Royal Villas Resort

We stayed at Royal Villas for 7 days with the all inclusive package through Sunwing. Pros:- nice view of sunset over the ocean- good sized rooms- mini fridge, drip coffee maker, microwave, dishes/pots/cutlery, cooktop, iron, ironing board in the room- wifi speed is good when you are connected (it boots you off every few minutes)- servers are all very friendly- pool is big and heated- Mexican food is pretty good - nice big shower but some rooms took about 10 minutes to warm up- uncomfortable beds- a couple English tv channels- location a short walk from the shops along what is known as the golden zoneCons:- the good service comes to a halt on the day you leave. Our flight home departed at 7:15pm and our shuttle wasn't scheduled to pick us up until 3:45pm. They told us the all inclusive package ended at 11am. On our arrival day we didn't get to the hotel until 9pm. We explained this to the desk staff and insisted our all inclusive should be all included until we leave especially considering we haven't been here for 7 full days. I called our sunwing contact who agreed with us and spoke to the desk staff. After time spent arguing they decided to let us have the all inclusive until 2pm... it was better than nothing but we were still shocked and not happy. Aside from the reservation manager who was professional and at least a little bit helpful, the desk staff were suddenly very rude and defensive on our last day- food service is slow - only 1 restaurant and 1 bar - the menu gets boring fast- lots of grease and salt on everything including veggies which were sparse- it was super difficult to get bottled water - on 2 occasions the staff said they needed to go to the store to buy some more - rooms smell musty and are damp/ humid/ mouldy- not the resorts fault but it is almost always cool and windy- no hot tub (there is a small hot tub like people have in their back yards but it wasn't ever opened)- towels are old and scratchy - shampoo and soap is awful - bring your own- not much worth doing in the area - we saw the cliff divers, malecon, old city square and all were Ok but not worth coming here for- street side rooms are super noisy and you can hear anytime a chair is moved on the floor above Overall we had a decent trip. We came for a traditional Mexican wedding and it was really really nice! Bottom line: if you are just looking for a vacation destination, I would look elsewhere. If you are coming to Mazatlan for a specific reason I would consider looking at other accommodations.
The staff at this property make it worth the stay. The rooms are clean, large, and ours with a partial ocean view was delightful. For those coming in from the Pacific Northwest, you may be surprised that Seattle's KOMO (ABC) is one of the primary English stations. The water in the pool was warm and clean and the service there was just as good. The guacamole is some of the best I've had and all of the food and beverages we enjoyed were superior.Typically, this kind of property would have scored better with us but there were a few issues. At least half of the time we had the TV on, it would automatically shift to a view of movies we could buy. It said on the screen "push exit to return" but there was no exit button nor was there any button that would let us watch TV. The air conditioning was VERY noisy -- if you like to sleep in a quiet room, fuggedaboutit. Finally, the windows in the skylights and adjacent to the view elevator were beyond filthy which completely denigrated the look of the place. Water pressure in the shower was poor and literally three Kleenex tissues could clog the toilet.Other than that, good stay and we would surely stay here again.
First the positives - resort staff are fantastic, special mention to Jose Luis and Brenda.Internet is free and very good.We had a 1 bedroom suite for 2 weeks. The furniture is old and dated, Sinks have cracks in them. The walls are very thin and you can hear every sound in the adjoining rooms, even the ping of the microwave. It is kept spotless by the staff. We were also stuck in an mandatory all inclusive plan which was overpriced. There is plenty of choices. When Brenda and Jose learned that my husband required gluten free, they went out of their way to provide alternatives. Pool area is tight and there are so many kids on the weekends throwing balls around that it is not pleasant. They allow smoking everywhere except in the main dining room. This is not nice at the pool when people think it's ok to get in the pool with a cigarette.
We loved this place, it was the first time we stayed and it was great. The suite was huge with a stove top, large fridge and other small appliances. Two balconies, two bathrooms. Unbelievable. The only disadvantage is you have to pay for activities like pool, air hockey, ping pong.
Beautiful Hotel with Exceptional Service!! We've been staying here since 2001 and look forward to going back year after year!! The location is Perfect for shopping site seeing and just plain old relaxing!!!
