Our Opinion

The Excellence is an amazing luxury hotel perfect for couples and honeymooners wanting to stay in Cancun. The resort grounds and rooms are elegant, modern, and immaculate. The staff is amazing here, going out of their way to ensure that you are getting the most out of your vacation. The view from the beach is incredible and the pools are amazing. There is never a shortage of loungers, so you don't have to ever play the 'towel game' with others. The quality of the food here is OK. The a la carte restaurants seem to be serving the same dishes and there are some inconsistencies with the the quality of food they serve at the buffets. Their attempt at seafood dishes are great though. Overall, this is an amazing spot for those wanting some R&R.

5 star honeymoon

We did a lot of research before coming here because we wanted to find the perfect honeymoon and we weren't disappointed. Right from the moment we arrived at the hotel the staff could not have been better there are so many to mention but the ones that stood out are lovely Christian the concierge he was a gem always checking things were ok ,also David around the hotel pool bringing us our drinks before we had even asked and Jacqueline and Lizbeth in the Toscana knew our names from day one giving the personnel touch. We also want to mention cindy on the beach bar and Jesus in the lobster house but to be fair we didn't meet any staff that didn't say hello or ask how we were getting on. We never had a problem getting a bed by the pool or on the beach despite the hotel being mostly full. Our room was beautiful we didn't bother with the upgrade cos you really don't need to we stayed in room 1201 on the 2nd floor and had a view of the lazy river it was also quite close to everything. The hotel entertainment was ok the jersey boys were very good. We have stayed in lots of 5 star hotels and really have to say this was one of the best I can't understand people who have complained about thing like the door of the bathroom this is a couples hotel for goodness sake.

