My wife and I stayed two weeks at the Sunscape Puerto Vallarta, initially we were unsure of what to expect given some of the reviews but we needn’t have worried as we had great time. Admittedly the hotel is a bit tired but the new owners are working on improvements. On the plus side it’s really well situated 15minutes from the airport, 15 minutes from the town with great transport links and right on the beach. The food was really good but what sets this resort apart are the staff, can’t praise them enough. Thalia from the World Buffet staurant was always so welcoming and became our Spanish teachers during our stay, we miss your welcoming smile. The entertainment team Wendy, Jamie, Marisol, Jonathan, Ramon, Edson are such hard working, helpful people who made our stay such a joy, from the bottom of my heart I thank you all. I also wish to share one incident with you all, I’m not a big drinker but on this one rare occasion I went to get a beer, before me stood a young girl approx 8 to 10 years of age and she ordered a milk shake. Once the milk shake was made Omar poured it into a fancy glass and said to the young girl “I have given this to you in a speacial class cos you are so special” the young girl lit up the room with her smile. Now that is customer service. I will finish up with a suggestion to management, the free WiFi is hit and miss instead of charging for decent WiFi make it free to all guests as internet connectivity is so important to people. God bless all the staff see you next year.
My family and I stayed at this resort for a week at the end of January. Overall I would say it was average. We did pay to have the Sun Club amenities but really that was never monitored as there were no wrist bands given out at check in. We were in the Sun Club lounge several times and people appeared to just boast in the "better" booze and run out of there, a couple of times there were staff members sitting at the desk in there but never once did they ask even us for a room number etc. to identify that we should actually be in there. The service was okay at the bar inside the resort (the pool bar service was out of this world amazing) The bartenders were extremely friendly, however, there was always a lineup waiting for drinks (on more than one occasion I waited over 15 minutes for a drink in a lineup). When we first got there and were told that there were no reservations needed for the restaurants we thought that was good, however, after waiting for over an hour and 45 minutes at the Italian restaurant and just over an hour and 15 minutes at the Seaside Grill we quickly decided that this wasn't a perk at all. The food however, at each place was delicious so made the wait the little more bearable. The housekeeping staff was below average. There had been a little bit of pop dropped on the floor and that remained there for our entire stay. We also asked for our bedding to be changed every day and it wasn't, the same spot that was on it when we arrived was there the entire week. When we finally found a maid to ask her to please ensure it gets done it was replaced with a white cover that was covered with brown streaks on it, completely disgusting!Josseline at the front desk went above and beyond when checking us in/out and everything in between. When we got there to check in, there was only one Sun Club room left at our level so she upgraded myself and my fiance to the Honeymoon suite on the top floor. The views were absolutely stunning and breathtaking (thank you for that). I do however think if I was actually there for a honeymoon I would have been disappointed in the rooms. Yes the terrace and views were amazing, however, the room itself had nothing special. It was just a large king bed in a room. There were no chairs, couches, Jacuzzi tubs etc.. The entertainment on the beach at night was very good. We were all incredibly impressed by it. Overall it was a fantastic trip with a beautiful beach and pretty good resort. We had a good time but this resort did not make us want to go back.
Top notch from day 1!! We had a group of 17 stay for 7 days. It was our 20th Anniversary and we had our vow renewal in the beach/gazebo. I can not say enough about Fabiola the wedding coordinator. She rocked!! From the smallest of details to the dinner reception. She went above and beyond every step of the way. We were on a budget and you would have never known by the way she had everything planned. It was truly something that I had pictured. She was even there to say good bye on our last day as the bus was pulling out for the air port. We were treated like VIP’s from the moment we arrived at the resort. The others to mention who made our stay memorable were Carlos with concierge services. He was amazing!!! He always went above and beyond to make sure we were having a great time. From the beachside beds to our day of tequila tour and downtown shopping. We became so close that it felt like we left part of our group behind. The others were Antonio with Amstar. He even walk with us to one of our excursions. My 9year old loved the science lesson with him. From the bartenders like Omar to all the wait staff and entertainment. Our group of men went fishing and the head chef even prepared their catch for our entire group for dinner that night. We could not have asked for a better vacation. The only con would be the pool side chair issues, there are not enough to go around. We figured out thou that if you get up by 7:30 and grab some chairs you are gold for the rest of the day. The other con was we had smokers in our group and the last two days of our vacation seem to change. All the ashtrays were removed and they were told they could no longer smoke were they had the entire week prior and no one could answer why. But we did not let these minor things ruin our last couple days. We are already looking at our dates for next year!!
