Our Opinion

This is an older section of the Barcelo Maya resort complex but renovations in 2013 include refurbished guest rooms, restaurants and bars and a new interactive dolphin experience. Overall, this is a great property with a really nice beach area and lots of facilities and activities.

Overview

Looking for quiet seclusion amid tropical gardens? Then this Barcelo hotel - set on a two-kilometre white sand beach surrounded by a completely virgin natural park - is just the place. The landscaping is spectacular and there's a wide variety of dining and entertainment options. Located within the expansive complex of the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort, you can enjoy all the facilities of the 4 hotels within the complex.  An ideal place for families and couples, the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing beach vacation or a fun-filled holiday.

Location: Directly on the beach, 20 min from Playa del Carmen, 5 min from Puerto Aventuras, 60 min from the Cancun airport.

Beautiful Location

We have been to so many inclusives and you wish you could take the best from each and make a resort! We liked this place. Here are our pros and cons:Check-in: Quick and easy on a Tuesday morning at 10:30 AM. Three people working the desk and offered us drinks. Had to wait for rooms to be ready but we were prepared and had our suits and sunscreen packed on top! They have a changing room in the lobby; you just need to look for the correct door.Pools: They are very very large. They look beautiful. Very clean. Never saw them cleaning them either. It would be nice to have another area in the pool to sit; a shallow section for sunning, etc. The Palace has lounges. The adult pool between the Tulum and Coba building has lounges and a bar but not near the beach. It is great to escape a windy day though. The con is that the pool has no activities. You need to go to the hotel next door. All the pools seemed similar except the Palace. Not sure if you are allowed in the pool. We went in to cool off but learned you cannot get a bottle of water from the swim up bar if you are not staying there. I knew we could not eat there but didn't think that would apply to a simple drink. It is a long walk there.Grounds: They were immaculate and even the view between buildings/the gardens, were beautiful to sit and look at. Yes, it is a large resort. You can make it as big as you want. You can just leave the room and stay in your area of pool and food, which most people did. What is nice is that you can leave your area and explore further down the beach and still grab a bite to eat at one of the other four. The beach in front of the Beach and Caribe is the smoothest sand. As you get closer to the Palace you need to wear your flipflops as it gets more coral and rocks in the sand. There were areas to enter down by the Palace that were okay but the best area is Beach. Tried snorkeling on our 9 days there. We are avid snorkelers. Didn't find it impressive, sorry. Some nice things to see with sea fans, some coral formations and very few fish. We swam far out and all around Palace area. Sadly didn't see rays or turtles. Activities: Unfortunately the water was rougher than we thought it would be. They did let kayaks out a couple times but you could see the people struggling with the waves. Could not use water bikes or paddleboards either. Tropical Storm Cindy (the beginnings of) passed by us. The waves stirred up the water/sand. I saw pictures of clam water on tripdadvisor but not during our 9 days. This was the first resort that we have been to that did not take people out on Hobie Cats. They said you need to do it yourself. I guess that is a con to the size of this resort. They could not possibly keep up with the demand of 5 resorts in one to do this. We were disappointed in the activities. We are used to more and thought with a resort this size it would offer more. It took us a couple days to find the activity board; it is in the towel hut. They do mostly one think per hour. We are used to picking from several things in an hour. No preteen/teen activities. My kids are used to pool relay races, lazar tag, capture the flag on the beach, movies at the pool, tournaments, archery, tennis lessons, sushi making, etc. That was a huge disappointment. Jonathan and his activity team would walk up and down the beach and say "aerobics in ten minutes or beach olympics coming up" but that is about it. There are enough people to fit activities at every resort instead of combining them. There is a Club for teens in the mall. But that doesn't open til 9:30!Shows: We enjoyed a few but they seemed to be similar after a while. Latino dancing night, Mexican dancing night, Las Vegas dancing night. We wanted to see Fantasmic but I guess it is not on regularly. We were too tired to stay up to see it on a Tuesday but figured we could catch it next Tuesday. Never came around again. The Circus night and Michael Jackson show were good to watch.Mall: