Our Opinion
The Occidental Grand Cozumel is a pleasant hotel. The rooms are spacious and well maintained. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive. The buffet and restaurants in the resort have a tendency to be open during specific times, so make sure to have a flyer handy to be informed what restaurants are open. There has been some complaints about the separate timeshare employees. Overall however, a great hotel to go visit.
Ideal for water lovers - especially divers - this hotel is located on beautiful San Francisco beach just 5 minutes by boat to Palancar Reef. Fun is sure to be had by all, from participating in the many activities hosted by the 'Fun Club' staff to dancing until morning at the on-site disco.
Location: Beachfront, 10 min to downtown Cozumel, 20 min from Cozumel International Airport.

This all inclusive will be great - once it completes construction. It would have been nice to know it was under construction at time of booking. Apparently Occidental was procured by Barcelo and is undergoing major remodeling. The noise of construction was distracting, very loud & not conducive to a relaxing vacation. Much less the hundreds of construction workers passing all times of day & night. It would have been better to close the resort for a couple of months rather than keep it open under these conditions. The main pool was under construction, as well as the beach side cafe (the main one used during the day). There was another temp one set up, but on the beach. This kind of construction should be widely advertised - the dozens of folks we met knew nothing of it either. A group from New Zealand was particularly irritated (as I would be too coming from that distance). I was told pool wouldn't open until February so I would expect construction to continue through that timeframe though I did not ask specifically.And then when you first check in watch out for the "we have a special check in gift for you" that was nothing more than a time share pitch that ended up wasting an hour of our life.I requested a king size bed with the romance package for our 1 year anniversary. When we got there, they said they were out of king beds. I told them I specifically asked for king size because my husband is 6'8" and they were trying to fit us in a DOUBLE bed. I threw a small hissy fit & they suddenly found a king sized room.Do not pay extra for the romance package as there was nothing different than any other room, or package. IF you can get past these major issues, the rooms are wonderful. Beds are hard but we slept great. They have ceiling fans & the a/c is excellent. Best rooms of any all inclusive I have been to (10+), very spacious & great bathrooms with separate jetted tub & huge shower. Water goes hot & cold, hot & cold- heard this from several others as well.Food was good, prob the best from AI - we aren't very picky with food- as long as we find a couple of things that will keep us from starving, we are good. Only offered beer & wine in the dinner buffet, which I thought strange.Beach bar closed early - around 5:30, when there was a good 1.5 more hours of day light left. Bars are typical - weak drinks, that is expected. Staff is friendly & helpful with any of our requests.None of the rooms are ocean front or view, and I should have thought of that, but I didn't & that was my bad - not Occidental/Barcelo. Grounds were nice and well kept but beware you need to be able to walk easily, we got our 10,000 steps in just from going from room to breakfast to beach to room etc. Overall, I would not return and before booking, I would make sure to call any Occidental or Barcelo resort to make sure they aren't under construction - because I can assure when booking on Occidental's website there was no mention of it. Also to clarify what a romance package (or any other package) gets for you.

old lady getaway

I am a 67 year old woman. I am married, but my husband was not able to go on this trip, so I went alone. I had absolutely no fears of my safety during my week of swimming in the ocean, walking along the paths and bridge to and from my room to the ocean, reading on my balcony, writing at my desk in my room. It is a quiet place to relax, though there are plenty of people around. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is wonderfully prepared and displayed. The only downside I can imagine is the problem of getting around in Mexico if you are physically handicapped. The resort itself is on one level, except for an area on an upper deck, the only place where there is wi-fi available for club members. I'm sure mobility is a problem in any country, so it has to be planned out in advance. I will definitely return to the Occidental Grand Cozumel, with more family next time.

If I could give this half a point I would!!

What a joke!! I thought all the bad reviews couldn't be true, well I was wrong they are!! And then some! So arrived for our honeymoon, got told no King beds, I couldn't even pay to upgrade!! The main pool was closed so the entire resort is horded to the smaller pool no where near the beach! The food is worse then what they say, tv is terrible, shower water is temperamental, they push time share on you as soon as you enter! Then the building concierge pretends to be helpful and books you in for a free VIP brekkie, which is timeshare. There is beer advised as being supplied in the mini bar, on the website and the inclusions sheet they give you. When we looked there was none so I addressed this with the 'concierge' and he said "oh no no beer sorry"! Again what a joke!! I am telling you we will not be spending the next 4 nights here how depressing and we will be taking these issues to their head office! They cannot operate a place this poorly! I will use every online media forum to tell people just how bad this resort is!! Disgusted honestly!!

Stolen Camera - Corrupt Resort

My camera was stolen from my room. I know all my doors and windows were locked. Had to of been employee or construction worker or they are working together to steal your stuff. Booked a junior suite at the Allegro, but closed for remodeling. Moved us to Royal Club at Occidental Grand but received deluxe room instead of suite. Occident Grand under construction too. Closed down pool on Wednesday. Will be closed for weeks. Maid will clean your room without any cleaning products. Buffet food is average at best. Even though all inclusive you better leave a tip or they will treat you poorly the next time you come into restaurant. The whole place is corrupt. Rented a car but had to go outside of the resort to pick it up so they could make the arrangements under the table. Same thing with snorkeling trip, but they want you to pay cash, so they can get their share illegally. Everything is shady. This whole place is corrupt. This is less than average hotel. View from patio or balcony is mangrove. No good view.

Nicely Done

Occidental Grand was a solid B+ in my mind. In transition to new owners who appear to be pouring alot of money into the property. Good facilities and the two restaurants that require reservations were solid, though the buffet facilities' food was weak.The staff was very helpful, couldn't do enough for us,warm and genuinely friendly, a really heartwarming feeling!Recommended!
