Our OpinionA gem of a resort with great value. The Playa Azul is a modest little resort. Despite being a little smaller than most of the major resorts around the strip, there is no shortage of quality and luxury. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive, and there are a variety of activities to do within and outside of the resort grounds. The food is OK. It is recommended that travelers explore other options with regards to food. Overall, an amazing hotel for its value.
We have been here many times - last one year ago. When our 2017 plans for another island imploded due to weather cancellations and delays I was amazed and thrilled to find a vacant room and Delta flights available for the next day! Next thing I knew we were arriving in Cozumel and welcomed to Playa Azul. When the first room had two small double beds, they were happy and able to move us to a room with a king size bed (in fact the room we had enjoyed the year before, #105). Every staff member at Playa Azul, from front desk (Yassir) to waitstaff in the dining room (Carlos) were there to make our days pleasant and easier. I think there must be a new chef in the kitchen - last year evening meals were "adequate", this year the menu was extensive, showcasing seafood (mahi-mahi, shrimp, octopus) as well as local favors. Breakfast was more than adequate - omelets on request (or burritos, scrambled eggs, French toast), good fresh fruit (including bananas for the turtles), local specialties as sides, lots of sausage and bacon for the carnivores. Lovely beach front bar serves drinks and light food throughout the day. Spending a day "on the beach" or at poolside is fabulous, as is going for a diving or snorkeling adventure, only to return home for a warm shower, a cold beer, and a nap. Snorkeling off the beach at Playa Azul is surprisingly good - fish, small spotted sting rays, ever seahorses! We find the north side of the island quiet, removed from the cruise ships which overrun the town, and just relaxing! And finally praise for Monce, the masseuse at Savia Spa at the hotel - she is amazing, and a 50 minute massage is a great way to start (or end) your vacation. The only negative is the golf client during our week at Playa Azul...noisy, heavy drinkers who disrupted other couples' quiet evening meals. This may vary week to week, group to group, but was a considerable distraction from our enjoyment of this remarkable small hotel.
Low key hotel located on the beach with beautiful views, good snorkeling, friendly staff, and visitors from many places including Mexico. Very authentic feel. Room was lovely and well kept. Food was very good and hotel restaurant right on the beach. Loved it!
We stayed there Christmas week and would probably go back. The hotel was clean and friendly and sort of intimate. The weather was superb but I can't give the hotel credit for that. Some nice things: taxis always nearby, and just $5 to town or anywhere else; we made full use of the golf ($31 per person "cart fee") and in the afternoon, especially the course nearby thinned out and one could play through. It was a nice but not lavish course, and we returned every day for either 9 or 18 holes; the scuba shop at the hotel was good - we went out with them for one full day of diving and they were very professional - bring cash as they do not take credit cards; the breakfasts were ok, good omelets. Small negatives: one day the cleaning crew did not get to my sons' room even though we reminded the front desk; they twice neglected to bring fresh towels. The hotel could really use a gym -although jogging on the outside path/bike lane was just fine. I wish the hotel had bikes to borrow, as both town and golf are within easy and flat bike range. If we returned and moved to the Coral Princess it would be for these two features.
My family has come here two years in a row for vacation and have loved this hotel. The staff is very consistent and caring. They remembered us from last year and pay great attention to detail, remember your name and make sure you feel at home. The restaurant is great and cooked out family's catch from a day of fish, the bar is great, the snorkeling at the beach around the hotel is superb and makes fora great activity without even leaving the hotel and I love the ocean view. The only negative thing I have to say is about the speed of the wifi, but I have loved my past two vacations here.
My family have stayed at Playa Azul many times, wonderful staff and good food. The front desk is always helpful when you have questions. Nice peaceful beach. A wonderful relaxing vacation. Will go again!