10 days of happiness

I would like to start by saying that we have had an AI holiday at least once every year for the last 5-6 years now. This is our second time in Mexico albeit our first time at this resort. I fell in love with the resort after watching a youtube video and was happy to see that First Choice offered this as a resort in their brochure. In the shop the Travel Agent did her best to match the online price we had found which included a terraced plunge pool suite. We booked it some 400 days in advance so when the time came to leave for the holiday I was more than ready for the break. Quickly to say Gatwick was effortless as always. Unbeknown to us you get the use of Premium security check-in as well as access to a lounge and it was a great way to start the holiday. The flight left on time and was quite pleasant considering the travel time. At the other end we breezed through security and were greeted by several Thomson agents who swiftly advised us that we would be getting a taxi to the resort with one other couple. Happy days. On arrival we were greeted with a cold towel and a glass of sparkling wine. We checked in very quick and were delighted to find out we had been upgraded to a RTT, we were given a copy of the days Excellence times (little newspaper of the days events, open restaurants, drink of the days, excursions and daily specials). We were located in building one in room 1402. It was wonderful. Lovely and quiet on the top floor and it had great views of the lazy river, spa and the ocean in the distance. Our luggage was taken to our room for us and we quickly stripped down into our bathers and headed for the RTT pool. We arrived around 3-4ish. It was quite cloudy so there didn't appear to be much sun on the terrace and the plunge pool was a little cold but we would come to appreciate this in the blistering heat (you can request the pool to be heated). We were surprised to see that none of the evening restaurants were buffet. Not something I have ever experienced on a AI holiday but we actually loved this. We got dressed and headed to Toscana where we were advised there was a 45 minute wait. We were tired (been up almost 24 hours at this point) so at the time this wasn't so great but we decided to head to the infamous Martini bar where we first met Hugo. He kept us hydrated with lots of French Martinis and good laughs. Our bleeper didn't go off after an hour so we asked what was going on and were advised that they paged us like 10 minutes ago. I know this not to be true as we had it out on the table with us and it never flashed. We were sat swiftly and enjoyed the food greatly. We both had the linguini and it was delicious. As were the breads with oils. It was a great first night in the end and when we returned to our room tomorrows excellence times was waiting for us (we really looked forward to seeing this every evening) we went to bed with a little buzz on. We woke up early the next morning to enjoy the sunrise from our Terrace. We headed down to the main pool at 6.30 (we like to enjoy the early morning sun) and found loungers. We then went for a quick walk on the beach to try to get our bearings and gain some perspective as to the size of the resort and then headed back to Toscana for buffet breakfast. I had a freshly prepared omelette almost every morning we ate there and it was always spot on. My husband enjoyed the poached eggs and eggs benedict from the room service menu (which is included in the AI).The maîtres d's soon remembered our name at breakfast and our room number and it really took me by surprise it was wonderful. It made us feel more than just another couple on holiday but that we were special. The main pool is medium size and spreads around into a lazy river. The water again was a little cold but it was a nice reprieve from the blistering heat which was at times 29 degrees by 8:30am. The bars opened at 10:00am and there was lounger service pretty much all day. The Sol bar offers more then just drinks. They also have a small Pizza menu which is cooked fresh. Lunch options are typically the Toscana for a buffet, The Grill and The Lobster which is ordered from the menu. The real lunch time gem is Las Olas which can be found on the beach behind the main pool. Check your Excellence times as the theme changes each day. We loved the Rock and Burger, Mongolian and Italian. We missed Paella both times sadly but it smelled incredible. For the first few days a typical day involved waking up early, heading to the main pool to secure a lounger with palapas (there are considerably more palapas here than any other resort I have been too). We would then head for breakfast and then come back and enjoy the early sun until 10 ish when we would take a dip have a drink and enjoy the pool loungers. By 1ish we would head for lunch and then back to our room to enjoy our RTT and the private plunge pool (which had sun all day). Come 4-5 we would start to get ready for the evening. This always involved a pre-meal drink with Hugo at the Martini bar and usually allot of Grasshopper cocktails after our food. We didn't try all of the restaurants because to be frank we didn't like some of the menu's. Our favourites in order were Chez Isabelle (listen to the waiters recommendations you wont be sorry), Basmati, Las Olas (only open for lunch) Spice, Flavour Market and Toscana. The food in Toscana was good but it was always let down a little in the evening by the service, which was in no way bad but just not up to the same level as everywhere else. Special mentions to Alonso in Chez, Alan at Las Olas and Luis at Basmati. The food at this resort blew us away. By far the best AI food we have ever tasted and our meal at Chez was better than most of the posh restaurants back home! I struggle to understand why people have such issue with the food here and I can only deduce that they either eat at 5* eateries all the time or they don't know good food. We returned to all the restaurants twice and they were consistent. I don't know how the resort cooks it lamb and beef but my god it was so tender. Highly recommend the Lamb Rogan Josh in Basmati and the Filet Mignon in Chez. I am not massive red meat person because it is either tough. or fatty or grissly but that Filet was incredible. After about 5-6 days the main pool became too rowdy for us. Several groups of couples arrived and the scene became a less relaxed and more social which as introverts didn't suit us. At this point we moved to the beach and I am so glad we did. The sea had the most beautiful temperature and the breeze was wonderful. There is a mix of plastic and wooden loungers and also bali beds for non EC guests. During our stay we had 1.5 days of torrential rain. Its Mexico it happens. We didn't mind it at all as it gave us an excuse to see the rest of the resort without sweating like a pig. We made use of the time by playing pool, table tennis, visiting Aroma (great coffee and cake selection) and also chess. We spent some time in our room in the hot tub watching the storm and took full advantage of the room service menu which was always prompt, hot and tasty. Christian our concierge was also wonderful. He asked how we were every morning and evening and always asked if there was anything he could do for us. He even apologised for the weather (which is of course not his fault). He had been receiving lots of complaints it turned out about the weather, which just made us laugh. How can anyone hold a person accountable for the weather. If you want to ensure you wont get any rain don't holiday in Mexico. Try somewhere like Egypt instead. We did have some small issues on this holiday. Our neighbours one night decided to host a party in their room. Whilst we did not complain I was happy to hear someone from the resort knock on the door at around 2.30 to ask them to be quiet. Which they promptly did. We also had this trip booked for our 5th wedding anniversary and Birthdays. We spoke to Vilma before arriving (Vilma is apparently the very best). She advised we could have the room decorated on a specific night which was agreed as the 22nd of April. I asked for the room to be done whilst we were out for our evening meal between 7-8. We came back to our room gone 9 and it wasn't decorated at all. I emailed Vilma and asked for it to be re-arranged before we left on the 26th. She never got back to us. I still don't have an email from her to this day (29th). Our room keys also stopped working at least 3 times during the holiday so we had to keep getting them reset at reception. None of these things impacted our enjoyment of the resort or our holiday although the lack of response from Vilma has left a little taste in mouth. In all we totally loved this resort. Hugo at the Martini bar became like a friend I was glad to see every evening. He knew when our last day was (I still don't know how) and he always made sure our glass was never empty. Him and Caesar are perhaps some of the best the resort has to offer and I can 100% tell you it is the staff that will have us return to this resort again in the future. The resort itself is medium size. It never felt at capacity despite the fact that it was. We never felt rushed, or forced to tip and always felt valued and were often remembered which astounded me. The grounds are beautiful and really well kept. Allot of hard work goes into this. The walkways etc do look a little tired in comparison to the crispness of the finest next door but it doesn't detract from the beauty of the place. We didn't do any excursions and never left the resort. We both have very demanding jobs with long hours and so we just wanted to switch off from the world which we did. This holiday costs us in the region of £5,000 for 10 nights staying in a RTT room (private plunge pool on roof). This price also included premium club on Thomson's Dreamliner. We will return 100%, I just hope Hugo is still there when we do :D.As a side there is also a page on facebook "We love excellence playa mujeres". It is a great place for tips and recommendations for things to do. However, be careful. Several of the regular commenters have been going to this resort for years and do as a result receive special little perks. It is easy to have your expectations set too high listening to their stories and little extras/special service and it could be easy to feel a little sad when you don't receive the same. Thankfully we arn't that way inclined particularly but we know of other couples who are. That said we didn't feel second class in anyway and were treated perfectly. We felt that Americans were naturally more conversational than we were as Brits with the staff so often enjoyed deeper holiday relationships with the staff. I think it that this is one partly due to the British demeanour and 2 also due to the fact that myself and my husband are fairly introverted. Despite this we still struck great relationships with Hugo, Caesar, Alan, Luis and Christian which really goes to show something about the staff and how wonderful they are. Other things to note. The WIFI is great at this resort. The minibar was always full and well stocked. The rooms were always cleaned everyday and the evening turndown service was great. Pokémon Go is a must here if you use it. The variety of Pokémon is much better than back home and there is a gym at the resort. We always found a pool floatie when we wanted to use one and the floaties were really good. You cant use your own floats in the pool but you can on the beach and in your rooftop pool (which we did). We totally felt this resort was worth every penny we paid. We worked so hard to go on this holiday and I felt that it exceeded my expectations. I am happy to call myself a EPM Addict!!As a final note, allot of people go to this hotel expecting perfection. Perhaps that is because it is number 1 in the world currently for AI resorts. I would just like to say that perfection is subjective. This resort is hands down better in everyway TO US than any other resort we have been to both internationally and European.Happy to answer any questions you might have.

