Our Opinion

An amazing hotel for those looking for a romantic getaway in Cancun. The Sun Palace is known for its romantic ambiance. While the rooms are a bit dated in decor, it is still well maintained and always cleaned. The views from the rooms are incredible. You're always guaranteed to have an ocean view room when you book at this resort. The staff here are amazing in ensuring that you are served in a prompt manner. For those who are looking for a more intimate experience, the Sun Palace offers barely more than 200 suites. It can be ensured that your stay will be a quiet one. Good food options when it comes to the buffet. Better options though lie with the a la cartes. The best thing that this resort offers is the beach. It's one of the best in Cancun.

Sun palace visit

This is me and my fiancées first time in cancun and after the ten hour flight from England it isn't to disappoint. The range of food, and restaurants is second to none including room service there is something to eat for everyone and the evening restaurants are very classy we love the Thai one and the breakfast buffet. The drinks and cocktails are nice and there is lots to choose from and the service from the bar staff is very good they are always waiting on you! Everyone is so friendly and informative in the hotel which is great. We are amazed at the standard of the hotel and even the toilets are so clean and everything is perfect. Antonio and chocolate are so much fun and such nice guys they are making our holiday so enjoyable. Also Alfredo the chef is so so smiley and friendly and a brilliant chef it's lovely to see him every morning! Can't recommend this place enough it's a shame we're going home on Friday!

Enjoyed our stay, but not perfect

My husband and I are members of the Palace Resorts. For our vacation this time, we chose the Sun Palace for three reasons: first, only couples, second, we had never stayed at the Sun Palace and third, the great reviews. Both the check-in and check-out process was great and took very little time. Montserrat was the sales representative who assisted us in finding ways to use some of the Palace credits - for me that was visiting the spa (which I'll talk about more in depth later). She was great and easy to talk with, actually talked with her awhile on the morning that we left. The only thing that I would suggest would to be for visitors or members to not go to the sales presentation at the Beach Palace. If you want to go and see what the Beach Palace looks like, take a taxi or a bus and visit without attending the 90 minute presentation. The one thing that I was upset about was that I told Montserrat that we were celebrating an early birthday for my husband (75 years old), but nothing was ever done for him, and nothing was ever mentioned. This was an important birthday for him, so we were disappointed. Now, for the member "update" 90 minute presentation at the Beach Palace. Since we hadn't been to an update for a few years and wanted to get the Columbus Dinner Cruise for attending, my husband and I decided to attend the presentation. We have both worked in sales so we understand and respect that the sales reps have a job to do. We also knew that we would not only be talking with the first sales rep (Arlette), but would end talking to at least two other people. If Arlette couldn't get us to upgrade our membership, then they bring in a manager. For me, Arlette was a little pushy but we went along with her anyway. She wasn't able to get us to buy anything more. The manager (a woman) did her job and of course came down on the price (typical sale pitch). Again, we said no thanks. So, the last person is one of the top managers (a man this time) who tried his sales push, lowering the price even more. Again, no deal and by then we were tired of listening. We could tell he was upset that his "talk" didn't work, but took us out to the desk in order to receive our "gift" (Columbus cruise) for attending. Once at the desk, the young man working there offered another deal, which actually was more along what we would be interested in - a one time trip to any of the Palace Resorts (even Jamaica Palace which is not in our membership) at a much reduced price (less than have the all inclusive cost). So they finally got us to spend a little