Our Opinion

A great resort. Newly renovated rooms are very spacious, and the staff will cater to your requests to ensure that you are comfortable. The majority of food served in this resort is Mexican cuisine, and it has an OK variety of alcohol on the shelf. This is a resort suited for those who want to venture away from the resort facilities and enjoy the beach and wildlife that surrounds it.

Overview

Explore the natural wonders of the Mayan Riviera from this ideally situated all-inclusive. Golf at the nearby Puerto Aventuras course or visit the natural aquarium of Xel-Ha and the ancient ruins of Tulum. After your outings, relax under the giant palapa roof of the beachside main restaurant and admire the beautiful ocean view. Families appreciate the spacious accommodations, fun Kids' Club, kilometre-long white sandy beach and calm reef-protected waters.

Location: Beachfront, 20 min to Playa del Carmen, 60 min from the airport.

Loved every second...

Just got back from an unforgettable week at the Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort. Would go back again in a heartbeat. Loved every second of our holiday. Pros:-delicious food at the buffet and 4 restaurants. No reservations taken- just turn up. -health food lovers, rejoice- everything you want is there: chia seeds, sprouts, brown rice, lentils, cut up veggies, green smoothies at the breakfast juice station, etc. -reliable wifi all over property-all rooms facing and right on the ocean -white sandy beach-quiet and peaceful area- uncrowded-30 min drive to Tulum. Cheapest by “collectivo” vans (like public transport). About 35 pesos per person per way. -pools and bars all throughout resort-staff are super friendly, professional, neatly dressed -good variety of activities: yoga, spinning, Pilates, massage, snorkeling, stand up paddling, aqua Zumba, games room (although it's not on the resort map, so we sadly never found it)-sushi bar right at the main pool. Liliana is the best sushi maker ever, and remembered our order each day. -24 snack bar at the main pool- great if you arrive after the buffet closes-fabulous fitness instructor- Beatriz Morfin for spinning, Pilates, and Aqua Zumba. She knows her stuff. -fun activities girls for dancing lessons, guacamole-making class, games, etc. Thank you, Giovanna, Kenia, Jhovonna, and Karla-free books to use if you forget a beach read. Kept near the check-in desk, and the trolley gets brought to the pool each afternoon by Abel- thank you. Cons: -70 min drive from Cancun airport (but it's a straight drive on the highway and doesn't seem too long). Drive can be longer if your driver has to stop at other resorts to drop off/pick up other guests. Didn’t bother us. The drive was worth it to get to a quieter location. -not much to do at night (bring your laptop to watch Netflix)-more towels needed at the pools- they run out often and didn't always replenish them very quickly -would have loved a smoothie bar by the sushi place where you can choose which fruits and veggies go in your smoothie drink- that would have added to the "wellness" aspect of the resort, as per its name. -housekeeping often didn't clean our room till 4pm. Not too big a deal, but we would have preferred earlier. As such, it was strange that we couldn't get a check-out time later than 12 noon without paying $10/hour for a room that would have been sitting empty and dirty anyway. -staff in the white shirts in the lobby/reception area are quite keen to sign you up for an info session on buying into the Fidelity Club. We weren't interested, so didn't love being approached over and over when we walked thru the lobby, from the moment we arrived. -no kids club/babysitting service. There is a dinner kids club for ages 4-12, but nothing during the day. Don’t think we’d come back with our kids for this reason. Sad, because in every other way we would (if we were coming alone).

The room and amenities were fantastic. The service was exceptional. The beach was clean and beautiful. The wellness services are fantastic and the setting is phenomenal. There is a good selection of different foods to try. I must say again the service is exceptional.

Paradise

We are just getting back from a group 40th birthday celebration trip to Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort. Overall the trip was spectacular (besides my husband and I being very sick and loosing a few days!). The grounds of the resort were some of the cleanest and best kept I've ever seen...at any given time of day you can see people working to maintain the gorgeous property. The service was exceptional, we barely had to think of needing a new drink before the beautiful Maria or Marbella would enthusiastically take our orders. All of the staff people were kind and courteous. A special mention to the tours & excursion planners Juan & Tim for helping us have some of the most memorable experiences of our vacation. ***One thing worth mentioning that I found to be very bizarre; I had gone to our room to get our Visa to pay for an excursion with the intention of bringing it right back, I had left our room safe open in that short time and it just so happened the maid service arrived during my time away from the room...I'm told this is the hotels policy...I returned to the room to find 2 security guards and the maid taking an itemized inventory of our safe - when I arrived they were counting our money! The explanation I was given was, the hotel policy is at any time a maid finds an open safe, security is called and a written inventory is taken to insure that any reports of missing items can be compared to the list to protect the maid. I personally strongly disagree with this policy and feel it should be revised (a suggestion would be to have the maid leave a note indicating that she found the safe open and did not feel comfortable cleaning the room at that time, if you call the front desk we can arrange housekeeping for you at another time). ALL THAT CONSIDERED, I would stay at Akumal Bay again... it was a peaceful, quiet, beautiful resort with some great snorkeling right at your doorstep.

Best Beach front in Mexico

The resort is very nice, well taken care of and very very friendly staff. Oscar Torres who will be one of the staff members who will greet you when you arrive is exceptional in his English and very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. He will be able help you with just about anything, look for him when you arrive. The Beach front is awesome, there are turtles to see right in front of the resort. The water is excellent to swim and snorkel in and there are great snorkelling areas all the way down the beach towards the dive shops. In front of the dive shops are the biggest turtles spots. The food is typical for all inclusive vacation spots in our opinion.

Perfect

Just came home from a week here. Was absolutely lovely. We arrived early evening and were greeted with a needed towel and drink. Some confusion with checking in as you need your confirmation email printed out to show them. This was settled quite quickly but be aware. Our cases were taken to our room within minutes. We were in block 3. This was a short walk from the main bar, close enough so you weren't walking for ages but far enough you aren't disturbed with noise. We had been upgraded to a penthouse suite which was amazing! Huge comfy double bed and open bathroom with balcony and stairs up to our own private sun lounge and jacuzzi!! Highlights:Food and drink was amazing! We are at all the a la carte restaurants and all were fabulous. There was the option of upgrading the wine if you wanted to. You can't book these in advance which is nice but make sure you get your name down early in the evening otherwise you will be eating late.Service - all the staff were incredibly helpful and worked very hard Day and night. Resort itself - although seemed small it was not too busy and there were enough places for people to go without feeling cramped. It was spotlessly clean throughoutThings to improve:There really is nothing that impacted on our holiday but a few suggestions:- introduce a card scheme for towels. The hotel staff do remove towels from beds that are not being used but we struggled to find sun beds by mid morning where people had beds reserved around the pool and on the beach- cleaning lady in our room sometimes hasn't been until 5pm at which point we wanted to go back to our room and relax. - more non motorised water sports to be available- better advertising of in resort activities e.g. Yoga etc
