Designed with all-inclusive family fun in mind, Jewel Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort is the only kid-friendly resort in the Jewel Resorts collection, offering all ages an experience that will excite. So whether you're bringing the kids or simply being a child at heart with your significant other, you'll never run out of ways to soak up the sights and sounds of the Caribbean Sea.
Location: Beachfront, an 80 minute drive from the airport and 30 minutes from Ocho Rios.
Mine and 2 other families, all with young kids were here last week. Here is a snapshot of our trip. Bus ride from the airport was about an hour and pretty painless. Note that unlike other island destinations, there isn't a tour guide on the bus selling beer and chatting about the sites - so buy something to drink before getting on. Careful though because the beer outside the terminal costs $6USD per bottle! Arrival is quick and easy and the bellman gets your bags to your room right away; which is a nice surprise compared to other islands. Rooms (and overall the whole resort) is a little tired and old, but to be honest it totally works and in my opinion shouldn't be changed. It has so much character and I fear that a reno would sterilize it too much. Landscaping is second to none - the ground are impeccably well kept - compliments to the grounds crew team. Food is good and there is lot's of variety at the buffet. We ate at all the restaurants and our favorite was the Japanese place. Great food and a great experience sitting at the teppanyaki table with the kids. Beach is good; not Cuba or the Turks, but good. Sand is clean and well kept. Best part was taking a banana or some cereal out into the water to feed the fish. Instantly swarmed by hundreds of beautiful reef fish - all in only 5 feet of water so the kids loved it. Water park is amazing - not really our thing as we are beach folk. But we did go a few times and loved it - as did the kids. There are always activities being organized and each night you will get a note in your door outlining what's going on - take the time to read it. Get a ground floor room - we stayed in 2116 and the location was perfect. Close to everything you need. PM me if you have any questions.
We choose the Jewels Runnaway Bay based upon all the good things that people had said on TripAdvisor. It’s a good hotel, yes a little dated in the room style but we didn’t go to Jamaica to sit in a room. The rooms are a good size, clean and well maintained. Personally we found the food to be better in the speciality restaurants as opposed to the buffet which suffers the same problem as every buffet in every hotel in the world and that’s lukewarm food and in the case of Runnaway Bay overcooked as well. The vast majority of the staff were great but everybody has an off day and we bumped into a couple of staff having an off day. We never found a shortage of sun beds in any location and always plentiful shade available if that’s what you want. We would recommend the hotel to all our friends. The hiccups for us were some training issues needed at the hotel, some personal preferences and some annoyances from fellow guests but that’s not the hotel’s fault.Hiccups:-A couple of weeks prior to arriving we contacted the hotel to advise that our son had a severe life threatening nut allergy and also could we have adjoining rooms. We got an email saying can’t guarantee the rooms but would do their best and that our son needed to see the chef to talk about his Gluten problem. Gluten problem? I went back to the hotel and they said oops sorry, same scenario speak to chef. Fredrick the Chef and in fact all chefs in the restaurants were outstanding in meeting my son’s allergy issues, well done. Special mention to Ingrid in the Japanese restaurant who made a fabulous and memorable night for the group she was cooking for.We arrived at midday and Sharmania? On reception checked us in and said our rooms were still being serviced but if we came back at 2.30-3.00 they would be ready and he confirmed we had adjoining rooms. Arrived back at reception at 3.00 to complete the checking in process with Adrian and he gave us the keys to 3206 and 3228. ‘These don’t seem to be adjoining rooms’ No they are not but they are on the same floor. Where’s Sharmania? He appeared and took over the checking in and asked Adrian why he had moved us? Adrian said he had not and then they carried on talking in Creole. After waiting a further 20 minutes Sharmania gave us 3205 and 3206 and off we went. They were not adjoining but on opposite sides of the corridor. We gave up Our keys failed to work on a couple of occasions and reception reprogrammed them but on one occasion didn’t both to ask us any security questions relating to our rooms. Worrying! We had a fabulous night in the Platinum restaurant with a wonderful waiter Kelvin who made it special for us so much so that we revisited the restaurant when the menu changed. This time we had a young girl, pleasant enough, took our food order and drinks order for house wine and beer. Starter arrived but no drinks. We asked where the drinks were and they were coming. 