Our OpinionA gem of a resort with great value. The Playa Azul is a modest little resort. Despite being a little smaller than most of the major resorts around the strip, there is no shortage of quality and luxury. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive, and there are a variety of activities to do within and outside of the resort grounds. The food is OK. It is recommended that travelers explore other options with regards to food. Overall, an amazing hotel for its value.
I just returned from a 5 night stay here with my teenage son and although I haven't written TripAdvisor reviews for a while, Playa Azul is fully deserving of praise, and I know when I put together my Cozumel vacation I relied pretty heavily on TripAdvisor. This is a very special property. It's small- so you can get to know the staff and other guests, but has a lot of amenities. It's very quiet, service is great, rooms are large and comfortable, and there is a very nice small beach with lovely coral for snorkeling. You know how at big resorts there's a rush for beach chairs in the morning? That doesn't happen here- plenty of comfy beach chairs under palapas for everyone. The breakfasts are phenomenal- each morning they have four different Mexican main dishes at the buffet, plenty of fruit- they will even make you an espresso drink. No need for lunch after a breakfast like this. The cost was, I think, reasonable for what you get. The cost of drinks was reasonable. My son had a health emergency while we were there (in the middle of a tropical storm, no less) and the staff was incredibly helpful and responsive. I loved their library of books. The pool was very pleasant. And the presence of the excellent dive shop on property was a bonus. I would happily stay here again. The only issues were the tremendous number of jet skis and boats from a neighboring property- they were annoying, but I never felt like I was in any danger from them. And the food on the main menu could be improved. We ate dinner there a couple of nights, and I can't say anything we had was great. the pizzas on the lunch/dinner menu were clearly frozen. It almost seemed like the breakfast and dinners came out of different kitchens. Like why was there fresh squeezed orange juice at breakfast, but concentrate at lunch? But a taxi into town was only 95 pesos, so there's not really any reason to eat dinner at the hotel in the first place. A great property, and one I am very pleased I was able to stay at.
Staff was excellent, we went on off season, vast majority bent over backwards for us. Very nice! Rooms could be upgraded, looks like they are trying but the more expensive things ie) new tile probably wont get done, and really needs it. we had broken tiles in bathroom and more than likely mold growing in shower. We had a harsh smell when we returned to our room, but opened the door to the beautiful outside and it helped. beds were fine, pillows too firm for our liking. Hot shower only 3 out of the 8 days but didn't matter much since it was so hot outside. Food could use more variety- Breakfast was included which was nice but it was the same everyday.
We had a change of plans last minute while in Riviera Maya, we happened upon Playa Azul after deciding to hop over to Cozumel. We were pleasantly surprised and had a wonderful week relaxing by the cool clear shoreline. The service was great, the view was amazing, and the food was pretty good. Our room was beachfront and had the best views of the shoreline and sunsets. It was also kept very clean and the decor feels like a spa resort. We heard very little noise at night, only the waves crashing during high tide. The beach and chair area was perfect and situated right next to the palapa where we were served fantastic drinks by well seasoned bartenders who became our friends. The resort is low key, low density which is our favorite. However, you are very short walk from some livelier places to drink and eat. All activities can be arranged at the front desk with Hernan who was very helpful. We brought our own snorkel gear and spent hours swimming up and down the area between our resort and the resorts to the north and south. So much to see and we saw new creatures every day. The drinks were legit, breakfast was awesome, made to order eggs, omelets, waffles as well as a buffet of fresh fruit, juices, mexican dishes, meats, etc. Lunch and dinner had a full menu of options to choose from, burgers, mexican dishes, ceviche, chips and quac, chicken and steak, even vegan options. The only reason i didn't give 5 stars is because I am a bit of a food snob, the food was good but not great. However, from what i hear, it is on par with what most of the resorts serve. The meals got a little heavy for my taste, but there are great restaurants very close and downtown is a short 5-7 min taxi ($6). We will absolutely go back some day and see our new friends and enjoy the paradise at Playa Azul!
Hotel was clean, clerks were cordial, maids were friendly. Food was overall excellent. I suggest the bar drinks be upgraded a bit: the frozen pina colada was " thin" meaning it needed additional real coconut milk and pineapple juice instead of water. Highball drinks were excellent. TV needs additional English language channels.
Play Azul has the best location on the beach with a view that can not be surpassed, and the hotel gives you a sense of privacy. If you like snorkeling right from the beach, it's your place (peces ángel, trompeta, barracudas, morenas, meros, mantarrayas, etcétera). My grandson and I loved each minute. The staff is excelent, helpful, friendly.Food is excelent and the beach bar is a cozy little thing with the best view and nice bartenders.Wifi was so so.- Con: constant motor boats, pestilent, noisy jet skis for trashy and even dangerous tourists. It is not surprising that so much fauna has disappeared from that part of the sea. That's the thing that upset me.See you next year.
