Our Opinion

An outstanding hotel to visit when you're in Cancun. Compared to the other resorts, the Riu Palace Peninsula is a bit larger than other resorts that you would find along the hotel zone. Great a la carte and buffet items to choose from here. The variety of food here is incredible. It can be guaranteed that you'll never experience the same thing twice when dining in a restaurant. Compared to most other all-inclusive resorts, the quality of food here is good. The resort grounds are always clean and well-maintained. While the majority of the rooms are pretty good, the special suites have a tendency to be cramped. They may offer extra perks such as an in-suite jacuzzi. The pools are what this resort is notable for. Regardless of your age, there is a pool atmosphere here that is appropriate for you. While the staff remain attentive and try their best to accomodate to your needs, be advised that the check-in process can be relatively lengthy.

Overview
Riu Palace Peninsula is located next to the Riu Caribe on a dazzling stretch of white sand beach, framed by tropical vegetation and crystal clear turquoise water. This Riu Palace luxury resort features seven specialty restaurants with wonderful cuisine ranging from Japanese to Italian to Mexican, six bars, water sports, two freshwater pools (one heated in the winter and the second with a Jacuzzi and swim-up bar) daily entertainment and an on-site Mayan ruin discovered during the hotel construction.

The spacious and luxurious guestrooms include predominantly white decor with vibrant accents as well as signature RIU amenities, including the famous Riu liquor dispenser. Soak in hydro massage tubs large enough for two and admire the spectacular views from your private balcony. Revel in a variety of land and water sports as well as fun activities. The RiuLand Kids Club will keep children entertained with supervised games, while the new RiuArt program will help you discover your inner artist. For an extra treat, indulge in pampering treatments at the Renova Spa.

Location: Beachfront in Cancun's hotel zone, 10 min to downtown, 45 min from the airport.

FABULOUS

My husband and I had never stayed at a palace before. Well,,,, definitely worth it. The food was amazing. The staff was fantastic. We stayed in the adult villa. We felt like royalty. Can't say enough about the resort,,,truly worth it if you want excellent food and premium alcohol. The entertainment staff (so much fun) sells tickets to help the less fortunate in Cancun and my husband and I were lucky enough to win a catamaran cruise. Thanks Linda ❤️. The day was so much fun. We will definitely stay at this resort the next time we return to Cancun.

Excellent Choice

They offered free room upgrade upon arrival. Staff in all areas of the resort were very friendly and worked very hard. Property was very clean and safe. Food was excellent at all the restaurants with excellent variety at the buffet.

