Our Opinion

An outstanding hotel to visit when you're in Cancun. Compared to the other resorts, the Riu Palace Peninsula is a bit larger than other resorts that you would find along the hotel zone. Great a la carte and buffet items to choose from here. The variety of food here is incredible. It can be guaranteed that you'll never experience the same thing twice when dining in a restaurant. Compared to most other all-inclusive resorts, the quality of food here is good. The resort grounds are always clean and well-maintained. While the majority of the rooms are pretty good, the special suites have a tendency to be cramped. They may offer extra perks such as an in-suite jacuzzi. The pools are what this resort is notable for. Regardless of your age, there is a pool atmosphere here that is appropriate for you. While the staff remain attentive and try their best to accomodate to your needs, be advised that the check-in process can be relatively lengthy.

Overview

Riu Palace Peninsula is located next to the Riu Caribe on a dazzling stretch of white sand beach, framed by tropical vegetation and crystal clear turquoise water. This Riu Palace luxury resort features seven specialty restaurants with wonderful cuisine ranging from Japanese to Italian to Mexican, six bars, water sports, two freshwater pools (one heated in the winter and the second with a Jacuzzi and swim-up bar) daily entertainment and an on-site Mayan ruin discovered during the hotel construction.

The spacious and luxurious guestrooms include predominantly white decor with vibrant accents as well as signature RIU amenities, including the famous Riu liquor dispenser. Soak in hydro massage tubs large enough for two and admire the spectacular views from your private balcony. Revel in a variety of land and water sports as well as fun activities. The RiuLand Kids Club will keep children entertained with supervised games, while the new RiuArt program will help you discover your inner artist. For an extra treat, indulge in pampering treatments at the Renova Spa.

Location: Beachfront in Cancun's hotel zone, 10 min to downtown, 45 min from the airport.

Minor hiccups, overall great vacation, some tips

First some tips, to keep the lights on in the room, you must put the key card in the holder that is on the wall just inside the door. Next, bring lots of singles to tip the bartenders, service people, bellboys, etc. I ran out of singles and only had 20's left so here's how you get more. Since they won't make change at reception, order a drink at a bar and ask the server to bring you back $18 in singles. Problem solved. Now the vacation,My husband and I along with some of his coworkers stayed at the resort just after the new year. It was a part work trip for him since he had some meetings to attend. His boss asked about the meeting room they were to have but no one at reception or the manager knew anything about it. This caused frustration and they never did remedy the problem even though the boss showed an email from the resort confirming the meeting area. My husband's work ended up holding the meeting by sitting in the area where they have the shows at night since during the day the place is unoccupied. We requested a room change which they supplied on our 2nd night because our original room had two full beds and I did NOT go on vacation to not sleep in the same bed as my husband! And the view in room 101 was quite frankly awful. Our next room was so much better with the king bed and double balcony. I enjoyed doing the yoga, cardio class and aerobics with Daniel, and the rest of the RIU Fit staff. They are great and very upbeat. The buffet is large and pretty good. It's hard to make perfect food for the volume of guests but I never went hungry. The specialty restaurants were alright. If I go back, I think I would just stick to the buffets, except the chocolate pyramid at the Mexican restaurant was the beat dessert there. There was so much to do, time to relax, and the MISTER show on Thursday night was great(My husband won). You will enjoy yourself if you choose the RIU Palace Peninsula.

De Luxe New year....

We went to the Peninsula for New Year's. The hotel was crowded, mainly with east europeans. We had an issue with our room, and had to talk to the manager to get what we had prepaid in advance. We were though located in the third floor, above the discoteque. Fortunately, it ended at 11pm (New Year at 2 AM) but tended to be noisy. The breakfast was overwemling and you would have anything you wanted in the buffet, as well as for lunch. Food was of good qualitly. As for dinner, they tend to confuse you: they said there are no reservations for the restaurants, however when you show up, there will be a waiting list, some times two hours waiting. Despite it was prepaid, we went out instead.New Years dinner was really spectacular: you will have all the cold dishes (Stone crabs, alaskan crab legs, caviar, etc), plus the classics hot meats (turkey, meat pork) and all the mexican specialties PLUS an outstanding dessert menu. Very good wines and champagne (free of course), all night long. Then moved to the party area, and there you have all the beverages, and they gave us free, all the trinkets to celebrate New Year. One piece of advise: do not buy at the gift shop. It is ridicusly expensive. Go outside, walking distance you will find stores that sell the same for half of what you are paying.Another suggestion: If you want to go shopping or eating out, if you go to La Isla consider that on your way back you have to pass through the bars and discoteque area , Plaza Caracol, and that could take some 20 minutes. We went to visit the new mall called Puerto Cancun, that is in downtown direction, and was surpirsed of the high quality of stores and restaurants it have. It is some 5-10 minutes taxi ride.

Excellent stay at Riu Palace Peninsula

We are just finishing our one week stay here - first time at this hotel and Mexico. Can’t praise staff at the Riu enough- these are some of the hardest working staff we’ve ever seen. Nothing is too much trouble and effort. Special praise for the dining staff who could not be more accommodating. We bought a couple of hundred $ worth of pesos for tipping and we were so glad we had as it’s visible that thins is appreciated and goes a long way with the staff here. We found the food to be great and all-inclusive fantastic. We though the entertainment staff were also superb, funny, entertaining and had us laughing throughout- but also respectful to those who didn’t want to participate in activities. A great week all round and we hope to come back again.

Nice resort, good food, but rooms need some TLC

Rooms: We showed up on New Years Eve and were given rooms 105 and 106. We had asked or adjoining rooms as we were traveling with kids, but they were not adjoining (understood it was not guaranteed)...but next to each other which was fine. We also had asked for one king and one double. Problem #1 - Both rooms were doubles; Problem #2 -both rooms were handicap accessible rooms and were not maintained well and the bathrooms were horrific with a shower that leaked all over the place because it was just a flimsy shower curtain and the toilet was in the same room as the shower. The resort was booked for the night so we endured the night and had the flood from the shower fixed for the time being. After the first night, the staff moved our room across the hall to 111. Once we were in that room, we truly realized how horrible the other rooms were...super glad they accommodated us and moved us. The kids stayed in our old room because they really don't care. Room 111 was nice, but I wouldn't say it was luxurious. We have been on many vacations and I would rate it as good, but not a luxury room. Honestly...we didn't hang out in room much. The Property:The grounds and property are great. Super clean - always somebody cleaning. We found the entry area along with the lounges for getting drinks and coffee very nice. The Pool:The pool crew are great. They put together fun activities if you enjoy that. The infinity pool was really cold, which would be great when it is super hot out, but it was cooler on our trip so it wasn't used by many. The Entertainment:The entertainment staff are awesome. I know some people said the shows are a joke, but it is Mexico. I wasn't expecting Cirque and I went to every show and enjoyed each one in its own way.The Food:The buffet is awesome - breakfast, lunch and dinner were all great. The specialty restaurants are OK. Italian is not good, Japanese is not good, Krystal is a bit better and Steakhouse was good. We did not do the Mexican restaurant because we heard it wasn't good and didn't want to waste a meal. The Staff: All amazing. Best service and kindest most accommodating staff I've ever had at a resort. From front desk, bellmen, entertainment staff, wait staff, etc...All suburb.Cons: Would be nice if they had a teen club. My daughter really wanted to meet other teens and it was not easy to do without a club. They did offer nightly trips to the clubs if you are 18 and older which was nice.
