So whether you're bringing the kids or simply being a child at heart with your significant other, you'll never run out of ways to soak up the sights and sounds of the Caribbean Sea.
Location: Beachfront, an 80 minute drive from the airport and 30 minutes from Ocho Rios.
Staff were mainly young and enthusiastic. They would feed you and supply you with drinks and information as needed. Main areas and gardens were kept in very good condition. The sleeping areas and rooms could do with some TLC, but were about acceptable. The food was abundant as was the choice of cocktails and other drinks. Entertainment was varied, and there was constant music. The beach areas and facilities were very good, you could go for a catamaran sail with an expert; use a pedal boat or go snorkelling. If snorkelling bring some bread and the fish will mob you, great!
Overall we had a wonderful vacation at Jewel Runaway Bay. The beach and pools were beautiful and well maintained. I thought the food was excellent and a good variety of restaurants. The staff were amazing- really went out of their way to make us welcome and interact with the kids. The only negatives were the fitness center was not much and the treadmills were all broken. Found outside n my last day they would have shuttled me to the golf course to run there but it was too late. Also the kids activities and teen club were not as organized as they are on cruises or at some other resorts we have been to. Would recommend it and go back!
The service from all staff is outstanding however, the facilities are shabby and run down. Stair carpet is dirty and is very well worn, the bathrooms and bedrooms are refurbished but poorly and not much thought given to function or practicality. The maid service is excellent and beds are comfortable. The gardens and grounds are nicely maintained and it is a pleasant stroll to get to any restaurant or pool or the beach. This is not a hardship. The restaurant choices of food are excellent and varied but don't expect anything healthy at the poolside grill. The Italian restaurant is very good.We were there for a conference so didn't explore the golf course and didn't have kids with us to sample the kiddo areas. It rained the whole time we were there but the wedding on the beach that we witnessed, just escaped a torrential thunderstorm.Don't expect to sleep earlier than 11:00 pm as there is nightly outdoor band concerts that have volume turned up to make sure that every guest hears every note clearly... even with doors and windows closed!
A bit of a profile on usFamily of 5 (43, 42, 22, 12, 8)Diamond members at Beaches / Sandals with over 80 stayed nights.Have been numerous times to Beaches Turks and Caicos, Beaches Ocho Rios/ , Beaches Negril (both resorts, they closed the other one down about 5 years ago.Friend our of daughters came back early this year from Jewel Runaway bay and only had amazing things to say, but said, I know you guys are used to Beaches so I doubt they compare. We checked out the site and when comparing the price it was about half the price of Beaches. A tad worried we decided to try it anyways and flew there with our two daughters, our son ad even took his girlfriend along with their own room since it was so much cheaper.*Check In*JewelWe got the airport, they directed us to the bus, 5 mins total, got to the resort , greeted with drinks for the adults and kids, signed the waivers, and the bell hop took us to our room with the bags. Simple. Now with beachesWe book online, then do a pre departure checking confirming our details, then check in with the agent at the airport . Once at the resort we are NEVER recognized as Diamond members , we have to fill out all our information again, and they bring us to our room without bags , saying they will be brought later , sometimes 1 to 2 hours.*Resort*Resort grounds at Jewels I would rate 8 out of 10Beaches 9 out of 10*Food*The food between the two were so similar with beaches having a 9 out of 10 and Jewel have 8 out of 10Jewel doesn't have the chocolate buffet with hand dipped chocolates and martini bar. Beaches has more of shrimp, filet mignon, lobster tail as extra. But jewel still lobster at the Caribbean restaurant , shrimp on one if the nights.Again for 50% cheaper , I'll but a filet Mignon and hand dipped chocolates when I return home :)*Room*This one threw me off the most We always get the standard room or up one level at either placeJewel has a beautiful clean room, we had 1224 and 1223. But what shocked me the most what the toilet and shower. The shower was six heads with actual water pressure and a toilet that flushed like a shotgun. Now at beaches the toilet always clog , we are constantly getting the plumber up, and the shower is a since head and feels like a light rain. I thought it was the way things were in Jamaica, but wow, not since we stay at Jewel.*Beach*JewelBeach was Beautiful at the Jewel, never needed to search for towels or a chair. The water was perfect , they have a coral reef about 35 ft out, which is great for snorkeling.BeachesNever towels, people start claiming chairs at 6 am.Beach in Negril is stunning and beach in ocho Rios is very small with alot of seaweed at time.Drinks*Same between the two.*Waterslides*Jewels has two waterslides for older kids and a area for younger kids, with a lazy river, all brand new. Peter is the man there. Beaches is old now and need updating *Kids camp*My daughters were constantly in the kids camp, they do laser tag, capture the flag on the beach at 10pm (my girls are still talking about it), and a ton more activities. Diva is doing a amazing job with them .Overall Jewels was a amazing find, staff are so very friendly, tipping is allowed but you don't feel like you need to, they just always give amazing service. The beaches resorts in Jamaica are nice, but when you are saving 40% to 50%, why bother. Beaches Turks and Caicos is at another level but probably 2.4 times the price.Sorry Beaches, you have lost some Diamond members to Jewels.
This review is a little late but still wanted to share our amazing experience of this resort. We have now travelled here twice March 2014 and May 2016. Our first trip we had our 4 month old and 19 month old so our priorities were shaded areas and kid friendly. The resort did not disappoint. From the amazing wait staff (Chamille!) to the friendly kids club staff we were very welcomed. We didn't use the kids club first visit but we did meet the girls and checked out for future visits. Our most recent trip back in May we travelled with my sister/bro in law and their two children 3 and 5. So with 4 kids between 18 months and 5 kids club was a MAJOR advantage. Afternoons were hot and having an air conditioned place the kids could go to for a couple hours was a relief for all!! Our kids loved going, even the littlest. Let's hope I can remember everyone - Stacy Ann (the supervisor) was so amazing! Deirdre, Ash, Sparkle, Carla, Munchie, Zoey ... I really hope I didn't miss anyone!! There were special crafts (we have our hand painted rocks on display in their bedrooms), games, movies, special tie-dying. For older kids we saw them on beach doing all sorts of great activities and there is a teens area. Can't comment too much on that though. My niece fell while running around and they immediately took her to nurse, found us, had the dr coming to stitch up an hour later! They were more in tears then us! (If you're reading ladies, she's perfectly fine only tiny scar!). If you want a fabulous kids club for little ones, with amazing people, look no further. As for rest of resort, the waterpark is great for kids of all ages, there is a pool that's shallow with fountain in middle so kids can splash around, rooms are good (we've stayed in oceanfront and topaz), clean facilities and friendly all around. Wait staff are helpful - even getting me dairy free milk for my one guy. Food is good - can be repetitive at buffet but there are lots of great restaurants and they aren't too busy. Beach is fantastic! Mainly everything great about this resort but really wanted to highlight how amazing kids club staff were and how great this place is if you have little ones. We will be back again - maybe even sooner than we thought!