money but on something we wanted - a visit to Jamaica. As we got ready to leave I turned around and there stood Arlette. She was upset that we bought the one time trip and had not bought into the upgrade she tried to sell us. Several thousand vs. $1,700 (with a small down payment) is a big deal to us especially when we don't have several thousand dollars to spend. Arlette was rude and tried to get us to change our minds with once again lowering the price for her "deal." We stuck with the one time vacation deal and walked out. Customer service was very good in all locations except the Italian restaurant. I agree with other reviews that there is no reason why men are required to wear long pants since it doesn't appear to matter what type of pants are worn (jeans, sweat pants) as long as the pants are "long". The restaurant is no different then the Asian, Steak, or Mexican restaurants. As far as the service, our server did not check up on us as much as in the other restaurants, and I thought I was going to have to get up and find some wine for my husband. Also, it took too long for the food to arrive, and the place with not busy at all. We found a big difference at the Mexican, Steak, and Asian restaurants - service was great and the food came right on time. I want to make a special comment regarding one of our servers, Luis. We first met Luis at the Asian restaurant, and found out that he can sing, which he did for us. Luis was always there when we needed something. He waited on us again at the Mexican restaurant and also during the special Thanksgiving buffet on Thursday night. Luis provided us with wonderful service, so much so that we would ask him where he would be working so we could make sure to ask for him. Thank you Luis!!Now, for the food. For the most part the food was good, especially breakfast. We enjoyed the variety and especially the fresh made omelets and pancakes. A few years ago, we had eaten at the steak restaurant when it was located inside the Sun Palace. On that visit, my husband had a great steak meal, so much so that he was looking forward to eating at the steak restaurant again on this trip. Unfortunately, he was very disappointed in the steak he received. It was cooked correctly (med rare), but very tough. I had the Salmon which was very good. On another night, my husband tried the filet in the Mexican restaurant, again, it was very tough and we are not sure that it was even a filet. He thought it was another cut, and very tough. It looked like he was sawing through the meat. It appears that the Palace has cut back on the quality of the food served. It is not as good as what we used to get when we first joined Palace. We have also become members of Legendary, (Hard Rock) and their quality of steaks are very good. Room - very nice, very clean and was located above the quiet pool - which was great for us. We also had a nice view of the ocean. We both love the beds that Palace has in their rooms.Spa - I had a back massage, facial, and marina wrap. Thanks to LoLo who did a wonderful job - I felt like a new person!! Also thanks to Roxy who did a good job on my med and ped. All of the employees at the spa are great.Pools - the long pool that is behind the main outside pool was nice and quiet. My husband was able to swim laps in it because not too many people use that one. The main pool outside (where they play volleyball) needs repair. My husband used to inspect pools in the U.S. and noticed that the pool's bottom surface has pealed away in places. Where it is pealing, some type of algae or fungus is growing. This won't hurt anyone, but should be removed and the pool resurfaced. He also noticed that it appeared that something is growing on the bottom sides of the pool. The water itself is treated properly and is very clear which is a good sign. The customer service at the pool was very good. Everyone is very friendly. The beach was beautiful, but the water was a little too rough to swim in. The water is a beautiful teal / blue color which we love. We had no problem finding a place to sit, and someone quickly set up an umbrella for us.Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Sun Palace and would return. At our age, we like the idea of a little smaller place, all adults, and having some peace and quiet.

