Our Opinion

A great resort. Newly renovated rooms are very spacious, and the staff will cater to your requests to ensure that you are comfortable. The majority of food served in this resort is Mexican cuisine, and it has an OK variety of alcohol on the shelf. This is a resort suited for those who want to venture away from the resort facilities and enjoy the beach and wildlife that surrounds it.

Overview

Explore the natural wonders of the Mayan Riviera from this ideally situated all-inclusive. Golf at the nearby Puerto Aventuras course or visit the natural aquarium of Xel-Ha and the ancient ruins of Tulum. After your outings, relax under the giant palapa roof of the beachside main restaurant and admire the beautiful ocean view. Families appreciate the spacious accommodations, fun Kids' Club, kilometre-long white sandy beach and calm reef-protected waters.

Location: Beachfront, 20 min to Playa del Carmen, 60 min from the airport.

Healthy and Enjoyable, Relaxing and Invigorating Holiday

Many thanks to Beatrice for the daily Pilates and Zumba classes- what a fabulous instructor. Karla filled in and was fun and friendly also. Added to this the hours of snorkeling and beach walks and I am going home fitter for sure! Re snorkeling, saw 2 lion fish but beware as venomous and did get bit by a chips which are territorial fish, saw so many of God's splendid and colorful creations under the sea!The staff all look so happy to be at work and serving their clientele. The best customer service I have ever experienced- gold medal to you all!A magical place to spend time at a peaceful, serene, beautiful place. Feel so blessed to have come here.

Perfect for destination wedding

My son was married here on November 28. Thirty-three of us travelled from Toronto and every single one of us was impressed with the resort and the phenomenal wedding. Every room faces the beach and the setup of the resort means that you are never more than about a hundred feet from the water. Food was great and varied in both the specialty restaurants (gourmet, Brazilian, Mexican, Asian) and the buffet. Beach was clean with plenty of good quality lounge chairs. The younger group with us loved the beach snack bar which is open 24 hours. A reef offshore protected the beach area in front of the resort and the water was usually calm. Snorkelling with the enormous turtles was fascinating and almost every one of our group saw many turtles during the week. In all areas of the resort the staff were well trained and pleasant.I cannot say enough about the wedding setup. A beautiful gazebo decorated in pink with flowers and drapery was set up near the beach and the set up of chairs was aesthetically perfect. The bride walked along a wooden thatch covered platform to the beach and there was plenty of resort staff to make sure other guests could stand in appropriate locations so they could enjoy the wedding too. The resort provided a photographer who was thorough and creative. There was a separate reception room right beside the beachside wedding area and I am still in awe at the decor. I really can't think of anything that could have been improved. This is not a resort where you will join an inebriated group marching around the pool doing the conga. There is no swim up bar. There is aerobics in the pool, Mexican cooking lessons, stand up paddle boarding lessons and a spectacular yoga building where you look out to the ocean which is about 25 feet in front of your elevated platform. If the water bores you during yoga, you can watch the beautiful orange birds and sunrises.Sunrises are visible from every room. Every room has an outdoor hot tub. Rooms on the top floor have spectacular views of the ocean and the stars (from the outdoor hot tub). Most communal buildings have thatched roofs.Another convenient plus - everything is included, even the minibar and room service, stand up paddle board and lessons, snorkels, masks, lifejackets.

Best resort! A piece of paradise.

Amazing adventure on this trip. Great food. The rooms are gorgeous. We stayed in a junior suite and had a king sized bed and a jacuzzi tub on our balcony. Incredible snorkelling. Variety of fish, reefs, sting rays... You can visit the area with the sea turtles in front of the Secrets Resort which is beside this resort on the left. There are some rules when snorkelling with the turtles that i wish were more clearly explained. You must wear a life vest ( you can borrow from the resort here), no flippers, biodegradable sun screen or just a sun shirt. There are tours that come by to see the turtles between 9am and 4pm. Try to avoid them as some of the guides can be rude to you. I recommend water shoes as there is a lot of crushed coral and rocks in the water. There are sandy patches too.Never had a hard time finding a seat on the beach. No long wait times either for drinks or food. At the beach the servers comevaround frequently to bring drinks. Our server in our area, Marcia, was so lovely and helpful. Its a very classy place. Absolutley stunning. Amazing staff. If you wanted to get on a collectivo and visit Playa Del Carmen, its cheap and easy. 40 pesos one way. You can even visit Tulum ruins and Coba via collectivo. Its so much fun here! Hands down the best all inclusive resort Ive visited.

