I recently spent a week with my 15 year old at this amazing resort. We had a plunge pool room in the Topaz building. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable and the shower was amazing. The pools were quite busy during the day so it was nice to have the option to swim in our own private plunge pool. Our room was cleaned and or fridge was stocked daily. I celebrated a birthday while I was there and our room attendant left me a lovely note and towel snake that truly made my day. I had rented a cabana for the day (definitely worth the $30) and mentioned in passing that it was my birthday and concierge had also sent a piece of cake to my room! Probably my favourite part of the resort...the beach, it is absolutely gorgeous. There were always chairs and tons of shade for those of us that burn easily. Also nice to be able to snorkel and see the fish right off the beach. This is definitely a good resort to go to with smaller children as the pools and water park seemed to be a big hit with the younger age groups. The evening entertainment was great. The Silverbirds is definitely a do not miss show. Also enjoyed dining under the stars and the beach party. The circus night was also enjoyable. The food was good. I was a little disappointed that although the grill had quite a large list of options, they did not have everything available. No snapper burger, chicken burger or meatball subs. The waterpark had some great seasoned fries and mango mayo. Dinner at Moonstones, Coral Café and the Court Jesters was all great. We did not get the opportunity to eat at Platinum. The Jade Samurai was a pleasure and the lady that seated us was the sweetest. The staff were efficient and I would say very busy. Sometimes it seemed slightly under staffed but the staff do their best to get to everyone quickly. I found that everyone was nice, some friendlier then others but everyone tried their best to meet requests. We had a late flight out and they were very accommodating in giving us a courtesy room so that we had a place to get ready and cool off before our bus ride to the airport. I thought that was fantastic. Also, the Wifi, not great. I understand they are working on this but to be honest, we survived. As many say about the rooms, I didn't go to Jamaica for the wifi so this was a minor inconvenience. We also booked a couple of excursions through the tour desk at the hotel and the lady was very informative and helpful at picking the right excursions. All in all it was a great week and we made many memories. I would recommend this resort to my family and friends, especially those looking for a family get away.
Stayed here for a week with our 3 children. Hotel room was clean and comfortable. Food at the resort was excellent, kids loved the buffet for dinner. All the resort restaurants were excellent. Pools were nice and kids got to try scuba diving. They have a waterpark which is great for younger kids, under 12's will love it. Beaches were really niceThe kids clubs seemed good for really young kids, up to 5ish. Didn't work very well for our kids ages 7, 10 and 13. There were a few activites they enjoyed, laser tag being one, but over all they found the kids club disappointing. Luckily they enjoyed swimming and the scuba diving. We also did a day trip to the Dunns river falls and a catamaran cruise.Overall its a great family resort and great value.
We got home yesterday from a 2 week stay at Jewel Runaway Bay. We are not an easy group to please as we have 9 family members ages 3, 3, 7, 16, 17, 25, 30, 40 and 45! However the hotel has thought of everything for all tastes and ages and all 9 of us had a great stay! ActivitiesThe hotel has a vast amount of activities for those that want to engage but at the same time, they don't hassle you to join in so if you want to relax by the pool or on the beach without feeling pressured you are free to do so. Our 7 year old and 3 year old nephew loved the Kids camp, which is well staffed and has a clear, fun timetable of events. One of our teenagers made good use of the games room. We borrowed snorkelling equipment (free for 2 hours) which was really fun and the fish are easy to find and beautiful. My husband used the gym every day and said it was well stocked. Size - small and friendly We loved the fact the hotel was small enough to allow our teenagers (one who has autism) to wander freely, knowing that they'd be fine and we could find them when we needed to. Even our 7 year old learned her way around quickly which helped us relax a bit. RestaurantsThe choice of restaurants are great, as the style and food are varied and you can visit any restaurant as much as you want. (We hate the hotels where you have limited visits!) We never once had to wait for a table and could always book into the Japanese easily (the only restaurant you have to book) We loved the Platinum as it was nice to have Air con and it felt a bit more of a special evening out. Although a bit posher than the other restaurants, it's very quirky and the kids (and adults) loved the way the food was served. Service in the Platinum was excellent and it was lovely having a pianist too. We had breakfast once in the Platinum and although it