Our Opinion

The Plaza Pelicanos has a true Mexican feel to it. It's beautiful and recently renovated. The rooms are very simple; be sure to ask for an alarm clock at the front desk! The grounds are well kept. The pool is huge, with a swim-up bar, but the service there isn't so great. The restaurants have excellent service however, and amazing food. This hotel has virtually NO beach. There are no activities either. This hotel is more for R&R, and quiet clients looking for a basic, simple place to stay. The tower at this hotel is all timeshares, so watch out for timeshare reps!

Recently renovated to add facilities, the 4-storey Plaza Pelicanos is well-located on Playa Las Glorias, just north of Old Puerto Vallarta. The distinctly Mexican roof tiles and faade of the entrance set the tone for its laid-back, fun-loving, seaside style.

Location: On the Hotel Strip located in the hotel zone of Puerto Vallarta. The Beach Club section is just a 3 min walk to the beach. Approximately 10 minutes from the airport.

Friendly, Understanding, Sympathetic and Caring Staff

We are so glad we chose to spend three weeks at the Pelicanos Grand - but our circumstances were not what you would wish for during a vacation. (Feb.18-March 11/17). We chose this small Resort and its location because we wanted to spend a quiet time relaxing and be able to celebrate our birthdays without any fuss (79 and 80). We had a lovely one bedroom suite on the fourth floor with an excellent view of the ocean and Mismaloya in the far distance. Our kitchen had everything we needed and we had many pleasant meals on our large balcony enjoying the view. We were within easy walking distance to the shops and local bus, and did lots of sightseeing and exploring our first ten days. Unfortunately our restful holiday came to an abrupt end when my husband became seriously ill on his birthday, was rushed into hospital and I spent my birthday two days later by his bedside and he didn't even know me! Six days later he was released and we prepared to return home. During this entire stressful experience I would not have been able to cope without the exceptional kindness and caring shown me by the Manager Eladio and, on his day off, Jaime. They made phone calls for me, loaned me their personal phones and sympathised when I couldn't get through to Airmiles to change our tickets, because I kept getting cut off. As soon as the Bellmen saw me they would summon a taxi to take me to visit my husband, and as this was such a stressful time for me it was so nice to come home to my "Pelicanos Family" after a day at the Hospital. A big thankyou also to our maid Sylvia, on the 4th floor. What a thoughtful surprise it was when Eladio presented us with two fancy birthday cakes to help us celebrate our missed birthdays! I am sorry for the delay in expressing our thanks for all you did, but I also became quite sick after returning home and now I'm pleased to say, we are both recovered. Hopefully we will be able to return again one day and thank you in person - the service you provided was exceptional.

Family vacation

The grand Pelicanos resort was nice and inexpensive. We enjoyed our stay again. We have been here one other time years ago.The resort is a little outdated ,but in 6 months there will close it and remodel the entire resort. All the people were very nice and we had no issues with anyone. Best part is the resort is 4 blocks from the Mega grocery store and a a taxi to the town -Malecon was $80 peso! We are mossy in town with the local restaurants, very good and cheap! The grill at the pool had great food!

If you like being treated poorly, stay here.

Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful location. Probably my favorite location in Mexico. Most of the locals are very friendly and happy to have your business. Even in the Trump era. That's what makes this experience so disappointing. Beginning with check in, we never felt welcome. They start the process by making you put on one of those plastic event wrist bands. You know the ones that are tight and pull the hair off your arm. I felt like cattle being tagged for tracking. After two days of trying to deal with the band, I took mine off. First, it was uncomfortable and made sleeping difficult. Second, I might as well have been wearing a sign that advertised I was a tourist primed for mugging. We returned to the hotel after a night at a really cool location that used to be owned by director John Houston. They now ferry visitors to the remote location for dinner and a show called Rythm of the Night. Check out my review on that experience -- it is definately worth the time and expense.Back to my concentration camp story. We return to the hotel, and are accosted by security as we come in the door. The same security that are no where to be seen during the day when you need help with a taxi or some other issue. We explain that we took off our bands because they made us uncomfortable. We try to continue to our room, but are ushered back to the front desk. I produce my room key and ID, and the lead security person tells me I have to wear the band. I explain that I don't HAVE to do anything. That's when the lead security man tells me that if I don't like the rules, I don't have to stay here. He's right, and I won't ever again. In addition to the poor customer service, the food on property is mediocre at best, and if you don't pay for the all-inclusive (and you shouldn't, it's a terrible deal) it is expensive. To be fair, the rooms are nice and the housekeeping staff work hard. Overall, the property feels old and tired. With so many amazing places to stay (if you want to splurge for a truly one-of-a-kind experience, check out Hacienda San Angel), skip this joint. They really don't care if you're here or not. As security reminded me, I don't have to stay here.

Good location

Stayed in a 2 bedroom "suite" room. It was a one bedroom suite room with a door to a conjoining 2 bedroom room that they unlocked and had together. More than enough room for two couples! The room had everything we needed with a kitchenette with stove, fridge and microwave. We cooked some small breakfasts in the room to save money and it worked perfectly. The pool area and beach area were great and offered a lot of relaxation time. The hotel staff was also wonderful and very helpful in giving us tips for places to go and how to get places. After arriving, they offered us a free tequila tasting and tour for the next day and we decided to go. The tour was very informative and we went to a local shop where our guide told us all about how they make tequila and gave us tastings and tips on how to look for good tequilas. We ended up buying 3 bottles and have a lot more knowledge from the experience. The hotel is close to a bunch of little shops and some restaurants (go to el Camaron Express!) And you can hop on a blue bus marked Centro to get a $7 pesos and around 10 min ride to the malecon. Great stay at plaza pelicanos!

Wait staff

I especially appreciate a waiter by the pool area, His name is Gerardo or "Jerry", he was especially nice, courteously, and got to know my family well. His service was above and beyond what I expect at a resort. (His supervisor is Raul). Gerardo always greeted us and made us feel at home as well as anticipating our needs. I want to give him a huge thank you!