What resort has it's own mall! You can walk from your room totally under covering all the way to the mall! You truly do not need to leave the resort to shop. They have a mall feeling and then an outdoor market type area. I would pick the Beach or Caribe to stay in when it comes to central location to restaurants, pier, dolphinarium and best beach. There is a bus to take you from place to place out front. The mall is close so walk to it. The Palace is a distance but found waiting 20 minutes for the bus a waste of time. We did it once to do it.Dolphins: if you want to get the best price, book at least 5 days in advance on the internet! $80 for Dolphin trainer for the day is a steal! Nice to walk by and see the dolphins too! Pay activities: We did find this a true turn off. Never had to pay for things on the grounds of the hotel before (except spa). Bowling and water park and mini golf. We did none of them. The waterpark was not that big to deserve a fee. Bowling was way overpriced. The minigolf looked nice and is free earlier in the day. Mosquitoes: Noticed it depends on weather. A hot day and sun, we saw none. An evening rain usually meant your ankles would get bit on walk to dinner, during show or under your table at outdoor restaurant.Food: Tokoyo - very good; Lobster and Beef Tenderloin amazingly good. La Tratorria - the bacon, mozzarella chicken and pizzas were very good. The size of alfredo pasta not good. The seafood place Marenostrum was amazing! The Mexican restaurant Lindo in the Beach was our least favorite and slowest service. I guess our view of mexican food as an American is not the same. The fahitas were fatty and little pieces of chicken. I guess i am used to sauces and cheese. We had to ask for both. Asked for flaming coffee and said that it was broken?? Santa Fe - great tenderloin. Avoid ribeyes and strips as they are very tough. Did not care for buffets. Too much quantity and not qualify. Beefs always tough. Grilled chicken seemed a different texture and fatty. The roasted chicken was good. Ribs dried out. Seemed to have an area catering to Mexican type foods every day and another area that focused on pasta and seafood. Missed American type food on the buffet. Burgers were iffy the same as hotdogs. Fries were usually not fresh. The dining room buffet was better in our opinion than the grill. I ate a lot of salad with a side of roasted chicken. Desserts were not bad. Spongy type desserts must be a mexican thing. No good pies. Some good chocolate and vanilla type desserts. Liked the fried cream puff things for breakfast the best! French toast and pancakes not good. They seemed a secondary or third type choice here so they were often not fresh. They do have a great smoothie making place at breakfast and squeeze their own juices! Yum! Off grounds: Walked across the street to Azul Cenote. 100 peso per person. Well worth it. Jump off small cliff into beautiful fresh water, snorkel the formations and fish or sit there and let the fish nibble your feet. There are two other cenotes but Chicken Ha was expensive for what we wanted and Christobel not what we wanted either. We were going to Xplor and see caves and didn't want to pay to see them at Chicken Ha. You need to have no sunscreen on or mineral based there. Didn't see any mosquitoes but it was a hot sunny day. Xplor totally amazing - see review on trip advisor. Cost $18 in taxi each way. Tulum - we walked out front, crossed road and caught a Collectivo to tutum. 40 pesos a person each way or we payed $15 for 5 of us. Tulum entrance was about $5. A cheap excursion on your own!! Be aware that if you have a large party you may have to ride on two different buses, they are just big vans. We had to split 5 and 3. We all arrived within minutes of each other. Going back, there are many to pick from. Just look for Collectivo written on front. Go early!!! It is hot there!!!Room: they have bathrobes, slippers, shampoo, conditioner and bath gel dispenser, small toothpaste tube, one toothbrush, shoe shine kit, sewing kit, vanity kit (cotton swabs, cotton ball and nail file), nice soaps. Snacks (chips, peanuts) and pop, juice and water (love you can get bottles of water at this resort). Always gave us new towels even when we hung them up. Only received 4 washclothes whole 9 day visit. Water pressure good; rain shower head and detached one too. No ventilation so steams up fast! Beds seemed comfy but we were so tired each night we would not really know. Loved they had the couch turned into a bed for us. We have two teens. They were going to share a bed. This was so much better! We used USA transfer to get to hotel. Best rates and so reliable. $135 for 4 roundtrip. It is over an hour travel time.Would we go back to Barcelo? Maybe. It has so many pluses!! Do I recommend it? Yes!! We really like to try new places. Mexico is nice but not a fav. Jamaica is our fav, The staff here were amazingly nice! You smile and say Hola and they smile back and may talk to you more.