PERFECTO !

Excellence is the only word to describe this resort. This is my second trip here and I can now see why according to TripAdvisor of the top 25 All-Inclusive resorts in the world, this is ranked #1. The main pool is the heart of the resort and where all the activity is. The swim up bar and the SOL bar are busy all the time. At the SOL bar you can also have pizza during the day. All top shelf liquor is always available. The entertainment people are always trying to keep you busy with water aerobics, guessing games, water volleyball, bingo, and on Saturday and Monday pineapple and coconut carving instruction which you can participate in and get one for yourself. The service at the pool as far as the servers and bartenders is next to none. The one thing that impresses me about at this resort is the absence of any attitudes. The beach area since my last visit is quite dramatic with the addition of the beach grill and the amount of seating that is available. I was quite surprised at the amount of people that went directly to the beach as opposed to the main pool. The grounds of the resort are simply spotless and always being attended to. No matter where you go every person in whatever capacity they serve always greets you with a smile and a greeting. The rooms are all suites and top notch. Overall the food was very good, perhaps not what you may have expected but a wide selection of choices and the staff was always eager to please you if something was not as you thought it would be. Once again I must stress, no attitudes and always working at a fast pace to serve your every need. I have been traveling for over 50 years and this is as close to perfection as you are going to get. It's like a fine oiled machine and all the parts are poetry in motion. I have over 300 reviews since relocating to So Cal in 2007 and before that I traveled the Carribean for decades and have seen it all. Resorts like you to earmark certain outstanding workers but for me to that would be an insult to so many if I forgot to mention them so I will say that the staff here are the best of the best. I can only say to you to trust me in that if there is any way to ever come here, put it on your bucket list and do it !

