The Occidental Cozumel is a pleasant hotel. The rooms are spacious and well maintained. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive. The buffet and restaurants in the resort have a tendency to be open during specific times, so make sure to have a flyer handy to be informed what restaurants are open. Overall this is a great all-inclusive hotel for the entire family.
This was my first time visiting Cozumel, and first time traveling alone with my 8 year old son. Occidental Cozumel exceeded every expectation we had and more. This place is our paradise- it is heaven on earth. When we arrived our check in was really fast, which was awesome since we had been traveling alllllll day. We were taken on a golf cart to our room to get settled in. The room was cool, clean, and beautiful. We loved our view from the balcony. My son and I spent a lot of time walking around looking at all the plants and finding all the cool animals (pigs, iguanas, frogs, crabs, hummingbirds, etc). The flora/fauna was definitely one of our favorite parts (bring bug spray!). The beach is stunning- a little bit of a walk but we didn't mind at all. There aren't words to describe how beautiful and serene it felt. When we were there sitting on the beach surrounded by palm trees it was out of a dream come true. The pool area was also beautiful and ping pong was a big hit. I enjoyed playing pool volleyball but also sat back and watched a few games, which was actually pretty comical. We both enjoyed all the food we ate and my son especially loved the buffet. The lunch buffet was eh, but the breakfast/dinner was great. Neither of us were ever hungry. The doughnuts and ice cream were a special bonus. The staff here are all amazing. Everyone is very friendly, and vibrant. It really made me feel safe and relaxed. The gardeners work really hard, and didn't hesitate when my son asked them to open a coconut for him to drink- which made him super happy. Oscar helped us make reservations for snorkeling which was one of the highlights of our vacation. We did get kinda sucked into listening about the timeshare/purchase option- which i wouldn't have minded but it's just too long. It was our first real day there and we wanted to explore and go to the beach, and 3-4 hours of my vacation time should not be spent listening to a sale. I may have been interested in it had it not taken so long, because by the end I was just annoyed and wanted to go to the beach (I mean, that's why weren't there, right?) Occidental is simply beautiful, the staff is great, and we loved it. We're already planning our next visit, and I asked my son where he wants to go and he's not interested in anywhere but here.
My wife and I are seasoned travelers and group leaders. This is our second stay at the Occidental diving with Pro Dive, which is on property and couldn't be more convenient! The resort itself is immaculate. The property is carved out of the jungle and mangroves and is immaculately landscaped and maintained, seamlessly blending nature with nurture. Beyond what you'd expect at a higher end resort, great food, friendly and attentive service, daily and nightly entertainment, we love the wildlife! You can not walk from your room to the restaurant or dive shop without encountering many varieties of local critters. Iguanas, pigs, families of cuatimundis, lizards turtles frogs and lots of birds lizards, turtles, frogs and lots of birds. We even saw an armadillo come out of the foliage, cross the walkway and back into the dense greenery as if saying "you don't see me". In terms of diving, there is not a better location on the island, with some of the best diving literally right out front of the resort itself We are looking forward to our next visit!
The hotel was very accommodating and everyone and very friendly. My group went mainly to scuba dive. My dive master Flo was great. I had a problem equalizing my ears and he allowed my to descend at my own pace and was able to overcome this problem. He showed us numerous questions nterestng dive sites. When we finally nshed diving Jonathan Tamay, Comelio Dzul, and Maros Balam took fantastic care of our gear and it was always ready for us the next dive. They made the vacation so much more enjoyable
My wife and I, traveling with my brother and sister-in-law, stayed at the Occidental Grand Cozumel for 4 nights in August. Check-in: As previous reviews state, the individuals working check-in could use some help with their people skills. This was the least-enjoyable part of our time at the OGC. The people working the 2 check-in desks were inattentive and broadcast the "I wish you were not here, so I didn't have to deal with you" attitude. They could not be bothered with the simplest of requests, including something as simple as trading our towels for the $50 (if the towel was not returned) towel cards...when the two towel-exchange locations were closed due to Hurricane Franklin. I did bring this issue to the attention of management, who immediately rectified the situation to our satisfaction.Food: The food at the buffets was adequate and good tasting. Breakfast included made-to-order omelettes. Lunch was served at the beach-front restaurant and each night featured a different theme at the Buffett. The food at Los Olives was excellent, average at the Mexican specialty restaurant and not very good to inedible of the seafood specialty restaurant. Los Olives is worth waiting to make a reservation for. I would not waste my time eating to make a reservation for the other 2.Room: All rooms are "jungle view". Our room was quite large, with a king size bed and a very large bathroom. We stayed in room 1025, which is in the first building, closest to the lobby, Los Posadas Buffett (breakfast and dinner), the lobby bar and nightly entertainment areas. It was a walk to the pools and beach, but we liked being closer to the main area.Pools: Are your average all-inclusive pools, one for activities and an adult-only pool.Beach: The beach was average and the water was quite rocky...I would recommend water shoes for getting past the first 10 feet from the water line.Bars: The service ranged from excellent (at the Lobby Bar and Adults-only pool bar) and acceptable to offensive (at the Beach Club Bar). The offensive comment stems from Franklin (an employee) walking behind the bar, not to speed up service for all, but to make drinks for "special" guests who did not feel like waiting in the line, and handing them to the 2 individuals-in front of those of use waiting our turn. Again, the issue was brought to the attention of management and rectified.Overall, we had a great time. the resort is relatively small, but long. It is a 5 minute walk from the rooms furthest from the pools/beach to the pools and beach.Although we did not travel with our daughter, there did not appear to be very much to keep the 12- 16 year olds entertained.I would recommend staying here for a few days, a full week could become boring.
Great location and great beach. The rooms are great as well. Most of the staff at the hotel seems unmotivated and the service is not that great. Over all for us as divers it a great place to stay. I've been coming to Cozumel for the last fifteen years. And for me it's all about being close to the best reefs. And this hotel is in a prime location
