Our Opinion

The Excellence is an amazing luxury hotel perfect for couples and honeymooners wanting to stay in Cancun. The resort grounds and rooms are elegant, modern, and immaculate. The staff is amazing here, going out of their way to ensure that you are getting the most out of your vacation. The view from the beach is incredible and the pools are amazing. There is never a shortage of loungers, so you don't have to ever play the 'towel game' with others. The quality of the food here is OK. The a la carte restaurants seem to be serving the same dishes and there are some inconsistencies with the the quality of food they serve at the buffets. Their attempt at seafood dishes are great though. Overall, this is an amazing spot for those wanting some R&R.

Minor details made things really disappointed

First of all, I paid extra for an "Ocean Front" room, their words. When we checked in we learned that what they call "ocean front, doesn't mean ocean front at this hotel it means ocean view." They actually said this. To me, this is an extremely important detail that started me off on the wrong foot. Of course, they did have a few rooms that were right off the ocean but those were called "roof top suites," and I was not about to pay more.Next, smoking is everywhere. All day trying to relax on the beach people are smoking. They should have a designated area, its not fair that I have to breath smoke in everywhere I sit trying to enjoy the beachfront, sitting on my balcony, even in the pool. Finally, the restaurants are understaffed. Every night there is an hour wait at the restaurants, yet there are always many tables open. The last note is about the beach itself. The beach is lovely, however the water has no waves like you expect if you have been to Cancun before. The Isla Mujeres which is a couple of miles off shore breaks the waves which keeps the water calm, but, you cant hear the "ocean sound" from your room or get the typical swimming in the waves experience-- also something I wish was explained before hand. I realize these are my preferences, but had I known I would have gone somewhere else.

Honeymoon

Extremely happy with our choice of destination for our honeymoon. The reviews are brilliant and the resort certainly loves up to the expectation. We went for two weeks and loved every minute. The service was fantastic and especially enjoyed the service from Jesus at the Cafe Kafe bar in the evenings and during the day David was brilliant on making sure I was topped up with beers in the pool. The food was excellent and the cleanliness of the room and grounds were spot on. We would definitely recommend this resort to anyone and I'm sure when we next visit Cancun, this will be the place we come back to.

SMB way better than EPM

So, I am here now with a group of 8 other couples and so far I am extremely disappointed. We have been to Secrets Maroma Beach 5 times and we decided to try something new this year and so far, I wish we wouldn't have. For starters, I feel bad, recommending this resort to my 16 other friends here with us who also love SMB.I will update this review if by the time we leave, something changes but so far I am less than impressed. My reasons for the comparison are, the service here is TERRIBLE compared to SMB. We are waving money in the air, and still can't get waitresses to deliver us drinks poolside. Also, the drink menu isn't as good or as festive as SMB. They also have no beachside bar with swings or anything like that. Next, the beach is sub-par in every sense of the word, which I knew going in it wasn't going to be the same caliber, but I didn't know how entirely different-not in a good way.The bed is hard as a rock and we each only have one pillow and the jacuzzi in our room has moldy, disgusting jets. I have called twice asking if I could get some cleaning supplies to clean it myself and they told me they would not allow me to, so I had to call 2 more times and finally someone came but it's still not clean with moldy jets. We also had to call twice for a premium liquor for our excellence club rooms, and more towels. I am not nit picky by any means but after spending more here than at SMB, I'm expecting way better and everything is worse. There's relatively no nightlife (no club) and room service took over an hour. We had to tip our hostess at Toscana $20 to put us a table together in an empty restaurant which peeved us. On the flip side, so far the only thing positive I can say about this resort was the food at toscana was very good and our waiter took great care of us. There was also a very speedy bartender at the main lobby bar who was a wiz with cocktails. We will be trying out the spa tomorrow. If you're deciding between excellence playa mujeres and secrets maroma beach. It's no contest in my opinion, secrets hands down for the most beautiful beaches, beautiful pools, and excellent service. They also have delicious food, and fun nightlife. Their beds also feel like heaven and aren't hard as a rock like here.