made a nice change from the buffet, the food is pretty much the same and for us it was a bit slow for the 3 year olds so we used the buffet all of the other mornings. The Japanese restaurant was really nice (the favourite of some of our family members) we went 3 times and had a different chef every time but they were all excellent. I can't remember her name, but one evening we had a lady Chef who was not only a great chef but was funny, chatty and lovely with the children. We visited Moonstone twice and although the food is lovely and I would recommend going for that reason, the actual restaurant doesn't seem to have the same atmosphere or high level of service as any of the others? I can't quite work out why? But the food is nice so definitely eat there! Court Jesters do amazing pizzas and the staff were great with our boisterous little 3 year olds! Make sure you visit for lunch. The buffet is great and has a very wide selection of food. The staff are great and we didn't particularly feel flies were an issue as other people have said? The food was fresh, tasty and the restaurant was always clean and tidy. They have an under the stars evening where you have your meal served to your table by the pool. It made a nice change and we all enjoyed the live music. They have a beach party meal once a week. We think it's a nice idea but it was a bit loud and dark for our little ones, the tables are also so big it's quite hard to speak to anyone, this and the 3 year olds trying to run in the sea constantly made the evening a little stressful so wasn't our favourite! However if we didn't have young ones it probably would have been better. For a snack during the day, the water park has a great bar/grill. We loved the fries with coconut mayo, simple yet tasty! The little ones had popcorn as their mid morning snack, washed down by a snow cone! The Grill serves delicious food, burgers, chicken, wraps etc. We honestly can't fault the food, the quality and selection is outstanding! BarsThere are 4 bars (I think?) including the one at the water park which means they don't get too busy and we never had to wait long to be served. You could see some bar tenders face fall when you ask for certain cocktails (mojito, Bob Marley etc) as they are obviously a bit of a hassle and some would even say they didn't have the right ingredients but generally service was good. We loved the strawberry daiquiris and pina coladas during the day (mostly virgin of course!) also try a Purple Rain! Pools/beach/grounds Again the hotel have thought about all types and ages and the pools are very different to each other which is great. We tried all of them but ended up using the infinity pool (with swim up bar) and water park most days as they were most suitable for our group. They are also so close to each other we could go between them really easily. The water park is perfect for kids (and we enjoyed it too!) all 9 of us loved floating around the lazy river and the children's splash zone is great for little ones. The splash pool enabled me to actually relax on a lounger as I could watch the children easily. There was never a shortage of beds or beach towels and we loved the fact you didn't have to queue and sign out the towels every time! The beach is stunning, it's clean, picturesque and again plenty of beds. The sea is postcard turquoise and is lovely to swim in. The lifeguards are very aware and the one time my 3 year old made a dash from the splash park to the lazy river, the lifeguard beat me to him! They were vigilant, friendly and ensured all rules were followed. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Entertainment Most shows were good/ok.... Silver Birds Steel Orchestra were amazing!! Do not miss it! We left the show buzzing. I also loved the fact I got to watch Cool Runnings while in Jamaica. RoomsWe had 3 rooms between the 9 of us including a plunge pool room and we were really pleased with the cleanliness, space and location. I emailed before we arrived to ask for rooms together. I also listed how many beds and what size in each room. They did not disappoint! We were all as near as we could be and the layout of each room was perfect for our group. I would absolutely recommend paying a bit more for a plunge pool room as we used it a lot! It was great for the time when some were getting ready and having showers etc. If you have young children it's also useful if one of them is napping and the others can still play. Also, our pool was in the shade late afternoon which was perfect when the kids needed to get out of the sun for a bit. By upgrading to a plunge pool room you also get alcohol in your mini bar and a slightly bigger room. Can't remember the name of our building but it was right next to the water park. Trips We did Dunns Falls and 2 of us went to Nine Mile. Both trips were great and as the hotel is small, it was nice to get out for a bit. Although Dunns advertise that walking up the falls is suitable for toddlers, we disagree!! We discovered one was too short and wasn't allowed and the other struggled so only made it half way. There is a path though that can be used instead. If you do Nine Mile definitely go on the Zion bus! It is fun!QuibblesAnd they really are minor quibbles because we LOVE this hotel.....Key cards - it would be great if the hotel sort their system out. We had to go back to reception many times to get it reprogrammed. It's not a major hassle but is a total pain when you are carrying a sleeping 3 year old and have to go all the way back ! We stopped carrying our phones but keys still kept going wrong.Internet - very hit and miss, didn't bother me but my teens moaned a bit! Entertainment- most main shows started at 9 which was a bit late for our little ones.SummaryAMAZING!! We all had a fab time. Some people have moaned its tired and scruffy. We disagree.... it's not the poshest we've stayed in but it's the BEST!! BOOK IT! :-)
