Our Opinion

Like the Tesoro Ixtapa, this is an older building and probably more along the lines of a 3.5 star rather than a 4 star. The location is good, right in the hotel zone and the pool has a swim up bar with lots of activities going on. A combination of low-rise and a high rise building, the Holiday Inn Resort is a good choice for those who want to be in the hotel zone.

On Mexico's gold coast, this resort offers a beachfront location and a backdrop of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. There is also plenty to fill your itinerary, but if you want to venture out, you'll find snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, a crocodile habitat and shopping nearby.

Location: Right on El Palmar beach, 15 minute drive to Zihuatanejo, 25 minutes from the airport.

Great location, wonderful staff!

We enjoyed our stay at the Holiday Inn Ixtapa because not only was the location perfect and central to a variety of stores, bars and the biking/walking pathway system right across the street and all within walking distance, but the staff were very friendly and so helpful. Olivia and Keylin at the front desk always had a smile for us and helped with any translations we needed and in changing from a room with double beds into one with a king bed and balcony. It was perfect for us during the stay! The rooms are quite spacious and were always kept very clean. The only thing that we noticed was the musty smell inside and along some of the hallways from the humidity and all our clothes were a bit damp even when kept in the drawers or on hangers in the closet. Since I have allergies, I asked not to have the 'aroma' sprayed in the room that they use after room cleaning because that smell to me was actually worse. I bought some lavender essential oil spray at the local pharmacy and used that instead and it worked well. The bellmen always greeted us and were so welcoming. What we will remember for years to come and be grateful for is how the security staff looked after the baby turtles and eggs and in allowing us to help release them into the water when they hatched! Such an incredible experience!! Thank you Ceasar, Isreal and Jesus for doing this work! The food was OK and there was plenty of it so we never went hungry. But, it was very repetitive so we went across the street to try some other restaurants. The best evening meal by far was on Saturday night when they have the Mexican fiesta. It was so well done with lovely decorations and special attention to detail in every dish served, very authentic and tasty!! We really enjoyed the Mexican folk dancing show after the meal. In the morning it was great to have an omellette or an egg cooked on the griddle. Some mornings however, the line up waiting for this was very long and they could use two cooks at this station. One restauant is only open on weekends so there was no choice during the week days except to go to the only one that was open. Close to the beach is a snack bar which had good fresh fish, fries, burgers and chips and salsas. We ate there a few times. The buffet always had fresh fruit and salads and a variety of breads. There was not enough variety of chicken or other meat dishes. It seemed that a lot of pork was served and most meat dishes were in some kind of sauce which we really didn't care for. The property is kept very clean and is compact so not much walking is required between the rooms, the pool, restaurants or the beach. The road into the hotel has a cool rock design and plaza in front of the hotel. The vegetation is lovely and so were the palm trees. There are two adjoining pools and the children's side has a big bucket that fills with water and then splashes down on the kids slide to the squeals and delight of the little ones! There are plenty of activities on the board daily to keep the guests entertained and the activities staff were always full of energy and enthusiasm to get people involved whether in a dance class or a game of beach volleyball. We took part in several and had a lot of fun especially with zumba! There are also two complimentary and guided bike rides per day, one in the morning to Playa Linda and another in the afternoon to the marina. We enjoyed those as well except the bikes are not in the best condition and it was very hot and humid. Great exercise though! The beach was kept clean and was very nice to walk on especially in the evening because the sunsets on the ocean were simply amazing! There are plenty of chairs and palapas but on a weekend it was hard to find a chair in the shade because the hotel was full and so many more families were there for a weekend of fun. The waves were dangerous at times and the undertow strong. But, the water was clean and warm. The sand near the chairs was not that clean though due to guests smoking and putting their butts into the sand and then not cleaning them up. There are local peddlars walking on the beach selling everything from crafts, hats to t-shirts and sun wrap scarves. They were not aggressive or pushy and just walked past the chairs showing you what they had to sell.