2nd course arrived still no drinks and still promises of they were coming. I asked another waitress nearby to get me the manager and the lady said she was the restaurant supervisor and she would chase up the drinks. The main course arrived and still no drinks so that was it I pursued the restaurant supervisor and immediately got our drinks and an apology. Sorry is not good enough, we didn’t bother with dessert and left. Thanks for spoiling our night. We decided to have lunch in the Pizza restaurant one day. From the time our order was taken for food and drink it took 50 minutes for the food to arrive and 30 minutes for the drinks to arrive. The restaurant was not busy with only 5 tables occupied. One of our meals was wrong and on the table next to us they also had a wrong meal but they just got up and left the food we having waited 50 minutes ate the incorrect meal.It concerned me that the lifeguards in the water park spent a lot of time chatting instead of doing the job they were paid to do. No problem until something happens. For us the music in the main pool area was too loud and appeared to be the staff choice of music rather than the clients’ choice so we moved to the lovely quiet beach. The mix of guests is such that a number of guests come from countries where people tend to shout at each other rather talk to each other so sometimes we got to enjoy the conversation of people 8 to 10 sunbeds away from us whether we wanted to or not, coupled to this the lack of respect to staff with no please or thank you at times it was irritating. As I said, some training issues, some personal preferences and some annoyances but please don’t let these put you off going to the Jewels Runnaway Bay
3 generations of my family visited Dec 30—Jan 7. This is a really fun place, especially for children. There are two major pools plus a water park. Our 3 year old enjoyed the shallow pool and the slides and shallow pool in the water park, and kids camp one morning. Our 7 year old enjoyed finding friends, playing at the beach (really nice clean sand in and out of the water until rocks of a small reef were reached gradually at about 5-6 feet in depth), in the hammocks, swimming in each of the pools, and all the slides, qualifying for the big ones at her height of 48”. She also chose to go to the kids camp for a major part of two days, during the latter part of the week when it rained. Two of us took a brief catamaran ride with one of the skippers. 2-3 of us played pocket billiards twice. There are at least 2 pools tables and 2 pingpong tables, but I suspect the holiday season plus a few days of rain caused tables to be hard to access without a wait most of the time. Several of us enjoyed relaxing on a beach chair. There were always beach chairs available, as well as abundant shade of palm trees and umbrellas—and sun, too, if preferred. There was no risk of losing out on a spot by waiting to “reserve” a chair. And the beach is really big, so one doesn’t have to tip-toe between rows of chairs. I enjoyed volleyball: the sand court was active almost all day with players 8—68 years old, and this group was always willing to take any additional player (up to 6 a side, and if 12 or more were present, rotate in the extras equally). Though there were several very good players, this isn’t tournament volleyball, but nobody expects that. We took our golf clubs, but there we were having so much fun, we did not play. Staff indicated that there is no reason to make tee reservations, despite what I had read in advance. There are tennis courts and a good basketball hoop, but they didn't appear to see much action. Food options are numerous. We tried them all, and all have pros and cons. I suggest trying each early to decide what you like. Best to get to Italian restaurant when it opens, if not 5-10 minutes before, to avoid a wait. Japanese restaurant is entertaining, perhaps especially for kids, so get a reservation for a dinner there right away when you arrive. It isn’t sushi, but rather grilled vegetables, rice, beef, chicken, salmon, and shrimp (you can reject any you don’t want). If the grill line is longer than you want for jerk chicken or burgers at noon one day, go somewhere else. The pizza place was never too busy, and we all liked it. The buffet is certainly the easiest for a diverse group’s tastes, and never a wait, with flexible hours. Evening entertainment was good. My main complaint there was our early bedtimes (too young and too old) didn’t allow us to remain and listen after dinner. Like everyone else on this site, I was thrilled with how really nice all the staff were. Comparing to the reviews of the two Beaches resorts in Jamaica, and competition in DR and Turks/Caicos, I am glad I chose this one for an all inclusive family vacation. I