Our Opinion

Top of the line, beautiful hotel! The Riu Palace Las Americas is near the top of the list for 5 star resorts in Cancun. Great food, service and entertainment. Champagne for breakfast! Rooms are all junior suites and are very nicely finished. The beach area is a bit small, but they make up for it with two great infinity pools. Now an adults-only resort, this is a definite recommend for couples.

tripadvisor Traveler Reviews

Expected better from a 5* property

Positives: As stated in many other reviews, this hotel and it's grounds are beautifully maintained both inside and out. We found all staff extremely polite and helpful. Beach kept in pristine condition. Plenty of beach chairs available and more supplied immediately if the beach became busy. Waiter service available on the beach. Beach toilets kept very clean and hand sanitizer provided by the door. Four optics are provided in the room along with a fridge containing soft drinks and beer. Plenty of taxis available outside the hotel reception area. Several restaurants available for dining. We always felt very safe in the complex. There is a great opportunity to snorkel amongst the tropical fish below the board walks.Negatives: Noise. My partner has been to this hotel many times in the past and was very surprised at the noise levels at the hotel this year. The room doors do not have a soft close mechanism so slam shut if you don't keep hold of the handle. Due to the floors being tiled, we constantly heard the occupants above us walking about or dropping things on the floor. The floors are left very slippy by whatever products the cleaners are using. Noise seems to echo in the hotel rooms. My partner had to ring reception around 1am one morning to ask them to deal with the occupants above our room shouting and laughing. Prior to this there was a party of occupants who spilled out of the late bar at 11am and continued to party outside around the pool below us until almost 1am. We also encountered the noise of the occupant in the room next being violently sick in the early hours of New Years day which went on until around 3am with the gentleman going in and out of the patio doors and onto the balcony. Another couple on the same floor decided to get intimate at high volume inside and outside of their room in the early hours of the same morning. Every day the cleaners could be heard with their squeaky trolleys walking down the corridors early each morning speaking to each other loudly. We avoided to pool area where entertainment was provided but found we still had to suffer the noise on the beach. People on the beach were also allowed to bring their own music systems and pollute other people's space with their noise. Touts were constantly walking by either shouting or asking you if you wanted to buy something. On the plus side they did soon move on if you said you didn't want anything. I preferred the quieter beaches and atmosphere on the Isla Mujeres.Entertainment: The entertainment provided here was something I'd have expected to be subjected to at a 2 or 3* holiday camp in the UK. Quite poor for a 5 star hotel so we avoided this area. I'm sure the staff who provide the entertainment work very hard. On New Years Eve we expected something spectacular. Instead the hotel provided a disco and a Burlesque show!! Really...!! Very disappointed. Although the shows did stop at 11am, the people leaving the venue didn't disperse for at least an hour or so afterwards, and continued to sing and shout around the pool. My partner also found it very disturbing to find a female cleaner in the male toilets by the beach. She cleaned in the toilets whilst men were using the facilities. My partner had to ask twice for only sugar free soft drinks to be provided in the fridge in the room. We had to move twice on the beach due to other people smoking near by. There are also signs around the beach and hotel pools warning people not to feed the creatures... i.e. birds. The gulls will steal your food if they can get close enough. On two occasions we had people feeding the gulls and taking photos of them whilst stood next to us. Given that BBQ's are provided outside on occasion by the pool at lunch time, this issue should be better addressed by staff. On one occasion we walked out of the hotel and as we walked along the pavement leading from reception, a palm branch came down in front of us. Luckily, my partner had spotted the men cutting back the palms and had diverted me across the road out of the way. There was no warning signs below to make people aware of falling branches. I'm not sure what the Health and Safety procedures are in Mexico but one day we had a gentleman painting on the outside of the balconies on the floor above reception. The only PPE I saw him wearing was a pair of overalls. No safety helmet, no harness, mask or gloves. I personally would have preferred more alternative entertainment to be provided by the hotel for the evening as not everybody wants to drink or sit in and watch whatever was provided on stage. Even though this is an adult only hotel, I'd have appreciated a games room, crazy golf, pool, snooker, basket ball hoop, or something that would maybe allow people to interact more in the evening. On the whole, my first experience here was what I would have expected to find in a 2 or 3 * resort in Benidorm or Malaga.Speaking to fellow holiday makers of various ages on the coach to the airport and also back at the hotel in the UK, we learnt that several people also shared our opinions regarding the hotel and the area outside, which is such a pity as this is a beautiful hotel with a fantastic beach.

