Our Opinion

The Occidental Tucancun is a great budget-friendly option for those wanting to stay at the heart of the resort strip. The resort overall is good in quality. The rooms are cleaned and mini-bar stocked regularly. Resort grounds including the pool are well-maintained. The food options were OK. The choices were limited over time with the buffet restaurant. Make sure to check out the Mexican and seafood a la carte restaurants. The one thing that makes this resort stand out from others is their staff. The staff are undoubtedly what make this resort. They're incredibly attentive and ensure that you're getting the most out of your stay. The entertainment staff in particular are super fun and helpful, especially if you're looking to experience the nightlife around Cancun.

Enjoyed my trip

The view was beautiful, staff was great! Very nice resort, beautifully structured. Drinks weren't the best quality but they were good for the price! The rooms were damp - I know we went in June so maybe it was because of the weather. We did get one of the better rooms so I cant complain! The food was not good at all, but honestly it wasn't good anywhere besides downtown. The entertainment was cool. Everything closed early - more so for families.

Worth a stay

It’s worth a stay just watch out for those ants and don’t drink at the lobby bar. Nothing top shelf unless you become a premium member of the hotel. You wouldn’t know that if you were just visiting like myself. I’d come back though. I’d stay on a higher floor, only eat at Mexico Lindo and do more excursions.

Staff, staff and staff

Absolutely the best staff I've ever met! In this hotel it seems like every member of the staff takes customer service very seriously. Everybody treated me like a queen and were ready to do whatever it takes to make me happy. Super polite, always smiling and working sooooo hard. My respect goes all these people!Hotel itself has gone through renovation and has now really nice bar in the lobby (and once again, super good staff and great drinks). Pool area is awesome and has loungers more than enough. Rooms are bit worn down, but really comfy with all the amenities you can ask for. Food is good and there is plenty to choose from. I didn't try a la carte, because I truly liked buffet. I tried Italian buffet, but I felt that good in Mirador was way better. The beach in front of this hotel is one of the most beautiful ever. No wonder rainbow ends here :)

Enjoyable stay at Tucancun

We wanted to change things up a little from our normal Cozumel / Playa del Carmen vacation so we stayed at the Tucancun for 6 days prior to heading to Playa for days. Very nice facility with friendly people working there. We had an ocean view room with a nice balcony. The view was spectacular. Buffet food was fine but we ended up eating at the Italian restaurant most nights as we liked it best. The pools were nice and the beach was great. Lobby bar was a fun place to have a drink at night. A strong surf and the wind is pretty stout most of the time. Did a day trip to Isla. Take the yellow boat over. Took the public bus ($1) downtown to the shops. Didn't really care for this as the shop employees pester you constantly. Great stay at Tucancun but no comparison to the Royal Hideaway in Playa where we finished up our trip. It was spectacular.

Excellent beach, friendly staff, disappointing food and dated rooms

We had a great week at Occidental. As other reviewers have mentioned, the food isn't the best. Who would guess that a resort in Cancun wouldn't have Pico de Gallo? We had to ask for it to be made. Also, they don't serve food at the pool, which was a major bummer. The rooms are dated with paper thin walls. We could hear everything going on at the Lobby Bar or the pool in our room. Thankful the noise quieted down by 10:00 PM -- but daytime naps were out of the question. The highlight of our service was Alberto -- funny, quick to serve the best drinks, and very helpful.
