Our OpinionThe Melia Cozumel is a great resort for those wanting a relaxing getaway. A very laid back resort with amazing views of the beach. The food items are OK. For those looking for a luxurious getaway, there are a variety of other options available for a better deal.
Location: On the beach, 10 min to town of San Miguel, 15 min from the airport.
On the first impression the resort looks pretty good. The positives some of the staff. Enrique at the Beach Side Bar was great. The shows at night were pleasant. However at one of the shows we were the only people there. The performers were very good. Like I said on fist impression. I had an Ocean Front suite. The room smelled terribly. They could not switch us. The Air conditioner was mediocre. The room was cleaned daily and was done nicely. The buffet was terrible. All of the bread, rolls etc were stale everyday. There bugs crawling in some of the desert plates. Adults and children were eating directly out of there serving dishes. Grabbing food with their hands. It was disgusting. The Italian Restaurant was terrible. The Mexican Restaurant was good, however you had to eat as fast as possible because the mosquitos were eating you faster then you can down a fajita. The biggest negative the beach. The water was choked with brown seaweed. This turned the water an ugly brown. You had to walk over 1/2 mile to get to clean water at another resort where the hassled us for leaving a towel on the beach while we swam. Last but not least the power was shut off in the resort on Monday. They should have communicated this to the guest as we had to pack in the dark with no AC.I would not return to this place!
The rooms were great (we had the premium oceanfront room). Service excellent. Food was par for the cost, not exceptional, not bad. I picked this hotel because I love to snorkel, but there was very little to see on the one day the water was clear. The other days the water was a dark brown. Locals said it all depends on the water current. If current is from the north it brings residue from the mango groves. If the current is from the south, the water is clear. HOWEVER the snorkeling at the hotel beside the Melia is very good because there are two cement piers that block the currents.
My wife and I spent one week at the Melia Cozumel Golf Resort and had a wonderful time. The room was exceptionally nice and very clean. We had an oceanfront room and the view was spectacular other than looking at seaweed. The entire staff was very friendly, accommodating and pleasant. There are plenty of different food selections at the buffets and a al carte restaurants. Like any other resorts, some meals where very good and others where so so. My wife and I ate at least 3 meals a day for 7 days and neither one of us got sick or went hungry. The golf course, across the street, was also nice to play. They have crocodiles on the course but I didn't see one and I played two rounds. It is a championship course, some holes are tight but overall fairly wide. You will loose some balls. I met the golf pro Benny Campos who was very friendly and accommodating. The only disappointment my wife and I had was the beach. We experienced large, I mean large, amount of seaweed that floated in the front of the resort and collected on the beach in large piles. We did swim a few days in front of the resort but with seaweed floated around and on you. We did walk over to the next resort, swam and snorkeled there. No seaweed at all.(they built a wall separating the two resorts). We also walked the length of the beach each day which was quite enjoyable. I rented a car for a day and drove around the island. It was a fun day.Overall I enjoyed my week, of course, if the seaweed problem was not there, I would have enjoyed it much much more. If the beach is your primary reason for vacation, I would not recommend this resort, keeping in mind, this is not the resorts doing. If the beach is not your priority than definitely go and enjoy yourself. Thank you Melia for a wonderful week.
Stayed at the Melia Cozumel Golf on April 26 just for the day. The staff is what really made this day trip memorable. The Reception Desk staff was superb. The gentleman that greeted us at check in was very professional, friendly and very accommodating. I reserved 2 rooms and informed the hotel that it would be helpful if they were side by side and if they could honor an early check in. I was impressed that all my requests were honored when I arrived at the hotel at 10am. The check in process was smooth and effortless. I forgot my passport at the Reception Desk and it was quickly returned to me. The hotel orientation and information provided was very helpful and the fact that my guest and me were personally escorted by a staff member gave it a special touch. Surprisingly food was very good. I had very low expectation of it but was definitively impressed by the quality. Not much to chose from but the few options are good. Our server was very nice and funny. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Definitively would stay here again and recommend to others.
Truly enjoyed our stay. It was a stress free vacation. Highly recommended. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We literally encountered no problems. The restaurants were great and food was good. We will definitely be back!
