Our Opinion

The Excellence is an amazing luxury hotel perfect for couples and honeymooners wanting to stay in Cancun. The resort grounds and rooms are elegant, modern, and immaculate. The staff is amazing here, going out of their way to ensure that you are getting the most out of your vacation. The view from the beach is incredible and the pools are amazing. There is never a shortage of loungers, so you don't have to ever play the 'towel game' with others. The quality of the food here is OK. The a la carte restaurants seem to be serving the same dishes and there are some inconsistencies with the the quality of food they serve at the buffets. Their attempt at seafood dishes are great though. Overall, this is an amazing spot for those wanting some R&R.

Another Visit To EPM

After spending a very enjoyable week at the Finest, we strolled over to EPM to spend the last two weeks of our holiday. It made a nice change to arrive at EPM not feeling jaded from a long transatlantic flight. We were greeted with big smiles and hugs from Vilma Montalvo and Carolina Paz and were quickly checked in and shown to our room. As we walked though the immaculate hotel grounds, we felt as if we had never been away. The room, was as always super clean, and contained a beautiful bouquet and a bottle of bubbly on on ice. One of the first changes that we noticed was the new balcony furniture - a definite improvement on the previous table and chair set.We quickly unpacked and got ourselves organised, then sat on the balcony with a cocktail, enjoying the view until it was time to get ready for dinner. The first port of call was the Martini bar where we were greeted by the unique double act that is Cesar and Hugo who made our favourite drinks without having to ask us what we wanted. How do they remember? The double act were very ably assisted by Job and our old friend Heydi. Dinner was at our favourite restaurant, Basmati. Hugs from Angel, our waiter and Tracy the manageress. Oscar came over to our table to say hello, and we enjoyed a really nice meal. Back to the Martini bar where we met up with Colin and Lynn our UK friends and a really nice evening ensued (over served, as usual, by Cesar and Hugo)! The following day, we slipped into our normal routine - breakfast at the Toscana buffet (hugs and kisses from the hostesses Lizeth, Shelly and Fanny plus a new girl Diana). Then to the beach where for two weeks we were really well looked after by Ignacio and Cesar the beach concierges. Raquel and Juliana were constantly ensuring that we had enough to drink. We were a little surprised that the EC pools were cold and not heated as they usually were at this time of year so we mostly stuck to the beach for our time there, and swam in the ocean which was warmer than the pools.Lunch was usually at Toscana where the buffet options were plentiful and varied, and we were well looked after by the ‘Morning Girls’.During our stay we were sought out and greeted by old EPM staff friends Gwendoline, Jakeline, Nelson Kalixto (who was constantly checking that we were happy, and never seems to get tired) Nayeli Carmona the spa manageress ( who kindly arranged for my wife to have a special massage to relieve a cricked and painful neck). Carolina Paz would find us daily to ensure that everything was good and she introduced us to Gloria who was taking some of the strain from her. We were also very happy to see Jesus Ciau who we have known for quite a time; he does a great job as drinks manager. We noticed quite a few changes from our previous visits and I have to say that not all of them were good as far as we were concerned. Several staff members have moved on, and the new furniture and decor in some of the restaurants seemed to change the ambiance of romance and luxury. The reduced menu in Flavour Market (tapas) didn’t bother us, although portions have been reduced, and we did not care for the new menu in Barcelona or the tables & chairs. It was nice to see that Pedro had moved back to where he belongs as the manager of Chez Isabelle which was one of the restaurants we went to more than once. We stuck to our favourite places for dinner (Chez, Basmati, Flavour Market, Spice and Agave). We were happy to see the beautiful Christmas decorations put up while we were there. They really are spectacular.Overall we had a great time, but I have to say that there seemed to be an undefinable ‘something’ missing compared to previous visits. Because of this, I give it a score of 4 instead of the usual 5.

