La Isla Huatulco Hotel
- What's Included
A welcoming place with very helpful owners. They will bend over backwards to help in any way possible. The place is basic and clean. No hot water, but it was somewhat tepid which was fine for the season. Chose a room with a/c so our dog would be comfortable while we explored and played on the playas. Good location. Quiet except when something would set off their dogs, which never occurred late at night.
We spent only one night in this hotel, but only because we were headed to Oaxaca the next day. It is in a quiet part of town, very close to Playa Chahue, a very nice beach. 'Quiet' is a relative term in Mexico and Central America. I mean that it is outside of the main traffic zone, so car noise is at a minimum. Dogs and roosters are about the same as anywhere, although, as some reviewers have noted, the hotel has a few fairly yappy dogs that get pretty agitated when they see another dog. But truthfully I do not recall hearing them in the night. The rooms are basic, and ours was reasonably airy. We did not opt for air-conditioning (which would help with any noise issues I'm sure), but were fine with just a ceiling fan despite the 30 degree heat. Beds are somewhat hard, but the rooms are clean and well-kept.This hotel is for seasoned travelers, not those looking for luxury or something just like home. But if an affordable, clean and basic room is all you need, this is a good option.
The sign hanging in the courtyard correctly describes the hotel as basic, economic service. The good: The rooms are clean and comfortable. The location is good, near a beach and restaurants and a grocery store. Most everything is within walking distance or a cheap cab ride away. The wifi is good. The staff is kind and attentive. They have a nice reasonably priced breakfast service, the proceeds of which go to help spaying, neutering and caring for stray dogs (something very much needed in Mexico). The hotel is pet friendly and you will find a plethora of dogs on the premises (good - if you like dogs). The not so good: Hotel policy, only two towels per room, no exceptions - so if you want extra towels you will have to bring towels or buy them. No T.V. (but who wants to watch t.v. when you are near a beautiful beach). The Chahue bay/beach is across the park from the hotel. While the beach is pretty, it is not a good beach for swimming. There is a strong undertow and there are jellyfish (which stung me when I got in the water). We also had issues with hot water in the room and did not have hot water for 3 days of our 5 day stay.Cautionary Note: We had a troubling experience while staying at this hotel I do not blame the hotel per se and think that this could have happened at any hotel. Nevertheless, I feel that travelers to this region should be aware of this problem. While we were in our room, the hotel reception brought us their house phone stating that we had a telephone call. My husband answered the call which turned out to be a threatening call and an attempted extortion by someone claiming to be a member of a criminal organization. When my husband realized what was going on he hung up the phone. This experience was unsettling and unnerving to say the least and put a damper on our stay in Huatulco. We reported the incident to the management and they were very apologetic. Nevertheless, I think the Huatulco hotel association and individual hotels in the area should be aware of this practice which is potentially terrifying to guests, and should have a protocol in place to deal with this type of situation and be aware of blindly giving hotel guests the house telephone to receive calls.
We felt so welcome from the moment we walked in. The owners Reberto & Bianca were extremely helpful with directions, recommendations for beaches, restaurants & local tours to Cascadas Magicas. The hotel was very clean & the rooms spacious, with all the amenities. A lovely quiet beach, la playa Chahue is a 5 minute walk away, with the town centre 20 minutes walk. Can't recommend Hotel Plaza Delphinus more, an excellent budget hotel!
The design of this hotel is lovely and had a tranquil personality. I was using it as base for the area, and in that respect was well placed for drivers. The nearby beaches are beautiful, though not served by cafes and bars (as in Huatulco). There are a couple of hotels on the nearby beach, and I sat and had a drink there, but realised it was a transgression after I spotted everyone else was wearing wristbands...I was an interloper! As I said, the nearby beaches are lovely, but really feel owned by the big hotels there. The beach at Huaculto is walking distance at about 1.2Km, but you can't walk along the beach, so it's by road. Crucecita is near, but really a taxi or car drive.Everything was nice enough, but it did feel a little run down when I was there. I had to ask for towels, and the shower was OK, but not hot.I arrived in the early hours of the morning, and even though I had emailed this information at the time of booking, I had worrying 30 minutes upon arrival and was almost resigned to sleeping in the car - I didn't have to in the end.I can't really fault my stay here as it ticked all my boxes, it's just that I didn't really enjoy staying in it. WiFi was good and fast in my room.Check-in was worrisome. I had emailed about my late arrival when making the booking, but it took some time to raise reception. The guy didn't seem to want to let me in when I finally got his attention, but at least I didn't have to sleep in that car. The room wasn't ready with towels.