More Unexpected Pleasures

As the reality of oncoming winter sets in, I am reminded of warmer days of summer and realize I have yet to let the TripAdvisor readers know of our latest stay at our very favorite resort. This past July 27-August 10, we traveled to Sun Palace for our annual anniversary/birthday celebration. Our two-week stay was our 11th and the most amazing yet, thanks to General Manager Pablo Winkler and his extraordinary staff who we are happy to call our family away from home. The consistency of service at Sun Palace is stunning. From private transport for Diamond Members (Thank you, Victor and Mario), to check-in, to beautiful balconied rooms and amenities, to dining in four diverse restaurants, to amazing spa and salon treatments, to a selection of swimming pools and a pristine well-maintained beach, to the unforgettable people who make it all possible. We experienced two weeks of beautiful weather, sunning, swimming, wonderful spa experiences, memorable dining, dancing and meeting fun people in the Lobby Bar. A few highlights include:Dining - In addition to the always informative delicious and entertaining Chef’s Dinner by Executive Chef Edgar Poot and Pablo Winkler, we were treated on our 43rd anniversary to a lovely Chef’s Table lunch in the La Trotto kitchen arranged by Chef Poot, where we were privileged to have Chefs Eduardo, Alfredo and Guillermo explain and prepare each of four amazing palate pleasing dishes for us. We had planned to have our Diamond Dinner on our anniversary at a special outdoor location, but a huge thunderstorm prevented that. We transferred to La Trotto where Chef Francisco prepared and presented a delicious meal and a very special flambe dessert. For Charles’ birthday, I worked with Claudia Islas our Diamond Concierge and Pamela Luna and Karla Pflug of Public relations to arrange a dinner prepared by Chef Eduardo on our balcony. They made magic! We surprised him with balloons everywhere, a superb meal that would rival a Michelin star restaurant in Europe – a feast for the eyes and palate served impeccably by Teodoro. An amazing full size decorated layer cake with candle personally made by Chef Eduardo topped off an unforgettable evening for the birthday boy. Later, after drinks, dancing and congratulations at the Bar, we enjoyed a beautifully decorated room and bubble bath compliments of Maxi Lopez, the housekeeping artiste. Pool and Beach – Sun Palace has created a new position called Pool Concierge and staffed it with the lovely Celic Martinez. She does her job very well and under her care and the ever attentive Ilyania, we wanted for nothing. Celic, along with pool and beach attendants Leslie and Karina conspired to surprise Charles on his birthday at the pool with a huge bunch of balloons and a cake. I will never forget his utter amazement and glee! Membership Upgrade - Our experience at Beach Palace was very pleasant. Arlette and Letitia made sure an unexpected problem with our contract was fixed and that our new contract reflected that correction. We are excited about the new Le Blanc being built in Cabo San Lucas and look forward to a future visit. Many Thanks to Special People: In addition to Pablo Winkler, the very best General Manager Palace Elite could ask for, and Claudia Islas, the superior Diamond Concierge whose professionalism and attention to detail is key to the consistent five-star experiences we enjoy at Sun Palace, the following people deserve special mention: Martin Cano, Front Desk Manager, who goes above and beyond for all guests; Santos and Samuel, Bellmen extraordinaire; Karla Pflug and Pamela Luna of Public Relations for their quiet can-do attitudes, effervescent smiles, hugs and special surprises; Mario DeWitt, a force of nature; Restaurant Managers Omar Moreno, Efrain, Mario DeWitt, Marta, Patricia, Jose and Jorge; all of their hostesses and wait staffs (especially Patrice and Ingrid, Mauricio, Mario, Saydi, Enedino, Abimaeil, Moises, Juan Carlos, Javier and Juaquin). Chefs Eduardo (Alamo - Thank you for our special soup), Francisco (Trotto) for amazing meals; the chefs at Steak and Thai (Filiberto) for amazing shrimp tempura and our special dessert; Chef Maria at the pool for my special guacamole; Chefs Alfredo and Alberto for wonderful waffles and omelets; Dalia, Enrique and Ricardo, Damian Angel and Tomas, breakfast servers who help with our Spanish; Efeda, Karina, Rene and the bartenders who always know what we want before we ask; Executive Chef Edgar Poot, Pablo Winkler and hostess for yet another stunning dining experience and entertainment at Chef’s Dinner. Carlos, Jose-Daniel, Octavio, Domingo, Karina and Leslie, pool and beach attendants who always remember our preferences in drink and snacks; Ilyana, Public Areas for all she does; Teodoro, Rodolfo wonderful room service; Everyone in Concierge Housekeeping, especially Ana, Blanca, Carlos and Maxi (days), and those seen (Roaban and Josue) and unseen artists who prepared bubble baths and creative room decorations; Acuario, Jhovanny, Monica and Primavera for the best massages and facials, and Gerta, Monica Araceli Elizabeth and Flora for mani-pedis and haircuts that last. Thank you also to Salma and Spa Manager Raphael Perez. Where he is limited by less than ideal facilities, he excels in staff and service – the best of all the Palace resorts. I am certain to have forgotten the names of other special people, but will be sure to thank them in person when we return in April to Sun Palace, our home away from home, where five-star consistent service and food is the norm, not the exception.

