- What's Included
This popular standard hotel is directly on the beach within walking distance of downtown Puerto Vallarta. Located directly on Los Muertos beach in Old Puerto Vallarta, walking distance to restaurants, shops and nightclubs.
Location: Beachfront, 25 minutes from the airport.
We staying here with another couple as they had stayed here previously. It is a nice hotel. Our view was beautiful. The room was clean and comfortable. Loved the beach. Lots of action. We loved the vendors, tried the shrimp , oysters, cucumbers, donuts, muffins. All delicious. Marcela at security is so wonderful, hardworking and so pleasant. Loved the proximity to restaurants which were all fabulous. New Years eve in Puerto Valartta is pretty awesome. Over all a great week.
Overall we were pleased with this hotel and would recommend it.Pros:Right on the beach in the old town, has two pools with restaurant and bar that is very reasonably priced and quite good. There is a small pond where a few turtles live and the guests enjoyed watching them. Rooms were clean and comfortable and ours had great views of the beach and bay. Air conditioning works well. Bathroom is very clean with standup shower only. There are all kinds of people here - families, singles, young and older couples, male couples and everyone seems to be welcome. All guests must wear an armband and although annoying it also provides a level of security, you are not allowed to bring non-quests to your room.Cons: Would be nice to have a fridge and coffeepot in the room. Wifi is only in the lobby and not a great signal at that.We booked a superior king room and at check-in we were told there were only two double bedded rooms available. The next day, I went to lobby to ask to be moved and was told there were no king rooms available. Although we reserved a superior room, I believe the room that we got was a standard room as it matched the pictures on the web site, not the pictures shown for the superior room. The front desk disagreed with me. The double bed was a bit uncomfortable for the two of us.Tip: Although its a nice little find in the old town, make sure you get the room you paid for. If needed bring the picture from the web site showing both the standard and superior rooms to show at the front desk.
I keep coming back to this place as it is on my short list, and things get a bit better each time I come back. Excellent location, on the beach, old hotel area, gay area, etc. Everything is within walking distance so bring your walking shoes and enjoy the exercise.Rooms are updated (if you don't go for the economy room). Air conditioning worked perfectly, and if not needed there is a ceiling fan as well. TV is either flat screen or large tube depending on which room you get, but it works well. Bathroom is slightly dated, but the water pressure and temperature are good at all times. Water is actually quite hot if you don't pay attention. This hotel has been kept well. Clean, tidy, and almost everything is in order. The front desk staff were more helpful this time. Internet works well in the lobby and by the pool/bar, but if you need service in your room you may want to purchase a local SIM for your cell phone data on an unlocked phone (not expensive at all). You can bring guests to the bar and lobby area, but please note that guests cannot go to your room in this hotel without paying the daily surcharge in advance. Bracelets are required to be worn at all times, even if you don't have the breakfast option (I always prefer to eat elsewhere). Alcohol at the pool bar is reasonably priced as well. Chairs and palapas are available by the beach, but I havn't been there for several years... I tend to go to green chairs area instead.
This was our 15 th time staying at the Tropicana Hotel. we fully understand the level of this hotel and have selected it because of the area and all the restaurants that you can walk to. Plus I fell it's safe and and lots to see walking around at night plus some good cocktail bars.BUT--the quality has dropped. The room was filthy when we checked into the room. The toilet had feces on it and there were long black hairs everywhere on the floor sink toilet and counter. we tried to wipe it down but I was so disgusted I called housekeeping and two supervisors came and made the maid re-clean the entire room. It was much better but not perfect. We went out and bought Lysol cleaner and spray. The room is lacking in plugs for iphone or computers to charge them at night. For 4 nights we were having a relative stay with us--I called and booked a cot weeks before travel. they had no idea. SO I re-booked it when we checked in. I reminded them the day of her arrival. and was told no problem that they cot would be there when she arrived. She arrived no cot no idea she was coming. So I went with her to registration. And even the women I spoke to had no idea. So could we have the cot. wee all went o lunch and when we returned around 3-no cot. I called the desk and demanded (politely) that they send the cot. finally it arrived. ( a minor hitch)One thing the Tropicana is now doing is having day passes and large family groups of locals. Which is terrific for business. But the problem is they are out of control. People are being dived on in the pool splashed by water guns and footballs and loud music. One visitor finally went to security and complained about the boom Box and it was turned down. And they had coolers of beer which I think they were told to bring them to the beach area. I think it's great to have the hotel full for business but there needs to be limits. MANY at the pool from Canada and US were saying this might be their last year coming here. One couple said this was their 10th year in a row and they have already decided to look elsewhere for next year. It's to bad since the Hotel has made some advances--add internet in the pool area, the drink hut is enlarged and there was a 2 nd pool added a few years ago. The staff is friendly and especially the beach and pool workers. But if this sort of loud out of control patrons continue their business may be hurt.
I booked this hotel via Expedia as an addition to my flight. Got a room with two double beds, washroom and full kitchen. Price is just right considering the standard of a 3 star hotel. No surprises, no disappointments so far. Like the layout of the swimming pool between the hotel and the beach. One thing that I am actually missing is an internet connection in my room. I have to get down to the lobby and pool area to be able to use internet. I met a couple couple who comes to this hotel for a number of years. This year they are here for two months. I will have to check if they have some special rates for a long term stay. I might do that too...