Family Value along the Beach

Our family was desperate to get away from the winter and a quick escape to Mexico was our best option. We were looking for a direct flight, a short ride from an airport and a moderate price for this time of year. We settled on Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo after several of our friends recommended it as a safe and quaint place to visit. I also ended up selecting the Holiday Inn Resort Ixtapa as I know what to expect from the product and am a rewards member and was hoping that I could add more qualifying nights to my rewards status.Welcome and Lobby: Our bus dropped us off at the hotel and our bags were taken care of as we checked in. The lobby is big, airy and exactly what you expect from a tropical destination. It looks out onto the pool/beach area and we were excited as soon as we stepped into it. The check-in process was relatively quick, and as a rewards member, we were given a room upgrade from what we had booked, we now had a room with an ocean-view!Hotel Room: We were located on the 6th floor in a standard hotel room with two queen beds. It was bright and airy, the air conditioning worked well and was easy to use. The beds are really comfortable and one of the things I love about a Holiday Inn are the variety of pillow types. The room had international and North American plugs, which pleased all of us as there was a lot of technology to plug in, as you can imagine when travelling with teenage boys!Pool area: There are two pools available and we, for the most part, stayed at the quieter pool. The area is clean, lots of space to wander around without feeling like you're in people's way. The entertainment team does a good job with activities through the day. I took part in a Pilates class by the pool, and there were other activities like beach volleyball, Spanish lessons, aquagym, and other games to occupy guests. While drinks are not brought to your pool lounge chair, there are several locations nearby to get your thirst quenched. Tip: get your towels early and claim your chair as they fill up quickly, especially when shade is at a premium At the same time, don't put your towel there and be gone for hours on end, that's not fair either (as we found a few people did that)Beach area: The beach is long and we had several daytime and night walks. There are several hotels along the strip. Lots of chairs available, again shade at a premium. The water is warm, with waves sometimes stronger than others. The beach is a great spot to watch the parasailers and jet skiers. There are people flogging silver, henna tattoos, fishing trips etc but they aren't aggressive and accept a 'No Gracias'. We spent a lot of time at the beach. Tip: Do NOT wear your sunglasses or hats in the water, the undertow will take them. My son lost his sunglasses the first day and a pair of goggles on day 3.Food and restaurant options: The food was good, we ate a lot of fruit (papaya, pineapple) and fish. The kids had pancakes, eggs, chicken. It is an all-inclusive so the food, we found, was bland as it has to please a wide variety of palates, however, there were always options to add flavour through spices and a variety of salsas. Each night was a different themed buffet, and at breakfast each morning we would try and guess the evening's theme based on the decor of the restaurant. We spent most of our time eating at La Isla (breezy without AC- lovely) or at the main restaurant outside on the lower terrace. We did eat outside of the hotel one evening, at Frank's (across the street and also reviewed in TripAdvisor) which was a pleasant switch after four days of on-property eating. The one evening you don't want to miss out on is the Saturday night Mexican Fiesta in the gazebo area, yum!Evening Entertainment: Every night was a different show. Most shows ran from 8:30pm-10:00pm and were a great way to wind down the evening. Other services and amenities: Laundry: There is a laundry room onsite with one machine, it worked really well and you should bring your own travel detergent as the detergent sold in the gift shop would get me through 20 loads, and unless you're doing laundry every day, you don't need that much.Off-site activities: The entertainment team has a few off-site tours each day I recommend the bike tour (bici tour) to Playa Linda, this is approximately 2hrs easy riding through the ecological reserve to the crocodile sanctuary. A great way to spend a morning. The afternoon bike ride is to the Marina Ixtapa, so your choice. We also did a walk to the dolphinary, which is where they take care of dolphins and we saw a small show. There are paid shows available later in the day, this was a great mid-morning activity for something to do on a quieter day.Overall: Staff are very friendly and accommodating, the resort is clean although the hotel itself is an older property (1970's). If you're looking for shiny new, this is not it but, if you're looking for good value for money in a comfortable atmosphere then this is a good option.

Average Hotel in Ixtapa

I live 4 hours far from Ixtapa, so I visit this place almost every year from last 25 years. I have never repeat a hotel and I been tried several places from Zihuatanejo to MeliĆ”. From all of them, Palmar beach is my favorite because is open sea, about 1 mile long, the waves are strong but not so high, the water is warm and clean and the sand is so fine. This Hotel has a perfect location; close to Restaurants, Market is also very close. The room we had was kind of modern, two beds (even when we were just 2), and comfortable, room had ocean view with good size. It could have been cleaner, under beds hadn't been cleaned in a while. No in room Fridge, which was a problem. The Staff were good, Pleasant, and friendly. Entertainment Staff were Wonderful, and Bartenders also polite and friendly. One big problem was than one of the 2 elevators was out of order, we were in 9th floor and visit our room was a really big issue because we had to spend a lot of time waiting for the elevator. Another problem was that it seems the Hotel had not enough staff, so the personal in the restaurants were not able to handle the number of people that were in that time. In the buffet, several plates were empty and the waiters were always in a hurry and tired, even when they were trying to be nice. I think, this Hotel, as other I have visited, try to save money by low maintenance and hiring few personal. The food and beverage service were average, nothing else. I think I will still searching a better option to stay in that beach.

We got SICK from resort food

We stayed at the resort Feb 1 to 8, 2018. Check in was smooth. We got a lovely room with a wonderful view. The room and the overall resort were very clean and well kept. The staff were freindly and the drinks were excellent. What was missing in all of this is the food quality...extremely poor. I read previous comments on the abundance of Mexican food and I was really looking forward to it, but 90% of it is not the Mexican food I recognized. Onions, hot and bell peppers, cactus bits and all manner of sauces that ran the gamut from hot to blistering hot. Both of us got the trots and some vomiting. It really spoiled our time. How can you do anything if you are sitting on a toilet seat! Overall a very disappointing holiday. We should have seen red flags when the hotel put signs by the salad and fruit trays saying "hotel not responsible for consumption of raw food"!

Just returned from a beautiful week at the Holiday Inn Ixtapa. It was so great to see all of the improvements that this resort has taken on in only a year. The rooms were all remodeled and especially the bathrooms and showers updated replaced with new sinks, glass shower doors, flooring repairs all nicely done. The new main pool was bigger, cleaner, and the small children very much appreciate the slide and water bucket. Activities were back on track this year and all the entertainment group went out of their way to make sure everyone was having fun. New stuff to do this year too. Food was good and plentiful, and the Fiesta night on Sat. was a big hit as normal. The snack bar was good, we were wishing the restaurant overlooking the ocean was open a few more mornings for breakfast but the staff made either place welcoming. Pool bar was great as always and the guys did an awesome job! Sports bar was fun as well. The rooms were well kept every day. Our rooms were pretty much all available when we got there and we arrived early in the day so that was a plus as well. Weekends were a little busier as usual but we got to know new families thru kids and activities which made it even more fun. Sadly we're back in the cold now but will be back next year for another adventure. The only person we really missed was Jorge as he was the one who got us coming back year after year to this resort. We were not real happy with the direction it was going but Jorge always took care of ANY issues we had and saw we were taken care of so we returned on his word and I'm so glad we listened to him and trusted him. We really missed seeing you Jorge thank you so much for everything! Thank you Holiday Inn for a great vacation! THE DAY FAMILY