We'll Definitely Be Back

My wife and I just returned from Excellence Resort where we celebrated our 20th anniversary. It was absolutely the best vacation either of us have ever had, together or seperately. The moment we walked into the lobby we started to relax. The fragrance in there was wonderful, and it remained that way for the duration of our stay. The accomodations, architecture, lanscaping, service, food and spirits were all exceptional! The staff always said 'hola' with a smile, no matter where we were on the property. We had a junior suite with a large balcony which afforded us a beautiful view of the Caribbean, the flora and one of the many pools below. There was a two-person lounger and a two-top table on the balcony, as well as an indoor/outdoor jetted tub which my wife really enjoyed. When we entered our suite we were greeted by champagne on ice, fresh flowers, mini desserts and two geese made out of towels, coverd in fresh red rose petals, with their heads forming a heart. It was absolutely beautiful! The suite also incuded premium spirits, wine, a stocked mini bar with beer, soft drinks, bottled water, cookies and candy, and an espresso machine with three different types of espresso. Everything was restocked daily, and they gladly agreed to change out the Merlot for Cabernet. They also brought and assorment of fresh treats and candy every day.The suite also afforded us access to the Excellence Club Lounge which included a private bar, fresh tea, coffee, pastries, etc. As soon as we sat down to check in Fernanda offered us a cocktail of our choice. As it was our anniversary, we chose champagne, which we really enjoyed. They offered Dubois champagne, which we had at many of the bars and restaurants. We really can't say enough about how great the service was, how friendly the staff was and the beauty of the landscaping, architecture, beach and sea. Of special note, we would like to give credit to some of the staff that really went above and beyond; 1) Ignacio - Our beach concierge who made our days muy excellente! He encouraged us to write this review.2) Angel - Our waiter ar Basmati (our favorite restaurant) who made our anniversary dinner extra special.3) Francisco - The entertainment director who made sure the good times kept rolling throughout our stay.4) Fernanda - The desk clerk in the Excellence Club who greeted us so warmly when we arrived.Lastly, we have a few constructive criticisms:1) The house wines left something to be desired. If you're a liquor drinker, you'll love it! All of the spirits are top shelf, and we really enjoyed the frozen margaritas and martinis while we were there. However, Donna and I are primarily wine drinkers. We're hopeful that Excellence will upgrade their brand of house wine before we return.2) I got bacon on my club sandwich that was completely raw when we had lunch at The Lobster House.3) We were awakened at 8:30 one morning by a very pleasant staff member who apparently knocked on the wrong door.4) Both the towels and toilet tissue could definitely be softer. They were both entirely too rough.5) We were not at all impressed with our personal concierge, Roberto. He did not even introduce himself to us until he found us eating lunch on the 4th day of our stay, he mistakenly thought we were leaving the following morning, and after promissing to send a bottle of champagne to our room he failed to follow through. When I called hours later to find out when/if it would be arriving, I was told that he had already left for the day. Overall, despite the aforementioned minor issues, our anniversary vacation was truly excellent. Excellence Resort most certainly lives up to it's name and we highly recommend it. We will be returning soon and often!

Welcome Home- Excellence Style

Once again, we were welcomed home to our Excellence family for our 5th trip.Doroteo was there to greet us when we go off our private best day shuttle, such a wonderful smile to see! Check-in was smooth, as usual and we were off to our rooms. We quickly change and head for supper. We tried Falvor Market for the first time and had Damien, who was GREAT! He took our menus and said ' let me take care of you' He brought out the mot delicious dishes! We will for sure be going back again to try more out!Breakfast is always at Toscana, we love it here, but more importantly we love the people in the morning. Lizeth and Shehily are our absolute favorite breakfast girls and we will miss Shehily tremendously. To greet us inside is Fernando- what a smile! He is so so great, we always sat in his section!Shout out to Caesar and Hugo behind the martini bar- every night we spend at least one (more likely two) drinks at the bar just watching the magic happen. We also love to he Heydi every time as she always welcomes us back with a hug! Our evening at Toscana was great, Omar took great care of us, and we love the bread and Parmesan cheese wheel! The lobster house is another great night restaurant, we had Lorenzo who recommended great dishes for us all! We traveled over New Years and had Sergio as our table waiter- what a great guy! took such great care of us and we had to go visit him at Basmati twice more after that! We did the Mongolia grill for lunch on the beach (MUST TRY!) Alan takes wonderful care of you in Los Olas and made sure we came back for another beach lunch, just to see him!Chez Isabelle is one of our absolute favorite places to eat- we had many meals here, all of which were so so good. Try the onion soup! Cesar made us feel at home here and we went back on our last night to celebrate!I cannot say enough about our beach waiter Emiliano, he is FANTASTIC. This is our second time with him and he is so so great! Kudos to him for always keeping us hydrated. During his first morning round after about the first day he would have cold water AND our first drink without us asking. He is part of the reason we continue to sit on the beach where we do, we hope to see him again!Shout out to both Carolina and Nelson- they never disappoint. Always finding us throughout the resort and making sure everything was taken care of- and of course it was! This place has a special place in our hearts as I got engaged and married here... however the reason we continue to come back is the STAFF. The staff are what make this resort what it is, and I will continue to come back as long as our Excellence family is there. Can't wait to be welcomed home again in March 2018 and Christmas 2019!

Relaxing Holidays

Cheers to another fabulous and relaxing trip to one of our favorite adults-only resorts. The Excellence brand checks off every must-have quality we look for in a vacation, which is why we have returned for multiple trips and will return again in the future. The entertainment, music and activities are plentiful, but it’s the staff that are the heart of this property. Manuel, Juliana, Raquel, and Edgar took great care of us on the EC beach, while Floricel and Diego took over on the days we settled at main pool. As always, Hugo and Caesar were the rock stars of the martini bar. All of our meals were outstanding, but if we had to choose a favorite, it would have to be the evening we spent at Basmati, where we asked Oscar to choose the menu for us. I always shed a few tears when we have to leave this beautiful place, but with a twinkle in my eye that the next countdown is already in the works.

