Our Opinion

This is an older section of the Barcelo Maya resort complex but renovations in 2013 include refurbished guest rooms, restaurants and bars and a new interactive dolphin experience. Overall, this is a great property with a really nice beach area and lots of facilities and activities.

6 day vacation with friends

We traveled to the Barceló Maya Beach for a 6-day stay with several couples and individuals, all in our thirties, in mid-October. The check-in was easy and the rooms were adequate. I usually don't pay much attention to hotel rooms and do not need a lot of extra amenities because I plan to be away from my room as much as possible during a vacation; however, some of the other folks on the trip said they were not very impressed with the rooms. To me, the room was fine - the bedding was clean, the bathroom was clean, and the maid service tidied the room whenever we put the hanger on the door handle requesting service. Our balcony overlooked a garden area where I saw several iguanas, hummingbirds, and other wildlife, particularly in the morning. The Maya Beach buildings are set pretty far back from the pools and beach, so even the nicer rooms at the end of the buildings do not really have an ocean view. One word of caution about the room buildings and other areas of the resort - the floors can be very slippery! Of course Barceló cannot do much about the slippery floors because it is caused by the humid climate, but keep it in mind. My cheap flip flops did better on the slick floors than my good running shoes...The pools are very nice and clean. The pools are large and never feel overcrowded, except by the swim-up bar. The afternoon activities near the pool can be a little annoying if you are trying to take a nap in your pool chair or if you are having a conversation because the music and entertainment folks are very loud, but the problem can be solved by moving away from the bar area. We never had problems finding enough chairs so our group of 12 could sit together, and there were multiple options for sunny spots and shady spots. Overall, the pools were great. The beach was very pretty and there were plenty of seating options. The water was clear and the waves were fairly calm our first two days, but the wave intensity increased the latter part of our stay and the water was a little murky. We saw large angelfish, thousands of little minnow-like fish, and even a few large rays. They swam right along side us, which normally would have freaked me out, but it was so pretty that I just went with it and really enjoyed the experience. There is a pier that separates the two beach areas where you can see other types of fish. On the south side of the pier, there is a rocky area of beach which reveals tiny tide pools during low tide and you can see little crabs, small fish, and other creatures up close if you time it right.Really my only complaint - and my co-travelers agree - is about the food. While the buffets offer a ton of options, many of the options are not very good. I realize the resort has to accommodate many different tastes, but it seems like the quantity of options became the goal versus the quality of the options. Was everything bad? No, of course not. We all found things that we liked and by day three or four, we knew what to eat and what to avoid. We went to two of the a la cart restaurants during our stay - Tokyo and La Fuente. Tokyo is a Japanese steakhouse and La Fuente is supposed to be a Spanish tapas type restaurant. Everyone agreed that the food at Tokyo was the best we had during the entire trip. In contrast, everyone agreed that the food at La Fuente was the worst - it was pretty disappointing. In fairness, the wait staff at La Fuente was very nice, so it was just a problem with the food. To summarize the food matter, no one in our party starved - we all found plenty to eat during our stay. However, the resort may want to scale back a bit on the number of options and focus more on the quality. As for the drinks, I am a beer drinker and there were two types of beer available in most of the buffets, restaurants, and bars, thus I was content. Several of my co-travelers like mixed drinks and noted that some of the drinks were mostly sugary mixers and small amounts of not-so-good liquor. One couple upgraded to the premium level so top shelf liquors were available to them and they were glad they did so. The consensus is that if you plan on drinking a lot of mixed drinks and prefer better liquors, it may be worth paying the extra money for the premium services. On the other hand, if you are a beer drinker or don't mind lesser-quality alcohol, there's no need to pay the extra fee.The resort staff members were all very friendly and helpful. I did not have a single bad experience. We had an issue with our toilet on the second day and we stopped by the guest services office while we were out walking around and asked them to address the problem. We got back to the room approximately ten minutes later and the service person was at our door in less than five minutes and the problem was fixed immediately. I was impressed with how quickly they reacted to our request. Just a few random tips - the trip from the airport to the resort takes at least an hour, so make sure you have a drink and/or snack and that you use the restroom before leaving the airport. Also, this resort is huge - be prepared to walk. One annoyance was that the Wi-Fi was not included in the "all-inclusive" price. If you want Wi-Fi during your stay, you have to pay $10 per day for two devices; however, the resort did tell us that free Wi-Fi is available somewhere on the campus between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm daily (I think the location was the mall area, but I may be mistaken). Lastly, bring bug spray. I tend to get eaten alive by mosquitos everywhere I go, and Mexico is no exception. The bugs don't bite much during the day, but they show up at dusk. This was my second stay at this resort, although I was in the Maya Caribe during my last visit which was approximately seven years ago. Overall my spouse and I enjoyed our stay, as did most of the others in our group. Highlights: the beach, pools, and the garden areas. Areas for improvement: food and additional fees that should be part of the all-inclusive price.

amazing hotel for destination wedding

We stayed at the premium level at the Barcelo Maya Beach. We planned our wedding with them, everything came up as planned (even better) I loved every minute at the hotel. Yasmin Gomez our wedding coordinator was super caring and does an amazing job. Our wedding was beyond perfect! We stayed at the property for 1 week and we had over 25 rooms.. we all had a great time. The pools are amazing, the beach is beautiful, the spa is to die for.. we are totally coming back!!! I want to thank Dulce Rodriguez in the premium level for all her help with our reservations and to help us have an unforgettable time! I totally recommend the hotel. The only thing that is annoying are the reservations for the specialty restaurants... when you try to book they are always full.. and when you are able to land a reservation.. the restaurants are half empty.. like I said we there was about 50 ppl in our party.. we all went at different days/times to the restaurants and we all notice the same thing.

Update: add 1 star

While the service at this resort wasn't superb, it was perfect for our little family. The beach had seaweed every day, the water was murky and not that great, but the pools and he splash pads were awesome. The lifeguards are a little too eager to blow whistles at parents assisting their small children, but I understand it's better to be safe than sorry. There's a bowling alley, a very small carousel and a little market on-site.The buffets were good - enough variety of food for the kids to have healthy food choices and the staff was amazing at accommodating food allergies. We would have loved to eaten at the a la carters restaurants more, but everything was booked before we even got there. We will go again to this hotel, but this time we will get a room closer to the pools because the building we were in was the very last possible building and it was easily a 15-20 min walk to get anywhere, which is exhausting with little kids.

Amazing place, kids friendly and very helpful staff. Will be back again!

This was our 1st family vacation with our 1 y.o. son so we very a little on edge when we arrived after our 5.5 hours flight. The staff was very kind and helpful. We originally requested king size bed with a baby crib but then when we changed our mind to 2 queen beds and then again to king size bed. They accommodated our requests without any complication. At the same time, we were greeted by concierge Denis who provided us with all restaurant reservations so we don't have to worry about it at all. Denis made our stay wonderful and unforgettable. This was our anniversary vacation so one day Denis arranged our bed with rose pedals and champagne. That was a great touch. The food was really, each night they had a different food cuisine which was very nice. There are many things for the kids to do, kids club house, swings, kid friendly pools, dolphinarium and more. The property is huge, it consists of 5 hotels and you can use pretty much all hotels amenities except for food at the Palace. The beach is wide and has volleyball court. The water is shallow so you can walk 50 yards or so into the sea. The bottom line we loved it. Once again special thanks to all hotel staff and especially concierge Denis for making our stay unforgettable. Can't wait to come back to this place again
