Our Opinion
In a great location in the Golden Zone, the Playa Mazatlan has long been a favorite of Canadians. You can opt for the all inclusive option or just go hotel only as there are many restaurants in the area. Right next to the popular Joe's Oyster Bar.

A Mazatlan favorite! This resort offers loads of atmosphere and superb service. The hotel's 418 rooms are nestled among lush, colourful gardens and towering palm trees. Enjoy the great stretch of beach or relax poolside at one of 3 different pools. Enjoy the nearby nightlife at the various clubs and bars or partake in the Playa Mazatlan's own 'Fiesta Mexicana'!

Location: Beachfront, 10 min to downtown Mazatlan, 30 min from the airport.

Loved this Place

This is a great hotel - we paid extra for the ocean view room in the north tower and were not disappointed. There's a nice selection of pools - there's one for children (with a pirate theme), a main pool, then a selection of cold pools built into an interesting cave configuration. The food was good. In the buffet, don't miss out on the lady who makes quesadillas and tacos at breakfast and lunch. Her station is at the north side of the buffet near the salads and fruit and fussball (not near the 'international cuisine' at the main bar). The Italian restaurant was good; the Mexican restaurant was a bit greasy (everything we ordered was fried). You have to book the Italian restaurant with the concierge at the reception during the morning. The ceviche snack bar is not to be missed - just excellent. The snack bar near the main pool is worth missing - our nachos included a cheese 'product', rather than actual cheese. Service was really excellent and the staff seemed so friendly. We placed the 'clean room' sign on our door when we headed out in the mornings and always found our room consistently clean by lunchtime. The location can't be beat - about 10 minutes walk south on the beach (then cut through the car park) to the Malecon. Stroll on a weekend evening to really enjoy the Mazatlan experience. It's also a very pleasant walk to the old town along the Malecon; it takes about an hour (leave early before the heat). The cathedral and market are particularly worth a visit. Just a couple of minor drawbacks - the wifi in our room didn't really work, but worked well in common areas. The bands on the beach are a little out of control at the moment. It's a nice Mexican tradition to rent a band to play a few songs, but we sometimes found competing bands outside our balcony - some using ampliphers to ensure they were the loudest on the beach! Fortunately, the noise all ended around sunset. We'll be back! Great place to bring the family.

Playa Mazatlan

We came here for one week at spring break. The hotel is very clean and the staff cannot do enough for you. We went on the all inclusive since we came with our kids we though this would be the easiest.Food is ok. Breakfast is buffet no other choice by day 5 you get tired of it as it's the same every day!Lunch again buffet or snack bar Also there is a cervichy bar. We only ate once at the snack bar it's not good! Greasy food and the cheese sauce for nachos is cold. We weren't able to get lunch on the beach due to being on the all inclusive plan this I didn't like.Dinner was buffet or al a carte the Italian was ok.It's in a good location but there's really nothing to do at night at the hotel. All shows are in Spanish so we didn't bother going to any of those.Theres a band at night in the buffet area but again only in Spanish .No pool activities except bingo.I would stay here again just not on the all inclusive plan.I would recommend this hotels for families with small kids but if you are looking for a hotel with night life this is not the place.

Excellent Vacation!

This was our 2nd stay at Playa Mazatlan. We stayed in the Villa Hermosa room which has a wrap around balcony with amazing views, highly recommend. We did not do all inclusive but ordered from the menu at La Terraza many times and everything was very good. Great beach, very clean common areas. Employees are exceptional! For some reason I could rarely get an internet connection. More English T.V. channels would be great if you are under the weather or really sunburned and need a break in the room. Can I recommend pillow top mattress for the boutique rooms??? Other than those minor things we love this resort and will return yearly! The zip line, rock climbing wall, and swim up bar are not in operation.

Repeat Visitors

We have been to Hotel Playa Mazatlan at least 10 times. It is a lovely resort in a fantastic location. The room (450) was wonderful. Our past visits have been very relaxing and enjoyable. This year we notice a significant change -- adding all-inclusive option and welcoming cruise ship visitors with a voucher program has degraded the overall experience for us as regular and recurrent guests. The beach service was prompt and attentive in the past. Our recent visit noted significant delays in service and lesser food quality due to the increased number of all-inclusive and cruise ship guests. The noise level at the beach and inside the hotel is excessive at nearly all hours of the day. Children were running around and screaming in the hallways at 3am on a Monday night! The adult only areas were not enforced. This year was our first disappointing visit to Hotel Playa -- we will look forward to visiting other locations in Mexico in the future.

It's okay - Stayed for a week March 2017

I researched a lot before picking an affordable resort that was all-inclusive in Mazatlan. Hotel Playa Mazatlan had majority good reviews and most reviews mentioned the noise and music coming from Joe's Oyster Bar so we requested the north tower as others have mentioned. But we agree with Tara P with her review. No matter where you stayed, you are going to get noise of some kind. We had a great view from our balcony as we can still see a bit of the ocean and beach. The north end had a lot of construction going on including jack hammers and they start around 7:30 am. But most of the noise was from the very thin walls and awkward placement of internal windows where you can hear banging of doors (even if you tried to close bathroom door slowly - wood on wood), brass marching band playing on the beach, staff (although they were wonderful) talking loudly within hallways and guest (esp the kids) screaming. We found that the kids from Mexican families vacationing there did not sleep until 11pm so if you want some quiet, you'll have to aim to sleep after 11pm.As Tara P mentioned, the guests were mostly Mexican families that come here on weekends. We landed on a weekend where 90% were Mexican guests and it reflects especially the food choices and presentations/entertainment. The buffet didn't have any variety daily. The Italian Restaurant was by far the best meals we've had and you will also notice that their guests were out of country guests as well. The Mexican was more authentic than the buffet and was enjoyable. The snack bar with the ceviche was delicious. And if you can, there is an guy selling fresh oysters on the beach. My boyfriend couldn't get enough of them.Getting the negatives out of the way, the location of this resort is prime. It has the best beach and plenty of lounge chairs. If you walk on the beach, you will notice that the developers did a great job incorporating the beach area compared to other resorts. The staff are wonderful and some speak minimal English. The concierge and front desk were super helpful and have a good grasp of English. The Italian restaurant staff were amazing with Jesus (manager) getting us in without reservation on our second day (not knowing anything). But they make reservation starting from that morning until 3pm. You cannot reserve earlier than that day. You can get new beach towels daily as long as you return the other ones before 5pm. The area around the hotel is safe. We walked outside the front gates towards the malecone a few times at different times of day. There's so many restaurants and stores outside the hotel. We got tired of the buffet there and decided to go the The Shrimp Factory nearby as there was lack of seafood at this resort and we were craving it. We highly recommend not to do the all-inclusive if you end up staying here (unless you drink a lot) with the restaurants nearby and also in the evenings you will see food carts including hot dog stands. Downtown is easy to get to by bus with a short walk to the main street/bus stop. It takes about 15 minutes drive. You can walk it, we did a half walk but it may take a couple of hours. It is a nice walk though. You get to see a lot this way and interact with the locals as well.Overall, it's not the best resort we have been to but it's okay. We like our sleep and lack there of was challenging to us but we stayed positive as best we could ... perhaps we were spoiled on our first all-inclusive trip? In the end, it depends on what you want and expect with the amount of $$ spent. PS... we ended up having a safe in our room and free internet where you can get a good signal. I know that it may not say that in the website or other places and unsure if the safe was us getting lucky. There are locker-ish safes outside by the front desk.I hope this review helps you in some way.
