Our Opinion

Azul Beach Resort Riviera Maya is a fabulous hotel with a great attention to detail. This is a smaller hotel and is great for couples looking to relax. Offers beach butler service and lobster dinners! There is a kids club, but some families might prefer a larger hotel with more facilities. On the flip side though, some families may like the more laid back atmosphere of this quaint hotel.

Wedding at The Fives

I brought a group of 22 people for my wedding at the end of October. I'm a Prestige/Exotic member and used my weeks for everyone. We occupied 6 rooms: from a one bedroom Essence suite to a 3 bedroom Essence penthouse, of which 2 were Ruby, 2 Sapphire and 2 non-presidential. Check-in/Check-outGiven that the Prestige check-in room is small as isn't designed for simultaneously servicing more than 2 rooms, it went as well as it could. We arrived around noon, so the rooms weren't ready. We got our bracelets (that's new as of 2017) and went to La Brasserie to get some food and drinks and kill time until the keys were ready for pickup. Room:Our group had all kinds of rooms, but we were all in the Essence section, villa 18. My previous 2 stays were in the "old" section. The rooms are very different here - newer and smaller, and there is no jacuzzi (unless it's a penthouse, in which case there's one on the rooftop). I think I prefer the Essence, mostly because of the building layout and the pools around. Our room was a one bedroom penthouse, which I loved. Daily morning coffee with Bailey's delivery on the rooftop - can't beat that! Also, the rooftop made for fantastic wedding dress pictures. We did have issues with a leaking ceiling and the jacuzzi not working. The ceiling was "fixed" (i.e.patched) twice, but we had plaster falling on me and bridesmaids as we were getting dressed on the wedding day. We were lucky and no dresses got damaged. The jacuzzi was a bummer - wedding night, finally we're alone, someone filled the tub for us, with rose petals and stuff, we get in and... no bubbles. Damn it!!!Other than that, the room was very nice.Beach butlers - great service, very friendly. I was surprised and upset to find out that only members could get Bali beds, even if we use our weeks to bring friends over. That makes no sense, we're using up the prepaid weeks with benefits associated with them, it shouldn't matter whose name is on the reservation. Ruby is ruby, or should be, anyway.  Fortunately, the butlers let us have more than one bed, since it wasn't busy, and we were grateful for that.Restaurants:Better than I remembered. All our breakfasts were at Flavours, although some guests went to La Brasserie and really liked it. The service was usually very good, with one exception. No biggie. They had smoked salmon on day one, and then stopped bringing it. I asked, and got my own personal plate of 4-5 pieces, more than I needed. That repeated every day until day 5, when they said they ran out, were very apologetic and offered to get more from a warehouse, but it would take at least half an hour :) they really, really try to make guests happy. If something isn't there, or isn't right - just ask, they will fix it. For lunch we either went for tacos or ceviche at Oreola grill, or ordered room service and brought it down to the adult pool area, so we could eat while playing games at the large tables there (7-10 people at once)Dinners were great, our butler Enoc made reservation for us, sometimes making the choice himself and informing us after the fact  :) ummm, okay, we weren't planning on doing that, but... thanks! (He's super nice!)We had dinner at the Italian once, Asian - once, Thai - twice, a candlelight dinner on the beach, a semi-private pre-wedding fixed menu dinner at Flavours (which was the worst meal of the entire trip), wedding dinner (extra $$) and room service. I think Thai was my favorite overall, but the chef's special mezzaluna at the Italian was INCREDIBLE. I'm still drooling just thinking about it.We haven't had a chance to try the Mexican, but our friends enjoyed it.Construction:The adult pool wasn't fully operational. There were loungers, towel, and a server (occasionally) taking drink orders, but no bar or BBQ. We were told that the hurricane uncovered major structural problems after the "Grand opening" of the area and the grill/bar had to be closed and eventually fixed. On day 6 they kicked us out, claiming they would be starting construction. That coincided with the end of construction of the main pool, so I suppose it made sense. Room Service - surprisingly good when ordering from the premium menu (Prestige members). There were