Great All-Inclusive Mexican Resort with Private Beaches

My boyfriend and I stayed here for five days. We booked the Excellence Club option, which comes with better in-room mini bar selections, access to a particular beach area with concierge, access to a club (though we never went because it was just a quiet bar with no view or liveliness), and a beach bag; did not see much other benefits apart from these. The resort has, I think, 10 restaurants. Our favorites were: The Grill for lunch, which has smaller portion sizes unlike the buffet options, which I liked; Chez Isabelle (French), which was the fanciest of the restaurants; and Flavor Market, which had Iberian ham included in the inclusive package, which was shocking. The service was pretty good, though I felt like we got less attention because my boyfriend and I were not as loud (e.g., the quiet couples go unnoticed). Hugo at the bar in the main building was awesome, and the beach was beautiful and secluded (as opposed to overrun with tourists and locals). The resort definitely caters to couples; I think I would feel out of place if I was not there as part of a couple. We also took advantage of the spa. The hydrotherapy option was... unusual? But the massage itself was relaxing. Overall, we really enjoyed how quiet and peaceful the resort was and will probably be back next year.Restaurants: - Spice (Asian) - So/so. To get the hibachi option, you had to book a reservation, which we did not do. The restaurant was hot, and with the hot food, I felt pretty uncomfortable while there. Sushi was not great, but I can be picky about sushi. - Chez Isabelle (French) - Definitely our favorite. Picture fancy French restaurant for no extra charge, romantic settings, and covered dishes. - Barcelona (Mediterranean) - Only stopped for a dish after trying to eat outside elsewhere but getting attacked by mosquitoes (despite the mosquito spray we put on that was available everywhere at the resort). Did not eat enough to really judge the food. - Toscana (Italian/Buffet) - We ate here for lunch only, which was a buffet (I think dinner was menu-only). The buffet was overwhelming with its options, but was still very good despite having so many options. - Flavor Market (Tapas) - Get the Iberian ham with a cheese plate and pan con tomate - feel like you are in Barcelona. - Basmati (Indian) - Never got to eat here, but smelled delicious when we walked by. - The Grill (Lunch) - The Grill was our favorite lunch spot, with a great view of the larger pool and the ocean. Portion sizes were smaller, which meant we could get an appetizer and entree and feel just right. - Lobster House (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) - We only ate here for breakfast and enjoyed it (though the view of the ocean certainly helped). In the same building as The Grill (took us awhile to figure that out). - Agave (Mexican) - We did not get to eat here, though I wish we had. We heard good things. - X Bar(?) (Pizza) - Grab a pizza and take it to the beach or pool for a nice snack. They say there is beachside dining services for snacks, but we were never offered any (honestly, we did not get great beachside service, but others around us did so maybe we just weren't loud enough). - Aroma (Coffee/Sweets) - On the third floor of the main building, there is a nice cafe with ice cream, paletas, coffees, etc. Very nice if you have a sweet tooth.Cons: Coffee was not good. Our concierge experience was not great, even though we were heavy tippers. Mosquitoes (but not the resort's fault, and they had bug spray available everywhere). Beds were a bit hard for my taste. In the morning, the door did not keep sound out very well. Our "beach view" room had only a sliver of an ocean view, as it was blocked by a gazebo. Sent to three different places by concierges and staff to break a large bill to use as tips. When I asked for one of the fun drinks inside the hull of a fruit, I was told they could not be brought to the beach -- and then watched that same employee bring one to someone else on the beach. Despite advertising to the contrary, we were never offered snacks on the beach. Beach/pool service closes too early. My t-shirt loving bf did not love the dress code at the restaurants.

Best Vacation EVER!

To put this review in perspective....This was our fifth trip to EPM, and our seventh with the Excellence group- once at Excellence Riviera Cancun, and once at Finest. We have probably stayed at 20 AI resorts, and this was our third trip to Mexico since Christmas. We have been ruined for any other resort, forever. We have always LOVED EPM, and go home and book for the following year, every time, though we decided we couldn't wait that long this time, and have booked in the summer too. This trip was the most amazing, just when we didn't think it could ever get better. The resort is beautiful, and the food is wonderful, but it really is the people that make it superior to any other resort I could ever compare EPM to. We had a minor glitch with our booking at the beginning of our trip, and the wonderful management went over and above any expectations to make it up to us. From Arlen to the Guest Services Manager Carolina, and Manager Nelson, we were not only well taken care of, but treated like celebrities. Grisela was amazing in so many ways, and could also be an actress the way she played along with a surprise dinner for me that she helped coordinate with my husband. We had the most romantic dinner on the deck of our suite that we have ever experienced. The details were incredible- from playing our song on the stereo, to bringing in the chef from our favourite restaurant- Chez Isabelle ( Thank you Franscesco- We will never forget that incredible Lotus Flower dessert.), to the beautiful decor, amazing service AND the jazz player. Just, WOW. We would like to thank concierges Christian and Pedro from buildings 1 and the the Imperial Suite building, and the special servers we had in the restaurants- Mario from the Beach Dinner, Russell at Basmati, Jonathon, and Gambliel, and of course, Cesar from the martini bar. We were fortunate enough to spend some time with Cesar as he made us his own martini and drink concoctions, and though I was barely able to make it to dinner that night- ha,ha!, it will always be a special memory. The drinks were amazing, and we had a lot of fun.As usual, our favourite restaurants are Chez Isabelle ( wonderful!), and Basmati ( I think we ate there three nights this time.), and our new favourite is the tuna pizza at the wood fired pizza oven- delicious! We stayed in our usual roof top terrace suite which we love, but also spent the last part of our trip in the Imperial Suite, which was beyond incredible in every way. That was our first experience staying in the Excellence Club, and we really loved it. The only drawback was we would often take turns bringing drinks back to the rooftop of the Imperial Suite from the Excellence Club bar, and one bartender told us we weren't allowed to bring back more than two. Odd, for sure. We hadn't been told that previously. If time allows, I would recommend taking the ferry to Isla Mujeres and renting a golf cart to drive around. It is a lot of fun, though it is difficult to leave EPM for the day.Few people run/walk outside of the EPM gates, but they should take advantage of the beautiful and safe paved trail which runs along the golf course. There is lots to see, with beautiful flowers lining the path, iguanas, and you may get a glimpse of the crocodile in the lake too. There is a fun bike group which goes along the path as well. Even the security staff are pleasant and helpful, and would offer us water when we returned from our morning runs. Much appreciated. We are so looking forward to our next trip to EPM. It is a slice of heaven, and knowing it is in good hands with Carolina and Nelson, I know it will be just as wonderful.
