Our Opinion

A great resort. Newly renovated rooms are very spacious, and the staff will cater to your requests to ensure that you are comfortable. The majority of food served in this resort is Mexican cuisine, and it has an OK variety of alcohol on the shelf. This is a resort suited for those who want to venture away from the resort facilities and enjoy the beach and wildlife that surrounds it.

Overview

Explore the natural wonders of the Mayan Riviera from this ideally situated all-inclusive. Golf at the nearby Puerto Aventuras course or visit the natural aquarium of Xel-Ha and the ancient ruins of Tulum. After your outings, relax under the giant palapa roof of the beachside main restaurant and admire the beautiful ocean view. Families appreciate the spacious accommodations, fun Kids' Club, kilometre-long white sandy beach and calm reef-protected waters.

Location: Beachfront, 20 min to Playa del Carmen, 60 min from the airport.

Just amazing! Could the 2nd time get better

Simply amazing! And yes the 2nd visit was even better...because we knew the ins and outs.We visited 1st time in October and now just this past may. I will not repeat the overall comments on what make this resort great but offer thanks to the staff!Abigail serving our drinks on the beach, thank you! And she even remembered us!Benjamin at Alux, thank you for a beautiful 2 nights with you. He is a gem and an asset to your resort,we noticed that his guests tend to purchase the bottles of wine to enhance our dinners. I know we did! And it did create a romantic dinner.Jose at the Pelican bar, thank you for remembering everything from coffee preferences, adult beverages, and lastly for filling up our 40oz water bottle quite frequently!Aaron at the gormet restaurant for again 2 evenings of a wonderful dinner experience! And lastly Magnolia! Muchos gracias! Our room beautifully cleaned and beautiful towel art nightly! I carefully moved it nightly to ensure I enjoyed it fully!Sadly I do have 1 concern/complaint, at breakfast this visit was completely different and the service was not up to par. Getting coffee was a challenge most mornings, not sure what's happening but it seems to be a quick fix!If you want a beautiful resort to enjoy the sun and amazing staff, don't hesitate book now!We will return for sure as we have found our go to beach, romance, relaxation destination ūüėĄ

Best vacation

Absolutely gorgeous near brand new small beachfront resort. Every room is beach front. Very tastefully decorated though out and gives a balinese feeling Food was top notch and they waited on you with total regard. Lots to do and see Diving snorkelling or off resort excursions.

DREAM VACATION

I just got back from a week at this resort & it was wonderful. The staff was so friendly & helpful-some that stood out were Marcos-he made us feel welcome & special-he helped us with any questions we had or any needs that we had--THERE WAS Dagoberto who was our bartender on the beach & he made us great drinks and was so very friendly-when he took his day of rests he was truly missed.i also have to mention Abel the orchestra man who came by our beach spot & played music for us which was great! The room was wonderful & i looked forward to the towel displays that were on our bed every day< the place was clean & the beds were comfortable. The food was good & the atmosphere was nice. The View was fabulous,&the best part was that we got to swim several times with the fishes & the turtles!!! I would go back to this resort in a heart beat!! My only complaint was that they did not carry Corona Beer!

Nothing Spectacular

The negatives far outweighed the positives for this place. At first it seemed like an ideal resort. For a 5-star resort I expect the bathroom, or at least the toilet, to be a separate room. Instead, it is one big open room, with the toilet alcove and shower alcove just separated by swinging glass doors that are only about 5 feet in height (so not an actual door). When sharing a room with someone you're not overly close with, this makes an awkward situation almost unbearable, to never have any privacy. We stayed in building 4, which had the luxury of smelling like sewage overtime you exited the front door of the rooms. Luckily the odour did not penetrate into the rooms, and could not be detected on the balconies. Something positive. The food was mediocre. The buffet was a terrifying experience for anyone with any knowledge of basic food safety. Foods were all lukewarm, whether they were supposed to be cold, or even food brought fresh from the kitchen. It was obvious that meat temperatures were never taken, as I had multiple occurrences of cutting into a piece of meat (chicken and pork specifically) that were still raw. At every meal there were dishes incorrectly labelled at the buffet, making it difficult at times to discern what dishes actually were. The snack bar was also a food safety nightmare - as its open to the great outdoors (which when relaxing is actually really nice), but allowed birds to fly in and eat from the dishes at the buffet there, walking around the countertops. In the week we were there, I maybe saw one attendant actually make any effort to get rid of the birds. The vacation was for a destination wedding. The menus for the wedding reception was approved by the bride and groom, specifically approved based on dietary restrictions of some of the guests. When the courses were served, there were actually changes to the dishes, not approved by the couple, resulting in some of the guests being unable to actually eat the food due to allergies and dietary restrictions. There were positives, despite several of the guests getting sick from the food, and the substandard rooms. The staff are all very friendly, and super attentive. While other guests had issues getting things fixed with their rooms (my sister and her family had no air conditioning the entire week despite asking twice a day, everyday to have it fixed), I asked to have our balcony door fixed (would not open when we arrived), and for our refrigerator to be fixed (was not working), and both were repaired within hours of asking. The ability to swim with the sea turtles was a unique experience as well - you didn't have to go snorkelling to see them. We were out in the ocean in the afternoon, and they would sometimes swim right by you. Something worth experiencing. Also to note: there is very little to do activity wise at the resort. The only night-time entertainment is usually a small band that plays music that not many people enjoy, and finishes by 10pm. Personally feel the resort is at most 3 stars, and overpriced for what it is. It also seems to be geared more for an older crowd - for anyone under the age of 50, who actually enjoys being somewhat active, this is not the place for you. Will definitely not be returning - one experience was more than enough.