Cancun is dull but this hotel is one of the best

Staff: Fantastic - all staff were brilliant without expecting tips but accepted final tips graciously. Felt well cared for on the two days that I was very ill and all staff (including first aiders, room service and reception) were prepared to fulfil any requirements to aid my recovery. Special mention to Mario, Arnando, Norberto, Saline (breakfast/lunch Las Olas) Dennis and Max (dinner Las Olas) who all performed outstandingly throughout our stay. Food: Disappointing - a tendency to lack flavour and to be either too fried, too salty or both. Somewhat unhygienic conditions - warm humid air from outside causing buffet food to sweat when left out for long periods and other guests leaving the spoons in the food rather than resting them back on the trays provided.Japanese restaurant - sushi starter about as good as M&S (if a little warm!) mahi mahi excellent and chicken satay dish quite good. The best place to eat dinner in the hotel.Steakhouse - OK. Salmon huge but overcooked edges and undercooked inside due to chargrilling method (?), nice wedges and dips, lobster available every night. Although the steak there is NY certified I found mine to be a rather poor cut with lots of fat :(Italian - Nice mozzarella and tomato salad and seafood pasta as part of the buffet starters. A la carte mains poor - although a lot of effort has clearly gone in there is very little flavour, just salt. A real shame as the staff working here were particularly lovely. Las Olas breakfast - Sausage and hash browns good with Heinz ketchup and mustard available, tasty with fried or fresh onions. Lots of vegetarian (especially egg based items waffles, pancakes etc) and vegan (beans, breads, fruit) options. Porridge ruined by mandatory addition of cinnamon rather than add to taste. Pancakes are flour heavy and not like crepes - a bit of a shame as they were too heavy for more than one. Lots of lovely fresh juices (except orange juice! Only orange juice from concentrate), milkshakes and yoghurts. Las Olas (and adjoining terrace area) lunch - Best meal available in the hotel. Lots of fish options - tilapia, grouper, red snapper, tuna, salmon. Sweet and sour chicken, vegetarian rice and stir fry. Do not miss out by eating rubbish at the pool BBQ! These options were not served for dinner and people who didn't wish to dry off or were out all day were really missing out here. Also there was ice cream and a good selection of puds. Las Olas buffet - poor and mostly a rehash of the food served in the a la carte restaurants. Good selection of hot and cold seafood but conditions a bit unhygienic (warm, lots of people placing spoons back in dishes etc). Cappuccino bar – very good, lots of hot/iced coffee options and decent cakes/cookies.Drinks: Amazing – brand name spirits and mixers. Mojito, blue lagoon and pina colada were about the best cocktails for those not possessing a sweet tooth. White wine and pink champagne both good. Activities: Kayaks located at the end of Riu beach next door. One free hour per person per holiday – this sucks but (!) that is not the hotel’s fault, it is Thomson’s for not making this clear on their website. Then again, a lot of people aren’t interested in kayaking on holiday so maybe the hotel could make it at least a free hour per day.Snorkelling (done with own equipment or limited rental from hotel) very poor here – and the swimming area is severely restricted due to all the motorised watersports taking place barely offshore. One small area close the rocky outcrop had lots of small fish, several barracuda and after an hour of keeping quite still I was lucky enough to spot a ray. Fish are usually terrified by the pelicans sat on the pier and by the crowd of people that tend to stand around looking for fish but can’t keep still – so not much to see. All in all pretty dull. But I couldn’t fault the hotel and if you love eating lots of meat/fish, drinking cocktails/coffee and swimming in crystal clear (albeit a bit petrol-y) warm water you won’t be disappointed. Its just… 7 days of this? And beware, Thomson are of course very clever… cheapest excursion £75 each!So it was walking and buses to more of the same in Cancun to keep us occupied – be prepared for this if you’re an active person who is used to haggling for a good deal to see something different (as may be done in Europe/Middle East). On our adventures in Cancun we stopped off in several other hotels (InterContinental, Sunset Marina, ClubMed, all Rius) for a look around - on that basis I would say this hotel is one of the best. Riu Las Americas was undergoing refurb but would be equally good if you enjoy clubbing. Riu Cancun was impressive given the lower room rate and a beach signficantly larger, albeit featureless, compared to Riu PP. Riu Caribe was diabolical - to the extent they have to constantly remind their guests not to go in the pool if they've been sick lately (ew). However much money you wish to save, Riu Caribe would not be worth it!

1st visit amazing - our return not so much

We first visited this hotel in September 2014 ... we had no faults with the hotel and loved every aspect ... which is why we rebooked for October 2016 ... and this time we weren't impressed !!A few things weren't on point as they were the last time Trainers , phone , and straighteners went missing from our room ... I complained to reception staff and reported the incident .... it was frustrating as I kept being told to come back in 30 minutes about 3 times as the person I had to speak to wasn't there ....however once the complaint was logged I was basically told not to expect much and my stuff was gone which TBH I find disgusting that they don't employ trustworthy staff in the first place ... and basically made out it happens a lot ! The next day my straighteners were the only item returned ... and the maid was sacked - the manager sincerely apologized and offered us an apology of a couples massage , romantic dinner on the beach and for the photographer to take our pictures ... amazing customer service however shouldn't have happened in the first place Romantic dinner was amazing ... although the photographer was very disinterested and TBH his techniques were very old fashioned - kept telling me to "hand on hip" poses which to me seemed very un natural , plus the fact he came when our main meal arrived , which was cold by the time he finished ... our waiter however was amazing and I am so sorry I can't remember his name .The next day I went to see the photos ... we were told they couldn't find them "come back in 30" which seems to be a famous quote in the hotel ... came back and was told again couldn't find them ... come back in 2days when the photographer is back from days off ... came back ... photos lost !!! Which was a disappointment !! Hotel are supposed to be apologizing for stolen goods but it was completely spoiled ! Staff turning up to hotel room also at late hours to give us towels which I thought was strange , was annoying also as after xplor park we wanted an early night and we were woken up by maids at 9pm ???Pool entertainment needs updating as it's the exact same thing every day and gets very boring .... felt like I was saying de Ja vu constantly Pool bar staff - with the exception of Jorge- were very rude at times ... again not as good as previous years Overall just quite disappointed as we loved it the first time but just wasn't up to par this year which is a shame

Great hotel

Prior to my holidays I asked for a room with kingsize bed as it was our honeymoon vacations. After our arrive we were informed that such rooms are not available anymore however the hotel has upgraded our room to "Adults only" zone for free - this was great surprise for us. Be careful with food as this is just excellent (I gained 2 kgs after 1 week). The staff is very friendly and helpful. There is 15 min travel to shopping malls by local buses (travels every 5 min.). In Nov the hotel not fully booked and there was no issues with sunbeds at the pool or the beach. I would definitely return to this hotel.