Barcelo at Cancun

Very nice, Very big, I'm going back. Sand is just crushed coral and is course. Water is clear but we stayed in the pool bar area mostly. Great service at the pool bar also. Very clean resort that actually looks great all over.

Exceeded my expectations!

This is a great resort. I will break down the different parts of the resort that we used on our stay. We were a group of 6 staying in 3 rooms.CHECK IN: This was a concern after reading so many complaints about long waits and unfriendly staff. Our experience however was quiet the opposite. Our check in was fast and staff was friendly. ( I imagine waits can be long when there are many people checking in at one time. There were 3 people working the front desk when we arrived)ROOM: We stayed in the Tulum building close to the pool on the first floor. Location was fine for us, but it is a big resort and this building is the farthest to the south side. The room was clean and ac worked well. It was not one of the renovated rooms however I felt it was completely acceptable. The bed was firm and pillows soft we slept well all week. Our housekeeper and mini fridge stocker did a good job of keeping our room supplied with all of our needs. We left a note for the fridge of what we wanted and it was met.GROUNDS: The resort is beautiful and very well maintained. Every morning workers were working hard on landscaping and cleaning to make sure the resort remains so nice. The Mayan Mall and shops on the resort were a nice way to spend some time before or after dinner.POOLS: Pools are large and very clean. We never had a problem getting a chair in the shade. We spent most of our time in the Beach Pool which seems to be a little calmer than the others. We also spent a little time in the adult pool which was also nice. The swim up bar was a nice touch but I tended to get out to get a drink from the other side of the bar. (it was faster because kids weren't sitting there making the bartenders make a million frozen drinks and then not tipping them).BEACH: The beach here is great. In front of the beach section the sand is soft and white with few rocks. You can walk out into the ocean a 100 yards and be chest deep and be able to see the bottom. As you walk the beach north towards the palace section the beach becomes a little more rocky but is still perfect for swimming and snorkeling. I snorkeled a few days and saw many fish, turtles and rays. The best area I found was in front of the palace section. The is coral on the far north side with good fish as you move south it becomes a sandy bottom with sea grass (where I saw rays and turtles) and the transitions back to coral. We also like the area to the far south (past the beach section) there is an area the is basically empty with the exception of the resorts turtle eggs protection area. You can spend time in that area and feel like you are on a private beach. If you continue south you come to a sign that says "enter at own risk"(or something like that). We continued along the shore past the sign (it is a little sketchy in areas) after a short walk we came to an old run down resort (looks as if it were destroyed by a hurricane and never rebuilt) The ocean there is very rough but amazing in color. (made for some great pictures).GYM: This resort has the best gym of any I have been to by far. It has so much equipment that you can always find something to use even when it was busy. I believe there were 14 treadmills, 4 ellipticals, 3-4 stepper type machines, a spinning room, about 6 recumbent bikes and numerous weight machines and free weights.FOOD and DRINK: The food was good. I always found something I liked. The only complaint here is the food temperature, many times food was just luke warm at best. (I assume it is due to holding that quantity of food at temperature for extended times). The al a cartes were good as well. We did the Mexican, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. The Japanese was by far they best meal we had all week. With a 7 night stay we received 4 al a cart reservations. The drinks were good as well. We never had to wait more the a few minutes even at busy times. It was nice that they had beer taps and tequila that was self-serve and multiple locations. Made it easier and faster if you needed them instead of a mixed drink.SERVICE: This was another area a was concerned about because of previous reviews. We however had exceptional service from everyone we encountered. Every worker we had interaction with was friendly and helpful.Overall I believe this resort is a great value. The price for a week was very reasonable and they met or exceeded my expectations in all areas. I would love to stay here again!!

Perfect place for family fun!

We booked this resort last minute but went with TripAdvisor reviews. We don't regret it! It is the perfect place to spend a tropical and relaxing time with the entire family. There are activities for all ages. I love that you can access so many different pools and there are restaurants and bars available all over the resort. I want to go back ASAP!