advise against making the mistake I made: booking rooms 9 months in advance for the Christmas holidays anticipating that I could reduce the nights once I knew for sure who could come exactly when. When August arrived and family had committed to their work/vacation schedules, I learned that my reservations could not be modified without first cancelling each. But if I did that, no new reservation would be able to be made because the system would show “sold out” for this valuable time. After multiple calls to the USA toll free number and directly to Jamaica, I was rescued by Fayon, who knew how to override the system and save the nights I wanted to retain, and by Shakira, who assured me that it had been done and I truly would have two rooms when we arrived. Sure enough, everything was as promised on arrival, though by this time the per night price was no longer clear, but probably fair. We had water view rooms, and two twin beds were placed conveniently in their parents’ room (with king). The room below ours had a patio with a splash pool surrounded by walls and no view. I was glad we had a deck with a view from the second floor instead. Our king bed was very comfortable. The king in the other room was reportedly extremely saggy and uncomfortable. If it were entirely up to me, I would return—and if I got a bad bed, I would hope to get a replacement. Lesson: Don’t be greedy like I was and reserve more than you need.
My husband and I travelled with another couple to Jewel Runaway Bay in January 2018. This was our first visit to this resort and my third to Jamaica. If you have children or are a child at heart then this is the resort for you with its fantastic waterpark. We spent many enjoyable hours floating down the lazy river and going down the slides. We spent an equal amount of time at the golf course which was easily accessible via a short walk or by golf cart shuttle from the resort. The golf course was in good condition and with 4 sets of tees catered to novices and more experienced golfers alike. Thank you to Judy Carlson, the visiting pro at the golf course, for the free lessons which greatly helped to improve my husband's chipping game. As mentioned in other reviews, the staff at Jewel Runaway Bay were exceptional. They were always accessible and provided prompt and courteous service. The lifeguards and staff at the pools and waterpark were attentive and vigilant. The guest rooms are adequate but could use some remodelling and modernizing. There were many restaurants to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner and all offered a good selection of menu items. No lining up to make reservations was a bonus. The beach was kept very clean and you could always find a lounger there, around one of the three pools, or at the waterpark. The towel shacks always had a good supply of fresh, clean towels on hand. If you don't travel with electronic devices, you can access the internet and e-mail in their internet cafe. Tours can be booked either through your travel rep. or the Jamaica Tours desk in the lobby. There is is shop to pick up sundries if you have forgotten anything and souvenirs at reasonable prices. Many thanks to the staff and management of Jewel Runaway Bay for a highly enjoyable holiday.
We stayed at Jewel Runaway Bay for a week with friends & their children and we all really loved it!The location is great – right on a beautiful sandy beach and just over an hour away from Montego Bay airport.Check in was quick (welcome drinks went down well) and our rooms were ready for us as we arrived late afternoon. We had a room in the block overlooking the waterpark / opposite the Jacuzzi and our friends had a room in the block next to the pizza/ Japanese restaurants. Our room was very nice – large comfy bed, large walk in shower & 2 sinks in the bathroom, plenty of storage space, hairdryer, iron & ironing board provided, large flat screen TV on the wall & a spacious balcony. There was a coffee machine & minibar in the room that was re-stocked generously on a daily basis & contained water & soft drinks (orange, sprite etc). The air-con worked very well and kept the room cool – you have to have the balcony doors shut for the air-con to be on. There was a safe in the room to store any valuables in.The all-inclusive was fantastic – no wristbands required, plenty of food and drinks & beach towels whenever you needed them. We ate at all of the restaurants during our stay. Breakfast was in the Coral Café (main buffet) where there was so much choice – omelette station, egg station, toast/muffins/bagels, pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, smoothie station & plenty of hot choices which sometimes varied. The omelette station was definitely a favourite and “egg boy” on the egg station was very friendly and a fountain of knowledge! The Moonstone Grill opened around 11.00am and served chips, wraps/sandwiches (ham/cheese, jerk chicken), burgers & pasta.Lunch was either in