Our Opinion

A great resort. Newly renovated rooms are very spacious, and the staff will cater to your requests to ensure that you are comfortable. The majority of food served in this resort is Mexican cuisine, and it has an OK variety of alcohol on the shelf. This is a resort suited for those who want to venture away from the resort facilities and enjoy the beach and wildlife that surrounds it.

Overview

Explore the natural wonders of the Mayan Riviera from this ideally situated all-inclusive. Golf at the nearby Puerto Aventuras course or visit the natural aquarium of Xel-Ha and the ancient ruins of Tulum. After your outings, relax under the giant palapa roof of the beachside main restaurant and admire the beautiful ocean view. Families appreciate the spacious accommodations, fun Kids' Club, kilometre-long white sandy beach and calm reef-protected waters.

Location: Beachfront, 20 min to Playa del Carmen, 60 min from the airport.

Another amazing week at Akumal bay

While the bay gets busier with all the restrictions and new neighbors, the resort just gets better and better the customer service and staff are second to none, everyone is helpful and happy from Wilbert, Sintia and Yeni in the main bar right down to all the grounds people everyone greets you and makes you feel welcome, we had a couple of problems in the room which with one phone call were resolved in under 20 min. The food at the buffet has improved over the last few years so we didn't eat at the specialty restaurants this year however I'm sure they are still great, had sushi one afternoon still as good as always, between the location, beach and service its hard to beat this resort, I guess that's what keeps me coming back.

Superb

Lovely resort with lovely people & set in a beautiful location. We stayed for 14 nights & enjoyed every minute. We were originally allocated a Junior Suite on the second floor but on our second week were upgraded to a Penthouse Suite. Although we liked the Penthouse we preferred the Junior suite due to the access to the Jacuzzi & the extra storage space for our belongings. The wardrobe in the Junior suite had 3 drawers & the bedroom was more spacious. We stayed in building 3 which was what we asked for when we booked as we didn't want to be in the busy area by buildings 1 & 2. The beds are really comfy with plenty of pillows & all rooms have a sea view with air con & a fan. There are separate toilet & shower areas in each room, along with a fridge which is restocked daily with a chocolate bar, a pack of crisps, 2 tins of Sprite, 2 coke, 1 Fanta, 2 Heineken, 1 bottle of fizzy water & 1 bottle of normal still.Shower gel, bath salts, shampoo & conditioner are supplied & restocked as required & towels changed daily, bedding is changed when requested or just remade with lovely towel art displays from the maid. There are plenty of places to eat & drink throughout the resort with a 24 hour drink/snack bar but we found the service to be poor here so didn't use often during our stay. All other bars & restaurants are excellent with staff that are just the friendliest you will ever meet. We particularly liked to use the Sushi bar for a snack in the afternoon to tie us over until dinner which was made fresh in front of you. There are a variety of activities on offer from Snorkelling to water boarding but we chose to just relax & hope to see a giant Turtle during our stay. Due to retiring to our room at a reasonable hour most nights we din't get to see a Turtle until our last night when I was determined to stay up & see one. At approximately half ten I noticed a few people with red lights kneeling in the sand & behold there was a Giant Green Turtle laying it's eggs.... absolutely amazing is the only way to describe it before watching her crawl back to the sea around midnight & disappear back into the sea. There are 4 pools, 1 main & 3 plunge pools within spitting distance of the beach. The sand on the beach is powdery white a clean with any seaweed washed up cleared away daily by staffThe Sea is really shallow for quite a distance out with quite an array of fish which can be seen without a snorkel, we regularly saw Stingrays & Barracudas with lots of other tropical fish. The only real downside was the few days where we were not able to use our balcony or Jacuzzi due to the amount of flies & bugs outside, we informed our rep who arranged for the front of our whole block to be fumigated around the plants which sorted the problem.I would recommend this hotel to anyone as we really enjoyed our stay & will cherish the memories for years to come

Great Hotel - FANTASTIC STAFF !!

