Our Opinion

Located at the edge of the main strip, the Holiday Inn Cancun is an OK resort. This is definitely a better option for those looking for a short stay in Cancun. The majority of staff here are friendly and pleasant. This hotel has an all-inclusive option, and there are some do's and don'ts for certain guests, making it sometimes a bit of a hassle. The all-inclusive options when it comes to food is adeqaute. This resort is a great option for families or those looking for a quieter stay in Cancun. However, because of its location, its options, and price, there are a lot more suitable resorts to choose from that are of better value.

Mediterranean style property, stands out as one of the best values in the hotel zone, with a charming atmosphere and surrounded by tropical gardens.

Location: Beachfront, 20 minutes from the Cancun International Airport, just a few steps away from Cancun Hotel Zone.

Not bad, not great

The hotel is above average general Holiday Inn hotels but below average resorts in its class. The buffet is quite poor for an all inclusive in Mexico, but at the end could find decent choices to eat. I tried 2 of their a la carte restaurants and the food was quite good.The pool is small for the size of hotel. The beach is nice and for two days the ocean was like a large pool, completely flat with no waves. They have shows 2/week, and we caught one which was pretty good. Room was nice and clean, and the view to ocean, added a lot of value for me. Hotel is 5-10 min by car or by bus, from a shopping center / Wall Mart, in case you don't have all inclusive, or need to buy some things. Careful with the tours offered by the agents.I think they all offered the same, but I was cheated by Norma who has a booth on the beach. They have big pictures with MUSA (museum acvatic) and snorkeling with turtles at ihla muhers, they charge for it but in reality they deliver something completely different. After I paid for two snorkeling trip, one being at MUSA to see the statues, we were taken with a catamaran, to a place where other 5 large boats drop their tourists. In 35 minutes we were supposed to move slowly staying in each group, and wait for others to move. When I asked where is museum acvatic, the guide showed me a stick, and when finally I got there there were in the water 4 small statues (probably rejects) like palms, In one place I've seen a bank of fishes, but when to explore I was called back to stay with the group. From that moment where ever we moved I didn't see anything else in the water. We were taken at a restaurant on the island, and from there supposed to go on a shopping area on the island, but because weather changed bad, the last portion was cancelled and we returned. This is one big regret, I didn't achieve one vacation objective, and wasted money and time on that trip. So be aware of tours scams.Other than that, I think the hotel is a decent choice for the area.

Hoping for a European style resort? Go elsewhere

Decided to cash in some Holiday Inn reward points rather than the usual 2 weeks in the Caribbean. A very bad idea.The first room allocated to us might as well as been in the lobby. Not a hope of sleep after 17 hours travelling. A big thank you to the manager for moving us somewhere quieter.To start on a positive note the waiting staff, both bar and restaurant, were great. They generally appeared to want to serve and/or help. The problem with these staff is that generally they only spoke Spanish, which for an "International" Hotel Group seems a bit lacking.Any other staff that had any form of responsibility or management seemed to have no idea!! The IHG website used to offer a choice of 3 restaurants: 1 Grill, 1 Italian and 1 buffet. In the first week only the buffet was open - so not much of a choice. When asked about this the differing answers were: They are closed for refurbishment, they are open tomorrow (oh no they weren't). When we noticed on one night in the 2nd week that the Italian restaurant was open, we asked the following day and were told that we were wrong and it wasn't open. Silly us...Reception is equally as random and seem to not really care about anything customer facing.The land is described on the IHG website as set in exotic gardens and adjacent to white beaches. The actual gardens are a number of coconut palms and mostly set to lawn...hardly exotic. The white beach was at its narrowest about 8 feet wide. The sand was white but a lot of the time this was covered by an unhealthy amount of seaweed.I spent a couple of hours on the phone to IHG customer support trying to point out that this hotel is being mis-sold on their website as most of their claims are tenuous at best. IHG told me that the responsibility of the content is on the hotel, which is fair enough. However they would not own up to the fact that it is their website and therefore their responsibility to verify the claims. More startlingly was that the customer care stated that me booking rooms was also with the hotel. There is no where on the website that either says or reminds you that you are leaving the IHG site and that they are not responsible for anything on this site. Therefore they are culpable. Holiday is now over so there will be no resolution to this.In summary this hotel is very geared up for Spanish speaking clientele. Any other holiday maker who didn't speak Spanish seemed to have the same issue as us. There are plenty of hotels along the hotel zone and it may be worth looking at some others before making your choices

Great atmosphere!!!

Wonderful place to stay by beach. Staff and tourists very friendly. Activities every night like bingo.. movie night..etc. Breakfast was fantastic. What a spread!!! Must have omelets. Rooms are so spacious and room service was prompt. Next time in Cancun I'll stay again at the Holiday Inn Arenas on Kukulcan street.

Terrible hotel

Total waste of money, dont be fooled by false promises on their website. The following were only a portion of the problems we had. No towels in the room, after two calls to reception and 4 hrs later we had to get pool towels ourselves so we could take a shower. The advertised optional a la carte restaurants were not open except for 2 days nothing mentioned on their website so the only dining offered was the poor quality buffet. We watched a waiter froth up a glass of beer with a spoon because it was flat then serve it to us, The "crystal clear" waters and "white sandy beach" were more like "murky cloudy water" and "sea grass covered beach". The sheets on the bed were that old it was like sleeping on sandpaper and finally we woke one morning and were bitten that many times by what l can only assume were bed bugs. We met with one of their managers Jesus Salgado to discuss our issues and although he seemed genuine with our concerns at the time, his offer to us was to upgrade us to a suite and to refund our stay by way of points in the IHG rewards program. Of course as soon as we returned home no points were ever awarded by him and any attempts to contact him were ignored. Clearly it was a pacifying tactic. Even though this hotel falls under the IHG group banner, IHG customer service although apologetic weren't particularly interested however credited my rewards account with a token 20000 points which is around half the points required for a one night stay in a city hotel as they said they were unable to assist further as "the Holiday Inn Arenas is an independently owned and operated (franchised) hotel".If there are any other options in Cancun please consider them before you waste your money and vacation time on a terrible stay at this hotel.

Loved our Room

We loved the room we were given. We stayed 4 nights. It had a very nice view of the ocean from our balcony. We loved sitting outside on the balcony and overlooking the ocean. The food was ok. We ate a couple of nights at the hotel but most of the time we preferred to walk down the street to a small Mexican restaurant. The staff were very hospitable and helped us a lot. One thing we wish they had was a courtesy shuttle to and from the airport without having to pay for a taxi each time. The beach was small but it was also private which we did not mind. We liked having less people, it felt a little more secluded. Hotel was also farther away from the more Vegas type lifestyle which we were ok with. There were themed nights each night while we stayed there and it got a little loud at night but usually ended a little after 10 pm. It did not bother us. We would stay here again.