Mediocre stay for first time visitor

We choose this hotel based on trip advisor reviews: this resort not only is listed number one but has some fabulous reviews: I read the reviews thinking “I can’t wait to get the same experience”. We travel by trip advisor and it is very rare that I do not agree with the previous reviews: this time I must say I didn’t have that wonderful experience that others described. Now with the review.Months prior to arrival as well as two weeks prior to arrival I sent an email that was received and confirmed by Corinna Weisker requesting third building per the reviews and that we were celebrating our anniversary. On arrival, we were immediately meet by the porter as well as greeted with cool towels and drink. We were assigned to building 4 and that was changed to building 3 per my request. Unknown to us, this room was horrible. Room 3212 had a view of the trees: total obstructed view of the ocean. Also the light from the infinity pool reflected into the room. And no fault of the hotel, our neighbor had a screaming child that was constant sound during the first half of our vacation.Room: sparsely furnished and as previously mentioned no furniture to unpack your belongings: you live directly out of your suitcase the entire time. The king bed was hard even though it had a foam topping. The pillows were comfortable. Small flat screen TV. In room safe. Complimentary tote bag. In room refrig: stocked everyday with 1 spirit, 1 orange, 1 coke, 1 diet coke, seltzer water, 2 beer and bottle water. (requested just water and spirit and was never given those drinks more than one each time). 1 potato chip snack bag and 1 miniature milky way candy bar. Bathroom toilet was separate from the shower with frosted doors. Separate sink area with complimentary soap, shampoo, lotion, bath crystals and sponge. Hallway light permeated into both bathroom stalls into the room at night. The best feature of this room is the Jacuzzi on the balcony: very nice and big and relaxing. All rooms are ocean front/ocean view all depends on room, building and location.Food/Drinks: multiple bars. Bar service at the pool and beach was very attentive. Four specialty restaurants and tried 3 out of the four. Brazilian steakhouse was very good the first night and last night not so good: offer table side skewers of pork, chicken, turkey, veggies, pineapple, seafood and beef. The gourmet restaurant requires a more formal dress: food and service excellent. The Japanese restaurant wasn’t good. We did not try the Mexican restaurant.Service: Housekeeping: horrible: we had to ask for towels every day: you arrive back to the room in the evening no towels every day. Pamela was a fabulous ray of sunshine and genuinely kind as well as the omelet lady: wow she was very pleasant. Some staff said hello or hola and others could walk right by you. As we struggled with our luggage from building 3 to the lobby we passed a lot of staff and no one offered assistance until we got to the lobby. One mention: security is excellent: we left the property often and security was really concerned for our well-being. There are security guards posted on both sides of the property. The other person that seem to actively take care and concern was the medical professional tending to the guest: very impressed.Things to do: On the property there isn’t a lot to do besides drink, yoga and relax. Outdoor pool was frigid. The beach is fabulous: outside of building 3 and 4 the beach is rocky. Farther up the beach at the border between building one and Secrets property the beach is calm and excellent snorkeling with the turtles and fish. A 10-15 minute walk up the beach toward Secrets is a small town of Akumal: WONDERFUL. We visited children at the local library: took pictures, sang songs, gave them letters from the Spanish students in the US and gave them a suitcase full of school supplies. One note: we requested a quick 5 minute less than 1mile ride into town with the hotel shuttle and was told “due to safety issues this isn’t allowed”. It would be nice if the hotel encouraged outreach to the local community. If any of these resorts gave just one percent of their daily earnings to the community just see what could be accomplished. We took a taxi to Play De Carmen and had a great time taking pictures of the church and shopping.Fidelity Club: Yes this “resort” will ask you for your time and money to become “part of the club to receive VIP services” for $10,000 US dollars. Raul did a great pressure pitch on a timeshare appearing club benefit. When asked, “do you think your hotel is good as Iberostar?: no response. For $10,000 you will get towels in your room and a penthouse room. If you want me to become a member of the “club” you need to treat me like a member of the “club”: first impressions are lasting impressions. They don’t treat you like you are worthy of the club when you get here: poor room location, no towels for 4 days unless requested each day, no acknowledgement of our wedding anniversary until the day before we were leaving. If you get anything from this review: excellent beach, great snorkeling at a hotel that happens to be an all inclusive. It is not a resort: it is absolutely beautiful: but besides location, this hotel is like the little engine that could but can’t. And why all the good trip advisor reviews for this hotel, because it appears they are members of the club and paid $10,000 to enjoy this resort when the hard working class people aren’t given towels every day, poor room locations and special events ignored.

Great Place to Stay for Vacation

We booked our trip from Apple Vacations and the price was great. That being said I was a little skeptical. When we arrived at the Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness resort I was surprised. The lobby of the hotel was natural looking under a huge palapa with a natural look and open feel. Our room was clean and furnished nicely. We had a balcony with a jacuzzi tub. I would say that the house keeping was a little lax. There were 3 of the 16 days we stayed there that our room was not cleaned nor our bed made. And they seemed to have a shortage of towels. Both at the pool and for our room. The buffet was good. The French and Japanese restaurants as well as the Mexican restaurant were very good. We did not care too much for the Brazilian place the meat was dry and over cooked to my liking. The sushi bar at the beach was limited but good. The staff at Akumal Bay was excellent !!! A few names stand out for me . The Butler Oscar was very helpful. Bartenders Dogoberto, Oscar, And Samuel were the best . Entertaining and kept the beer flowing. Maximiliano the water at the Japanese Fusion restaurant was on the spot polite and helpful. Waitresses Bitia and Patricia were very nice and helpful and always said hello and had great smiles. Patricia even went out of her way to do something special for my girlfriend for her birthday we will never forget that. Thank you Patricia !!! Bitia had her birthday while we were there and gave us a bag of candy Thanks you Bitia !! We will be back and hope to see you again.Mateo and Stacey