This trip was our second stay with this resort. Having a unique experience the first time around, I was hesitant to book a second time, but so very glad we did. (The first experience was beyond our control and was not reviewed previously....but Sunscape did work with us and our situation was resolved above our expectations.)Upon arrival, we were greeted at the front desk and quickly checked in. Our room was not ready, but we were instructed to have lunch and come back in 30 minutes. We did and were escorted to a lovely room in the suite tower directly facing the beach and pool area. We were not disappointed with our room. We had a lovely king suite with spacious sitting area. Our balcony was comfortable for two people to sit and watch sunset on the bay. We had a double vanity in the bathroom, walk in shower that you could easily fit 4-6 people in and separate toilet (with door for privacy). Our room had plenty of storage for a 7 night stay. A closet with shelving and space to hang clothing. (I always bring extra hangers as there are usually not enough, which was again the case.) Our closet also had a safe, which was easily programmed to our own security code. The room did not have a musty smell and kept a nice, even, non-humid temperature the whole trip. It was VERY comfortable! There were several couples with us that had booked the same room. Please note that the request for king or double queen rooms are only requests. They are not guarantees. The layout of the rooms are also different based on where you are in the building. One couple only had a single vanity, another had a very small closet with no additional shelving. But the square footage allowed for larger living spaces. The food was very good for a small resort, tho the following may not lead you to believe that: The dress code is not enforced at the Italian restaurant....which was my least favorite. Others in our group went there multiple nights because they enjoyed the food so much. The buffet was plentiful for all meals. There will be people that will complain about wait times at the egg stations, from my experience, they were faster than most! The sit down dinner at Seaside Grill was less than impressive. Service was slow and food mediocre. The Barefoot Grill was a favorite for all of us while at the pool. The chicken burrito and fries were a staple in our diet daily. We never dined at Tiki Taco as we did in our previous trip and were not impressed....tho others in our group went and loved it. The specialty nights were the best. We were there for the Superbowl and this resort did not disappoint food-wise! Amazing choices, both hot and cold with lots and lots of servers to fulfill any request. We also enjoyed the Mexican night as well as Latin night. The pool was our favorite part of this resort. Great music and great service. We had discussed and never did find out if the pool was heated. It is small enough tho that it was warm and inviting. There were lots of activities going on, but the staff was not annoying about getting people involved. Poolside servers were plentiful and friendly....you will never have an empty drink! You also don't have to walk far for food, drink or restrooms, like at other resorts. The chairs. This seems to cause much angst in these reviews. If you want a chair, be willing to get up early and get one. It's that simple. There are plenty of chairs available on the weekdays, the weekends (Thursday thru Sunday) are different. People WILL and have the right to go down and claim chairs as a group. They WILL keep those chairs all day, just because they aren't there at that moment, doesn't mean that the chairs are not theirs for the day. They WILL adhere to the one hour hold rule. The resort WILL mark unattended chairs and WILL remove belongings that have no one in the chair after one hour. If you understand this, then you will be perfectly happy with the chair situation. If this isn't the way you want it, there is no flexibility and you may want to consider another resort. I didn't hear a single complaint about chair availability when I was there. The beach area was crowded and busy with peddlers. Not my cup of tea, but nice nonetheless. There are also servers on the beach, so no need to get up! Being that the beach is not private, literally every 30 seconds, there is someone there trying to sell something. A simple, "No gracias" works just fine. The beach area is wide and marked off with rope where the resort property ends. Don't take your towel past that line. They will ask for it immediately. If you don't like this rule, bring your own towel for beach days. I did hear a condo owner complain about not being able to take a towel down as an owner....but, again, they know the rules. The service at this resort is phenomenal! Everyone was pleasant and willing to bend over backwards for a guest. Tipping is not necessary, but much appreciated. We did have two service moments that were responded to quickly. The bar in our closet fell that held our hanging items. I reported it before breakfast and upon our return it had been fixed. The other was a BIG thing I wish we would have known! Check your door to your balcony before you go out and shut it behind you! It will lock and there is no way to alert anyone that you are locked out. Thankfully we had a phone and I was able to text, but I could see someone not having a phone and being completely stuck! Our friend reported it and we were rescued in a matter of minutes!! Apparently this happens at least once a day....perhaps they should fix that small issue? The location of the resort is great! Just four miles from downtown, you can easily walk or take a quick taxi. The bay is so smooth in the morning....nice enough to paddleboard. There's whale watching in the bay, so make sure if the bells are ringing, you head to the beach to take a look!I also should point out that the resort has spa services available. We did not use those services, instead we opted for the little shop downstairs. We had 3 massages while we were there....and they were phenomenal. $25 for a traditional one hour massage and $50 for a deep tissue 1.5 hour massage. You really cannot beat it!I would absolutely return to this resort. We had a very relaxing vacation and enjoyed the location and value most of all.
Currently installed in room 117, this is a bonus last minute holiday travelling with my daughter and husband. We’ve previously stayed high end Caribbean coast of Mexico a few times previous. We were a little sceptical after some of the negative reviews ...... however, we’re having a brilliant time.Staff - wonderful, friendly, attentive, great poolside service, coffee bar, restaurants alike - flawless service, they easily exceed the service at previous 5 star hotels.Food - We’ve used the main buffet, lunchtime barefoot grill and Mexican Tiki-Taco ( also a buffet ) The food has been great, tasty burgers, fries, nachos etc at the Barefoot, excellent breakfasts, lots of fruit, egg station, meats, cereals bread, etc, gorgeous views watching the sun rise.Mexican is great - we’ve enjoyed the food and the the Mexican Coffee Cart a lovely touch. Enjoyed lots of coffee cookies and pastries at the CoCo coffee bar - nice touch and very useful with a fussy 8year old! Rooms and Resort, it is an old resort - however it’s spotlessly clean, lovely cleaners, towels changed regularly, comfy beds, loads of beach towels available. Sunbeds - a few more would be a good idea- you do have to get up early. Beach vendors - not a problem we bought a few trinkets - but a simple no thank you and no pressure to buy. This hotel is a quick 15 mins from the air port - my advise is get a taxi. Check in quick and easy. Small accessible resort, lots of visitors staying months at a time in the condo’s - I can easily see why you’d stay here.Malacon easy taxi ride into town, well worth a look, lots of places to eat and drink - daily flea market is a must, taxi’s arranged through porters at the front of the lobby. If you can accept this isn’t a new high end hotel, but offers great value, 5* absolutely lovely staff, couldn’t recommend highly enough.