My wife and I stayed at the ABBWR from the 28th August to the 11th September, and celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary on the 29th August. The staff make this hotel what it is, and they are all fantastic. Simple as that really. From the moment we stepped off the transfer coach to the minute we left, every member of staff we met could not do enough for you. You are treated like royalty for the whole time you are there. Everyone from the Bell Boys, Cleaners, Gardeners, bar staff, waiters and waitresses to the reception staff, are always smiling, greeting you with an "hola" and making sure that your stay is the best it can be. I am sure the friendliness of the staff rubs off on everyone who stays here too, as we have never meet so many new friends during a holiday before - it was just superb!.Although I didn't want to individually mention names, as everyone deserves high praise, I do want to give a mention to Adrian who works at the Sushi bar during the day. He was always laughing, and joking with us, he made some supper cocktails, and made sure we were enjoying our stay. Thank you Adrian. The hotel itself, is immaculate, the grounds are stunning and its location, right on the beach, cannot be bettered! Having the new "Secrets" hotel right next door, only goes to highlight how wonderful this hotel is, as the Secrets hotel, although very new, looked bland and "soulless" in comparison. The food at the hotel was generally very good. We visited all the Al a Carte restaurants, and although we didn't really get the concept of the "Steakhouse" during our first visit (as we were expecting to get a Steak for our dinner) it actually turned out to be the restaurant we visited most, I believe it was 4 times during our 2 week stay. Our next favourite was the Japanese Fusion restaurant, where the sweet and sour chicken was superb. Although we ate at the Gourmet and the Mexican too, we were not that impressed with the food we ate. We did eat in the buffet restaurant and had most of our lunches at the 24hr snack bar (purely for convenience when stepping off the beach) and all the food we ate there was good. One thing that was an issue with most of the restaurants, was the lack of air conditioning. With the exception of the Japanese and the Gourmet restaurants, non of the other restaurants had any form of AC, just ceiling fans. This is a big issue, and personally I think this really needs to be addressed. It was so bad, that when we visited the Al A Carte restaurants, unless there was a table below a ceiling fan, we would not eat in that restaurant, or wait until one became available. We would not eat in the Buffett unless we were seated next to the large open windows at the front of the room. It did make for some uncomfortable meal times. The drinks were great, with named brands available. The beer on tap was good, and Heineken was available in cans (and in the mini bar in the room).Evening entertainment was generally good, with a good selection of live bands playing most nights. Saturday nights, the hotel put on a Champagne & Chocolates night in the main lobby - very nice! They also had tequila tasting sessions, and a local small market on a Thursday night, where local craft stall would be set up along the side of the pool area - great for getting a few trinkets to take home. And now, the real highlight of the hotels location - the beach. Apart from the seaweed, that was of no fault of the hotels, and was constantly being cleaned up by the hotels workforce, it was immaculate. Pure white sands, leading into a turquoise coloured sea, with a shallow sea bed for easy access. On top of that, you have a reef, that is full of life, right on your door step. I have never snorkelled before this visit, but once I had tried it (on our 2nd day), I was in the sea every day. I can only describe it as like you are swimming in a tropical fish tank! - just superb. We were lucky to see the turtles, rays, cuttle fish and numerous other brightly coloured fish, literally every day! Awesome. Would we return to this hotel? What do you think? ........of course we would! Thank you to everyone at ABBWR for making our holiday, and our 25th wedding anniversary, fantastic!

Best holiday ever

What can I say simply fantastic the way the staff conduct themselves is impeccable and a lot of other hotels could learn a thing or two from the warm friendly welcome we got from Luis in the rain he made us laugh by promising sunshine and he made good on his promise haha. Thought the food was great and not really being a buffet fan have been converted. Jahaziel with the butlers was an absolute God send translating for us on a couple of occasions one of which was changing a tattoo appointment. Couldn't walk past the pool bar without getting a shout from Oscar who done a mean double mojito and was always up for some friendly banter also Sintia and her sidekick wilberth in the lobby bar who never forgot our tipple.A final thanks to Norma who done amazing towel art in our room. We're just home and already looking at dates to go back so adios por ahora will see you all next year.

Cannot wait to go back!!

My husband and I just returned from an 8 day vacation here. It was amazing! The snorkeling right off the beach is just as good as any other off shore trip we have taken. We saw tons of sting rays, a flounder, tons of beautiful fish and even the barracuda they named Pedro. We swam with the turtles every single day. You do have to go in front of secrets to see them because that is where the sea grass is. The food was the best we have every had at an all inclusive. The Japanese was our favorite. The gourmet was also wonderful and we wanted to give a shout out to Aaron there. He was wonderful and so much fun. It really seemed like he loves his job and we loved having him as a waiter. The sushi bar was also great. I am not a big sushi fan but since it is to order they gladly took out any items I did not want. Also Oscar making drinks at the sushi bar was great. He remembered our names every time we came up and also our drinks that we liked to order. We decided we are going to come back with our kids someday. The only issue we had was there isn't a lot of shade. We never had a problem getting a sunbed since it is towards the off season but we didn't enjoy the main pool as much as we could of because there is never shade over it. That being said there are smaller pools in front of the some of the buildings which were a little more shaded so we just stuck to those. We stayed in building 3 which was nice because it isn't next to the main pool or bar so it is quite. The beach in front is a little rocky but it is also where all the turtle nests are. We didn't get to see any hatch but we did see one lay eggs! We did also go to Tulum, Xel-Ha and La Buena Vida. Tulum and Xel-ha are worth it! We had so much fun at both. La Buena Vida had the best tacos and nachos Ive ever had. You can walk into the town of Akumal and rent a golf cart to get there. Overall we had an amazing trip and cannot wait to go back!
