Our OpinionThe Melia Cozumel is a great resort for those wanting a relaxing getaway. A very laid back resort with amazing views of the beach. The food items are OK. For those looking for a luxurious getaway, there are a variety of other options available for a better deal.
Location: On the beach, 10 min to town of San Miguel, 15 min from the airport.
Wonderful staff. Friendly and engaging. If you have children, the activity staff will keep them (and parents if you are willingly) busy with all kinds of games and sports. They will know you by name after day one. Buffet good. Typical fare and it provides lots of fresh fruit, fish, pork, chicken and beef. There is no pool or beach waiter service. Heard some grumbling about it. We didn't care. Tourist from all over. Argentina. Mexico. U.S.A and Canada. There is a newer and fancier hotel next door that seems to have all the bells and whistle but the staff at Melia are outstanding. We were very impressed.
Rooms were very nice, clean and the resort was small enough that service was personalized. Meals were good, but not always great. The beach was very nice and kept as clean as could be expected when high winds and surf brought lots of kelp ashore. Family area was separate from the rest of the resort and this was enforced at the pool as well.
We returned to the Melia in late February 2017 for another week of sun and golf. Would not consider staying anywhere else. We had a beautiful room on the 2nd floor of the tower. Wonderful view of the adult pool and the ocean. All the staff from the front desk to the doormen, maids, bartenders, and waiters are really friendly and helpful. Most of them have been there every year and it is good to see them. We include the inclusive golf in our package every year and golf daily. It is a perfect 15-20 minute walk from the hotel. They clean and keep your clubs right at the club house. We eat at the buffet most nights as it seems to have the most options. We did try the Italian one night but really did not like the limited menu options. They replaced the mattresses in the rooms on our floor and the second floor - maybe more while we were there. Great sleeping. We will be returning the same time next year and cannot wait.
The Melia Resort was fantastic and we loved all the helpful, fun, friendly and charming staff, especially Mary, Maria, Nolberto and Sussy (who took great care of our little boy in the kids program). Cozumel is beautiful, the resort is excellent with delicious food, nice pools and great service. The only drawbacks - the seaweed in front of the resort blocks visibility in the ocean so you have to walk south of the Cozumeleno Resort to find clear water and decent snorkeling (rocky entry but it's calm so not a problem). This may only be a temporary condition - I've seen pictures of the Melia with turquoise water. Also, the adult pool was too cool. The family pool is great and the beach and sand are lovely. We took the kayaks out a couple times and the current was strong in the afternoon. Snorkeling and boating were best in the morning. It's only a $7 cab ride to town - check out the fountain in the town square. We had a great afternoon on the Fury for a catamaran snorkel trip which included lunch at a beach with paddleboards and giant inflatables in the water - fun! We all loved our week at the Melia and enjoyed the beautiful location, perfect weather, friendly staff, great food (the International restaurant is excellent and the buffet has a nice assortment of fresh food) and entertainment. Muchas gracias para todo!!
overall this place is very good. Not awesome, but better than good. Nice beach and while the hotel was supposed to be full, there were always beach chairs to be had. the pool bar. which annoyingly closed right at 6, was adults only, which was good. there was a separate kids pool good which works for everyone. It's an all inclusive. The buffet was fine. nothing awesome, but fine. Paradiso, was their probably finer dining, nice spot small menu but the steak was fine. The Mexican option was probably the best. The Italian was actually on the porch of the buffet and not my favorite, but its a nice spot at night. Even though it's a golf resort, golf was extra and not cheap. but it's a nice course, but a little short and tight, bring extra balls. And we played 18 in under 4 hours. nice bonus. They can set up tours at the hotel and we used them for one tour and they did a nice job. They have cars and scooters on property to rent so they make tours easy. The staff was helpful, just the usual Mexican slowdowns. No big deal. The downtown is about a 10 minute ride to all the tourist/cruise ship shops. the north side doesn't have much just a few hotels, so if you want to get out you are taking a ride. Overall, the property is a year or two away from a big renovation, or should be, but it's a good spot and they do a nice job. We upgraded to an oceanview which was worth it for the week. No complaints.
