Our Opinion

A spectacular property located in a secluded area south of Puerto Vallarta. Being awarded the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award speaks for itself. The family and couple oriented Barcelo Puerto Vallarta offers excellent restaurants, great service and a nice pool area. When the tide is in there is no beach. A nice quiet, alternative location from the popular Riviera Nayarit and Hotel Zone. Formerly the Barcelo La Jolla de Mismaloya.


This superior all suite hotel sits on Mismaloya Bay amidst a backdrop of tropical mountain rainforests. On a small secluded beach, the Barcelo Puerto Vallarta is an elegant, all-inclusive Mexican-style resort. It offers 316 comfortable suites with excellent service, leisure, history, beautiful scenery, exuberant flora and privacy. Relax on your vacation and pamper yourself in the hotel spa, catch some rays at one of the hotel pools or take time out to practice your favourite water sport. Hotel Barcelo Puerto Vallarta was awarded the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award in 2009.

Location: Nested between the Pacific Ocean and it's own tranquil secluded beach, 20 minutes from downtown Puerto Vallarta and 35 minutes from the airport.

Wanted to LOVE it!

This is a beautiful and much more authentically Mexican resort than those closer to the airport. The setting is gorgeous and the family rooms with two bedrooms and bathrooms are a huge plus for this resort. I soooooo wanted to love this place, but, there are a few really big problems. The food was just not what I expected. We are from the Midwest and not picky eaters at all, but really struggled to find something that looked appetizing. Three of the four of us ended up with varying degrees of the stomach issues that ranged from an inconvenience to dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea. I read about the bugs and was ready, but blown away by what I witnessed on the legs of some of the guests. They looked awful on almost everyone and impossible to avoid if you left the room. The view from each room to the pool area is great during the day, but very loud at night. The music never stopped and the sound was trapped in the design of the buildings. The staff were all working really hard and very helpful but clearly understaffed for spring break crowds. I really appreciated the setting and the people, but would probably not go back to this resort without some attention to these problems. This makes me sad because wth a few changes this really could be the hidden jem of PV!

Not a 4 Star

Unfortunately this was not a great trip for my family and friends...17 of us travelled from Calgary and after day 2 (Mar 11th) people started becoming very ill with vomiting, diarreah, chills, dizziness, headaches, body aches, etc.. 10 of 17 of us had whatever it was and the only common denominator was the buffet and common areas. We also heard from many other guests that theirs groups were ill too. The resort staff ask you to use hand sanitizer when you enter the buffet and there are hand sanitizers all over the property. But it is a resort and there will be guests who don't wash their hands (so gross and we witnessed this) and likely staff who might feel sick and still come to work. Sadly the hand sanitizer will not protect you 100%. It's a risk. There were also the bugs. The general consensus is these are from no-see-ums. I found that hand sanitizer helps numb them. The staff were excellent from the front desk to the pool service to the restaurants and the maids. Staff will come around offering you fruit and veggie cups, facials (very good), sunglass cleaning, bug spray later in the day, etc. It's a nice added touch.The food in the buffet is average. It's really hard to comment fairly since after being so sick I was not wanting to eat there. The restaurants are the way to go. They have excellent food.For $65 CAD extra a night we upgraded to a family suite with an additional room with 2 single beds, an additional bathroom, free wifi and a dinner reservation each night (otherwise we only got 5 reservations for 10 nights). They said the wifi would only work from the balcony. It didn't in room 2517. The wifi only worked down in the common areas and is mediocre signal wise.At first I thought this resort was very clean but after getting so sick I starting to see things in a different light. Our room always had fresh clean linens and was cleaned daily however there was built up dust on alarm clocks, doors, and lamps. The grout in the bathrooms had mold, our light was broken and the room showed it's age. The rooms had a basic clean but they need to improve on their maintenance and deep cleaning. I never once saw the pool deck or loungers washed down which was disappointing. After a day of people drinking (spilling) and eating out there with sand being trekked up from the beach I would expect this area cleaned... at least once! I noticed fruit was dropped by the poolside and was there for many days. Iguanas also sometimes poop on the pool deck and the staff clean it up but only with a napkin. Washing the pool deck daily would reduce illness from spreading and the bugs from staying - they are for sure not doing this.If you want a massage go to the far end of the beach. It's $25 CAD for one hour and amazing. You can't be shy. It's not very private but totally worth it. Overall this hotel needs to be updated, maintained better, and cleaner. It is not a 4 star in my opinion and does not live up to the other Barceló Resorts I have been very happy with in the past.

Not what we hoped for! 3/13/2017 - 03/19/2017

My first impression should have been a good indicator of this trip. We arrived to our room and I was very disappointed in the cleanliness (or lack there of.) While the rest of the hotel seems to be cleaned very thoroughly, our room definitely was not. Our entire family became extremely sick on the 3rd day. I went to the front desk to ask if we could have all of our bedding changed since all 5 members of our family had been sick . They said sure and called up to the maids. We returned to our room later to find that they had just flipped all of our bedding around. I am positive of this because we had vomit on one of our blankets and it was still there, just hidden. They did come back and changed it all while we were in the room. When you're sick on vacation and spending far too much time laying in bed, this should've been addressed with far more care. The food was not great. Just about what everyone says on here is correct. The buffet is not good and actually makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it. We ate at the Italian restaurant and the steak and seafood restaurant and they were both good. We definitely did not get our moneys worth as we barely ate or drank anything besides bottled water after day 3. Our family will not be returning to this resort and are disappointed in our first ever trip to Mexico. :(

Lots of sickness

9 of us stayed at this Barcelo property in Puerto Vallarta. All of us got sick, some worse than others. I've read reviews about this and it seems like people have been getting sick at this property for years. My husband is is physically fit was in our room for almost 4 days from sickness. He couldn't eat the food because it would start his stomach turning everytime. He lived on saltine crackers and the snacks we brought from home. My 17 year old daughter threw up the 2nd night we were there and everyone else either had fevers and chills or throwing up and the runs. I also encountered many travelers at this resort that all we're talking about how they all were sick too. Not a fun vacation. I would recommend staying somewhere else. We stayed in Cancun and not one of us got sick then. We are generally a healthy group but this Barcelo Property got us.

A few things could be improved

Overall, we love this place. It's our first time and we heard the property was "average". Not so. The standard rooms are well appointed. The deluxe rooms are just that.The staff is very friendly. The food up to this point has been very good (maybe a little morespicy) and although about 10 miles south of DT Puerto Vallarta, it doesn't feel secluded.Our favorite server so far has been Ramon Padilla at the Capri restaurant. He went beyond the call of duty to help answer a few questions and insisted we have a Baileys after dinner.One note for Barcelo: the service around the pool area is SLOW. Took two hours one day for some one to ask if we wanted a drink and 5 the next. You can easily walk to the bar or refreshment area yourself but it seems like it's a miss
