Our Opinion

A spectacular property located in a secluded area south of Puerto Vallarta. Being awarded the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award speaks for itself. The family and couple oriented Barcelo Puerto Vallarta offers excellent restaurants, great service and a nice pool area. When the tide is in there is no beach. A nice quiet, alternative location from the popular Riviera Nayarit and Hotel Zone. Formerly the Barcelo La Jolla de Mismaloya.

Overview

This superior all suite hotel sits on Mismaloya Bay amidst a backdrop of tropical mountain rainforests. On a small secluded beach, the Barcelo Puerto Vallarta is an elegant, all-inclusive Mexican-style resort. Relax on your vacation and pamper yourself in the hotel spa, catch some rays at one of the hotel pools or take time out to practice your favourite water sport. February Getaway

The overall Resort is a 4 out of 5. I am being very picky here. I expected more for the food. The rest of the resort is great. Rooms are lovely and the pool is great. I read you do not get a lot of sun around the pool...well you do have to switch sides of the pool come afternoon. Which isn't a huge deal. There is always sun some where around one of the poolsI love a nice beach and you will not spend any time on this beach. So if you are looking for a nice beach to relax on and go for a long walk..again this isn't the resort. The resort is tucked away in what feels like the jungle with the mountain's and trees which is beautiful but not a good beach.I expected a lot of selection of Seafood. Did not deliver. The one night there was a Seafood buffet we had the Sushi restaurant booked. DO NOT go to the Sushi Restaurant. Not good at all!! So I was very disappointed in the Seafood. I have stayed at RIU's and the Seafood selection is always there. Overall the staff is very friendly the rooms and resort were enjoyable. The WIFI is not free by the way!! Also bring bug spray!! I cannot stress this enough. I saw people with huge bug bites on my second day..then I noticed them on myself. You don't even feel them bite. Its like fleas.

Peaceful Relaxation

This was our 2nd stay here, first time was 5 years ago. I have no complaints whatsoever as it is exactly what we were looking for. Seclusion, outside of the hustle and bustle, quiet and small. The resort is very clean and well maintained, and the staff are exceptional. David Rodriguez was a delight as a waiter in the Los Arcos alacarte, making subtle changes and suggestions to our dinners. He is attentive and responsive to every need, noticing right away when you needed something. Oscar Martinez was another attentive staffer who served drinks and was always happy and chatty, it got to the point where we were asking to be seated where he was working. All of the staff at the resort are friendly and smiling. Food was very good, no complaints at all. Fresh and tasty all the time. If you are looking for a huge beach that you can walk for miles, this isn't it...it is a smaller beach, but room to expand next to the resort where there are a couple of restaurants with beachfront service at very reasonable prices. The fishermen and panga drivers moor their small boats in the bay in front of the hotel and I was delighted to watch them and their families and a few beach dogs as they live life right next to the hotel, bringing their boats in and out of the river, seeing the catch of the day, helping each other out in rough waters as the waves can make loading and unloading us tourists an interesting experience! The only suggestion I have is plan to use some bug spray - bring it or buy it in their gift shop. The mosquitoes and sand fleas were merciless...not sure if this is a year round thing, but both times we have been there, they were biting.