the Coral Café or at the pizza restaurant – both which opened at 12.30. There was an ice cream machine in the buffet restaurant at both lunchtime & dinner which was definitely a hit!We ate dinner in the Coral Café a few times which was great as there was so much choice – even better if you just fancied grazing and a bit of everything! The Pizza restaurant was very good – freshly cooked pizzas, a few Italian main options & a few choices for dessert. The Platinum restaurant was very nice & felt a bit more “formal” inside. The food was extremely well presented, some dishes in quite a fun way.The Italian restaurant was great- delicious food and a lovely setting right next to the beach. There was quite a big menu to choose from and you could also choose to have fresh pasta made your way with a choice of pasta, toppings, sauce etc! There were a few fresh desserts to choose from too.The Japanese restaurant is the only one that requires reservations – 24 hours before. We were lucky and managed to get a late booking on our last night. Here you choose your starter, soup & dessert from the menu and the main course is cooked in front of you by the chef. Our chef was very funny & served us with delicious food! It was also very filling. There were a few bars to choose from – the lobby bar in the main reception area, the grill bar and also the pool bar located at the children’s/infinity pool near the water park. There were so many drinks to choose from – cocktails galore (alcoholic & virgin), wine, beer (mainly Red Stripe), champagne, spirits, soft drinks, hot drinks. The waterpark opened every day from 10.30am – 6.00pm and was great fun! It is a real bonus to be able to use it as much as you want as part of the all-inclusive booking. We used it almost every day & us adults enjoyed it just as much as the kids. There were always plenty of sunbeds/ umbrellas available & also cabanas that you could hire for the day which had settees/tables in and were under cover. The lifeguards were very attentive & kept an eye on everyone very well. The slides had a minimum height limit so were not suitable for small children but there were also slides in the children’s play area section. There was a bar & food area in the waterpark which was great. We ate lunch in there one day and really enjoyed it. There were hot dogs, wraps, pizza, chips, nachos! The pools were great. We spent most time at either the children’s/ infinity pool or the main pool. They were kept very clean & the lifeguards were always very friendly & attentive. The beach is gorgeous – beautiful white sand and turquoise sea. It was quite choppy most of the time we were there so the red flag was up most days – this meant that watersports were limited for safety reasons. We did see the glass bottom boat going out a few days. Snorkelling just off of the beach was great – we saw lots of fish, someone saw an octopus & there were also quite a few sea urchins on the seabed which you need to look out for. A lot of people were wearing watershoes. There was always plenty of sunbeds & umbrellas available so there was no one reserving them early etc. The gym was good – running machines & stationery bikes plus free weights/ weight machines. It gets very warm in there even with the fans/air-con on but there is a cold water machine available plus towels/paper towel. The Wi-Fi was intermittent at times but this did not bother us during our stay. We could usually get it in the room and at most places around the resort. Entertainment was very good – our friend’s daughter enjoyed crafts on the beach with Clive. The steel drum band were awesome and the talent show was also good fun to watch. The only negative for us was that the guests in the room below us smoked a lot in their outside area which meant we could smell smoke a lot of the time. This did not bother us as much as it would have done if we had children as it would have limited us allowing them to spend time on the balcony/ have the balcony doors open. The resort do actually specify that the rooms/most of the resort is non-smoking and that people should only smoke in the designated smoking areas so really this was a bit bad of those guests! We did one excursion which we booked at the tour desk at the resort. It was a Chukka day trip snorkelling/ Dunn’s River Falls which was a great day. You definitely need water shoes or some sort of footwear for this trip, we were told you were not allowed to do it bare foot which is probably a sensible decision! Every staff member we encountered was wonderful – they are all so friendly and genuine. They would go out of their way to ensure you were having a wonderful holiday & they were always happy. Everyone was great with our friend’s children which was really lovely. They definitely did not expect tips but received any very gratefully. We loved our stay at Jewel Runaway Bay and were very sad to leave at the end of the week so would definitely return and would highly recommend :-)