a few issues at the beginning - my standing 7 am daily coffee order arrived at 7:40 one day, never the day after, then more regularly after Enoc kicked some butt :)Bars: Zky bar was always busy, getting a drink took 20 min.The poolside bar by villa 18 was great, very good service. During the bachelorette party, when we came down to order 7 drinks, they brought them to the room for us, and then 40 minutes later there's a knock on the door - an unprompted refill! That was thoughtful. And no, we aren't crazy tippers - a few $$ here and there, but nothing like $20s at the first visit to the bar.WeddingI don't have too many good things to say about wedding coordinators. The girls are nice and friendly. But I'm happy we didn't rely on them for important stuff. Out semi-private dinner reservation was at the wrong restaurant, the "groom's room drinks and bites" were delivered about 15 minutes before they had to leave - noone had a chance to eat those sandwiches, although a few shots were taken "on the go". The "complimentary" groom's  room wasn't available, luckily we had an opportunity to use the best man's room. We also requested and confirmed several times that the room would be cleaned early, before the guys started getting ready and for photographs. It wasn't. The "fancy" breakfast the came with the wedding package looked nice, but was absolutely inedible, I threw it out as we went to Flavors instead. When your "Benedict" sauce is the consistency of a hard-boiled egg yolk, you're not doing it right. We also never received a refund for 2 people - the change was made after the final payment, but we were assured that we'd get it. My advice - minimize your contact and dependency on the wedding staff. And get the upgrade to the Sky wedding! It seemed like an expensive fee, but I'm so happy I did it! The view is amazing, and no half-naked people in the background. We went to the beach for photos after the ceremony and it was great.Butlers/Concierges:As Prestige members, we had our own butler and never talked to "regular" concierges. Unfortunately there were MANY, MANY problems with our Presidential benefits, as there seemed to be a disconnect between the butler and the different service departments of the resort - room service, maid service, front desk. The butler would make a request, check up on it, and it wasn't done. In some cases he was genuinely surprised and shocked " what do you mean they didn't get aromatherapy? I checked last night, they assured me they did!"Also, a lot of finger-pointing and blaming other people. Our butler Enoc was actually professional and avoided doing that, but you could see him shaking his head and going "I will double check with them" or "I will remind them".All in all, it was a very good trip, but I am concerned that the level of service at Azul Fives is dropping. One of the rooms had an absolutely horrible check-in experience, but it's not my story to tell. The hotel did nothing to apologize for basically locking people out of their room, didn't offer any compensation or even explain why and how that happened - just more of the same finger-pointing.So, to sum it up - great people, (usually) good service, nice rooms (when not leaking), nice pools, lovely green space, wildlife, very eco-friendly resort with great restaurants. But it has some small and not so small issues that can be fixed with proper management. I really hope someone is paying attention. I'd hate to see Thw Fives fall below usual Karisma standards.

Awesome

We have had the best week ever!! The Brasserie is my favourite place for dinner, brilliant service, we went twice - thank you to Freddie and Julio Vazquez and all of the staff for first class service. Also please try the restaurant by the adults only pool, we went there today for lunch and were treated like royalty by our waitress Justina Estrada, beautiful, cheerful girl who couldn’t stop dancing and made the atmosphere wonderful. Thank you also to our lovely maid Rosy Abarca, such thoughtful touches. Also have to thank Benito on the shuttle who happily gave us a tour of the whole facilities, things we would never have seen and letting us watch the monkeys, lovely guy and happy to tell us stories. Last but not least the chap and girl at the pool bar by the Mexican restaurant, wow have they looked after us. We were literally royalty in theirs hands, absolutely wonderful, thoughtful service - nothing was too much trouble (sorry I don’t know the names - he always had a hat on) but the best margaritas in town. Oh also, room service - you guys are wonderful. Thank you all for a brilliant break, see you next year