Our family of 6 loved the snorkeling here!

My husband and 4 children (13, 11, 9, 7) just spent 6 nights at Akumal Bay Resort in mid-May. We chose this resort because of the on-site snorkeling and great prices for our large family. Things we LOVED: 1. The ocean life from this beach! We snorkeled every day and swam with green turtles, sting ray, huge barracuda and lots of fish around the coral. It will be hard for us to ever consider staying somewhere else in the future that does not have this available.2. The ocean front rooms. Really, just amazing. We were on the 3rd level of Building 3 and probably had one of the better balcony views on the resort because we were so close to the beach and high enough to see over the trees.3. The price was great for our large family. We booked through Apple and included the flights. A really good deal.4. The Brazilian steakhouse was our favorite restaurant (we didn't do French since our boys didn't bring long pants). The staff here worked SO hard and the food was good. Thanks to Flor, Ivan, Kevin, Octavio, Ricardo, and Fredy for 2 great evening meals!5. Mariel with the Kids Club was super sweet and worked so hard with long hours. Our 3 younger kids spent 2 evenings with her during our evening meal. They had a great time and especially loved the pinata night and the Akumal Bay t-shirts. 6. The "snack bar" by the beach was SO great for our lunches every day while we were in between the beach and the pool. We expected burgers and hot dogs, but it was a fresh food buffet that varied daily with grilled meat (chicken, fish, etc), salads and fresh fruit, and amazing salsa and guac. On Thursday at noon they set up tables and served Mexican tacos that were AMAZING. Things We Would love to see CHANGED:1. Volleyball net on the beach or occasionally at the pool would have been fun. 2. Kayaks (Paddleboards were just going to be a bit too challenging for the kids. Maybe there is a reason due to the turtles off the beach for kayaks not being made available?)3. The service at the buffet was probably the worst on the resort, though it didn't really bother us. They just need more help in that area, at least at breakfast. The servers work really hard and are friendly, but just too many tables for them to keep up with. It is a buffet, though, so we were content to just walk around until we found what we needed for ourselves if we didn't have silverware, drinks, etc. A slew of new guests arrived Thursday afternoon and that Friday morning was a circus. We were so thankful we were leaving that morning with so many more people than the other days we were there!Other pros: Clean rooms, clean resort. Good showers. Comfy beds. Excellent service around the pool and in all the evening restaurants. Good dive experience for my husband, though the scenery didn't compare to his trip to Cozumel. Small resort, easy to get around. Good food, kids always could find something they would eat. Kids loved the market on Thursday night to buy their trinket souvenirs. Other cons: We didn't do the "Fidelity club breakfast" but were asked several times. We had to ask management about resort policy on topless sun-bathing (one woman walked in the pool while my children were swimming. A few others on the beach in high traffic areas. Just No. Unacceptable This is a family resort!) We were grateful the staff handled the situation quickly, but we did have to bring it up. A majority of the guests here were from Europe, which we enjoyed many conversations with so many of them. But we were really disappointed that some of these women thought that was OK with children all around. There is a Secrets next-door that is Adult-Only (though we have stayed at TWO adult-only AIs and have never had that experience...so disappointing to finally bring all the children and have that happen). This resort is quite a drive from the airport (almost 1 1/2 hours), which was hard on all of us after Apple left us standing outside at the airport for about an hour waiting on a driver for our transfer that we had arranged WELL in advance.Helpful tips (especially if you are traveling here with children):1. Bring snorkel gear and water shoes (skip the fins). We also packed life vests for the 2 younger ones just for peace of mind.2. Reserve a couple of seats at the beach to stow your snorkel stuff on (before breakfast!) and also reserve a spot by the pool. We didn't feel bad at all reserving spots for four people total when we had 6 in our group. We needed those 2 locations to be able to go back and forth from beach to pool throughout the day.3. Snorkel first thing in morning to see the most ocean life. We walked down to the middle of the Secrets property and then straight out to see turtles, then floated back toward our resort to snorkel over the coral reef areas. While out there, stay floating at the top of the water (try not to stop and tread water...we did a few times to try to communicate where to go next)...treading water stirs up sand and decreases visibility.4. We took the ferry in PDC to Cozumel one day so my husband could dive. We rented a private boat that would guide him in a dive and guide the kids and I on a snorkel at the same time. We used Tortuga Carey in Cozumel and it was a great experience and a great price. Would definitely use them again.Overall, we were really impressed with Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort. Thank you for a wonderful time!
