Barely a 4 Star - But New & Clean

Just visited this resort last week. We've been to Mexico many times, in various star levels over the years. We prefer 5 star now almost exclusively. It is not a 5 star in our opinion. Maybe a 4, just barely. No top shelf in the rooms and only some in the bars - which was ok for us, but I know of people that would be pissed at not having grey goose etc, especially if it is sold as having it. No coffee maker in our room. No bathtub, no Jacuzzi on the grounds, other than in the spa (have to book ahead) It was booked solid - so no hot tubbing for us. We are fairly spontaneous, so this was annoying as it was booked solid by day 2 into our vacay. No adult only areas - most 5 stars don't allow children in the swim up bar pools (that we have experienced at least), and it would have been really nice to have one area where there weren't kids allowed. And I know this is a family resort, it just would be good to have one adult area in the resort, at the very least 1 swim up bar pool. The rooms are very clean - as they should be when brand new. The grounds are beautiful, pools are nice. Water activities are ok, to below average.Evening entertainment was barely ok. Wine was terrible.Almost all restaurants are buffet style, even the ones where you have a reservation for. The lobby bar is good. The staff are very helpful and very attentive. We liked the beach. It was very clean and they served us without pause anytime we were down there. There is a small bar/restaurant up the beach that looked neat - all locals. We should have experienced it, but my the time we found it, it was close to the end of our trip and we had booked an excursion so didn't have time.It is about a 25-30 USD cab ride to town, and we needed to visit town to get a change of scenery, but felt we had to go do something different. We enjoyed our stay, but will not return to this resort, and will give honest advise about it if asked from friends etc.I would also recommend asking for a room in the area of the hotel closest to the ocean. We were on the second floor, it was quiet enough most of the time. However, when the club is on - its on! Everytime the doors opened up, you could clearly hear the music and loud talking - it should have been in a different area for sure. And the staff didn't bother telling the drunk people coming out at closing, to vacate the courtyard -so it would get very loud late in the night/early morning. And we are not against the partying, just the dumb location of the party. We went the club too. The ocean view we had was at the furthest point from the ocean (facing it). It was an ok view, but more of a garden view sold as an ocean view. Also, we didn't find anywhere to snorkel (that doesn't mean there wasn't one somewhere - we just couldn't find it) and the ocean is quite rough mostly. Not the resorts fault at all, just a heads up.My mascara (2 non waterproof ones) were stolen out of our room by housekeeping - weird and gross, but it happened, so I had to wear only water proof the whole time - which isn't fun if your a woman...Seems petty I know, but I was pretty annoyed at the nerve and filed a report as it is not ok on any level for anything to go missing out of our room. All other valuables stayed in the safe. It was by all means NOT an amazing trip, but an ok one. It has some things that need attention/adjustment, and if you are firm 5 star vacationer, this is not a 5 star at all. Just our 2 cents :)

Brand New but expected more

This was our first stay at a Riu resort. We are yearly travellers and usually are pretty good with picking resorts that we normally have a great time at. This resort fell short for us and only earned itself s 3 star in our books. If you have kids. Than you definitely should come to this resort!!! Check in and out were great and front desk staff were super friendly. Rooms were clean and still smelled of fresh paint. Everything worked and we had no issues. The air conditioner as mentioned in other travellers reviews is correct. It noisy when it cuts out. We had an oceanview room in the middle just above the entertainment area. At night it was loud and you could hear everything. Spa was great we had a few services and was happy with the services we paid for. Food is nothing special. No theme nights really rhat would could see. The food was the same day after day. Lacked a bit of flavor but we ate and managed yo get through the week. Sports bar is 24 hours. But all you can eat there is cold sandwiches cold hamburgers fruit and salads hot dogs and "nachos". Beach is fantastic. They work so hard keeping it clean and pristine. And its nice and quiet for yhe most part. Not lots of traffic going through as this resort is secluded. But that will change soom with the palace beinh built next door and the grand palladium further south. Entertainment was a snooze fest for us. The live bands were the best. But the entertainement we found to be boring and never could stay and finish the show. We didnt dine at any ala cartes because we heard the food was from the buffet.. so we just ate at the buffets. Pools are busy and smaller and we noticed they were fairly busy. We go to warmer destinations for the beach and are usually not bothered by the pools unless the beach is rocky or not very nice. Drinks were good and workers do the best they can with trying to serve everyone. And same with at the restaurants. It seemed like the resort is a bit understaffed maybe but your on vacation whats the rush. In summary, as i stated if you have kids then go! This is definitely not a couples resort by any means. We like trying different hotel brands and riu is not one we would return to. But would consider to try palaces one day just to compare.

Not worth it! Even though we got a good deal!