Perfection

Second time at EPM. This resort has consistently been rated 5 stars on Trip Adviser so I was not sure if I could add anything. The resort is North of Cancun in a quiet location, no nightlife. Everything you need is in this adults only, all inclusive resort. There are excursions available, but we were here to relax and everything we wanted was in the resort.Maybe next time the nearby golf course might get a visit! The private transfer from the office is worthwhile, they meet you just outside the airport terminal across the road. It can be quite chaotic there so a private air conditioned 4 x 4 is a welcome luxury. The resort is about 35 minutes depending on traffic. You are met at reception with a cold towel and glass of champagne.Mainly couples at the resort although there are some family groups or larger parties. The premium excellence club check in is in a separate club house in block 8 which a bellboy will take you too.The excellence club is a nice addition, with slightly better located rooms, the clubhouse, dedicated concierge and separate pools and beach area (recently expanded). The beach loungers are better quality than on the main beach. However those choosing not to go excellence club seem equally well provided for and so it is something that isn't necessary to feel you are being treated well (unlike Sandals where those without a butler are second class citizens.)The rooms all have balcony's with day beds. The swim up rooms are on the ground floor and the rooftop rooms have a terrace with private plunge pool. Our first visit we had a rooftop room but to be honest didn't really use it much, just as happy with a standard room. The rooms are well equipped with separate jacuzzi, large four poster bed, seating area and bathroom area with large walk in shower. As to be expected there are bathrobes, toiletries, hairdryer, safe, walk in closet, and mini bar with premium spirits. Champagne was left in an ice bucket with the turn down service several nights, not sure if this was normal or because we were return guests.Service in the restaurants, beach and housekeeping is all excellent. The staff are well trained and welcoming. We did take small denomination $ for tips although it is not expected by the staff. The restaurants are all good. Check the daily newsletter as each restaurant closes occasionally. There is also a dress code requiring collars and trousers for men.The French restaurant Chez Isabelle is particularly good as is the beachside grill.Breakfast buffet at Toscana is where we headed most mornings. Al last carte breakfasts at the lobster house. Alternative is the coffee shop on the second floor above main reception, with sandwiches, yogurts, cake or ice cream. We were too full for lunch most days. There is a beachside buffet with different foods and sometimes a band playing. Fresh pizzas are available at the beachside bar. The restaurants are also open for a more formal lunch. The excellence club also has snacks and nibbles.Entertainment has something for everyone, there is different entertainment every evening, from casino evenings, to singers, dancers and tribute acts in the spacious open theatre. The sports bar has a DJ later in the night and there is a new bar area on the beach. The martini bar in the main building is very good for pre or post dinner drinks. There is plenty of entertainment in the day and lots of activities. We did the bike ride and there are yoga classes at the beach lounge at 7.30 am but that was a bit too early. The pool areas have plenty of sun beds and quieter areas or there is the main pool with swim up bar. Yes some people are up early to put towels on their favorite sun beds. In the excellence club area where the staff make up your sun beds there is better monitoring and if a sun bed is abandoned it is made available for others. I did overhear someone complaining at reception about reserved sun beds at the main pool. The juice bar is good for healthy drinks if you need a break from the cocktails. The spa is amazing.Look out for the daily offers - the excellence couples massage was superb, and the hydrotherapy session before the massage (free with the excellence club) was really invigorating and fun. At check out we were asked for feedback or anything we would change no we couldn't think of anything. Just looking forward to our next recharge / relax at EPM

