Our OpinionThe Melia Cozumel is a great resort for those wanting a relaxing getaway. A very laid back resort with amazing views of the beach. The food items are OK. For those looking for a luxurious getaway, there are a variety of other options available for a better deal.
Location: On the beach, 10 min to town of San Miguel, 15 min from the airport.
My friend and I had a wonderful time in Cozumel. It was very relaxing, the beach was amazing but the friendly staff made the trip perfect. The rooms are a little dated but other than sleeping at night and getting ready for dinner, we spent no time there. The beach is too perfect, so as soon as we were up we were out the door. The food was great. All of the staff were so friendly; Deigo, Freddie, Domingo, Alejandro, Alberto all worked at La Iguana our favorite place for a snack and dinner. They are all so kind and hardworking. Antonio, Max and Ignatio at the buffet were so sweet to us. We really enjoyed eating there everyday because of them.
Really liked this place. Staff are very nice and more than happy to help you in any way. The sand on the beach was so soft and there was always an abundance of beach chairs. The pool water was so cold, we couldn't go swimming (and we don't mind cool pool water!)Very close to the airport. The bed was very comfortable and the linens were nice too.I don't think they have anything under the food trays in the buffet to keep the food warm. I didn't want to eat food that had been sitting there at room temperature or becoming stone cold. So, the only disappointment I had was the buffet. If it had been hot, I would have thought everything to be great. The snack bar at the beach was very good.
Melia Cozumel is an all around great resort! My family and I stayed in the tower, on the 9th floor. The view from the balcony was breathtaking, with the turquoise ocean spread out before you, and a scene of the adult pool and disco at night. The room was well cleaned daily with a good supply of clean towels and toiletries. The mini bar in room was refilled daily with drinks of your choosing. At one point the housekeeper had left us a full case of water. Amenities are all less than a 5 minute walk from the room, which was convenient. The restaurants were good, and the buffet always had a wide selection of fresh tasting (and looking) foods. The hours are the best I've seen in all of the destinations we have travelled. Breakfast is open from 7-11, lunch goes until 4pm, and dinner is served as late as 11! The Iguana Grill restaurant is amazing, we ate there twice and both dinners were exquisite. The service was also over the top, with Diego leading his serving team excellently. He personally went out of his way to thank us for coming and ask how we enjoyed our evening. The three bars were conveniently located and well stocked with premium spirits. William at the beach bar worked tirelessly to keep us all hydrated. The lobby is air conditioned with fast, free wifi, a definite plus. For a small resort, there is a lot to do, including mini golf and a games room. We went on two excursions, the undersea submarine tour, which was well worth it, as we saw a shark, a sea turtle, and beautiful coral reefs along with countless reef fish, and the island tour by jeep, which was good, but if you decide to do it, skip the tour of the botanical gardens and use that extra time to snorkel or chill on the beach. The beach at the resort was okay. Most of the parts owned by the hotel had tons of seaweed, murky water, and zero fish, but if you walked a short distance past the pier near the hotel El Cozumelo, you were met with crystal clear waters and schools upon schools of tropical fish. However, the beach at Melia was great for suntanning. One negative was the entertainment; the daytime activities were rather lame, the "crazy games" one day was guessing the amount of pages in a book, and the next day they skipped over the crazy games altogether. At night it was either group dancing or live music, and neither were very good, although you could tell that the entertainment staff were trying their best to make people feel included. However, karaoke or a game involving randomly selected guests would have been easy to put together. The disco is just some lighting set up on the terrace outside the lobby bar. Part of the problem here may have been that the age demographic is mostly retired. My wife and I are in our 40's and usually end up at a larger resort with more activities. Melia great for sun but short on fun!
We travelled as a couple and had read the reviews regarding it being a very quiet resort but we didn't realize it was that quiet and almost shut down by 10:30 each night. We caught a few of the evening shows but since they seemed pretty juvenile we scheduled our a la Cartes for 8pm since we knew we weren't missing much. The food was good; the beach was beautiful but the pool was quite cold. I don't like how they re-use the plastic cups since they just seem to get a quick rinse at the pool and beach bar. There was a "scheduled power outage" on the Sunday from 7am to 3pm; we received the note in our door late Saturday night had we been aware of this "scheduled power outage" we would have planned our day to playa del Carmen on the Sunday instead of Saturday. The diesel smell from the generators was making my boyfriend ill so we had to ensure we weren't close to the building. Our room was in the tower so without having power it was quite difficult trying to find clothes in the closet or anything that was left in the bathroom. The next 2 days we had let the water run a few minutes before showering since the water was a rusty Brown color. Again a bit of warning would have been appreciated. We had a great time and met some great people there but it's the first resort we both agreed we would not return to.
We had a wonderful time at the Melia. The pools were very nice and also the bars. Very clean and the service was excellent! The entertainment crew was also great and made the activities fun for all! You won't be disappointed staying here!