Sorry this review is so late! I normally write my reviews as soon as I get back but this one slipped away from me. We loved this resort so much and had such a good experience that I felt I still had to review it even though it is a year later. That being said, I travelled a year ago in July 2016 with my family of 4 and my brother's family of 4. My self, husband and 2 boys aged 17 and 13 at the time stayed a week and we really loved it! The beach was beautiful and clean and we never had any issues getting chairs or towels. The pools were also nice, clean and we didn't find that they were crowded. The best thing about this trip for our kids was the Jewel Lagoon Water Park! My husband and I even enjoyed it there and we didn't find it to be crowded either. We did tend to goto the park in the later part of the afternoon after spending most of our day at the beach. The waterpark was great and appropriate for my children as well as my brother's girls who were younger, aged 6 and 12. Besides the rides and water fun at the Waterpark, there also was a lazy ride which I enjoyed. The hotel was beautiful and the grounds were kept very well as were the rooms. We didn't have any problems with our room so I was very happy. Our room had a resort view with a partial ocean view in the distance. The beds were comfortable and our boys were so happy because they had a twin bed each which is unusual since most times they have to share a queen size bed.The food was good and we were happy with it. My only complaint about the food was that all the restaurants with the exception of the Platinum Restaurant were some what outdoors and did NOT have air-conditioning! As the trip went on, I guess we got used to eating outdoors and some nights there was an ocean breeze so it wasn't always so hot but I would have preferred air conditioning when we were eating. We ate breakfast at the Coral Cafe Buffet and sometimes had dinner there too. Our favorite place for lunch was the Court Jesters. Their pizza was made fresh and considering we were in Jamaica, it was very good! We also ate at the Moonstone Restaurant for dinner and found the food to be good. Our 2 favorite places for dinner were the Jade Samurai because they cook right in front of you and the Platinum Restaurant because they had air conditioning and also presented your food and dessert in a unique way. There was a small game room that our kids used once and they had a pool table near the bar next to the Coral Cafe which my family used a few times while we were waiting for a show to start. The few shows we did catch were just ok. There was one particular show about a contortionist which was very good.We visited the Dunn's River Falls while we were there and my family loved it. This visit was one part of an excursion that we purchased at the resort. Another part of that excursion was a visit to Konoko Falls and Park which had some great views! The excursion also included a visit to an area where the locals were selling their handmade products and the excursion also included a trip to the souvenir shops. If I can make one recommendation about this, save your money and purchase at the souvenir shops or the airport. They had the same stuff and you didn't have to haggle with the locals, as that is what is custom to do when you are purchasing from them. They would start with ridiculous high prices and you had to work your way down. It was also extremely hot as they were selling their products in their own individual huts that were not air-conditioned or well lighted for that matter. Another thing we noticed is that some of the liquor was cheaper at the airport as were some of the souvenirs we purchased. The resort had some beautiful views at sunset so we took advantage of using their photographer to get some family photos at the beach during sunset time and we were very happy with the photos. We would definitely recommend this hotel and look forward to coming back here one day!
We've been vacationing at this resort for over 25 years - Jamaica Jamaica, Breezes and now Jewel. This may be our last vacation -time there. Other hotels in Jamaica offer stellar service, just as good or BETTER beach front & much better food for far less. Sorry folks but this hotel is in decline. We knew it when it was 4 star... now maybe 2 1/2. Some fine employees are there e.g. Frederick, Flo, Ann Marie and Sylvia . On another good note the Jamaica Independence Celebration this year was super: 10 out of 10. Congrats on that!