Not really all inclusive - mediocre food

A couple months ago, my boyfriend and I went to the Kore Tulum All Inclusive Resort in Tulum. We had such an amazing experience so we wanted to do an all inclusive again but this time in Puerto Vallarta. My room rate: $266USD/night. One of the reasons I booked this hotel is because there was a special offer of a $500 resort credit! Awesome. Needless to say, we arrived the day after Valentine's Day and the check in was smooth. I was disappointed to learn that wifi and room service was not included. And the $500 resort credit was bogus - definitely false advertisement. It's actually a discount (15-25%) off when shopping at the gift shop or getting a massage. Honestly - this was the deciding factor for booking this hotel and now I totally regret it. False AdvertisingThey also advertise "Free Wifi" which they only offer to premium members only. Very misleading. Also, if you don't want to do buffet, you have to make reservations in advance for the Spanish, Italian, or Japanese restaurant. We didn't arrive to the hotel until 8pm so the buffet was our only choice. We are huge foodies and found the food here to be pretty mediocre. Besides their house white and red wines, if you wanted something else there was an extra charge. As far as the fancier restaurants that you have to make a reservation for- they don't allow you to eat at the other restaurant every night or the duration of your stay. For example, we were staying a total of 4 nights and we got two nights of food vouchers unless you're a "premium member" then you can go as often as you would like. They only take reservations from 9-5. You can't just call and make a reservation. You have to physically go down to the concierge and present your meal vouchers. Again - not really all inclusive and they failed to mention this. In the mornings, there's a man spraying pesticides or whatever chemicals around the resort. I had no idea and inhaled it on accident and felt as if my body has just been poisoned. Room: large and spacious. Love the layout of the bathroom and the balcony is quite large. At the foot of the bed is the pretty foot bench with a bunch of white mysterious stains. Nasty. Two robes are provided but no slippers. When you use the air conditioning- it's super loud. The ceiling fan was off balance so it made a constant freaking noise. My biggest complaint is the walls are so thin. The first night here, there was a lady walking around in her heels for hours and I could not sleep. I had to call security to go up there to tell her to quiet down and she finally did around 1:30 am. Then at 7:30 am, she's back at it again. I can hear everything - from moving the furniture to the shower and the heels. Ugh! Who wears heels and just walks around all night? We ended up switching to a new room in tower 1. Food:Buffet - tons of options but very mediocreSnack bar - disappointingOrdered:Ceviche Vallarta - instead of the lime cooking the fish, you get cooked shredded fish that is super dry and a piece of tostadaAvocado with tuna salad - alright. Nothing special because it's tuna from the can. Flautas - lacking flavorSteak sandwich - decentShrimp burrito - out of everything ordered- this was my favorite. The cheese is the star in this plate. They also have a taco stand and I recommend the al-pastor tacos. The al-pastor is slow roasting and you have many different topping options. Margarita on the rocks - too much simple syrup. I exchanged it for a house white wine and the bartender poured it into a plastic cup. I looked inside of my cup and there was chunks of salt in my cup. I'm guessing they didn't wash the cups properly. Piña coladas and mojitos are decent. If you order tequila shots, they are super tiny. Dirty Monkey drink - try this!!Fancy restating 1:Don Quixote (Spanish)Ensalada de pulpo - not what I was expecting at all. I was hoping for a salad - not two pieces of potato with octopus on top. Potato had no flavor; octopus chewy. The only good thing about this dish is the aioli. Tapas. Spanish tortilla - only good with the aioli. The other type of included imitation crab. One of the tapas had imitation crab and one small piece of shrimp cut into 3 pieces to fill the bread. Chorizo was alright This plate is definitely not "Spanish Tapas."For seconds - I ordered the chicken with saffron sauce. Finally! Something I really enjoyed while staying here at Barcelo. Chicken was tender and not dry and the saffron sauce is very strong. Lamb lollipops - also cooked at medium rare perfection and very flavorful. Fancy Restaurant 2:Arcos (Steak)We woke up late and was 20 minutes late to our reservations and they were very accommodating and sat us anyways even though they said they can only hold tables for 15 minutes. The complimentary cheese bread and the herb butter was probably my favorite thing tonight. For appetizers, we order the assortment of empanadas. They were very dry and and not enough flavor, more bread than meat. In the menu it says the sauces word chimichurri and an avocado sauce. That definitely was not the case. One tasted like mayonnaise and,the other one tasted like thousand Island dressing, and the last want to use it like a tangy ranch dressing. For entrées we got the ribeye medium rare and the surf and turf. Ribeye - dry and barely any fat. I was so disappointed because I was really looking forward to this dish. Definitely tasted like the cheapest cut of meat ever offered. Surf and turf- i'm used to getting a piece of steak and a lobster tail. Instead of a lobster tail they provide two pieces of shrimp which were overcooked. The sirloin was cooked to medium where it was very good. For dessert - tres leches cake - no wow factor. I ended up getting a facial and was very relaxing and nice and a good price! $1065 Pesos for their best facial so it's worth it Checkout process: We departed on a Sunday. There are long lines but there's no way around it because they have to cut off your wristband and turn it in. Then they gave you a check out ticket in which you have to present with your departure from the resort. That concludes my stay here. I know the managment team tends to respond to every review with some generic answer. Don't bother unless you're going to change some things on the website i.e free wifi, the bogus $500 resort credit, and the limitations of the restaurants. Thanks!

Pool bar staff

The staff at the pool bar are extremely friendly and helpful. Edgar was a great bartender, he went above and beyond what was expected. He always had a smile on his face and was very outgoing. Thanks Edgar the the fun week at the pool bar.