Sensational

Came to Sun Palace to celebrate my 50th birthday , had a fantastic time , loved every single second .Booked through Thompson in the UK.flew the dreamliner from Gatwick, superb upgraded to Premuim was worth every penny .On arrival at Cancun airport it was chaotic , with long queues to passport control, the baggage line was worse with 3 flights using the same conveyor belt at once .my luggage came first ,my partners 40 mins later. Another long queue, then through immigration you have to push a button , green you go straight though , if your unlucky enough to get red , you are subject to extra searches..we got the red ..but all staff at all points where friendly .you finally go through what is known as the shark tank , keep your eyes straight ahead and ignore till you get outside and see your reps etc .We then quickly boarded our transfer bus and was at Sun Palace very quickly and in paradise We was greeted of the bus with a cold towel and a welcoming smile. Shown to reception and given a beautiful flower.booked in quickly , but no welcoming drink. We was allocated a jnr suite with the most phenomenal view .room 309 would highly recommend this room as was overlooking the quite pool & perfectly suited our needs .the huge bed was even more comfy than the one I have at home & gorgeous linen..large double jacuzzi in our room with a view of the ocean .Our first night we eat at the steak restaurant overlooking the quite pool & ocean .the service was fantastic and the steak delicious. Slept like a log .up early the next morning was met at the door by a lovely lady called Miriam I wish I could remember the other lady's name she worked with, she was lovely to .the breakfast completely blew me away , I have honestly never seen since much choice. Was overwhelmed by the choice and it tasted as good as it looked to .was lucky enough to be served by Rolando on our first morning. He was awesome .very friendly hard working and helped to make our holiday he went beyond the call of duty .a real credit to this hotel .we asked to be sat In his section every day after that..which Miriam made happen. We spent most of our days around the activity pool. My partner joining in volleyball and making great friends with fellow guests.pedro who is on the entertainment team works so very hard engaging all the guests , but never pushy with it .another real credit to Sun palace as was Jose Daniel , goodness me , he worked very hard, always smiling as he served the drinks around the pool .he soon learnt guests names and everybody loved him .he also stands out to me .The loungers where very comfy by the pool but if you want a good place you have to play the towel game and be there early .the drinks and snack bar by this pool was delicious .I must have tried everything on the cocktail menu. .We eat at the Italian twice .gentleman please remember no shorts as you will be turned away .again the food was superb with excellent service .The Mexican was OK. But tbh this is not my fave type of food anyhow, the service was again excellent. We never got to try the Thai as was busy with 40 mins wait .tip get there early .We did the couples massage , using the credits .these are not a scam you pay the 16% tax.making it very good value .had a fabulous massage .can highly recommend .Took the opportunity to vist beach palace for half a day .loved it but was happy to get back to Sun.Also visited moon palace to big for us and also took the ferry to the Isle. Palace. Being able to vist and use the other facilities of the palace hotels is a winner in my bookWe took the bus a couple of times in the main area ..the bus stops outside of hotel and is just a dollar anywhere .good value and safe .just tell the driver where you want to get of and sit near frount to remind him .We went shopping away from the designer areas.just needing cheap souvenirs.local craft etc much better value ,ask doorman he will tell you where to go..There was only a couple of cons on this holiday and the main one being sometimes our room was not serviced till gone 4pm and after a long day at the pool etc we just wanted to chill out in our room ..Also the hard push to go to a presentation. Which is no matter how they dress it up .timeshare . Be very firm .one guy was particularly awful .so friendly and when he realised that there was no way on earth despite his hard sell that I was not going Appeared to get the right hump he is on the main desk opposite reception .avoid him at all costs .Aside from him the main thing that sets this hotel apart from everything esle is its staff.they are the most caring genuine staff that I have ever met it really is like being on a cruise ship on land .I would go back in a heartbeatThe sea is the most bluest I've ever seen, although was to rough for me to swim in .there is an excellent life guard there really watching everyone like a hawk and taking good care of those in the sea.think his name was Daniel .the loungers are again thick & comfy .also plentiful. The sand was soft underfoot .hardly any seaweed. We also used the credits for a romantic meal on the beach .although worth it for the setting the food was disappointing. The service was excellent as usual .We was very sad to leave sun palace. Was the holiday that i had hoped for and more .ps the airport on way home was totally different and a breeze Thank you to all for making my birthday special .. .

FANTASTIC resort!!!

First if you are on the fence about booking this resort just do it. It is a fabulous place. Very clean, professional and kind staff, good food, great amenities, excellent bar and awesome pool area. Here are a few tips: 1. bring a bunch $1 bills for tipping--although the staff do not expect tips, they certainly appreciate it and they sure earn it. 2. Ladies--bring extra packs of Kleenex---if you go on any excursions and they stop at a rest stop most of the bathrooms do not have toilet paper.3. bring small bar of detergent soap for hand washing clothes4. hand sanitizers.....bring a ton...5. bring bendy straws for sipping on drinks on the beach----trust me just do it6. make sure to book transportation to and from the airport through the resort. AVOID all sales people at the airport---when you land and you have gone through customs and you have your luggage---go straight outside to transportation area. Do not make eye contact with the sales people-they are very aggressive and will try to sell you time shares or some kind of crap like that. Once you go outside there are representatives from the resort who will get you to your designated resort. 7. If you book your excursion to Chichen Itza--make sure to wear comfortable shoes, large brim hat and 2 HUGE bottles of water!! Trust me on this---there is NO shade and it is VERY HOT!! Also pack snacks for the trip, because it is a long day.