We are a Family of 4 who have been to Mexico 5 times and travelled to other Islands like St. Lucia, Jamaica , Dominican republic and we decided to try the Riu Dunamar from Dec 23rd to Dec 30th! Trying something new for Xmas! Every day there was an issue.. When we arrived at 2am our room wasn't ready and we had reserved 2 rooms but only has us down for 1... We waited 2 hours for them to get us a room. So it was 4am by the time we got a place to sleep. The next day at 830am we get a call (3.5 hours rest) and we were asked to pack up our stuff because they needed the bed / room we had been given.. I had paid for an upgrade so I wanted to make sure they were moving me to the right room, also that we paid for 2 rooms so wanted 2 rooms.. So after packing up we were told we would have our new rooms at 12 noon and to come back to the front desk at that time... we waited till around until 330 pm until the new rooms were ready.. which is a big inconvenience to have to keep coming back to the front desk , standing in line as many people were complaining and ask " is the room ready" and them promising 10 more minutes etc... ? Pretty much wasted that whole day with packing and unpacking , waiting etc... Finally got our room and I must say the rooms are very clean ( it is a new resort) .. Oh but no coffee maker in the room, so if you want a coffee in the am on the balcony you will have to go down and get one .. If your on the top 2 floors it will be a lot of walking . They do have an elevator however it doesn't work very well.. In fact the following day we got stuck in one ! They had to send a guy to get us out! Then our room keys didn't work for both rooms on the 3rd day and we had to keep going back to the front desk to get new ones. As for the food , well lets just say everything is a buffet! although there are 5 restaurants and they say a few are a la carte they all have a buffet . If you don't go to dinner by 6pm you will have to wait and sometimes will not get in at all . They have a few beepers that they give you if your lucky so while you wait for 1.5/2 hours to eat they can let you know when your table is ready, but they don't have enough so most people keep having to walk back to see if your table is ready .. Not organized at all! They don't have enough staff to keep up .. You would see tables available but no staff to clean them off and sit the people waiting. the food is average.. The beach is very nice but not calm at all. Always yellow flag.. Drinks are terrible! if fact we typically enjoy swim up bars and having drinks during the day but they just weren't all that great ! The front desk is not organized and not knowledgeable on how to run a hotel/ resort.. We got a call on the 4th day to come and pay our outstanding bill! Which again we had to solve that issue as we had booked an all inclusive and they had us down for paying nightly.. Ugg Oh and they have no room service!!!! so if you feel like having a snack in your room or anything its not happening All in All I would not suggest this resort other than it is clean and for Mexico it has a decent beach.

Nothing equals a five star.

We tried this resort as it was new and so we expected it to clean and fresh - which it was. The rooms were immaculate and clean - because they were new. We paid way too much for this experience. The drinks were great around the pool. The expresso was pretty good at the sports bar and the Mezcal bar by the pool. The beach was clean and lovely despite the windy days. However, overall our experience was poor. Food: Terrible. The Asian restaurant is 100% buffet and no one knows how to make any Asian food, including curries (which are Indian, but Riu doesn't seem to realize that). Why anyone would serve soggy tempura is beyond me. A disaster and a huge disappointment. Yes, we read that foodies would be disappointed, but my children with no determinable taste buds would have thought this disappointing. Service in any of the restaurants is not consistent and nor is the food. I got food poisoning on day four's breakfast - which is amazing because I never get food poisoning. Wine is terrible cheap Chilean table wine which is fine, but a self-proclaimed (and proclaimed by Sunwing - shame on you!) five star resort should have a bottle list so we can at least upgrade to a sub-par wine instead. Rooms - I don't know what they launder their sheets with but every morning I was covered in hives so I was forced to buy calamine lotion and claritin meds in the resort shop at $20 USD a pop. Nothing worse than being tired and looking forward to bed and yet terrified of your bed. We were a pair of friends so we asked for two Queen beds - to our surprise these Queen beds were side-by-side as there was no space in the room for the beds to be separated, so at 40-something it was like having a sleep-over with your "bestest friend forever!" (Please note my sarcasm). The hotel claims they can separate the beds - but a five inch space between beds does not make a difference. Apparently all rooms were designed and set up for a King bed. Or at least ours was. We were never moved to a more appropriate room though promised. We were on the top (4th) floor of the hotel with an Ocean view. It was ok, but you could not enjoy the sounds of the ocean (apparently we were in a cheaper Ocean view room and thus way at the back of the resort) because of the giant air conditioners on the roof. We asked to change rooms and promised a new room the next day. They told us the next day that our request was not recorded so we were to come back another day. We gave up. Check your mini-bars in your rooms. We knew our room had been used before - or the maids got thirsty - as some of the water and pop bottles were opened and partly drunk (not by us). If you have an Ocean view you can not escape the evening show because you will hear it in your room even with the door closed. The air conditioners can not even cancel out the music.
