We just returned from a 5 night trip to Now Amber/Secrets resort. As we drove up to the property, a private security gate was closed. After waiting about 10 minutes, our driver informed us the resort only lets only 1 bus at a time in the resort due to limited space. Our check-in was a good experience. I was impressed with the speed of the check-in. We had a preferred suite. Our travel agent informed the resort that we wanted a higher floor room but we were put on the 2nd floor. Our room overlooked the pool and we did not have a view of the ocean. When we entered the room, the smell of mildew was very strong. I asked the bellman if all the rooms had this odor and he offered us a dehumidifier. Unfortunately, this did not help the smell and my spouse and I both woke up with headaches. After I went to the front desk, they offered to move us to Secrets. They said they did not have any room in the preferred of Secrets but the 13th floor suite we were given was beautiful and I really think the height helped the air circulate better.Checkout was very quick and painless! Only other comment is that housekeeping took until 5 pm to clean the room every day.
I had the pleasure of staying at the Now Amber for 7 weeks and enjoyed every minute of my stay. I holiday every year for between 6-8 weeks and usually try somewhere new each year, this year I returned to the Now Amber after a great stay last year. The rooms in the hotel are very large and comfortable with all the amenities you need, wifi, coffee maker, iron, AC etc. The only negative point is the musty smell but after a few days you get used to it. The view from my room on the 9th floor was beautiful and the balcony was in the sun from 1pm - 6.30pm. The food in the hotel is plentiful and good and the service in the restaurants is exceptional. I ate in the buffet more than the speciality restaurants as I loved the shrimp and fish they cook there. The French restaurant was my least favourite, however I spoke to many people who loved it. The room service is good and efficient, I used it many times in my 7 weeks. The beach isn't the best beach I have been to and the sea wasn't always swimmable, so keep this in mind when choosing your destination. I loved swimming in the sea though and did so many times. The water sports and entertainment team work hard to make sure you have a good time. You can go paddle boarding, kayaking and on the catamaran every day at no addition charge. I went out on the paddle board on numerous days with the incredibly patient and kind Jaime who also taught me to swim! Alondra, Jaime and Eziquiel from the entertainment staff all did a wonderful job at keeping us entertained and happy, they do an excellent job. The security at the hotel is very good, you need to sign in and out of the hotel. The security guy on the beach, Emilio, does an excellent job of keeping the beach vendors at bay. This is the first time that I have returned to a resort twice and it is very likely that I will return again as, for me, it ticks all the boxes. The hotel is beautiful, the service is excellent and the location is perfect. If you are thinking of booking this hotel I recommend that you contact Cesar (e-concierge) on Facebook as he is extremely helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to family and friends and look forward to returning again.
I went to surprise my parents who were staying at the adult only side of the hotel (Secrets) and that was successful but as for the hotel experience on our side (Now Amber), I didn't find it that great for the price that I paid. The ala carte restaurants were okay. I think the best one was the Japanese grill (adults only). We were at our lunch buffet and ordered ice cream. It took over 20 minutes and it was melted when it arrived. I guess that they had to go to the restaurant at the beach area to get it. Really, at a family resort and they don't have ice cream at each restaurant? Maybe a self-serve machine for lunch time. Also, we are in Mexico and especially at the Mexican buffet night and there was no salsa or guacamole to be found. During the day we had to ask for it each time. There were lots of uneven ground and a pier plank area at the front entrance to take great sunset photos, but also something to trip up (as I did the first night). The balconies were tiny. There wasn't any place to hang your wet bathing suits. They had a clothes line in the shower area but ours was broken. The toilet stall area was so tiny that I had to lean against the wall and step over the toilet to get out of the stall (in our room). The one good thing was the safe was at eye level, not on the floor level. The maid/housekeeping came 4 out of 7 days after 4:30 pm. We were already back in the room to get ready and now they were coming to clean our room, with us there. Then the turn down service maid was coming at 6 pm and we hadn't left the room yet for dinner. There wasn't any social gathering place as there is only one bar in each lobby with chair and tables just for your group of family/friends, therefore, we just sat at the bar (that only had 6 chairs). I went to a fruit carving demonstration (from the entertainment staff) which was good, but then I never saw any carved fruit displayed in the restaurants. The buffet wasn't very good for the dinners at either hotel. They had 2 people walking around with a hawk to scare the pigeons and other birds away but they just moved to another area or flew past the hawks...not very productive.
We loved our stay over spring break. Our room was wonderful and all the staff were very nice and cheerful. We stayed on the 12 th floor and the view was breath taking! The food was spectacular and we loved having a different experience at the Japanese, French, Italian and seafood restaurants. We ran out of time to try the authentic Mexican. We will have to go back and try it!
I was a little nervous after reading a few reviews and never going to Puerto Vallarta. Our room was very clean and ideally located. We were in the preferred building as I booked through West Jet Vacations. Although it doesn't matter much, it was really nice to have the amenities in that building and it was close to the pool. The drinks are what you would expect at an all inclusive but you can buy nice wine if you prefer it. The restaurants were very good. We enjoyed the Italian restaurant Capers (the sommelier is excellent and our favourite waiter was Sergio) and the Castaways restaurant for lunch. My kids ate at Carnival whenever they could, they loved all the choices. I wasn't too clear on the tipping but you should tip the staff at the bar and restaurants. They are lovely and so many people demand great service but don't give a tip after being taken care of all day. The spirit team around the hotel that lead some games and fitness are just great. They are fun and energetic and the activities are only for an hour or so and varied so it doesn't get too irritating. It is very clean there. Because Mexico is humid, the rooms can have a bit of a moist smell but you can air it out and we brought essential oils and our yoga spray. We didn't really need it but I was glad we did because it just made the room fresher. Honestly, the staff are so kind that it relaxes you. My kids didn't want to leave the resort. It is right on the beach which is not as nice as the Mayan Rivera but it's pretty nice - you don't feel like you wish you were elsewhere. Down at the 'local' end of the beach it is sandy right into the water and that is where you want to swim. It has small rocks at the water at Now Amber. One thing I was grateful for was a place right next to the hotel called Healing Hands. It offered massages for $20.00 - $25.00 US and they were fantasticBecause I had my kids with me, I didn't go over to the Secrets side except to go to the gym which was great. It is about a five dollar cab ride into town and we found some great little restaurants and stores in the Zona Romantica. I didn't like the busy Malecon too much but that is just me. We had a great beach dinner at La Palapa. Had a lovely dinner at The Iguana at Casa Kimberly. We also went to Pipe's with kids and it was really fun. It's an iconic place with a lot of energy.