BEAUTIFUL RESORT, but...

PROS: Beautiful Resort property! The lobby is absolutely gorgeous with breathtaking ocean, pool views. The Resort Staff were exceptional-very attentive, accommodating. Extremely clean property, grounds. Staff constantly cleaning, painting, planting etc...no trash lying around. Beach is absolutely amazing. Location is perfect- calm waves (except when it’s really windy). Pools, bar areas nicely kept. Beautiful ocean views. Beach activities, parasailing ($60)conveniently located right on property. All restaurants on site are updated with modern furnishings, freshly painted and beautiful art work. Rooms are a decent size, with step down living area(at least on the 7th floor)shower had great pressure and blow dryer was a 1600, powerful for a small wall attached brand. Refrigerator stocked with water, Pepsi products. Plenty of bottled water/food in various locations throughout. Alcohol selection limited. Absolute Vodka was their premium brand, or Smirnoff was the regular selection. Jacuzzi in the Spa was a nice size, easily accessible. Not a far drive from the airport-15 to 20 mins depending on traffic. Shops, Pharmacy and restaurants directly across the street. CONS: Musty wood smells in lobby & rooms. It is due to the extravagant wood paneling, detailing and dampness from the climate. You will get used to it, but the odor will follow you home in your clothes. The air-conditioning is weak. Hard to get it to work properly. The sheets are more on the worn side. They stay dampish due to the humidity. Took awhile to get used to. Food quality mediocre at best and 8 out of 10 times not served at proper temperature. Hot foods were room temp and cold food slightly chilled. Even served food at restaurants NOT served hot. Most disappointing part of the entire vacation! There was 7 of us comparing dining experiences sadly all coming to the same conclusions. Will not be back to this resort based on food quality. 4 out of our 7, got a 24hr stomach bug :(SERVICE was excellent throughout-zero complaints by any of us. It’s a shame because the Resort is beautiful!

bad experience with riu

we missed our first nigh due to a plane failure. 24 hours later we arrived at the hotel and was told that our room could not be guaranteed. after fighting with desk staff, we were given our room (which was already paid for and not used the night before). the first room (#825) was right besides the service elevator which made noises all night long and made for uncomfortable sleep. we were moved to another room and immediately had internet problems and the cable was out on the TV for a short while. floors in all the rooms are slick with cleaning products as they are not diluted. after 4 nights we decided to give up our last remaining 2 nights and move to another hotel. we were hassled when we came back to get our luggage because we cut our wristband off. all in all this was not a good experience. we tried working with expedia to no avail. after this experience, we will reconsider our relationship with expedia as well. buyer beware if you are used to solid 4/5 star hotel experiences.

Save your money. Don’t stay here

Save your money and go somewhere else. Not worth it. Problems from the minute we walked in. Gave us a room over looking the roads, even though we paid for ocean view. Showed them the papers of what we paid for and said we will upgrade you to the ocean view... UPGRADE?? Really we paid for that. It’s not an upgrade. Rooms are average. I would stay next door or somewhere else next time. Don’t stay here. Staff is rude and not helpful.

Christmas vacation

Another awesome vacation, this hotel just gets better and better. As returning guests, it's so nice to be recognised by the staff, it makes our holiday experience more personal. From the moment you arrive, you are made to feel so welcome, check in is seamless and reception staff are fantastic the room was a stunning corner room with panoramic ocean views up and down the beach, thank you Danilu, you did us proud. The animation team are amazing, Juan does a great job looking after his team, they work so hard and do a fantastic job and always have time for a chat, particularly enjoyed the pool party this trip. Waiter service to your sun bed, Wilbert was our waiter, absolute gent and did an amazing job throughout the day so you don't even have to move to the bar if you don't feel like it. There are ample sun beds compared to volume of guests and plenty of room, you're not cramped or really close to others. Food excellent as always, one our favourites is the Black & White, great steaks and again Rigo and his team are fantastic. Always a good choice in the buffet too if you don't fancy any of the speciality restaurants.Lobby bar is a personal favourite, we've met some great friends in this bar over the years and Abu is something else, what an amazing guy and awesome at his job, drinks will be waiting by the time you get to the bar. This hotel and its staff are very addictive, once you've been, you'll definitely be back, can't wait to go back later this year. We have been to other hotels in Cancun but this is by far our favourite.