5th trip the best yet 😀

We have just made our 5th trip to this wonderful hotel we have come to consider our second home. As always our holiday was perfectly arranged by Blue Bay travel who introduced us to EPM 4 years ago. This trip was Twelve nights. On arrival we were greeted by the wonderful Carolina Paz Guest Services Manager with 2. Glasses of champagne and a beautiful smile. This lady works tirelessly to ensure that all her guests have the very best holiday possible. We were escorted to the Excellence Club to do our check-in and was delighted that the EC club manager Dal Nasta Would be doing our check-in. We have come to love Dal she is so caring and completed our check-in her usual efficient way. Pedro our concierge was also waiting to meet us. Pedro is a fabulous guy, he came to see us every day to make sure we had everything we needed. He loves his job caring for his guests and he made our holiday so special. Our room was in our favourite location block 8b we had an Excellence Club Ocean front 3rd floor. We stayed in this room a year ago when celebrating my 50th birthday so it was wonderful to be allocated this gorgeous room again. We had our Baileys and extra hangers as requested and the gorgeous swan towel display on the bed. After unpacking we went for our first dinner at The Grill steakhouse it was absolutely delicious and the hostess Tracy made sure we had a lovely table overlooking the sea. We made our way to the Martini Bar and met up with our special group of friends who we had met via the "we love EPM" Facebook page. As always fabulous service from Hugo and Cesar. We had breakfast at either the lobster house or Toscana, both excellent with fabulous service from Freddy at the Lobster House and Tonitua at Toscana. We also loved seeing the lovely hostesses Jakeline, Liz and Shelly.Every day was spent on the EC beach the concierge team of Manuel, Edgar, Erick, Alejandro and Diego made sure we always had our beds made up and brought us little treats each day. The beach is very beautiful and we were served drinks directly to our sunbed by the lovely Rubi. There is a great choice of lunchtime options, buffet at Toscana, a la carte at the lobster house or grill. Freshly cooked pizza at the pool or different themes in the beach restaurant las olas. Even a great choice of bar food served at your sunbed. My favourite day is Rock and Burger when you get the most fabulous burgers from Las Olas and the rock band plays. The choice of restaurants is superb the Food and Beverages Guest Services Manager Nelson Kalixto ensures all the restaurants and bars are meeting guests needs. He is such a nice guy always making sure his guests are happy. The bartenders are great guys, Diego at the swimup, David at pool eight b, Cesar and Hugo at the Martini Bar all make wonderful cocktails and ensure guests have a great night. This time we met the lovely Tonitua who is the most friendly happy bartender he made me his special orange chocolate martini which is the best cocktail Inhave ever tasted. Tonitua works in kafe kafe and the Martini bar. The coffee shop aroma has gorgeous coffee,s, sandwiches and cakes also ice cream and crepes. We had wonderful meals every single evening. Our special dinner with friends at the Lobster House had to be moved to Toscana due to it raining but they brought the staff and menu so that we could still have the experience. We were able to eat at the lobster house on a second occasion and had the most fabulous service from Angel. We enjoyed beautiful food at Basmati and great service from Luis and Maury who selected our menu for us. We tried the Grill. Spice and Agave all food and service was wonderful. A special treat having flaming Mayan coffee which is a show in itself. Our favourite restaurant is Chez Isabelle we Celebrated spending fifty nights during this holiday and a beautiful meal on the private terrace was arrange for us by Nelson and Carolina. It was the most romantic night with beautiful food and special service from Cesar. We had a special cake made for our fifty nights in the shape of the EPM logo. When we got back to our room It was beautifully decorated and the jacuzzi filled with warm water and rose petals. Ther was a bottle of champagne on ice and chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us.It was a fabulous fun filled holiday and one that we will never forget. EPM is wonderful the staff are its biggest assets they all do their upmost to make sure every guest has a wonderful time. The rooms are comfortable and luxurious. The standard of food and drinks is superb the pools and beach are amazing. We love this resort and have booked our sixth visit for October this year.Thank you to everyone for making our holiday full of happy memories and the most wonderful time.
