Our OpinionA gem of a resort with great value. The Playa Azul is a modest little resort. Despite being a little smaller than most of the major resorts around the strip, there is no shortage of quality and luxury. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive, and there are a variety of activities to do within and outside of the resort grounds. The food is OK. It is recommended that travelers explore other options with regards to food. Overall, an amazing hotel for its value.
My 18 year old son and I spent 7 glorious nights at the Plaza Azul last week. The location is north of town and farther north of the cruise ships (which we found helps keep the whole vibe more slow and quiet). It is only a couple of minutes from the golf course and situated directly on what we felt is the best beach on the island. The service was superb on all levels. The housekeeping staff, guest services and wait staff were all very friendly and accommodating. They have a pretty good selection of alcohol and a really cool beach bar. The restaurant was also excellent. Most mornings they served a breakfast buffet, but also will make other items to order. Breakfast was always a delight and delicious. Lunch and dinner were also very good. We only had two dinners at the hotel, but both were very good. All the ceviche we tried were great and other menu items were also very good. There is a good lobster restaurant across the street (Fernando's Lobster House), but all other outings require a cab, car or scooter. We took taxis everywhere and they were very reasonable. A taxi into town was 95 pesos (a little over $5 US) and a ride to the piers south of town ran 180 pesos. The front desk had a book showing excursions on the island and called to make all arrangements for us. In summary, wow what a wonderful week! When we checked out, the front desk clerk said, "have a safe trip and we will see you next time!" It struck me as a nice way of confirming that yes, we will be back!!! I don't know how anyone who stays at the Playa Azul would ever want to stay elsewhere on the island when they return. Thanks so much to the staff for making our trip amazing!
This resort was amazing. We stayed in the jacuzzi suite with the ocean view and it's definitely worth the money. The room was comfortable and what a view with a balcony. The staff was very friendly and their breakfast was really good. It's a little far from the ferry so you have to rent a vehicle or take a taxi, but it's well worth it. We will stay here again when we return.
We went to Playa Azul wed June 7th to utilize the beach and snorkel. We were greeted by a waiter and he showed us to our table and chairs out on the beach. It was a quite day with only a couple other people on the beach. We ordered 5 waters and the waiter said he would watch our stuff while we were in the water. When we came back to shore he asked us multiple times if we wanted nachos or something else and we declined and said thank you but we just need the waters and we are fine. We snorkeled for a total of about an hour and then we decided to leave as the waves were a little much and there wasnt much to see. I dont get the big hoopla over this place. Anyways we went to pay for the 5 waters and he said its 500 peso. I asked for a reciept and he showed me and the receipt said 5 waters 500 peso. sheesh. What a ripoff!!!!!!!!!!! We will never go back to playa azul to stay or swim. You can go on trip advisor forums and see how many time I recommended this place to people to go for the day, never again.... Playa Azul you have con artists working your beach area.
We enjoyed our stay at Play Azul Golf, Scuba and Spa Resort and would consider staying there again when visiting Cozumel. We had an ocean front room in the older part of the resort, on the third (top) floor. There is no elevator on that side of the resort so plan accordingly. It wasn't a problem for us but less-mobile visitors will want to stay on the north side of the property in the newer building as it has an elevator (one can't venture from one building to the other except on the ground floor). Our suite was huge, and I wonder if this building was once condos that got converted? Inside the room door was a very large living room with two couches, television, and table in the front room. Because it was right off the hallway it didn't have any windows, so was dark and not very inviting. It was followed by a very large bathroom with walk-in shower and sink, with an additional sink outside the bathroom in the hallway, followed by a very large bedroom in the room that faced the ocean. We loved all the storage that the room provided...lots of shelving and drawers, and of course an in-room safe. Off the bedroom was a large patio facing the ocean. It was perfect for watching the spectacular sunsets every evening. Housekeeping left animal-shaped towel sculptures on the bed every day and it was always fun to come in to the room to see what they had created. We found the restaurant food acceptable. It wasn't amazing but it wasn't horrible either. We ate breakfast there every morning and lunch a few times during our stay. The waitstaff was always very friendly and helpful. One can get custom egg dishes as well as freshly made waffles, along with typical breakfast buffet food. The resort is on the north end of the island, and there are other resorts and restaurants within easy walking distance. Make sure to go to the key lime dessert place across the street (not the lobster place that sells key lime pie, but the actual pie outlet next door). Cab rides to town were easy to get, and almost always instantaneous. Cab fares were usually US $6 for a one-way trip (but some drivers quoted $9).
My husband and I stayed with another couple in the summer for a short 3 day trip and loved it. Food/Hotel:We ate the breakfast buffet every morning and dinner once at the restaurant. Every time was very tasty and fresh. The food has definitely improved since I was here previously. The room and hotel were clean and the staff helpful. The hotel and pool area overall was very quiet and cozy mostly due to being a golf resort. There wasn't a lot of people, yelling, or parties which is what I like so much about this place. Don't forget to visit the turtles at the main circular entrance around the tree. I like to bring them leftover fruit/lettuce from breakfast. :)Beach/Pool:The beach and pool are both decent sized and never packed. If you are a snorkeler, the beach is a tad rocky (like everywhere in Cozumel) so my advice is to walk to the next hotel or pier on the left to jump in the water. The current will float you back to Playa Azul. The snorkeling is pretty good here. I've seen stingrays, large starfish, sergeant majors, etc. With the good snorkeling, friendly staff, and quiet hotel, I'll definitely consider coming back to this location on my next trip! Thank you.
