who were bumped their first night as well, and they all had booked through Expedia also...coincidence?) The man assured us that we would enjoy Paradise Cove and that the hotel would do something "nice" for us for our inconvenience. When we arrived at the JPC, the lady checking us in looked a bit surprised when we told her we had been moved there since JDR was overbooked, but she checked her computer and finally found us. She told us that whenever we were ready to go to the JDR to call the front desk and they would send a car for us since it was their issue for overbooking. She was very apologetic and promised that they would take good care of us while we were there. We checked in to a smilier room-type that we had originally booked and used a few of the amenities that night and the next morning. When we went to check on our car, the person at the front desk said that a bus wouldn't be there to pick us up until 1:20. We figured that since they were overbooked that our room wouldn't be ready, but we had our beach attire with us and figured we could at least get to our planned resort to use their amenities. This was not what we had expected, but tried to make the best of it. A bus arrived a 1:00 and we boarded for the 30 minute ride to the JDR. When we arrived, we were greeted with a blue drink and the offer of a cool towel. We filled out all of the paperwork (a 2nd time) and checked in within about 15 minutes. When we mentioned that we had just come from the JPC, the lady showed really no emotion or concern at all. The staff from Paradise Cove was more apologetic and it wasn't their fault that their sister property oversold! She gave us our envelope with our check in papers and the activities information sheet from the previous day, which wasn't any good to us then, I mean, if you are going to bump someone, shouldn't you at least give them updated information? At this point, there was no mention of anything "nice" that was promised for our troubles. We were given a 2nd floor ocean view room in the Sapphire building, which was what we had booked. We had emailed to see about requesting a higher floor before we arrived, but we received no response. The room itself was on the small side, but was big enough for us since we weren't going to spend much time in the room anyway. Bathroom was tiny- you could hardly close the door for any bathroom privacy. There was a nice balcony that overlooked the pool and grounds area and two small slivers of the beautiful turquoise waters,if you looked in the right direction. Our A/C was not working the first night, so my husband went down the next morning to speak with the manager about the A/C and the lack of any type of apology, concern, or even a mention of our inconvenience. After fully explaining our situation, the manager offered a $100 room credit for our troubles. Which was fine, however, we found our later in the week that one of the other bumped couples received a couple massage valued at $190. It would seem that if there is a frequent issue with oversold rooms, then there should be a consistent way to compensate for that inconvenience. I guess if my husband had been louder and more demanding, we could have had a free massage too. After finally being able to get settled, we did enjoy the resort. The pool and grounds were extremely clean and we would always see staff walking about clearing empty glasses, straightening chairs, etc. Drinks were strong and bartenders were all very personable. Joseph at the Aquamarina Bar was especially entertaining. Food was OK, your average cruise-type food. Wait staff in the buffet area kept water glasses full and plates cleared but weren't overly friendly. We did meet once nice young at breakfast on our last day (Martino) He was the most friendly we encountered all week. Spa staff circulated around the pool and beach area daily, trying to drum up business, but they were not too pushy. Chairs were plentiful and we were able to look out over the beautiful Jamaica water every day. All in all, we did enjoy Jamaica, and we would probably stay again (if we knew the hotel wasn't oversold), but we were extremely disappointed with the first day and a half of our experience.
Went for our wedding, the beach is beautiful and the views from the hotel rooms are stunning. The food is simply amazing! Would not recommend wedding services unless you have a larger party, they seemed to get more attention. Never recieved our cake after first slice. Moderatelt accomodating.
The resort grounds are beautiful but the room that we stayed in needs some updating. We were in the Lanai building and although quiet and away from some of the evening festivities, we found the room to be small (esp. the bathroom) and in need of some paint/updating. The most disappointing part of our stay was the lack of friendliness and helpfulness from the front desk and the concierge. We had to request extra water at least three times each day before getting a response and often were met with less than accommodating responses to other requests. The food was fine and the wait staff in the coral café was excellent. The cleaning staff was also excellent. Personally would not return to this property.
Room: Big room with a large double bed and patio area with chairs. However the bathroom was tiny with barely any space to turn around in. The shower wasn't very powerful especially for trying to wash one's hair post swimming. Toiletries weren't replaced during the stay even when the empty bottle of conditioner was in plain view. Service: As a lot of guests staying at the hotel are American, there is culture of tipping quite evident (which is unusual for us Brits). Quite a few of the employees weren't very friendly and mostly looking for tips. However there were a few that brightened up our day, especially the entertainment team.Amenities: Two pools and two hot tubs. One pool being where the entertainment is and the other a 'quiet' pool - both with swim up bars. A decent size area on the beach with sun loungers and shaded spots. Beautiful sand to bury your feet in and area to play beach volley ball. Range of water activities available free of charge - we had a great time on the pedalo and kayak. Also present is a spa which was very expensive considering the location. There was also a gym and tennis courts which we did not use.Food: Catered to Americans. NO JAMAICAN FOOD apart from jerk chicken at the late night bar. States 6 restaurants. The platnium restaurant and japanese restaurant produced good food however the buffet and italian restaurant need improvement. The breakfast was very disappointing with little variety.Overall we enjoyed spending time at the beach and that made our holiday. The resort itself was a tad of a let down.
Staff was awesome. Food ok. Facilities need a major uplift. 2 hour bus ride from airport comfortable but long. Average Jamaica all inclusive. Rooms really in need of renovations. Beach was small. Pool area really nice.