COMPARE: Excellence Playa Mujeres vs. Secrets Maroma vs. Secrets Puerto Los Cabos

Why you can trust our review:My wife and I took a 3 week honeymoon covering 3 different resorts for 1 week each in Mexico: Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort (4.5 ⭐️), Excellence Playa Mujeres (5⭐️), and Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun (4.5⭐️). After seeing the pros and cons of each place, we wanted to write a review of each so other honeymooners like ourselves can make the most informed decision about where to go. We will be doing a category head to head comparison with a winner in each category. Long story Short: the online ratings are very accurate. The Excellence was our favorite of the 3 because it had a pool that was far better than the others. It had a long lazy river style pool and many separate pools and private lounging areas that made the grounds feel endless and private. Furthermore, the room was much more spacious and the amenities included were awesome: a private 2nd floor deck with a large plunge pool and outdoor shower, large private liquor cabinet and snacks/drinks, and a 2 nozzle shower just to name a few. The cleaning service was great and included artistically shaped towel display in the form of swan/heart shapes sprinkled with rose petals. Our only complaints were that the weather in Cancun is a little risky because it rains (therefore making it green and beautiful), and when it rains the mosquitoes come out and attack! The food was good, however, it was actually lower quality than the two Secrets resorts we visited.Biggest pros:Room, Pool, serviceBiggest cons:Potential for bad weather, mosquitoesComparing the 3:Premium Upgrade Club:The upgrade for the premium club is only worth it at the Excellence. It included a separate lounge with 3 small buffet style meals and a bar (similar to the Secrets resorts). What made it better was the quality of food and the pristine and lavish decor of the space. They had a high-end Nespresso coffee maker in this lounge, which was not available into the Secrets premium lounges. Excellence was the only resort to have a private beach and pool area reserved for premium members. These areas included complimentary sunscreen, bug spray, etc. Secrets Cabo had the 2nd best lounge but no outdoor amenities. The Spa:My wife and I had complimentary massages at each of the 3 resorts with the honeymoon package. The best experience was at Secrets Maroma because on top of the 50 minute massage, they let us enjoy the facilities afterwards (jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, hydrotherapy circuit). Cabo was a close second because I think secrets spas are run by the same company. The excellence was the worst because the massage was only 20 mins long and left us feeling very oily and gross. They also rushed us out of the place during the hydrotherapy circuit, and we didn't get to enjoy each part. Excellence did not provide the relaxing and accommodating service you would expect from a spa.Activities:The entertainment team at each resort were very friendly. I would say the Excellence and Secrets Maroma were tied and Secrets Cabo was in last place. This was because Cabo had fewer activities since beach access was limited. Beach volleyball was my daily exercise at Excellence and Secrets Maroma, and I made good friends due to being a part of these outdoor activities.Beach:Secrets Maroma had the best beach, with plenty of lounge room and activities. Excellence was second, however, with the premium access, the lounge area was quite comparable. The ocean was the best at Secrets Maroma because of the bright colors, flat beach, and clean sand near the shoreline. It was fun to see all the water sports and activities(such as kayaking and windsurfing) done by the resort.Pool:The Excellence won its 5 stars in large part due to its amazing pool facilities. There were plenty of different pool areas to explore, water beds and lounges to try, and a very popular swim up bar. The pools are inlaid with colorful tiles, have hammocks hanging over the pools, and are kept immaculately clean.Although Cabo and Secrets Maroma had good swim up bars, the pools at Maroma were by far the worst. However, a good beach set up made this bearable. Cabo had a few good pool options, each with the infinity pool style which was very classy.Nightlife:The best entertainment shows were at Secrets Maroma. Although one was a bit risqué and caused some tension amongst a lot of the anniversary/honeymooner couples, the musical performers were great. The Excellence is the second runner up for best nightlife because of the fire show and relatively young aged crowd. It was easy for us to find other couples and make friends there. However, the shows were a bit sub par. Similar to Secrets Maroma, there was a Burlesque show that was too sensual for a honeymooners/couples resort and caused some tension.Secrets Cabo is dead at night and not the place to go if you enjoy late nights.Hotel guests:The youngest guests were at the Excellence. Almost all of the guests were there to celebrate either their honeymoon or anniversary. Secrets Maroma had a nice blend of young and old, but Cabo was almost all middle aged/older people.Weather:Because of Secrets Maroma and Excellence's location in Cancun, there was more humidity and more rain than we would have preferred. Secrets Cabo had perfect weather every day, and you really felt the dry heat of the desert climate there. However, the rain maid Cancun very lush and green in contrast to Cabo.Food:Secrets Maroma has the best food by far. If you are a food lover, it may be worth sacrificing a good pool area for the resort with the better food quality. The breakfast buffet had crepe and omelette stations, a large assortment of tropical fruits, fresh squeezed juice, and a almost every other breakfast food you could want, all kept fresh and clean.Gym:Excellence has the best gym out of the three as it has a large array of weight lifting machines, many treadmills, and an additional room with mats for stretching, yoga, and fitness classes.Secrets Maroma is the runner up for second best gym. The gym is well kept, has refreshing Gatorade, cold cloths, and water, but is not as spacious as the Excellence gym.Secrets Cabo has the worst gym as it is small and doesn't have the variety of weight lifting equipment that the other two resorts had to offer.
